Retro A to Z Challenge: A – Apollo 11 Landing 1969

Co-Host, Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh, welcomes you to the fifth annual A to Z Challenge!

Apollo 11 - 1969

The Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20, 1969 was one of the most monumental points in our history. Man had finally made the journey and set foot on another surface. “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” And yes, I remember seeing it happen on television. (Anyone else want to admit that?)

1969 fun facts –
*Cost of average house - $15,500. / UK - 4,640. pounds sterling
*Woodstock took place on a New York farm from August 15-17
*The first ATM in the USA was introduced
*The Airplanet was created, predecessor of the Internet
*Monty Python’s Flying Circus debuts
*The Beatles give their last public performance
*The NFL turned fifty

Movies released –
True Grit
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Easy Rider

Music released –
Beatles – Yellow Submarine

Why is 1969 special?

Because Old Kitty was born that year and in the same month men walked on the moon!

Kitty is the most positive and energetic soul you will find online. She always has a cheery word and is usually responsible for my first laugh of the day. She posts at Ten Lives and Second Chances, featuring photos of her two cats, Charlie and Gumtree.

Movie Review

Muppets Most Wanted
Even more fun than the last one, the film puts the gang on the road in Europe and part of a international heist. It pokes fun at itself and other pop culture references. There’s an incredible cast of cameos and stars, including Tom Hiddleston, James McAvoy, and Ray Liotta. If you grew up with The Muppet Show, you’ll find a lot to enjoy.

What do you remember from 1969? Have you met Old Kitty? Excited about the new books? Seen the new Muppet movie? And are you ready to rock the A to Z Challenge?

Insecure Writer’s Support Group and CassaStorm Book Trailer!!!! Plus Ninja News, Wednesday Movie Quote, and Special Announcement.

It’s time for another group posting of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! Time to release our fears to the world – or offer encouragement to those who are feeling neurotic. If you’d like to join us, click on the tab above and sign up. We post the first Wednesday of every month. I encourage everyone to visit at least a dozen new blogs and leave a comment. Your words might be the encouragement someone needs.

My awesome co-hosts today are Nancy Thompson, Mark Koopmans, and Heather Gardner! Please be sure to thank them for their time and effort to make all IWSG members feel welcome.

This month I am finishing final edits on CassaStorm. I’ve already seen a few of the reviews for my third book. (He shoots – he scores!) My tour is set and my publisher notified me of some major promotions they will be doing for its release.

My insecurity right now has to do with how well this last book will do and where the other two are right now. Sales have slowed this year for CassaStar and CassaFire. Which I can’t complain about, because when they were at the top of the charts, they were moving big time. But I’m concerned that slower sales now for the first two will hurt CassaStorm.

Like most writers, I think I improved, and the third one is the best of the trilogy. I think with a younger character like Byron’s son it will have an even wider appeal. But will enough people find it? It could be my last book – I’d really like to send it out with a bang.

Anyone else looking at the final book in their series the same way?

Visit others on the IWSG LIST!

June Movie Preview, Supporting Other Authors, A Change of Plans, IWSG Wrap-up, and Ninja News

Special guest today - Donna K. Weaver, author of the new release, A Change of Plans!

Alex said I needed to be humorous, so I decided to share a personal experience that inspired a scene on the ship. My father was career Navy, and we traveled by ship to and from some of his duty assignments.

On our way to the Philippines, the waters outside of San Francisco were really rough--plus it was the beginning of 21-day trip. I didn't have my sea legs yet (when your inner ear gets used to the movement). I don't get seasick, but it's still a crazy sensation when the ground is constantly swaying underneath you. You tend to stumble a lot. This ship was a military transport and nothing compared to modern cruise ships.

I remember clinging to the railing as I came down the stairs, staggering into the lounge, and collapsing on to a couch. I didn't really want to get up again right away, so I raised my bump up off the couch to reach for a magazine. The steward, who was vacuuming behind me, thought I was getting up for good and took the chance to move the chair to clean under it.

Um, yeah. I straightened, the ship rocked, and I tried to collapse on the couch again . The couch that wasn't there anymore. Unfortunately, there wasn't an attractive guy behind me with a convenient lap for me to fall into.

Congratulations, Donna – I thought it was funny.

IWSG Wrap-up

A Question of Support

A friend’s post this week regarding supporting authors received quite the firestorm of comments. (And a really cool cat drawing, which had nothing to do with the post, but it was clever!) It had to do with promoting books through reviews, cover reveals, and release announcements – and do you promote a book you haven’t read?

Here’s my thoughts – that’s up to the individual. And whether it fits the blog or not. (Because some have a theme and it just doesn’t fit.)

Obviously I do post announcements and covers. And here’s why:

1 – The Ninja News
Everyone tells me they come here to get caught up on releases and what’s happening around the blogging world. I’m just reporting the news. And I’m happy to announce anything cool happening with my followers.

2 – The Ninja Army
Once I crossed a thousand followers, I realized I could be really effective at spreading the word for my friends. This blog became a little less about me and more about you guys.

3 – Friendship
When I post about a release or announcement, I’m endorsing the person. I’m doing it because I believe in YOU.

I do it without expecting something in return. I don’t get paid. (Despite the fact I’m bombarded with ad companies and could make money that way. That’s just not how I roll.) I don’t do it just so you will support my books. If you never buy one or post about my books, I’m cool with that. I don’t give to get. I give for all those reasons above.

Where do you fall with promotions? Please no firestorm. (Violators will receive a visit from one or more clones who will proceed to paint your blog a funny color.)

Secondary Characters Blogfest

Hosted by Rachel Schieffelbein and (several co-hosts) in celebration of her upcoming book, Secondary Characters. (Available May 28.)

I had several ideas for great secondary characters, including Lt. D’Agosta from Preston and Child’s Agent Pendergast series. But I decided to go with the best secondary characters ever created:

The cast of Serenity/Firefly!

The cast revolves around Mal. The show is all about him, his ship, his past, and the side he chose during the war. And what a great bunch of secondary characters:
Zoe – Second in command and a devoted, level-headed fighter.
Wash – Skilled pilot and comic relief.
Inara – Companion and romantic tension.
Kaylee – Mechanic and the sweet soul of the crew.
Jayne – Hired gun who is blunt and looking out for number one.
Simon – Skilled doctor and overprotective brother of River.
River – Child prodigy and just a bit unstable.
Book – Shepherd and the moral compass of the crew.
Throw them all together with a captain who aims to misbehave and you have one heck of a show!
And one more time for the record – curse you, FOX!

Excited about all the cool book news? Ready for the Get Healthy Blogfest? (Or in desperate need?) What’s your favorite sports movie quote? Know any of the directors? And who is your favorite secondary character?

I have something really cool planned for Friday!

Cherie Reich and Horror Movies, Ninja News, Movie Trivia Answers, and a Personal Note

Today I have the honor of hosting Cherie Reich on her tour for The Nightmare Collection!

What I’ve Learned from Horror Movies

Thank you so much for hosting me today, Alex! Wow, being on THE Ninja Captain’s blog is so cool.

I believe we can learn a lot from horror movies and book, and I have created a list of my top five things (in no particular order) I’ve learned from them that also helped me create my horror story collection, The Nightmare Collection.

1. Never split up.
Power is in numbers, so if you split up, you’re likely to be the first to die.

2. Phones are evil.
They either don’t work when you need to contact the authorities and get help or it is the killer calling you. Just stay away from the phone and run for it.

3. Never look back.
Have you noticed in horror movies that no matter how slow the monster comes at you, it will still get you? I think that’s because people keep looking back. They then trip and fall, and it gives the monster time to catch up. Don’t look back. Keep running!

4. The best way to kill most monsters is to chop their head off.
Enough said. Just be sure you chop the right guy’s head off.

5. Don’t live in small towns, the forests, or near cornfields.
Monsters—and aliens—love to hide in rural areas. It’s just not safe.

And a special tip I’ve learned from a real life experiences ... Don’t laugh at guys with chainsaws! Seriously. Don’t! It pisses them off, and then they run after you, even if you’re an eight-year-old girl at a haunted cave.

What have you learned from horror movies/books?

Thanks, Cherie! I’ve learned always use the double-tap.

Find the awesome Cherie at her BLOG
You can order the paperback or eBook of The Nightmare Collection on Amazon or enter the giveaway on Goodreads.

Congratulations, Cherie – really looking forward to this one!
