Ninja News, Gifts, Animated Movies Trivia, and Three Years Ago Today...

Ninja News

Thanks again to all the participants of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! Every month you guys share the most amazing things and work so hard to encourage one another. It’s just amazing. Special thanks to my co-hosts this month, LG Keltner and CM Brown. You did a fantastic job, ladies. I’ll be contacting potential co-hosts for December this weekend.

Karen at A Peek at Karen’s World is hosting her annual blog awards again! Nominate your favorites now.

Michael Offutt’s sequel to Slipstream, released last May, is out now – Oculus! Check his site for ordering options. Congratulations, Michael! You’re a writing machine. You’ll have three books out before I even finish editing my third…

David Powers King won the I’m Thankful for my Readers Blogfest, hosted by Tara and VikLit with his poem, Who Ate My Pie Crust? Well deserved win, because it was hilarious. I was even mentioned:

I asked her - no luck, so I expanded my riot,
by asking Alex Cavanaugh, a starship pilot.
"I hope you catch a red-handed culprit soon,
but I have 100 comments to write before noon!"

(And yes, I did write a hundred comments before noon that day!)

Don’t forget the I Miss You Blogfest is next Friday! Perfect time to show your appreciation for special blogger buddies.

Gifts

I received several cool gifts this week. My publisher said soon I’ll get more mail than they do!

I won a zombie package from Susanne at Putting Words Down on Paper which included these cool items:

And I was completely surprised to receive two bags of Hot Tamales from Angela Brown and Gwen Gardner! Thank you so much, ladies! You are both super special.

I need to ask for Hot Tamales more often!

Three Years Ago Today…

I started this blog.

I’d signed the contract for CassaStar and my publisher told me to get my butt online.

I had no followers. My blog was plain. And my first post was a lame “Hi, I’m Alex…”

And now, three years later… whoa!

Almost 1700 followers, over 500 posts, and my blog definitely isn’t plain anymore. (Can’t confirm the non-lame posts though.)

This journey has been nothing short of incredible. I’ve made so many awesome friends and you’ve been supportive beyond my wildest hopes.

Thank you everyone for your support, your comments, and your friendship. It means the world to me. Today, I am not just a man of few words. There just aren't words to describe my appreciation.

Think we should celebrate with some Hot Tamales, don’t you?

Movie Trivia Time!

Animated films this time!

1 – What film won the first ever Best Animated Film Oscar in 2001?

2– Who voiced Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

3 – What was Disney’s first animated feature movie?

4 – What animated film featured rats and singing slugs?

5 – Who voiced Gru in Despicable Me?

6 – What was Disney’s 50th animated feature movie?

7 – Who voiced the title character in Rango?

Did you enjoy the IWSG posts this week? See some cool new books and news today? Envious of my gifts and the Hot Tamales? (I’ll share!) Know any of the animated film trivia? Going to see Skyfall or Lincoln this weekend? And where were you three years ago today…?

Congrats on three years of blogging. It goes by so fast. I hit 3 years in 2012 too, with a much more modest result.

Okay now you got me thinking, hell I don't know where I was yesterday, much less three years ago. But I'm squeezing my brain cells for an answer. November 2009, I was unpublished learning writing my first books and trying my best to figure out what the hell I was doing. I attended my first Romance Writer's Chapter meeting and the rest is history! Or should I say Her-story! Congrats on three years Alex, you have accomplished a lot!

Johnny Depp on #7 and way more importantly, congrats on the three-year anniversary, Captain!

Rachna, we need a party.

Nancy, it was the first short, but not first full length film.

Hildie, we've both come so far.

Suze, correct and thanks!

Good to know, Hart, and you got the first two right.

Congratulations, Alex, on 3 wonderful years! 3 years ago, I didn't even know I wanted to be a writer. I'm glad I figured that out & met you and so many other writers. Okay, for the trivia, I only know Kathleen Turner & Johnny Depp. And 100 comments?!! Before noon?!!! How is even possible?

I'm struggling today, so I'm going to jump in with the movie trivia:

1. Shrek
2. Kathleen "I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way" Turner
3. Snow White
4. Flushed Away
5. Steve Carell
6. Tangled (love that moved)
7. Johnny Depp

I think I've seen too many animated films.

Lisa said...

Congratulations Alex. Lame definitely does not fit anywhere here. The most amazing thing about your blog is the number of comments. It shows the combraderie you have built. The trivias - I have no idea.

Unknown said...

Congrats on the gifts and on three years! Ummm I don't remember the numbers but I think maybe the first animated was snow white, Gru wad Steve Carell and Rango was Johnny Depp. Fub quiz, thanks Alex! =)

Morgan said...

Gosh, I love all the IWSG posts... it's SO great to *really* relate to people... it definitely takes down a barrier and really lets us see people... it's so nice.

And bleh to the Hot Tamales! LOL. I'm soooo not a fan! So more for everyone else!

And three years ago today I only had 10,000 words written with my first novel... I was still young and naive to everything in this writing world! ;-)

Congrats, Alex. You know, if you were to hold a writer's conference, I think you'd get just as many people attending as SCBWI! ;-)

Suzanne Furness said...

Congratulations on the 3 years of blogging! It's hard to imagine your blog was ever plain and ordinary Alex.

Charles, sadly the entrails were missing...

Joshua, you nailed it today!

Lisa, thank you.

Emilyann, you got those right.

Morgan, I'd hope someone would show up! And I'll eat your allotment of Hot Tamales for you.

Melissa, that's a bargain! I think we found each other a little over two years ago.

Mark, I am a better guitar player. Pressure of playing in front of others will do that to you. And the clones will have to take over when I go see Skyfall this afternoon.

LG, the machine keeps going.

Thanks everyone!

Christine Rains said...

Congratulations on three great years! My husband is going to see Skyfall. I think I'm just in need of several naps this weekend! Three years ago today, I was pregnant and doing NaNoWriMo, hoping to get at least a couple novels written before the baby arrives.

Congrats on three awesome years and lots of well-deserved success, Alex!!! You Rock! Wishing you boxes of Hot Tamales!

The trivia . ..my brain must be dead this afternoon because I really can't remember any of the answers, but I know I should know them . ..I really should know them . ..I worked for Disney once, and Disney trivia is usually part of a Disney interview. Umm, their first - either Snow White, or that short feature with Steamboat Willie. The 50th . . . Beauty and the Beast? Little Mermaid? I should know this! aagh!

Congratulations on your three years of blogging!

I don't know what I would do without you, Alex. If I had never met you online, I think my blog would be different. You're the ONE who inspired me to promote fellow writers and I enjoy every minute of it.

It's just I don't know how you do it all even though you may have clones helping you out. You amaze me. I think about you randomly during the day and I have a smile on my face EVERY TIME.

You're amazing. You just keep inspiring, encouraging, supporting your fellow writers like no other person I never know. YOU STICK WITH US IN THE LONG RUN - IN THE BEGINNING TO THE VERY END. I'm in the very beginning of my writing journey and you've already helped tremendously with your undeniable, one and only SUPPORT system.

I know I've said this several of times but Alex, you're a rare friend to have. A friend that looks over you ALL THE TIME to lend a hand anytime, it's unbeatable.

Let's get down to it, you're someone special in my heart and I will always remember you. I really mean what I'm saying because I admire you 100%.

*hugs Alex*

I'm looking forward to the Miss You blogfest! It's gonna be so fun! :)

Michael Offutt, Phantom Reader said...

Alex, thanks for featuring me. But I'm not a writing machine. Let me explain what happened. I had Oculus finished about the same month as Slipstream was published. I finished Slipstream two years before it got published by DDP in May of this month. To keep me busy while I blogged and while I looked for a publisher and queried, I wrote Oculus. That took me two years to finish which happened this summer after editing. So it just seems like I write uber fast. But I don't.

I'm only 2400 words into the third book and it will take me probably a year to write it. So it won't be until 2014 until I get the third book out.

So yeah...not fast. It just seems like it because I had a backlog of story available.

Mary, thank you.

Helena, we need a Hot Tamales party!

Livia, I am speechless... Thank you. Friends like you keep ME going.

Michael, and I don't even start writing the next story until the last one is out. I knew you'd written most of it already - just giving you grief.

SC, thanks! I try my best when it comes to the IWSG.

Congratulations on your blog anniversary Alex, enjoy. Three years ago I wrote a one line spoof titled Star Trek 'the search for women.' Yes its totally dumb but then my intention was only to post it for some good laughs.

Happy Blogversary, Alex! I'm right behind you -- my 3 years will be up next Sunday. But NO comparison; you are way off the charts, my friend. Congratulations!

Let's see if I can guess some of your trivia...

1. Spirited Away
2. Was it Kathleen Turner?
3. Dumbo, maybe.
4. Wild Guess: Secret of Nimh, no! Ratatouille! Honestly, don't know.
5. Steve Carrel
6. I don't even have a clue but I'll stab at The Princess and the Frog (one of my personal faves).
7. Johnny Depp

Hot Tamales! Num!! Alex, I can't believe you have only been blogging 3 years. Look at the awesome army and community you have built in such a short time. I have found so many others through you. It is wonderful! 3 years ago...my blog wasn't even a twinkle in my eye. It is awesome where life takes us! I can't wait to see Lincoln. Hope you are having a great weekend!

The zombie package sounds awesome . You have come a long way, Alex and are quite an inspiration for all of us. I just dropped by to say hi. I am doing NaNo and am a bit out of the loop.

The reason you have achieved so much is you are so dedicated to writing and to helping other writers. I don't know how you do 100 comments in a day. That is a lot. Congrats on 3 years. I hit my 3 years a few months ago but I haven't achieved a tenth of what you have.

Yay for hot tamales!

1. Beauty and the Beast?
2. Kathleen Turner (I want her voice when I grow up)
3. Steamboat Willie?
4. Flushed Away?
5. Steve Carrell?
6. No idea - Princess and the Frog?
7. Johnny Depp!!

This was my first IWSG, and I enjoyed it. I hope to be able to visit more people next month, but I did visit 20.
