A to Z Challenge – Zombieland and Zooropa by U2, Ninja News, and Big Thanks

Last day of the Challenge – did you survive?

My theme for the A to Z Challenge is Favorite Movies, Bloggers, and Music! I’ll name a favorite movie that corresponds with the letter, and then select a character from the film. I will then name a favorite blogger who reminds me of that character, and then dedicate a song to him. (Also corresponding with the alphabet.) I’ll wrap it all up with trivia and/or fun facts about the movie, the blogger, or the music!

In addition, two lucky commenters this month will receive a review copy of CassaStorm! One comment per day and each is worth one entry except – the first and one hundredth comments on each day will receive ten entries! Winners will be announced May 6.

Zombieland

One word – hilarious. Two words – double tap! This film isn’t just funny, it’s very educational in learning how to survive a zombie apocalypse. Great performances from everyone, especially Harrelson as he searches for his Twinkies.

Little Rock is wise and crafty for her age. And yet her youthfulness shines through in her uninhibited joy and enthusiasm. All she really wants is to go play at that amusement park and she doesn’t want to do it alone.

Who is Little Rock?

Livia!

(Even though she doesn’t like horror films. And probably thinks I forgot her!)

Livia is young and full of enthusiasm. She’s a bundle of joy and energy that us older folks wish we could bottle as save for later. Livia throws herself into her passions one hundred percent, and that includes her devotion to her friends. It has been a total delight getting to know her.

Livia is a writer, movie buff, and resident cheerleader.

To you I dedicate Zooropa by U2. (Title leads to YouTube.)

Because it has a timeless feel to it, something your spirit possesses. “And I don’t know the limit…” (And because I’m sure dedicating T-Ride’s Zombies From Hell would’ve disturbed you, even if it did fit the movie. That’s all right, Livia – we still adore you!)

Trivia and Facts:

All of the characters in Zombieland were named after cities – name them! (I already gave you one answer.)

Y’s trivia answer – Rush formed in 1968.

Don’t forget the Best/Worst Movie Remake Blogfest on May 17!
Hosted by me, Stephen Tremp, Livia Peterson, and Al Diaz.
When Hollywood runs out of ideas, they remake older films. Sometimes this works, and sometimes it fails miserably.
On May 17, list the best remake you’ve ever seen and the worst.
Added bonus – list the worst and/or best song remake you’ve ever heard!

Big Thanks to the Team!

Thanks to my fellow A to Z Hosts, Damyanti Biswas, Tina Downey, DL Hammons, Jeremy Hawkins, Shannon Lawrence Matthew MacNish Konstanz Silverbow, Stephen Tremp, Livia Peterson, L. Diane Wolfe, and Nicole.
Special thanks to founder Arlee Bird at Tossing It Out. Four years now and it’s still just as awesome! Thanks for your incredible vision.

A big thanks to my awesome Ninja Minions team, Al Diaz, Baygirl, Ciara Knight, Elise Fallson, Heather Gardner, JL Campbell, Joylene Nowell Butler, and Michelle. You helped me far more than you realize.

Special note to Father Dragon Al-

Good news and bad news!

No dwarves were harmed or killed while performing their minion duties. In fact, they have picked up many amazing Ninja skills. Even Pancholin is graceful and confident now.

However, they found the clone machine. I will be returning four times as many dwarves as were sent.

Oh, and they now want a cloning machine for the Dragon Cave. And a teleporter if possible.

Sorry. I think I spoiled them.

Good luck and thanks, Al!

Fan of Zombieland? Following Livia? Any U2 fans out there? Ready for the IWSG tomorrow? Signed up for the blogfest? And did you have a good time with the Challenge?

Big thanks to everyone who visited me this past month – you guys rock!

A to Z Challenge – YYZ by Rush, May Movie Preview, Indiestructible, and Seeing Ghosts

Since I couldn’t name a favorite movie for this letter, and I needed a place to announce the May movie releases, this offering will be a little different. My monthly feature of listing a variety of upcoming movies reminds me of someone else who does a regular feature of movie clips variety.

Robin at Your Daily Dose!

She has a weekly feature called Here’s to You Thursday where she dedicates movie and TV footages to certain people. And it’s cool to figure out why she chose that particular clip. But that feature exemplifies her greatest quality – a caring spirit. Everything from her posts to her comments reveals her affectionate and devoted nature.

Robin is a writer and unofficial blog therapist.

To you I dedicate YYZ by Rush. (Title leads to YouTube.)

Because it is one of the most amazing and intricate instrumentals, and the song cannot be placed neatly in a box – and neither can you!

Trivia and Facts:

Did you know YYZ is one of the songs on Guitar Hero?

What year did Rush form?

X’s Trivia answer – X2’s William Stryker was played by Brian Cox.

A to Z Challenge – X2 and Xanadu, Plus Ninjs News, Rise of the Guardians Review, and Writing Erotica

X2

This is my favorite of the X-Men series, as I felt it captured the feel of the comics best. Great opening sequence with Nightcrawler in the White House and every scene with Wolverine kicked butt. It also showed us a lot more of the vast X-Men army.

Jean Grey grows stronger as a person in this film. The only X-Men member without a nickname might not stand out in the crowd, but she’s a powerful force. She has abilities beyond what the others can imagine.

Who is Jean Grey?

Joylene Nowell Butler!

She might seem like just another author, but there’s a lot more to her than meets the eye. Joylene is a dedicated force, both to her craft and her friends. She’s already won an IPPY award, so there’s no telling what else she will accomplish!

Joylene is the author of Broken But Not Dead and Dead Witness.

To you I dedicate Xanadu by Rush. (Title leads to YouTube.)

The song is based on the poem “Kubla Khan,” something I thought you would appreciate. “To stand within the pleasure dome, Decreed by Kubla Khan…”

Trivia and Facts:

Who played the villain William Stryker in X2?

W’s trivia answers – Karen lives in Albuquerque, NM, USA, and HG Wells wrote War of the Worlds in 1898.

Ninja News

SC announced the agents for Query Combat – and a mini contest before it begins.

Movie Review

Rise of the Guardians

Finally got a chance to see this one. I liked their take on the characters – a Russian Santa, an Australian Easter Bunny, etc. The animation is unique – the people were done simplistic while the scenery was in amazing detail. Overall, too long (even at ninety minutes) but worth a rental.

Writing Erotica

Richard Hughes posted about why writing erotica is a woman’s thing.

My response was that I don’t want to write it, I want to do it. (Hey, being honest here!)

Here’s what would happen if I tried to write a sex scene:

Write one line.

“Crap, that’s awful.”

Delete. Write a new line.

Bark of laughter. “That’s even worse!”

Delete. Write another line.

“Now that’s not bad…”

Ditches writing sex scene and goes in search of wife for the real thing.

That’s why you’ll never get anything remotely sexual from me! (Not to mention it just goes against my morals.) Any other men feel the same way?

Fan of the X-Men movies? Following the awesome Joylene? Know the trivia? Excited about the agent contest? Seen Rise of the Guardians? And how do you feel about erotica?

A to Z Challenge – War of the Worlds and Won’t Back Down, Plus Ninja News, Hemlock Grove, and Upcoming 2013 Movies

War of the Worlds

I really dug Spielberg’s take on the story. The first alien attack is harrowing. It’s a realistic portrayal of an alien invasion from the point of view of the average Joe just trying to stay alive. Cruise’s character doesn’t save the world, but he does save his family.

Ray’s had some family issues over the years, and the story begins right in the middle of those. Yet despite the challenges, he holds it together and does what is right for his kids. He gains their respect and love in the process, and he gains it for himself as well. Ray emerges stronger and better.

Who is Ray?

Karen Walker!

If you haven’t read her memoir, you need to. Karen went through some tough things with her family, and lost her own self-respect along the way. But she found her balance and peace, with herself and her family, and grew stronger and bolder. Her journey is to be admired.

Karen is the author of Following the Whispers and a professional singer.

To you I dedicate I Won’t Back Down by Fuel. (Title leads to YouTube.)

"I won't back down, I will not bow, I've come to bring you hell..." Because you aren’t backing down, Karen. You are bringing hell to your past and winning.

Trivia and Facts:

Where does Karen live?

What year did HG Wells write War of the Worlds?

V’s trivia answers – Mark’s wife is an U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander, and “At any rate, I am convinced that God does not play dice,” an objection to quantum theory, was said by Albert Einstein.

Ninja News and Entertainment News

Mel gave me the Very Inspiring Blogger award. I’ve received it before, so just want to thank Mel.

Liesel Hill posted this yesterday and I thought it was awesome:
God did not create evil. Just as darkness is the absence of light, evil is the absence of God.--Albert Einstein

Hemlock Grove
This is a watch now original series on NetFlix.
It’s a slightly twisted Hardy Boys adventure. Like something you’d see on the CW except with gore and sex. Has a soap opera quality to it. I was a little disappointed with the season finale. Without giving anything away, all I can say is “Seen it! Do something new.”
If you’re in the mood for pulpy, gothic noir with smoking hot Famke Janssem, you could do worse than Hemlock Grove.

My May Movie Preview will be posted Monday, but thought I’d give you a sample of the awesome movies coming after that:
Man of Steel
World War Z
The Lone Ranger
Pacific Rim
The Wolverine
Elysium
Riddick
Ender’s Game
Thor: The Dark World
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Yes, this year is a geek’s paradise!

Fan of the War of the Worlds remake? Following Karen? Have you watched Hemlock Grove? And what movies are you excited to see?

A to Z Challenge – V for Vendetta and Valley of the Kings, Plus Ninja News and Breaking the Reins

V for Vendetta

Based on a graphic novel that is loosely based on a real life event, this film is clever. It contains a great twist in the middle that you don’t see coming. Hugo Weaving is awesome, conveying so much through a mask for the entire film. And one learns a bit about Guy Fawkes in the process!

V is a man with a vision and a purpose. Although his methods are violent and a bit warped, you have to admire that he never wavers. He sticks to his values and convictions.

Who is V?

Mark Koopmans!

(Minus the mask, of course. And the homicidal tendencies. But Mark is a madman.)

Mark has a vision for his family and life. His values are very grounded and he sticks to his Faith. He’s proud of his heritage and his Christian beliefs, and I really admire him for that. He might just be a little crazy as well…

Mark is a writer, devoted father and husband, and resident Irish Madman.

To you I dedicate Valley of the Kings by Blue Murder. (Title leads to YouTube.)

Because you understand… “A thousand souls plead for mercy, A thousand times over, You’ll hear it on the wind, These sinners never sinned…”

Trivia and Facts:

We know Mark is a stay-at-home dad – what does his wife do?

There’s a line in the film about God playing dice with the universe, which originally came from this line – “At any rate, I am convinced that God does not play dice,” an objection to quantum theory. Who said it?

U’s trivia answer – In Geek mythology, “Selene” means the Moon.

A to Z Challenge – Underworld and Under a Glass Moon, Plus Ninja News

Underworld

I’m sure this selection comes as no surprise! (Had it not been for Kate in black leather, I would’ve picked The Usual Suspects.) Vampires versus werewolves – just can’t go wrong with that combination.

Selena is loyal to her clan and justice. She’s there in the shadows, ready to take down evil, and proud of who she is. Selena is also just bad-ass cool. Who wouldn’t want to hang with someone like her?

Who is Selena?

Allison at Geek Banter!!

(Minus the leather outfit, although it wouldn’t surprise me if she knew how to use a sword and crossbow.)

Her profile states right up front that she loves Jesus, which is very admirable. And from that point, she becomes even more cool as she reveals her geeky side. For those into games, fantasy, science fiction, and other geek pursuits, that makes her beyond awesome. I’d definitely hang with Allison.

Allison is a writer, reviewer, gamer, and resident geek expert.

To you I dedicate Under a Glass Moon by Dream Theater. (Song title leads to YouTube.)

You will appreciate the music and the imagery. “Beneath a summer sky, Under a glass moonlight, Night awaits the lamb’s arrival…”

Trivia and Facts:

In Greek mythology, “Selene” means what…?

T’s trivia answer - The largest independent college of contemporary music in the world is Berklee College of Music, located in Boston.

A to Z Challenge – Terminator 2 and Trial of Tears, Plus Ninja News

Terminator 2: Judgment Day

This film was before its time and shocked everyone with its large budget. (It went on to make a ton of money though.) T2 is an incredible science fiction action film that stands up even today. Another Cameron masterpiece.

John Conner is Sarah’s son. He’s not quite sure what he is doing or his purpose. He wants to believe and he wants connection. John is raw, uninhibited, and genuine. And whether he realizes it or not, he’s destined for great things.

Who is John Conner?

Yolanda at Defending the Pen!

She entered our world unsure of where she belonged or what she wanted to do. She knows she needs to be tough, but she doesn’t want to do it alone. She is just as genuine and real, and I see great things in her future!

Yolanda is a writer and defender of all that is literary. And a very cool blogger buddy.

To you I dedicate Trial of Tears by Dream Theater. (Title leads to YouTube.)

Doesn’t matter where you’ve been or who you once were – who are you now? “Take a look at yourself, Not at anyone else, And tell me what you see…”

Trivia and Facts:

Several of Dream Theater’s members attended the largest independent college of contemporary music in the world, located in Boston – name it.

What food is Yolanda allergic to?

S’s trivia answer – none! Serenity was Joss Whedon’s first film.

Serenity

It brought closure to the series Firefly. (And yes I could go on a tirade about FOX cancelling the show way too soon.) This film stands on its own a great science fiction movie though. It has great characters and crackling dialogue. Long live Browncoats!

Kaylee is the engineer who keeps it all running. She is sassy, perky, and not afraid to say her peace. She’s also adorable, genuine, and funny. Kaylee is the heart and the spirit.

Who is Kaylee?

Heather Gardner at The Waiting is the Hardest Part!

She possesses pluck, sass, and a wicked sense of humor. Her spirit shines through in Stormy the Weather Gnome as he makes witty observations regarding his surroundings. Heather has such a great heart. If the ship goes down, I know I can count on her to still be there.

Heather is a writer, gnome wrangler, and one excellent Ninja Minion.

To you I dedicate Stop the World by Extreme. (Title leads to YouTube.)

I thought you would appreciate the humor of the song! “Stop the world, I wanna get off…”

Trivia and Facts:

Did you know DVDs of Serenity and Firefly were taken to the International Space Station?

What movies did Joss Whedon direct before Serenity?

A to Z Challenge – The Road Warrior and Rest in Peace, Plus Ninja News and Oblivion Movie Review

The Road Warrior

Without a doubt the greatest chase movie ever. A post-apocalyptic world that is brutal but not lacking a sense of humor. Every guy wanted to be Max because he was so damn cool. (And be honest - you wanted to drive a tanker over some jerk after watching this!)

The Gyro Pilot is a slightly unbalanced man just trying to survive. At first he seems concerned only with himself, but he joins the cause and fights with the others. He has swagger and charm, a wicked sense of humor, and leads the others to a better way of life.

Who is the Gyro Pilot?

Gary at Klahanie!

Gary openly admits he struggles with issues and some days, it’s all he can do to get by. But at his heart, he is willing to sacrifice for others. Armed with Penny the Dog and Modest Internet Superstar, he stands for what is right and champions his friends. Add in his swagger and sense of humor, and Gary will charm your socks off.

Gary is an advocate for awareness of mental health issues and owned by Penny. He is also the Unofficial Anti-A to Z Challenge Mascot. (And we are proud to claim him.)

I dedicate to you Rest in Peace by Extreme.  (Title leads to YouTube.)

“Straight through the heart, Peace can be found, That’s where you start…”

Trivia and Facts:

Who directed The Road Warrior?

Extreme’s song Play With Me was featured in this 1989 film during the mall scene – name the science fiction comedy.

Q’s trivia answer – Iron Maiden’s mascot is Eddie.

Oblivion Movie Review

Jack (Tom Cruise) and Victoria oversee the final stages of extracting resources from Earth (after its near destruction by aliens) before joining the others on Titan. However, Jack has questions – and a reoccurring dream.
The film’s overall storyline is unique, even as it borrows tiny bits from other movies. But there are several twists in the plot that keep it refreshing and a puzzle.
Special effects are great without being overwhelming. Jack’s ship is especially cool. (And my wife now wants a pool in the sky.)
It is slightly overlong, but at two hours, it won’t kill you.
It won’t completely knock your socks off, but you will be pleasantly surprised – and surprised more than once. Recommended!

Any Road Warriors out there? Fan of Gary and Penny? Remember Extreme’s Rest in Peace? Know the trivia? Ready for a query contest? And did anybody else see Oblivion?

In addition, two lucky commenters this month will receive a review copy of CassaStorm! One comment per day and each is worth one entry except – the first and one hundredth comments on each day will receive ten entries!

The Quick and the Dead

Sam Raimi brings his crazy directorial style to a western. It boasts a great cast – you’ll be amazed just how many stars are in this film. (If you can find the director’s cut, you’ll see Bruce Campbell.) It’s a real bigger than life western.

Ellen is a gunslinger with a troubled past and set on vengeance. She’s dangerous and tough, but her vulnerability is what makes her appealing. Ellen has set her sights on her goal and nothing will stop her now.

Who is Ellen?

Ellie Garratt!

(Similarity of names purely coincidental.)

Troubles and challenges entered Ellie’s life, but she emerged stronger than before. Focused and determined to succeed, she has done just that and more. We don’t see much of the real Ellie, but that is her vulnerability. Overall, it makes for a very endearing combination.

Ellie Garratt is the author of Passing Time and lives in the UK

To you I dedicate Quest for Fire by Iron Maiden. (Title leads to YouTube.)

Because I thought not only would you appreciate the band, but the storyline of the song (and the equally funny and cheesy video) – “Then the tribes they came to steal their fire, And the wolves they howled into the night…”

Trivia and Facts:

Did you know that Sharon Stone was so insistent that Leonardo DiCaprio appear in the film that she paid his salary?

What is the name of Iron Maiden’s mascot?

P’s trivia answer – The Princess Bride novel and screenplay were both written by William Goldman.

Theme Song for CassaStorm

I’d meant to post this when I revealed the cover and forgot! I’d shared it with my critique partners before sending the manuscript, as the piece really captures the tone of the book. I don’t normally get into soundtracks, but my wife loves the soundtrack for Tron: Legacy, and once I heard this song, it became the theme song for CassaStorm. I think once you hear it you’ll see that the tone of this book is a little darker than the last one. I’m really counting on Bassan, Byron's ten-year-old son, to balance it out.

Start the video at 1:35 for full impact.

A storm gathers across the galaxy…

Byron thought he’d put the days of battle behind him. Commanding the Cassan base on Tgren, his only struggles are occasional rogue pirate raids and endless government bureaucracies. As a galaxy-wide war encroaches upon desert planet, Byron’s ideal life is threatened and he’s caught between the Tgrens and the Cassans.

After enemy ships attack the desert planet, Byron discovers another battle within his own family. The declaration of war between all ten races triggers nightmares in his son, shaking Bassan to the core and threatening to destroy the boy’s mind.

Meanwhile the ancient alien ship is transmitting a code that might signal the end of all life in the galaxy. And the mysterious probe that almost destroyed Tgren twenty years ago could be on its way back. As his world begins to crumble, Byron suspects a connection. The storm is about to break, and Byron is caught in the middle…

Fan of The Quick and the Dead? Following Ellie? Any Iron Maiden fans out there? Can you name their mascot? Entered the giveaway? And what do you think of the synopsis now that you’ve heard the music behind it? This Ninja would really like to know…

Seeing Oblivion this afternoon – fingers crossed!
