All of us are doing “Getting to Know Your Hosts” posts at the A to Z Blog, and today I’m up! Ten questions – at least nine ridiculous answers.

Today I have the honor of hosting Ellie Garratt on the launch day for her book!

Passing Time With Music

I'm on Alex Cavanaugh’s blog, and my first eBook short story collection is published today. Can my day get any better?

Like Alex, I love music. I have an eclectic taste, ranging from pop music to film scores. Every story I write usually has a song or soundtrack providing that added thump of inspiration, and some of my stories have even been inspired by music. Passing Time, the title story from my first dark fiction story collection is no different.

On the day Lily Childs asked me to contribute to the 2011 February Femme Fatales, I'd been listening to David Bowie's final Ziggy Stardust concert. The lyrics from one track in particular have always captivated me - My Death. Ironically not written by Bowie, My Death is a hauntingly poetic song, in which the narrator contemplates death and the passing of time. Here are the opening three lines:

My death waits like an old roué
so confident I'll go his way
whistle to him and the passing time...

You may think the subject of the song is morbid. But as the famous saying goes, there are no certainties in life but death and taxes, which got me to thinking - what if death wasn't the certainty you or I believed? What if death meant passing time neither you nor I knew about? And so my short story Passing Time came to be, and nearly two years later it provided the title story for my first eBook collection.

Movie Reviews!

Oz the Great and Powerful
This movie is a prequel to Wizard of Oz and establishes the Wizard’s place in Oz. The film is visually stunning. Almost too much. Every scene is lush, which loses its zing after a bit. Plus I saw it in 3D, and there was a lot popping out of the screen.
Parts of it felt flat and lacking in heart. Probably could’ve shaved fifteen minutes for a tighter film.
However, when it does shine, it soars. The ending is spectacular. And the secondary characters are outstanding. The monkey Finley was quite amusing and the China Doll added a very emotional touch to the movie.
This one just missed the mark for me, but I’m still glad I went to see it.

Wreck it Ralph
Since this one was so highly reviewed, I took a leap of faith and purchased it on DVD. And glad I did!
Wreck it Ralph is having a hard time dealing with the fact he’s the bad guy in his game and sets off to win a medal and prove he’s not.
This movie is about as nostalgic as they come. Anyone who spent hours playing arcade games in the 80’s will feel right at home. The animation is fun and they really bring the sometimes pixelated characters to life. The story has a good heart and it’s fun for the whole family.
Ever wondered what happens when they shut down the arcade? Then this is the adventure for you!

IWSG Thoughts and Call for Help

Posts for the Insecure Writer’s Support Group were awesome this week! I so wish I could visit everyone, but the group is three hundred plus strong now. Even with clones, I can’t manage to visit everyone. Special thanks to Misha Gericke and Joylene Nowell Butler for their help as co-hosts.

The IWSG is on for April during the Challenge! If you can’t post, that’s fine. But we’ve never missed a month and some members aren’t participating in the Challenge. So April 3 is our next post date.

Co-hosts! I still have a list of volunteers to co-host, but I want to throw April open. I know it will be busy with the A to Z Challenge. If you can help co-host next month, please let me know. It involves visiting twenty to twenty-five blogs and I need two helpers. If you can do that, just leave a comment. Thanks!

Thanks to those who responded to my IWSG insecurity. (This comment in particular made me laugh: “I think you could post the phone book and you'd still get 1000 comments.” - Maurice Mitchell) From now on, more Ninja as requested! However, I will continue with the Ninja News and with announcements. Just smaller.

I want to extend a special thanks to four special ladies. Many of you have been with the IWSG for a long time, only missing a post or two. Free Books on Amazon – Good or Bad?

Some authors and publishers offer select books for free on Amazon. Is this a good or bad thing?

I’ve heard some say it devalues the work. (I can certainly understand that since I know how much effort goes into writing a book.) And that a high ranking due to free downloads doesn’t mean anything and can lead to a lot of bad reviews.

I’ve heard the opposing view that offering one book for free entices readers to buy other books by the author, thus spurring sales. I can understand that as well.

And there are all sorts of things to consider in between – authors with only one book, allowing only Amazon to offer the book, etc.

So what do you guys think? Is free good or bad? Or does it depend?

Insecure Writer’s Support Group, Ninja News, Movie Reviews, and the Wednesday Movie Quote

It’s time for another group posting of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! Time to release our fears to the world – or offer encouragement to those who are feeling neurotic. This month I have an odd writing insecurity.

In a recent post by Roland Yeomans, he wondered if blogging was becoming less effective with so many cover reveals, book announcements, etc. (I admit, there does seem to be a lot of them lately.) But I started thinking and I realized I really don’t write much for my own blog anymore.

Now, I enjoy shouting out my blogger buddies’ accomplishments! That won’t ever change. The Ninja News is never going away. I enjoy keeping up with the blogging world. But I would like to write something here now and then. I haven’t even done a movie review in months. (Which is why you are getting two today!)

If I shrink some of the announcements down a bit, would that be all right? I’ll still post, just… shorter.

Jack the Giant Slayer
Yes, it’s a retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk.
And you know what? It was fun.
Some of the reviewers have been harsh, but I didn’t find anything wrong with the movie. It’s not the most memorable thing you’ll ever see, but it’s not cheesy or bad.
The special effects and acting were all great. (Saw it in 3D,) Story even had a few unexpected twists and some good laughs.
Go and enjoy!

Premium Rush
It’s a thriller involving a Manhattan bicycle delivery guy. How thrilling could it really be?
Turns out, it was really damn good! Toss in a crooked cop, a roommate with a secret, and competition among the bikers and it’s a heck of a ride. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the lead, and he takes you on a wild chase through the city – all without brakes!
Definitely recommend it!

Bonus Review!
House of Cards
For those of you with NetFlix, have you been watching their original series, House of Cards? It’s political drama with one heck of a cast, including Kevin Spacey. The show takes no sides – everyone is motivated by money and re-election without a care about the country. (Slimy politicians? Really?)
It’s a watch now and highly recommended!

My dear friend and awesome fellow follower of Christ, author Tyrean Martinson, is here today to talk about true champions.

Before I begin, I have to say that I am beyond honored to be here at the no-hyper-link-needed Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh’s blog. Wow! Thank you, Alex!

My novel, Champion in the Darkness is set in the world of Aramatir. It’s a world in which only one Champion exists at a time. Each Champion upholds the highest values of faith, strength, loyalty, honor, and sacrifice. There are other legendary Sword Masters, Law-Givers, and Shepherds, but Champions have a special status in the world of Aramatir as the best of the best. Clara, my young MC is ready to be a Sword Master, and she’s dreamed of making legendary status, but Champion? She doesn’t know if she’s ready for that huge task.

In our world, each of us can be a Champion. Many of us have personal Champions: parents, grandparents, coaches, teachers, friends, and others who inspire us. Today I would like to honor one Champion I know in the blogworld: Nick Wilford. Nick is a Champion for his stepson, and has put together a number of giving opportunities to help his stepson get to a specialist college, including the Overcoming Adversity Anthology.
