So much stuff and so little time…

Thanks to everyone who joined the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! It’s so awesome how writers pull together. Looking forward to everyone’s post on September 7. And a special thanks to those who plugged the group – Michelle, Karen, Heather, Tessa, MJ, and Hart.

Today is Fantastic Friday Writers and the topic is creatures.

After seeing the movie The Trollhunter, I decided to go with trolls. Doing a little research online, I discovered most of the facts presented in the film were true. (Well, as true as they’re going to get!) Trolls originated from Norse mythology. They are portrayed as old, strong, slow, man eaters, and repulsed by happiness. And yes, they do turn to stone when exposed to sunlight. They are also featured in D&D, which is where I first learned of trolls. (Big surprise, huh?)

Anyone have a troll story to tell?

I also succumbed to the pressure and joined The Writers' Platform-Building Campaign. Apparently, the Insecure Writer’s Support Group, numerous upcoming guest posts, writing my next book, and preparation for my next book release just wasn’t enough!

The Writers' Platform-Building Campaign is a way to link those of us in the writing community together with the aim of helping to build our online platforms. The Campaigners are all bloggers in a similar position, who genuinely want to pay it forward, make connections and friends within the writing community, and help build each others' online platforms while at the same time building theirs.

Anyone else part of the Campaign?

Meanwhile, in addition to the earthquake on Tuesday, we have a hurricane bearing down on us this weekend. I live far enough inland that we’ll just see wind and rain, but the coast is going to get hammered.

And at some point, I intend to hit the movie theater.

Fantastic Friday Writers – Marketing Tips and Tricks

I’m not an expert on marketing, but there is one tip I can offer - don’t use your blog just to advertise. Sure, when you’re doing a blog tour or there’s a big moment, let everyone know. But don’t venture into blogging to advertise. Come here to make friends.

Why do I think that’s important? Because I can’t begin to tell you how many of my blogger buddies purchased my book just because they like me. For many, it was their first science fiction book! It’s really flattering and humbling.

If I’d focused on selling my book rather than making friends, I would’ve missed a great opportunity. And not just in the books I wouldn’t have sold, but in the priceless value of the friendships I would’ve missed.

Crap, I think I just learned something. Thanks, guys!

Today’s Fantastic Friday Writers topic is technology.

It’s a given that science fiction involves technology. Whether set in present day, the future, or a distant galaxy, new devices and gadgets will appear. Some people revel in technology. Some want it simple so the story moves along. Others shy away from it.

It’s no secret I dig computers, tech toys, and gadgets. Heck, I’ve hooked up so many components to the TV, my wife doesn’t even know how to turn it on! But since I work with it every day, I didn’t want to focus on it in my writing. Sure, there are spaceships and teleporters, but I don’t delve into the details. I put in just enough to make it plausible. It’s there, just simple.

Besides, I have no idea how a teleporter works, do you?

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Director: Rupert Wyatt
Stars: James Franco, Andy Serkis, Freida Pinto
The Plot: In present day San Francisco, a scientist (Franco) looks for a cure for Alzheimer's disease by experimenting on a chimpanzee named Caesar. The development of animal intelligence brings about a war for supremacy between humans and apes.
Not impressed with the trailer - the CGI apes do not look real. I also don’t buy that there are enough apes in San Francisco to take over the city. This one will need outstanding reviews to get me into the theater.

Stars: Jason Momoa, Ron Perlman, Rose McGowan
The Plot: Muscle-bound warrior Conan the Cimmerian (Momoa) seeks to avenge the murder of his father and the slaughter of his village.
Conan the Barbarian. Momoa from Stargate:Atlantis. Need I say more? Oh, and it’s rated R - can’t have a PG13 barbarian film! They do it right, this could be the start of an awesome franchise.

Fright Night
Director: Craig Gillespie
Stars: Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, David Tennant
The Plot: Teenager Charley Brewster (Yelchin) guesses that his new neighbor Jerry Dandrige (Farrell) is a vampire responsible for a string of recent deaths. When no one he knows believes him, he enlists Peter Vincent (Tennant), the opportunistic host of his favorite TV show, to help him take down Jerry and his guardian.
The first Fright Night was fun. This remake is going to have to do something really awesome to even come close, especially without Roddy McDowall. Again, a wait and see what the critics think…

Rejections and You Rock!

The Fantastic Friday Writers topic today is handling rejections. Fun for all!

Nobody likes rejections, but they happen to everyone. I think it’s easier when you don’t place your life’s value on acceptance. Earlier this week, Karen Walker had a guest post on expectations, and it really resonated with me. I didn’t have high expectations. Writing a book wasn’t the only thing I wanted to do with my life, either. So, those initial rejections didn’t kill me. I decided if it wasn’t going to happen, I would be all right. (Thus, I was really surprised when it did happen!)

He’s genuine – a rare trait these days. Dedicated to his blog, followers, and friends, I can always count on Chuck for a boost and a laugh. His blog has really morphed and grown over the past year, and it’s been cool to watch. I want the best for you, Chuck – you rock!

He reminded me earlier this week about the real meaning of friendship – we stick by one another no matter what. We’re a kindred spirit when it comes to movies and it sucks that he lives on the other side of the world. Appreciate the friendship and support, George – you rock!

Casting a Darkspell

Thanks again to Melissa for Friday’s post on books to movies – she really churned up the discussion. And don’t forget – season premier of Eureka and Warehouse 13, and series premier of Alphas on the SyFy Channel. I know where I’ll be for three hours…

But today it’s all about Elizabeth Mueller! One of my Fantastic Friday Writers buddies. she can best be described as joyful, spiritually grounded, generous, and just so beautiful. Her very first book, Darkspell, comes out this fall from TreasureLine Books. And I know it will rock because the hero’s name is Alex!

Enough Ninja chatter – here’s Elizabeth:

So, which came first? My children, or my writing?

I’m a stay-at-home mom with four lively kids. There’s never a boring second. The house unravels the time they awaken—it’s nonstop fighting, whining, and messing. Aside from the headaches, I’ve learned so much from them. Patience, joy, love, and lots of humility.

So, what about my writing?

It has always been a part of my life. It was easy enough before kids, but when they started pouring in, I had to create time. I wrote right after I tucked them in, and pushed late into the mornings. I’ve actually completed 8 books of squeezing time!

Just 4 years ago, I decided to take my writing a step further. Publishing! I attended writers conferences, learned the rules, joined critique groups, critiqued for others, query writing and submitting. Needless to say, I’ve felt the sting of rejections. Ouch!

Guess what? It was not until late March of this year that I decided to take another chance and submit one of my novels.

Darkspell was accepted by TreasureLine Books! I was SO not expecting my book to be picked up. After 20 years of writing, I’ve finally reached my aspirations! So much to the point that I didn’t know what to do, like the car-chasing dog that has finally caught one.

About my book: Winter Sky believes she is everything ordinary . . . until she is kissed by Alex Stormhold. As seer of Stormhold Coven, Alex is sworn to be Winter’s protector against the darkness that hunts her. Violently thrust into a magical realm she always thought impossible, she stumbles upon a disturbing secret of her own.

Darkspell is a YA Paranormal Romance, coming fall of 2011!

I wrote this book before I met Alex Cavanaugh—the names are purely coincidental.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Giant fighting robots! Lots of action! Special effects! Chicago in ruins! (Sorry, Michael.) And if you’re expecting anything more from the third film from Michael Bay based on a toy line, forget it. Wasn’t perfect – editing seemed rushed – but better than the second film. And in 3D – whoa! Leave brain at door and prepare for eye candy.

Fantastic Friday Writers - The Science in Science Fiction

I’m not tech or science heavy in my writing. (You want some science tips, visit Stephen Tremp.) But it does all have to make sense, even if you’re messing with physics. And it needs consistency. My greatest challenge was with the teleporters found on the Cassan’s ships. It’s almost a symbiotic relationship between the mechanical device that powers the jump and the Cassan’s mental ability to fold space. Once I had the logistics figured out, I had to adhere to the rules I’d created. (Which meant the final battle scene went through many rewrites as I tried to figure out how to make it all work!)

Entertainment Weekly gave this cinematic suppository an F+. My expectations are not quite that high.


9:00 - When the producer of the film is named Badish, it pretty much sets the tone.


9:02 - Drunken revelers starting off a movie about a rogue shark. Now where have I seen that before?


9:10 - I'm literally watching D.B. Sweeney and Kristy Swanson destroy their careers (sad.)


9:12 - This movie was either edited by seven monkeys with scissors or Freddie Krueger and Edward Scissorhands.


9:14 - Just to make sure they have every movie stereotype in place, they now introduce the moronic, hard-partying frat boy.


9:16 - Impatiently waiting for the loveable drunk to get eaten.


9:17 - Does this mean the shark is now drunk or is it more like eating half a rum cake?


9:42 - Apparently, there is an app for hunting a rogue shark with gator radio beacons lodged in its stomach. Apple rocks!


10:18 - D.B. Sweeney takes Kristy Swanson to see chewed up corpses in the morgue - now that's what I call a first date. (Eat your heart out ladies!)


10:22 - Idiotic frat boy finally gets eaten - and there was much rejoicing.


That's all I can take folks, I can't watch anymore. However, I assume the shark ends up eating the entire state of Louisiana, gets bad indigestion from a funky batch of gumbo, and explodes.

Now where’s my Hot Tamales???

FFW - Critique Partners & BIG Surprise!!!

Well, there’s a good chance I’ll be skipping the theater this weekend – Green Lantern is getting awful reviews. That sucks - I’ve been looking forward to this film for so long!

On the positive side, Mel gave me the Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award and The Yard Bard gave me the Stylish Blogger Award. Thanks, ladies!

Today’s topic for the Fantastic Friday Writers is critique partners. I’m stoked – not only was this my suggestion, but it gives me the opportunity to brag on my critique buddies.

For those who’ve hesitated to find a critique partner, let me put you at ease. When you find the right ones, it’s awesome! There’s a ton of advice on what to look for in a CP as far as compatibility, strengths, experience – all that stuff. I’m just going to describe what my three CP bring to the table and maybe that will help you in your search. (Hey, you didn’t come here for expert advice anyway, right?)

Jeffrey Beesler is the detail man. He sees repetition, passive phrases, pronoun confusion – all the small stuff I tend to miss. He doesn’t hold back – he lets me know when something doesn’t work. Jeffrey gives it to me straight and I respect that!

Anne Gallagher writes romance. She is the master of relationships. Anne brings the passion. She looks for the flow between the two main characters, as well as my numerous typos. And, she is also part of my target audience – I was stunned how many non-science fiction people read my first book, and I want to continue writing stories they enjoy.

Rusty Webb keeps me sane. He sees repetition of phrases & words and unnecessary modifiers. Rusty also makes suggestions – detailed suggestions – of what I could add or modify or explain better. He goes to great lengths to give me ideas. Most important, Rusty does it all with humor. And for that dude, I salute you!

Now, what do you want in a critique partner? If you have them, what are they like? And do they make Coke come out of your nose?

It’s Fantastic Friday Writers again, with my partners Elizabeth, Anastasia, J. D., Deirdre, M. Pax, and Jeffrey.

Today – how to keep up the flow of ideas without abandoning current project.

This is Captain Ninja Alex’s Everything but the Kitchen Sink method:

When those new ideas hit in the middle of a project, dump them in your manuscript!

You heard me! Toss it into the mixture and see if the idea works. Hey, you don’t want those new ideas distracting you from your current manuscript, do you? Put them to work in your project rather than let them take over your imagination and attention. If the idea fits, great! If not, set it aside.

Does it work? Hey, I did it with the sequel to my book. Every time something new struck me, I threw it in the story. I tossed everything but the kitchen sink at Byron. (Thus the name!) And since my critique partners actually liked the results, I’d have to say affirmative!

Anyone care to share a method that’s a little less hap hazardous? I feel this post needs a disclaimer – should not be taken in place of real writing tips.

News, Pirates, and FFW - The Query

First, I’ve got some awesome news from around the blogging world!

Ann Carbine Best’s book, “In The Mirror,” was released this past Tuesday. It’s a powerful memoir and I admire the strength required to tell this story. Go check it out and give Ann a hug!

Wendy Tyler Ryan also had a book release this week – “Fire’s Daughter” Go admire the fireworks at her blog and tell her congratulations!

I’ve been grateful for all the awesome reviews of CassaStar, but this one really surprised me. I’ve followed Aleta’s BLOG for a while now and I had no idea she was reading my book until Monday night when it appeared at the top of my Google Reader. I was stunned! And if you’ve never visited Aleta’s blog, you need to pay her a visit. The only way I can describe it is ‘love.’

Query Letters – Tips and Advice

That topic made me chuckle. Advice? From me? I think the only thing I did right on my query letter was make it short. My synopsis was a whole six lines. Pretty sure I spelled every word correctly as well. Yeah, I can tell I’m really rocking your world with those tips!

However, I can tell you where to go for great feedback! Matthew at The Quintessentially Questionable Query Experiment posts and critiques query letters every week. He provides a full analysis and others add their two cents worth in the comments. Matthew is a sharp dude and his suggestions are awesome. So, if you want some REAL advice, visit his site!

And I’m seeing Pirates of the Caribbean this weekend. Anyone care to come along and keep me amused in case it sucks? I’ll splurge for the Hot Tamales…

Names and what they mean…

Some writers ponder long and hard when selecting names for their characters. They research the origins and meaning, looking for just the right name to fit their characters. Some writers create a complex history and even a whole new language to give credibility to the names.

And if you’ve come here looking for tips on any of that – well, you’re in the wrong place! But maybe you’ll glean something from my simplistic approach.

Byron and Bassa were names from my original manuscript and I have no idea of their origins. I liked the strength of those names, so I kept them. However, I did need a supporting cast. (They couldn’t all be ‘Bob,’ now could they?) I spent an hour brainstorming unique, alien-sounding names that were easy to pronounce. (Sorry about “Ernx!” It’s pronounced “Urnks” with a hard K.) I noticed as I wrote down names that most had a similar feel and style and decided I was on the right track. Afterwards, I just matched characters with names. And filled in all the blanks in my manuscript!

How does everyone else come up with character names? And does it take you more than an hour?

Fast Five

Diesel and Walker are back for the fifth (and best) installment of the series. Yes, there are some amazing car chases and action scenes, but guess what? There’s also a really good story as well. One reviewer call it “Ocean’s 14” and that’s a fitting description. The guys are out to take down Reyes, Rio’s top mafia man, by stealing all of his money, and enlist a team of experts to help.

Diesel, Walker, and Johnson (The Rock) do what they do best, and for two hours, we get to enjoy the ride. Yes, it’s a testosterone rush – but it’s a fun rush! If you enjoyed the other movies (third one doesn’t count) you’ll really dig Fast Five.

And now I really want to drive like a reckless maniac on the streets of Rio… Care to join me? Oh wait, Thor comes out today. Want to drive fast to the theater instead?

Genre

This one is easy – my genre is science fiction. My first book was published last fall, and I am currently working on the sequel. (Thanks to the help of some amazing critique partners and test readers!) I also enjoy reading fantasy and thrillers, although not sure if I’m ready to attempt to write in those genres.

But you never know. Ninjas can be sneaky!

Languages

I decided not to create a new language for the world in CassaStar. I didn’t feel it was necessary.

I did have to create alien names, though. Science fiction names can be complicated and a challenge to pronounce, so I tried to keep them simple: Bassa, Trindel, Hanner, Ernx – bonus points to anyone who knows how to pronounce that last one. Sound it out – it’s easy!

I also had to make a decision on ‘colorful language.’ I’ve been around fighter pilots – they know how to cuss! Should I use earth terms or make up words? (Like Battlestar Galactica’s frack.) I don’t like to cuss (much) so I settled on one, low-offensive word: damn.

If any of you are creating a new language, let me know how you’re doing it!

And I am taking an extended weekend away with my wife (so she doesn’t disown me next month during the A to Z Challenge) so I may be scarce for a couple days. I'll try to check in - after all, I never go anywhere without my iPad!

It’s been a busy week in the blogging world!

Yvonne at Welcome to my World of Poetry hit 300 followers this week. She’s an amazing poet and I’m thrilled 300 other people besides me think so as well.

Nebular at Cinemarvellous just celebrated his birthday! He runs an excellent movie review site (and does a far better job than me) so if you are a movie buff, you’d benefit from following Cinemarvellous.

Talli Roland’s new book came out in paperback this week! Go show her some love. And tell Talli she’s the cutest Canadian-Brit ever. (This has been verified.)

Don’t forget the A to Z Challenge! We’re over 400 participants and cruising toward 500. Magic and Magic Rules

Nothing like asking the science fiction writer about magic! Here’s the short and sweet: The cool thing about magic is you can make up any rules. The sky’s the limit! But those rules must be consistent in your world’s setting.

If I were writing fantasy, these would be some of my rules:

Good and evil magic must be balanced

Objects can be imbued with magical powers but can’t be in of themselves magic.

Magic cannot be used to force people to do things against their will.

Magic is an innate ability to be trained - one can’t learn it just by studying magic

Real warlocks have three nipples. Just kidding! Wanted to see if you were still paying attention.

So, what are some of your magic rules?

As the numbers swell, you might be wondering – how on earth will I visit all of those blogs in a day? The answer? You can’t! Not even Captain Ninja Alex can master that feat.

Can you visit about a dozen a day? That’s what this Challenge is all about – finding new blogger friends. Explore the list on a daily basis and visit a handful of the bloggers. Fantastic Friday Writers – Research Tip!

Since research is such a broad subject, I decided to focus on the research I conducted for my book’s space fighters. And I’ll make it simple for you!

Go with fact –Military fighter jets most closely resemble my book’s Cosbolts. I researched plane design and flight, and even spoke to some fighter pilots. I wanted to convey the proper feel of flight and use the correct lingo.

Go with speculation – Since real space fighters don’t exist, I turned to the next best thing – science fiction movies and TV shows. Anything that showed fighters in action! I needed a good sense of movement, firepower, and the craft’s capabilities.

Between fact and speculation, I came up with the look, feel, and movement of my Cosbolts!

Anyone else use both fact and speculation?

And who’s ready for a good science fiction movie now???

Once again, I’m sure my take on this topic will be way out in left field compared to my fellow FFW. Rather than post the beginning of my first chapter (because dear Lord, you’re not reading all that!) I’m going to do something different.

When writing, where do I begin? The first chapter. Yes, I create my characters and an outline, but when it comes to actual writing, I start at the beginning. I admire those who start at different points or write scenes and move them around. My brain just doesn’t work that way, though. I start with the first scene and don’t stop until I’ve reached the end!

Working Around Family and Finding Time to Write

And I guarantee my entry will be the most unique!

Some would say family members are those pesky people who get in the way of our writing. They have schedules we’re to follow and demand attention. If it weren’t for family, we could’ve written twenty novels by now!

Oh really?

I think a lot of it has to do with our mindset. Do we view our family as help or hindrance? If we’re struggling to find time to write and balance family life, maybe it’s time for a new approach. Have we tried communication?

The key plot points for a story apply here as well:

WHY? Let our families know why writing is so important.

WHAT? Tell them what we hope to accomplish.

WHEN? Discuss how often we’d like to write and at what times.

WHO? Discuss the duties of the house and the new people who will enter our lives as a result of writing.

HOW? Figure out how to maintain a balance that makes everyone happy.

With good communication and the right attitude, it’s much easier to work writing into our life.

And the “Oh really?” comment? If it weren’t for my family, I wouldn’t be writing at all. My wife is my cheerleader, encourager, and best friend. Without her, I wouldn’t be writing at all and my accomplishments as an author would mean nothing. She’s not a distraction in my life.

Good vs. Evil. And Bad Movies!

First, a quick movie update.

I didn’t post last weekend because Season of the Witch received such abysmal reviews I decided to skip it. Green Hornet is faring better, but haven’t decided if I’ll see it yet. The lure of $30 for tickets, popcorn and drinks isn’t that strong. Maybe I’ll just take my wife to dinner instead.

Someone recently commented that he’s never seen a bad review here. True, I don’t write many. For one thing, I am very selective on which movies I see in the theater, so it’s not often I catch a dud. It does happen though! And if you don’t believe me, check out my reviews of Clash of the Titans and Legend of the Guardians.

I take more chances with NetFlix though. So, if I don’t catch Green Hornet this weekend, I have three mini movie reviews in the wing – all of which I’m glad I saved my money!

And if you want a really bad review, check out my play-by-play of Sharktopus! I need to do that again soon. I’m sure the SyFy Channel will oblige me with another bad movie…

Now, on to Good vs. Evil!

Good vs. evil is a standard story formula. Sometimes it’s subjective, depending on the point of view and amount of grey area. Rather than attempt to define good vs. evil, I’ll just tell you what I prefer in a story.

Good must triumph over evil.

Now there’s some great stories that don’t end that way, but I like to see good come out on top. I like to see the good guys win! Feels hollow if evil wins. After investing time in book or movie, I feel cheated when evil triumphs. (Unless the good guys really suck, then I hope for their demise!)

Everyone has his or her own tastes. For me, good must prevail.

Villains and Fantastic Friday Writers

What goes into your character Bible?

I don’t have a character Bible so much as character Cliff Notes. This is the information I gather in my folder:

Detailed background – family, what happened before the story begins, etc.
Strengths and weaknesses
General appearance – and no, I don’t use photos
“Why?” – why the character does what he does
“Don’t” - I got this from another writer. Make a list of don’ts from your character’s perspective. “Don’t… get close to me.” “Don’t… underestimate my abilities.” Stuff like that.
I also keep detailed notes on the world I am creating, which helps me create the characters

And that’s it! Short and simple.

Fantastic Friday - For Many Reasons!

Today is another edition of Fantastic Friday Writers! I invite your to check out my Fantastic Friday Writers partners - Elizabeth Mueller, Anastasia V. Pergakis, J. D. Brown, and Deirdra Eden Coppel - for their take on this subject. And I’m sure they will all be delighted I came up with more than one paragraph this time!

How do you connect with your MC on a personal level?

The easiest thing would be to create a character similar to me. I think I know myself fairly well! Instead, I created Byron, and while he shares a couple of my traits, he’s very different. Yeah, smart move! Now, how do I relate to this guy?

Connecting with a character implies you have to know them – well. I liken it to making a new friend. We start with facts, then opinions, and then feelings. We take it in layers, like an onion. Guess Shrek was right!

With Byron, I had to discover and embrace his background. What led him to where the story begins? Everything that happened in his past had an impact on his life. I watched him develop as a person. It helped me to understand who he was and why he chose his path. I began to see things from his point of view.

I think that’s where I connected. Byron became real. No, not like the Velveteen Rabbit or anything! He gained dimension. I could feel his frustrations, struggles, and drive to succeed. I respected his desire for privacy and often annoying attitude. I knew that as I wrote the story, I’d be able to properly portray his behavior, thought process, and desires. He was difficult sometimes, but I discovered I really liked Byron.

Which is good, because I’m almost done writing the sequel to CassaStar!
