June Movie Preview, Supporting Other Authors, A Change of Plans, IWSG Wrap-up, and Ninja News

Special guest today - Donna K. Weaver, author of the new release, A Change of Plans!

Alex said I needed to be humorous, so I decided to share a personal experience that inspired a scene on the ship. My father was career Navy, and we traveled by ship to and from some of his duty assignments.

On our way to the Philippines, the waters outside of San Francisco were really rough--plus it was the beginning of 21-day trip. I didn't have my sea legs yet (when your inner ear gets used to the movement). I don't get seasick, but it's still a crazy sensation when the ground is constantly swaying underneath you. You tend to stumble a lot. This ship was a military transport and nothing compared to modern cruise ships.

I remember clinging to the railing as I came down the stairs, staggering into the lounge, and collapsing on to a couch. I didn't really want to get up again right away, so I raised my bump up off the couch to reach for a magazine. The steward, who was vacuuming behind me, thought I was getting up for good and took the chance to move the chair to clean under it.

Um, yeah. I straightened, the ship rocked, and I tried to collapse on the couch again . The couch that wasn't there anymore. Unfortunately, there wasn't an attractive guy behind me with a convenient lap for me to fall into.

Congratulations, Donna – I thought it was funny.

A Question of Support

A friend’s post this week regarding supporting authors received quite the firestorm of comments. (And a really cool cat drawing, which had nothing to do with the post, but it was clever!) It had to do with promoting books through reviews, cover reveals, and release announcements – and do you promote a book you haven’t read?

Here’s my thoughts – that’s up to the individual. And whether it fits the blog or not. (Because some have a theme and it just doesn’t fit.)

Obviously I do post announcements and covers. And here’s why:

1 – The Ninja News
Everyone tells me they come here to get caught up on releases and what’s happening around the blogging world. I’m just reporting the news. And I’m happy to announce anything cool happening with my followers.

2 – The Ninja Army
Once I crossed a thousand followers, I realized I could be really effective at spreading the word for my friends. This blog became a little less about me and more about you guys.

3 – Friendship
When I post about a release or announcement, I’m endorsing the person. I’m doing it because I believe in YOU.

I do it without expecting something in return. I don’t get paid. (Despite the fact I’m bombarded with ad companies and could make money that way. That’s just not how I roll.) I don’t do it just so you will support my books. If you never buy one or post about my books, I’m cool with that. I don’t give to get. I give for all those reasons above.

Where do you fall with promotions? Please no firestorm. (Violators will receive a visit from one or more clones who will proceed to paint your blog a funny color.)

June Movie Preview

Here are the upcoming movies for June! As always, descriptions courtesy of the IMDB. Snarky comments by me.

Man of Steel
A young journalist is forced to confront his secret extraterrestrial heritage when Earth is invaded by members of his race.

21 –

World War Z
United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to destroy humanity itself.
Director: Marc Forster
Stars: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale, David Morse
Zombie apocalypse! Based on a book by Mel Brooks’ son. I wish Mel would adopt me.

Monsters University
A look at the relationship between Mike and Sulley during their days at Monsters University -- when they weren't necessarily the best of friends.

Might just be me, but the previews aren’t funny.

Did you enjoy this month’s IWSG? Excited about the books? What movies catch your eye this month? And how do you feel about promoting others and what are you willing to do?

I don't mind promotions. I'm a grownup and can decide for myself if I want to buy a book or not. I like that your blog announces lots of indie authors I wouldn't otherwise hear about. If your blog was ONLY promotions (like some are) then I wouldn't read it, but having the Ninja News is just one part of why I read your blog.

Brandon Ax said...

I did enjoy the IWSG this month.

Also this month for me is all about Man of Steel. I will see it at least twice if it is bad and who knows if it is the movie I want it to be.

Sorry huge Super-nerd here.

Tonja Drecker said...

Congrats, Lisa! I've been seeing Aberration everywhere. And way to go, Susan. Here's wishing her lots of success.
And I don't have problems with book promotions. It's nice to see what books are out there.

Elise Fallson said...

I don't mind doing cover reveals and helping promote a book. Plus, it's fun to see what kind of designs and artwork people put into their covers. And some of them are really amazing. To me, a cover reveal is helping a blogging friend get the word out about their up and coming book. It’s just an announcement, nothing more, and I think readers understand that. And of all the book covers I've had on my site, all went on to be published. Like you said, it comes down to the bloggers discretion as to how they want to help their fellow bloggers or not.

Annalisa Crawford said...

Promotions are cool, but sometimes I think our bloggy circle is a little closed and we're just promoting to each other. That's good - there's a lot of us - but some outsiders would be good as well. I guess that's where I should pull my finger out and create my own website. Okay, problem solved. Have a great weekend :-)

Mark Koopmans said...

As always, I won't see any of these movies, but will be excited to see which 1993 movie will be "new" on Netflix :)

Empty Nest Insider said...

Congrats to Lisa and Susan! I appreciate all of the promotions you do Alex, and also try to help out now and then. Sounds like we're in for some fun summer movies.

Sheena-kay Graham said...

I loved co-hosting! Thanks so much for picking me Alex and IWSG rocked this week. Congrats Susan on taking the big leap and becoming a full time author. Congrats Ian and Lisa on your books. I too share book covers and it's great letting others know about authors breaking out into the publishing world.

White House Down is a must see. Exploding White House, Jamie Foxx...what's not to like. While I loved the last Superman movie, I do get why others hated it. At the end of the day people want an ass kicking superman and villain. I think Man of Steel will deliver. Oh I'd love a Justice League movie. Still watch the cartoons when I get the chance. I enjoyed Monster's University previews and plan to see it. But I do believe there were better movie ideas they could have used. World War Z has my attention at zombies. Oh hi Brad Pitt. Enjoy your weekend Alex.

Suze said...

Looking forward to 'Man of Steel.'

Have a great weekend, Alex.

Old Kitty said...

Totally Man of Steel for me this month!!! Yay!!

Awww lovely Capn Ninja and his lovely army of Ninjas are so lovely!

Take care

Natalie Aguirre said...

I almost exclusively promote debut and middle grade authors on my blog. I don't do as good promoting all the self-published books by friends. The problem is that it's hard to promote their books when I already have a post scheduled promoting someone else's book. But I do try to get my friends who write in the genres I promote on my blog at least once a year.

I do think it's important that we support each other. I also think that it's more effective when an author promotes their book not just to their circle of friends.

J.L. Murphey said...

Alex,
I've read Lisa's book Aberration. It is awesome.

I love the way you support other authors of blogs and books! I pay it forward quite a bit on my blog, but not daily. Still waiting on the thousand threshold.

This is the End-looks like a hoot satirical look on end-of-the-world movies. Similar to the Scary Movies spoofs.

World War Z is one I can't wait to watch.

White House Down also looks promising.

Unknown said...

Alex, I too support other authors even if I haven't read their works. I try to stick to certain genres, but that doesn't always stick. :)

Man of Steel - with Henry Cavill, how can it NOT be epic???!!? hehehe REALLY looking forward to it, and I truly am hoping they get this one right!

Rick Daley said...

"Man of Steel" looks like it's going to be awesome. The full 2:30 trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will play in front of it.

Ian Anderson said...

Thank you, Alex, for supporting ME! It's great to see my short story on your blog, and I appreciate the chance to have it mentioned somewhere other than my own blog. If other writers were asking me to help them promote their stuff, then I would (my blog doesn't get that much traffic so I don't have the "problem" of deciding whether to support or not)!

Sandra Ulbrich Almazan said...

Congrats to all the ninjas with news, especially Susan!

One of the great things about being a writer is all the support you get from other writers. No matter how you approach writing, it's still hard to create worlds and characters out of your mind--and even harder to succeed. It's important that we support each other, whether that's by becoming fans of other writers or simply spreading the word about their work.

Have a good weekend, everyone!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Thanks, Sean!

Annalisa, glad I could help!

Mark, that made me chuckle.

Sheena-kay, thanks for co-hosting. I used to watch those cartoons all the time.

Natalie, good point.

Rick, that's good to know!

Ian, you're welcome.

Laura Eno said...

Thank you for the opportunity to co-host the IWSG, Alex!

I love that you highlight new releases. It's helping others, nothing more, and the exposure casts a wider net than what the author is capable of doing on their own. I can decide for myself whether the book interests me or not.

Some of those movies look awesome, especially World War Z.

Louise said...

I don't do a ton of book promotions on my blog, mostly because I have a pretty small readership, and most people who would see a book promoted on my blog would have already seen in five other places. But I do tend to post links on Twitter and FB, since I connect with a wider group there, and that seems to work pretty well for me.

I've never been a huge Superman fan, but I have to admit ... I kinda can't wait to see this movie.

Jemi Fraser said...

I promote people too - I do try to read all the books, but life is kind of busy at times, so I don't always get that done in time for the post. Yay for Susan!!!

Optimistic Existentialist said...

Hopefully June's movies are better than May's. With the exception of Star Trek and Ironman, May was a little underwhelming compared to previous years.

Donna K. Weaver said...

Thanks Alex. I'm with you. Reading is so subjective. Just because I don't happen to enjoy someone's story doesn't mean it isn't a great book or that loads of other people won't love it. I support the author.

Juliana Haygert said...

I like supporting other writers, that's why I have so many cover reveals and some guest posts and release day announcements on my blog (no reviews though). Unfortunately, my blog isn't very popular ;)
Like you, I do it because I like helping - I don't expect anything in return.

So many great movies this month! Can't wait!!

Miranda Hardy said...

So many great movies coming out soon (well, I hope they're great). I'm all for promoting my fellow authors and friends. I haven't read everything that is like to, but a helping hand isn't to be looked down upon.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to co-host IWSG this month, some great posts out there and I found some new blogs I hadn't visited before.

Jennie Bennett said...

I want to see Man of Steel so bad! And that story was hilarious Donna! Great job :)

Rusty Carl said...

Superman does look amazing. Top of my June movies to see. WWZ was a great book. Seemed un-adaptable when I read it. I've read about how the first cut was a disaster and they spent mega-millions rewriting and reshooting the third act. I still hope it's good, but the stories make me nervous.

Yolanda Renée said...

I think promoting a book, is promoting the person, unless it's a review - and an honest review. So where's the controversy? Although when I interviewed authors on my blog talk radio show, I got lots of flack for hosting indie writers. Never understood the attitude. But things have changed, I thought.
Maybe this week I'll go to the movies, so many out there I haven't seen!

Lan said...

Promoting each others work is just one of the amazing things that writers do for each other. I'm constantly amazed at how generous writers are. I don't mind promotional stuff at all. In fact, I've found most of my new purchases that way.

Luanne G. Smith said...

Congrats to Donna and Lisa!

And of course I promote other people's books, even though I haven't read them all. It's just a way of saying, "Hey, this book is available. Read the blurb and see if it interests you."

Huntress said...

Congrats to Donna, Susan, Charmaine, Ian and Lisa. A big Hurrah to all.

But much bigger accolades goes to you, Alex, just for being here for us. You are the bulletin board, FB, Twitter/social media, Google/Bing, meetin' and greetin' place for writers. I want to see what is going on, the promotions, and news in the writerly world of ours.

Number three says it all: Friendship. Your heart shines through every word of every post.

Jeremy [Retro] said...

Your top three reasons is what makes you, you... I am proud to be a friend, follower and fan...

Movies! Man of Steel... fingers triple crossed.... WWZ I am hearing mixed reviews, that Pitt is roaming the country to promote it... he was just here... in Chicago.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Laura, really appreciated your help this week!

Louise, that's really smart to post it elsewhere.

Donna, you're welcome, and sorry I was late with it!

Thanks, Yvonne - I aim for something for everyone.

Suzanne, thank YOU!

Rusty, I'm always leery when there are that many changes.

Yolanda, that's cool you had an online radio show.

LG, that's a great way to put it!

Huntress, thank you!!

Jeremy, really appreciate that.

This was probably the best IWSG ever for me. Your news has helped me meet a lot of very wonderful bloggers and participate in events I might never have heard of or found. Then we personally connected, and getting to know you better has been an absolute pleasure.

We need to support each other here. Can't figure why anyone would be negative about that. I don't get paid either, but I sure do enjoy sharing things I discover, read, enjoy, eat, etc. etc. etc. It's about playing in Blog Land and it's really cool!

Madeline Mora-Summonte said...

I want to see MAN OF STEEL and WAR WORLD Z - even though the early reviews for Z haven't been so great. I think I want to see THE PURGE in the theater but I might be too much of a chicken for that. :)

I'm planning on watching DARK SKIES this weekend.

Mark Means said...

I think promotions are a great thing, whether or not you've read the book. It's just another way of spreading the word and there's nothing wrong with that.

I'm really looking forward to 'Man of Steel', but I'm leery of 'World War Z'as the previews look nothing like the book (which I liked a lot).

As for 'White House Down'...I already saw it...it when it was called "Olympus Has Fallen" :)

Unknown said...

Alex, I think it's wonderful that you support so many authors and their fantastic books (like Donna's!).

Julie Flanders said...

Supporting other authors is one of my favorite things about blogging. I had fun doing it before I had a contract and book on the way and would have kept up even if I didn't have my own book to promote. I genuinely enjoy it and find it so exciting when authors have great news to share, it's fun.

Fun post from Donna!

Barring White House Down, i'd like to hit all the other June releases in theaters. Though June is a busy month for me so we'll see if i actually pull it off.

And yeah, that blog post was crazy! I'm with you, though, i promote people because they're my friends. I don't care if they pay me back or not. We're friends, i'm going to support them. I'll probably buy their book, too, even if i don't read it, because the sale will support them as well.
Not everything has to be an eye for an eye, or a shoutout purely for a good product and nothing else

mshatch said...

I promote new authors' books on my blog for the same reasons you do. As for the movie I'm looking forward to: Now You See Me. It looks clever and fun. Have a great weekend!

Tyrean Martinson said...

Promotions are promotions. They can be fun, silly, straight up or have an interesting twist. I think that it's up to each blogger to decide how much they want to promote. I appreciate it a great deal when others have promoted my book.

I go back and forth on whether or not promotions should fit my blog style or not. Sometimes I've read the books and sometimes I haven't . . . it depends on timing, and if it my book budget is stretched.

Usually I'm promoting the person behind the book, and not just the book. Each writer has a gift to share, and I love sharing the person behind the books, as well as the books their gifts have produced.

I haven't started my interview series yet, and I think it will be another month or two, but I'm planning an interview series that I hope will promote bloggers and writers as gifted individuals.

Michael Di Gesu said...

HI, Alex,

As a matter of fact, I really did appreciate this month's IWSG...

I appreciated all the kind words and support given to me and others in my situation. It's tough sometimes when you feel as if your spinning your wheels at high speeds and are going nowhere.

As for promoting other bloggers' books. AHEM. I think you know where I stand. I do as much as I can, and I feature all genres too.

Almost all I have not read, and for my intros it really isn't necessary. HOWEVER, when I do a review, which is rare, I DO READ the book.

We appreciate you always being here for us.... Thanks ALEX!

Unknown said...

Helping out fellow writers promote their books is part of the whole blogging experience for me. I didn't asked anyone to feature my picture book last year. Like you, I don't give to receive.

(Alex and a couple of others, thanks by the way for promoting Little Acorn on your own, just because. Y'all supporting little ole me, meant the world. :D )

As for reading all the books I help promote, I don't read them all. It's almost near impossible to do so. But here's the thing about reading. It's personal. Like one's choice of cake. Some prefer chocolate, some vanilla, others upside-down pineapple. Me? I always go with carrot. But I see nothing wrong with promoting others' books, the same way I'd support them as bakers creating fabulous cake.

Weird analogy, but it works in my head. Is it obvious I skipped breakfast this morning?

Loved the IWSG posts this month. :)

I don't mind promoting books I haven't read--especially in the form of cover reveals. Sometimes cover art is amazing, no matter what the writing is like.

So excited for Man of Steel, World War Z (hope it's better than the book) and Monsters Inc. (the first is my favorite pixar film). I'm a little wary of White House Down. Olympus Has Fallen was amazing and the last couple Roland Emmerich movies have less than wowed me. But I genuinely hope it's great. :D

Yay, Donna! I do promote books I've never read because, like you, I want to support that person.

MAN OF STEEL. Because...Henry Cavil. Yes, please.

By the way, I really liked After Earth and we ended up taking the kids to see it, so I've seen it twice, lol. I also probably brought in half their profit for the movie. Haha.

I participate in cover reveals and blog tours to support my bloggy friends. Yes, it takes up most of my blog but participating in this writing community can be fun and rewarding. If I don't, it feels like I'm not paying my dues to this communitity.

I can't wait to see MAN OF STEEL! Dying to see that film! WHITE HOUSE DOWN reminds me of OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN, but I would see it for the action and eye-candy.

Melissa said...

I didn't see the post in question, so I don't know all the details.

I'll promote books I haven't read to support fellow authors, but I won't review a book I haven't read.

I can't possibly read ALL the books I blog about, but, like you, I like to support the authors. They need to get their work out into the world for readers to find them. Those readers will do their own support by reviewing or passing on the books they loved.

Thanks for posting the upcoming June movies. I was going to have to look them up until you conveniently had them right here. I wanted to know if anything good opened up this weekend. I haven't been to the movies in a couple of weeks.

Congratulations to Susan. It must feel wonderful to be able to retire and pursue the dream of authorship. That's just awesome. I've read one of her books and plan to read more (also reviewed it).

That's how I try to support authors. I try to read their books and support them that way. I know reviews are important.

I think the toughest part of releasing a book is still getting noticed. Any help to let people know what's out there is worthwhile. It's up to them if they want to buy it, but just getting the word out in the sea of Dan Browns is something this community is especially good at.

It's lovely that you are willing to help out your friends and followers with a shout-out. I feel the same way about promotion--in the writing circuit I'm not particularly well known, but in the subject of my nonfiction pretty much everyone knows me and I've selectively used that "power" to support and spread the word on worthy causes. I've never gotten paid for it, nor do I wish to. It's refreshing to see someone who shares my views on that and does what they do simply for the love of the craft and the crowd.

I enjoyed IWSG this month as always. Loved Donna's story. My husband was in the Navy (before we were married) and, although I argue the point, he insists that it's nothing like cruising. I guess he's right.

I am going to sound like a complete dolt when I say this... but it took me until this last reading IWSG to really get what this was. For some reason I had it in my head that people were throwing out their work for critique. I read quite a few posts this last go-round, and they were all about some aspect of the writing process. My bad. Since I am still not actively writing, I don't feel ready to participate in this group, BUT at least I know what it is now. It isn't supporting through critiquing work so much as just supporting. Yeah, I had an "Aha Moment" on Wednesday.

Great movie reviews. I did enjoy the IWSG, although did not visit my normal number of participants. Life is still doing a number on me.

Loved Donna's story! She is awesome.

Support for all friends and fellow authors is super important. I'm so very happy so many wonderful people like you do stuff for our community.

World War Z and Man of Steel will rock for sure!! I'll be first in line LOL

Congratulations and good luck to Donna, Susan, Ian and Lisa.

I can't wait to see Man of Steel! I have high expectations and I really hope Zack doesn't let me down.

You know, I haven't really found the previews for Monster university that funny either, which is disappointing since I thought the original was fantastic. I'll still give it a chance, though without Boo I'm not sure what the point is.

Some interesting books being released, but the movies leave me cold.

I have promised to publish blurb and cover for someone, not books I have read, but just because she is a friend. I expect people to figure out for themselves if they are worth reading.

I'm excited for some of those movies. The Monsters one I agree with you. The previews didn't really make me want to go see it.

Why anyone would object to one another helping another with promotion is beyond me. Writers work hard enough to write a great book, but promotion is another full-time job. If blog visitors don't want to read about an author's work, they're fully capable of skipping over it. I love to help other authors spread the word about their work, and I've been blessed with plenty of generous writers who help me as well.

Carrie Butler said...

1. I'm really excited about Man of Steel. I hope it's better than the Superman movie they tried to push seven years ago.

2. I enjoy promoting my active blogging/writing friends through cover reveals and tour stops. Most of the time, I'm not personally endorsing their work, because I haven't had a chance to read it yet. It's more about helping spread the word. :)

3. Congratulations to Donna, Susan, Ian and Lisa!

I think I am looking forward to ALL those movies!

I will not admit to the white house one, don't want the men in black stalking me. World War Z actually looks interesting, hopefully Superman isn't crap, never liked him much anyway and yeah pixar is turning into what Disney was before Pixar came, a bunch of sequel totting lazy arses who can't make anything good any more. As for promotion, the cat has done it a time or two at his zoo as someone asked me, then stuck some on the side, as long as its not a spammer or someone that comes by and says "nice post" all the time, fine by me. As for ad people I've had quite a few too, but I really don't want to advertise hair products lol but I could be bought if they paid enough, maybe

Roland, be good for a laugh!

TS, good to know it's not just me.

Patricia, me neither.

Cate, well put.

Carrie, hard to do with a book that's just come out, right?

Congrats to those with new books! And especially to Donna - fun story.

I promote authors I know on my blog, on my FB page, and on Twitter. But the writers have to let me know - especially if they want a cover reveal or launch day post on my blog. Otherwise, all they'll get is a tweet and a FB share. IF I see their posts there. I'm not clairvoyant.

M Pax said...

Congrats to Lisa and Ian!!

This may be weird, but I feel bad if I miss someone's book release/promotion. Seriously. I want to help. I'd not have my scraggly toehold without all the help I've gotten, so I want to do it, want to help others. I don't care if it fits my theme. We're all in this together.

We'll be going to see the Man of Steel. Movies two months in a row at the theater... unusual for us. Husband Unit likes that 3D now.

The main reason for me to even have a blog is to have a spot where I can boast about my friends' accomplishments. And so I mostly do that - cover reveals, new release announcements, authors' giveaways etc. There is only a bit about me and my books, and most of my posts are dedicated to my author friends. This is what truly makes me happy - I am a part of this amazing writing community and paying forward is what I do :-)

Congrats to Donna on her new release and to Susan on her retirement and starting to write full time! All true best to both of you!

~Sia McKye~ said...

I'm bad about forgetting the IWSG. I did an article last month, clear a spot for this month and forgot it. sigh.

Congrats Donna, Susan, and Ian!

I do try to support authors. That was one of the reasons I started my blog. I was doing guest spotlights before many bloggers were. Now they're everywhere, lol! But I do have a blog theme so things have work within those boundaries.

I'm not doing reviews right now (or let me put it this way, I'm doing very few--just burnt out on them), but that another way I've supported in the past. I have featured some books I've enjoyed reading on the blog occasionally. Hot reads sort of things.

I know a lot of traditionally pubbed authors, many are part of my writing group (I've been with them since '07) I feature them and both traditional and indie pubbed.

I don't mind being asked about guest spots. If I have a spot open, there you go.

A lot of this blogging community write YA and I don't read that many and it's not my first choice in reading material. But I've made it a point to increase my intake in support of those who do.

As far as cover reveal or an announcements I like to have an article to go with it. Something that shows a bit about the author--their journey, writing day, hobbies, things they've overcome. I like to read about more than just THE BOOK.

I've never done author promotion with the idea of tit for tat. I do it because I know how hard writers work. I want to help.

I read a few IWSG posts and thought they all offered solid, encouraging advice. As for promotions, I don't mind doing a post for someone. An announcement if I haven't read it yet, or a review if I have.

As for movies, the hubby is waiting for MoS. Me? I could go see Star Trek again. And again.

I like to help promote other writers, irrespective of genre, by cover reveals, announcements, release dates etc.
When time permits, I also like to help by posting a review of books written by authors within the online community (on Goodreads)
It's a great way to give back to the community.

Wow, that line-up of new movies looks good. My sister Liz says that Brad Pitt has never made a bad movie - plus she loves zombies.

I promote, but I do it when it fits around my world. Sometimes I will promote more or less based on what is going on, but there is nothing in return for me. Captain you are the only one that has mentioned me published-thank you!

Sorry I am late! Graduation today and lots going on. My daughter won't graduate till next year. I am photographer-so that means busy! I did a few close friends and one paid gig.

World War Z-hubby is excited about this one! I know it will be raining popcorn. I will scream and toss ;D Happy weekend to you n' Mrs. Cool

I love the way you support authors, Alex, and so many good books are mentioned on your blog that my to-read list is getting very long.

Just FYI, the current issue of Vanity Fair has a big article on the making of World War Z. I'll probably see it, The End sounds funny.

I'm more than happy to promote fellow authors books. I won't pretend I've read it if I haven't (I have a whole unable to lie thing - I break out in a sweat just thinking about telling fibs!), but I'll try to read as much as possible in the time granted and I'll always be able to find something positive to say.

On Goodreads I worry I might be a bit brutal, but I'll only review Indie books if I like them and I figure I can be honest about big selling mainstream books from the big publishers because it won't really hurt them. Mind you, most books I enjoy :)

And thanks so much for mentioning the giveaway Alex! I'm very excited to see who wins the Kindle Fire!

I also hope the next Superman movie is great and I am looking forward to seeing World War Z!

I'm all for promoting other authors. Even if I haven't read the book. I've been trying to take a page from your book, so to speak, and letting people know about new releases and some freebies. About 90% of my time on Twitter is spent retweeting other authors news.

Vanessa Morgan said...

How could I not like this month's ISWG :)

Have a lovely weekend!

Mel, that's really nice of you.

I'm very selective when it comes to advertising others' work. Like you, I do it because the person means a lot to me. Occasionally, I get asked to advertise for others for free or for products. I've declined, though I'd have to think twice if real money were offered.

Be well, Alex.

Looking forward to World War Z! Since my blog is devoted to fiction, I didn't want to "clutter it up" with cover reveals and promos. I compromised by setting up a separate page on the blog with featured authors/books. And I do try and add 1 or 2 authors which might be new to our usual circle.

Well, swab the poopdeck, that was hilarious, Donna :)

Yes, the IWSG, was great. I should know what a success it is by all the blogs on my blog list suddenly having the IWSG logo show up.

Although I admire your altruism, personally, I'd like to see you feature yourself a bit more on your own blog site. With so many links, I feel bad that I can't possibly find the time to check them all out.

Maybe a few less links and a bit more about yourself? Just a thought.

A good weekend to you and the rest of your friends on here.

Great little anecdote there, Donna! Isn't it awesome how so much of our own lives make their way into our stories?

Alex, I think you make a great point about promoting books that fall in line with the theme of your blog. You can still promote a book without necessarily having read it, as long as you don't rate or review it by saying it's wonderful and so forth (that becomes misleading). I do this often for blog friends whose work I have yet to read, mainly for Reasons 2 & 3. :)

Also, I cannot wait for Man of Steel! I'm STOKED for this movie!

I love the idea of promoting one another around the ol' sphere, whether it's a 'you scratch my back I'll scratch yours,' or just a favor, or (especially) when the promoter genuinely loves and believes in the book in question.

I'm stoked about World War Z - I'm a zombie nerd - and This is The End - those fellers rarely disappoint. Only semi-stoked about Man o' Steel. Superhero movies rarely change my life. the Dark Knight is the only superhero movie that is amongst my top ten... or even top 50 probably.

Georgina Morales said...

I do some promoting, too. I like to help other writers as much as I can, and I tend to do it by social media and posting my reviews in every space that will take them. With the blog, though, I'm still fighting to find a voice related to my writing that will help me connect with my readers, so I post the reviews there, too.

About the movies, is it sad that I'm excited about Monsters Inc.? World war Z will be a ride, I'm sure, I just don't know if it'll left me satisfied as the adaptation of a book I thoroughly enjoyed. Will see. But I'll be on the theater for sure.
