Alex’s Question for Chrys: Do the movies accurately capture tsunamis?

I’m not as big of a movie buff as Ninja Captain Alex, but I love disaster movies! Movies like Deep Impact and The Day After Tomorrow mostly used tsunamis for visual effects. They wanted the audience to be amazed by the grand size, but they don’t really get on ground level, in the perspective of people, specifically people caught in the water.

In The Hereafter, there is a tsunami that sweeps away a woman. We get to see what happens to her, and it is shocking, but I personally felt that the water was way too fast. Yes, a tsunami is fast and fierce, but the speed of the one in this movie didn’t seem right to me. And the water is clear, whereas it would’ve turned dirty from everything it picked up on the ground.

The movie that is super realistic is The Impossible, which is based after the Thailand Tsunami of 2004. You have to see this if you haven’t. I took notes when I watched it the first time. Actual notes. It helped me to figure out what it’s like to be caught in a Tsunami, and what would most likely happen following one. We see Naomi Watts beaten by the water. We see a second wave. And we see the destruction. It is done so well. You will watch the tsunami scenes in absolute terror. I did.

Movie Review - Midnight Special

A man rescues his son, who has unique abilities, from a cult. Believing the boy is a savior, the cult will do anything to get him back. Believing the boy is a weapon and a threat, the FBI is also in pursuit.
The film is slow paced but not dull. It was super intriguing from start to finish.
It’s not an original story, but it’s wonderfully told. The director pulls everything together really well and on a really low budget. It’s engaging, thought-provoking, and truly a well-told science fiction tale.
And the science fiction is a very small part of the story. It’s part drama, part chase, and part science fiction.
Starring Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, and Adam Driver, who all turn in great performances. (And where else are you going to see Superman’s General Zod and Star Wars’ Kylo Ren in the same film?)
On NetFlix – highly recommended.

Ninja News

Here is an update on Michael Offutt. He took a break over the holidays because he purchased his first house! However, he had no Internet, and there is a bit of a battle to get Internet to his new neighborhood. Until then, his only source of Internet is his phone. He’ll return to the blogging world when he has Internet in his new house.

The Crow

An incredibly haunting film. Brandon Lee’s death infused the movie with presence that you feel when watching it. The cinematography and set design are spectacular and the performances spot-on. The creator of the original graphic novel series wrote it in response to his own real-life tragedy, which adds even more depth to the film. An underappreciated masterpiece. (And a kick-ass soundtrack.)

Eric Draven is the tragedy. Haunted by his own death and that of his fiancé, Eric has returned to exact justice on those responsible. Armed with his guitar, his wits, and a sense of humor, he sets off on his quest. There is an air of sorrow beneath his strength, and he just wants to right the wrongs and find his peace.

Trivia and Facts:

Brandon Lee was accidentally shot on the set on March 31, 1993, and pronounced dead at a Wilmington, NC hospital six hours later. This was just seventeen days before he and fiancé Eliza Hutton, who also worked on the film, were to be married. She petitioned that the film be completed, and it was released a year later, dedicated to the couple.

Co-star Ernie Hudson played a cop in The Crow, and a cop in two other films release that year – name them.

B’s trivia answer – Satriani played lead guitar for Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones.

A lot to cover today! (Promise my posts will be much shorter during the A to Z Challenge.) First we kick off with friend and fellow science fiction author, Michael Offutt, who is here to entertain, amuse, and tell you why you need to buy Oculus, his latest book.

My earliest memory of board games started with Monopoly. I think that’s why my protagonist likes games too (don’t tell fans of hockey that it’s just a game). A little bit of us always shows up in our characters, right? Don’t answer that, but please indulge a few paragraphs of my insanity.

“My number on the squad is 11,” Jordan might say. “It’s my favorite, but this isn’t Craps. And three doubles in a row is bad, at least by the rules I play. If I say I’m a player, and I’m lucky is that a double entendre? I’m the lucky one, and this is not the third roll.

“I landed on Alex Cavanaugh’s blog with the dog. I always play the dog. It doesn’t shed and is all shiny out of the box. And Alex’s blog is Free Parking. You can’t argue with that. Ninjas never charge for parking. Not when they can slash your tires with a sword and can make you pass go without collecting $200. Do you have any idea how much that is in Ramen noodles?

“But it isn’t the happiest day of my life. That’s when I won $10 at a beauty contest. For a guy that’s pretty special. For a fake character in a real book, that’s redder than Emma Stone’s lips on Oscar night. And it’s doing pretty good. Shortly after that though, Kolin went directly to jail. Sometimes them’s the breaks. I feel bad for him…well partially bad. At least there’s no soap to drop and the menacing scowl behind the bars is just drawn on. You don’t want to drop the soap in a fake paper jail. The fake paper inmates have a tendency to shove you into one of the Fifty Shades of Grey books. For a fictional guy, that’s almost as bad as sitting through The Notebook.

“Still, there’s part of me that sheds the water works. I never liked that utility anyway. Water works are best done by chicks, right? But if you disagree, that’s fine. I won’t charge you if you give me your get out of jail free card. We all know you put out to get out, but your secret’s safe with me. I’m a black hole of secrets. Just remember, I see through you.

“Oh! You landed on Chance. I wonder what you’ll get. I guess that page is still unwritten. I hope you win $10 at a beauty contest. Then you could buy my story and feel validated at the same time. But don’t take it from me. Take it from Steve Jobs. ‘Oculus’ means ‘eye.’

“And anything that starts with “I” (iPad, iPod, iPhone) just has to be cool, or I’m not a character worth his ink. That’s my story, and I’m stickin’ to it.”

At least…I think that’s what Jordan might say.

Three Years Ago Today…

I started this blog.

I’d signed the contract for CassaStar and my publisher told me to get my butt online.

I had no followers. My blog was plain. And my first post was a lame “Hi, I’m Alex…”

And now, three years later… whoa!

Almost 1700 followers, over 500 posts, and my blog definitely isn’t plain anymore. (Can’t confirm the non-lame posts though.)

This journey has been nothing short of incredible. I’ve made so many awesome friends and you’ve been supportive beyond my wildest hopes.

Thank you everyone for your support, your comments, and your friendship. It means the world to me. Today, I am not just a man of few words. There just aren't words to describe my appreciation.

Think we should celebrate with some Hot Tamales, don’t you?

Giving up Blogging

Recently I saw a post about bloggers quitting due to negative response. They were book bloggers, dealing with angry authors, trolls, and a general dissatisfaction with what they were doing.

The question – have you ever thought about quitting?

While this Ninja has thought about the day I won’t be able to maintain the same pace I do now, I’ve never thought about quitting. And not just because I’m an author with at least one more book in me.

I refuse to quit on my blogger buddies.

Why you keep coming here, I don’t know. But you do! And to quote the original Spiderman – “With much power comes much responsibility.”

Why do I continue to blog? Because of YOU.

Some of you go through things that just amaze me. You persevere. You don’t give up. And eventually, you succeed.

I want to be here when you succeed. To share your triumphs with the world. And since the Ninja Army is so huge now, I know I can share it with a lot of people.

This blog long ago ceased being about me. It’s about YOU. Someone this week commented that I was Superman and that I needed to reveal Clark Kent. But neither really matters. What matters to me is YOU.

I never set out to be an author. I never thought I’d have an online presence, let alone that it would grow to its current state. I am humbled by the amount of people who leave comments here every week. You keep me going. You make me want to do better. You are a great blessing in my lfe.

So this is to let you know, this Ninja is NOT quitting!

Michael Offutt on Slipstream, Dyslexia, and Goatzilla

I have a really cool guest for you today!

My guest today is author Michael Offutt. His first book, Slipstream, just came out last month – and those of us who are authors remember how exciting it is with that very first book! Michael would like to share with you some of his writing rules and a giveaway he is hosting. Take it away, Michael!

Here are the seven rules I use when writing science-fiction:

1) Select a title that has already been done twenty times so that when people Google it, they will find old movies starring Mark Hamill and Anthony Hopkins. In this way you at least get the secondary traffic from people who have low standards.

2) Embrace your dyslexia. This is how you get some really cool alien names.

3) Use post-modernism in your story. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know what that term means. No one else does either. But use it in your pitch and you’ll come across as smart.

4) Use a teenage male or female lead, an evil scientist, and a monster.

5) Recycle ideas that people find familiar. Instead of Godzilla, create Goatzilla—a 200-foot tall goat with radioactive breath who buries Puerto Vallarta under its own droppings. People will think you’re a genius.

6) Solicit good advice from people you know personally, but who really could care less about what you do. After querying 40 times and receiving 40 rejections from agents, it’s helpful to get told, “I think the key to publishing is getting an agent. Have you tried that?”

7) Solicit beta readers from a pool of people who would rather read OK Cupid and Facebook than read a book. These are perfect because they are looking for romance and boy are they ever gonna be surprised by your book. You can write love better than anyone.

And that my friends, is advice you can take to heart. But aside from my snark, you are wonderful. Never forget that. Never stop dreaming.

I’m taking a few liberties and changing friendly to friendship. This hilarious show centers on the friendship of Shawn and Gus as they run their Psychic Detective agency. It’s one of the few shows I enjoy watching over and over. Check it out if you want to brighten up your day.
