Tyrean Martinson and Champions, Overcoming Adversity with Nick Wilford, Ninja News, Amazon and Authors, and Boomtown Craze

Champions

My dear friend and awesome fellow follower of Christ, author Tyrean Martinson, is here today to talk about true champions.

Before I begin, I have to say that I am beyond honored to be here at the no-hyper-link-needed Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh’s blog. Wow! Thank you, Alex!

My novel, Champion in the Darkness is set in the world of Aramatir. It’s a world in which only one Champion exists at a time. Each Champion upholds the highest values of faith, strength, loyalty, honor, and sacrifice. There are other legendary Sword Masters, Law-Givers, and Shepherds, but Champions have a special status in the world of Aramatir as the best of the best. Clara, my young MC is ready to be a Sword Master, and she’s dreamed of making legendary status, but Champion? She doesn’t know if she’s ready for that huge task.

In our world, each of us can be a Champion. Many of us have personal Champions: parents, grandparents, coaches, teachers, friends, and others who inspire us. Today I would like to honor one Champion I know in the blogworld: Nick Wilford. Nick is a Champion for his stepson, and has put together a number of giving opportunities to help his stepson get to a specialist college, including the Overcoming Adversity Anthology. If you don’t know Nick, go meet him. He’s a Champion that upholds the highest values and puts them into action.

Who, in your life, is your Champion?

Champion in the Darkness is YA Christian Fantasy, and is the first book in the Champion Trilogy.

Tyrean Martinson lives and writes in the Northwest, encouraged by her loving husband and daughters, and reminded to exercise by her dogs and cat. Champion in the Darkness is the first book in the Champion Trilogy, and she has previously published short stories and poetry.

Champion in the Darkness can be found at these links: Amazon, Nook, Kobo, and Goodreads.

Tyrean Martinson can be found at these links: Blog, Twitter, and Facebook.

Overcoming Adversity – A True Champion

Overcoming Adversity: An Anthology for Andrew edited by Nick Wilford

A collection of seventy moving and uplifting original pieces - real life, flash fiction, and poetry - about battling against the odds and the ultimate triumph of the human spirit. The contributors include Amazon bestselling authors Alex J. Cavanaugh and Kyra Lennon, and the cream of upcoming talent.

The anthology is part of a fundraising effort to send the editor's stepson, Andrew McNaughton, to a specialist college in England. Andrew has cerebral palsy, and is a remarkable young man with a promising future. However, the free further education options offered in his own country of Scotland will not challenge him and allow him to progress. In order to access the education he deserves, Andrew will have to pay exorbitant fees, thus creating a situation of discrimination.

Help us get Andrew to college by buying a book that runs the full gamut of human emotions, ultimately leaving you inspired and glad to be alive. Whatever struggles you are going through, our sincere hope is that this book will help.

Purchase Links: Amazon UK, Amazon US, Smashwords, and Goodreads.

Nick Wilford is a writer and stay-at-home dad. Once a journalist, he now makes use of those rare times when the house is quiet to explore the realms of fiction. When not writing he can usually be found spending time with his family or cleaning something. He has four short stories published in Writer’s Muse magazine. Nick is also co-running a campaign to get a dedicated specialist college built in Scotland.

Indie Authors, Free Books, and Amazon

I caught a couple interesting articles regarding changes in Amazon’s Affiliation Program and how they will affect authors trying to promote free books. The first was at To Become A Writer - Bad News if You Use Amazon Select. The second one was at Failure Ahoy! Adventures in Digital Publishing - Amazon is About to Throttle Free Books. Since many of you are indie authors, I thought I would pass this along to you.

I think the Amazon changes are great. It's about time people got back into the habit of PAYING for their books :-)Let the publishers/authors decide who to give free books to. People who will APPRECIATE them, not just download 'just coz it's free'. Somebody shoot me for my opinion, I know sb will :-)

Sheena-kay Graham said...

Yes I'm a big fan of Jess and will take part in the blogfest. Amazon is about Amazon, simple as that. M. Paz series sounds great. Got the free book one this morning and will decide whether to buy others after reading it. Love book 3's cover. Glad Nick launched the anthology and best of luck to Andrew.

Wow I've never been this high in comments before.

I agree that Nick is a champion, and I'm so excited about Overcoming Adversity! Congrats to M Pax too!

Hi Alex .. Nick has done wonders and I love the cover he was able to conjure up with the major help of two wonderful ladies. I certainly hope a large number of funds are raised for Andrew ...

Interesting to read Jess' comment and congratulations to all the authors ..

Congrats to Tyrean. Her book sounds great. And interesting on the Amazon changes. They don't affect me for now.

Good luck to Nick and the Overcoming Adversity Anthology, I hope it goes well.

Congrats for Book 3 Mary!

I have always been a little wary of Amazon, they are a power hungry conglomerate, but unfortunately we need them.

Melissa said...

Wow! Lots of awesome news! :D

Yes, I have a copy of Nick's book, and I'm spreadin' the word. ;)

Elise Fallson said...

Great folks highlighted today! And best of luck to Andrew! (:

Nick Wilford said...

Thanks Alex! Andrew is my champion. He's a positive force who just soldiers on despite the obstacles.

Great post from Tyrean and congrats to Mary!

Ciara said...

Wow, so much going on right now. I love the idea of a YA Christian fantasy. LOVE M. Pax's new cover!! I tend to only do free downloads on short works of fiction, but not sure I'll do too much of that in the future. I'm not sure I want to see jack the Giant Slayer, but maybe I'll change my mind after your review.

Elsie Amata said...

I'm so excited about Nick's book!! I am hopeful he meets his goals and have been praying!

As a side note, it's the first time I've been published and that just makes me jump for joy!

I understand why Amazon is going the direction they are going but I'm not sure I agree with it because being able to distribute free books to family and friends is a great way to help sample your product.

To answer Tyrean's question - my champion's are my kids. They rock.

Jessica Bell said...

Elsie, you can easily distribute your books to family and friends without Amazon. If they want mobi files, all you have to do is download it from your publishing page :)

I'm in favor of Amazon making free go away. I never quite comfortable with it as a marketing strategy. With it off the table then I feel like we can all move forward.

Looking forward to that review.

What a fantastic anthology and cause!

Congratulations to all with new releases!

Thanks for sharing the posts on Amazon's changes. They do like to change things up there from time to time.

So much news today! I also read about Amazon's changes on another blog ... They certainly don't like to keep things the same for too long! Congratulations to all the great ninjas mentioned here today :-)

A.J. Walker said...

The Overcoming Adversity Anthology is on my to-buy list for my next Amazon purchase. I tend to buy a chunk of books at a time, read through them, and buy another chunk. It's about that time again!

Julie Flanders said...

What a great post by Tyrean! And I didn't realize Nick's book was already available, heading over to get a copy now. Congrats to Mary, already seeing her everywhere today. :)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Jessica, that makes sense to me. I won't shoot you.

Sheena-kay, you got up early.

Natalie, they don't affect me, but I'm sure they will affect a lot of other authors.

Nick, happy to help spread the word!

Ciara, it was a fun movie.

Elsie, that's very cool - congratulations to you.

Sheri, it's everywhere today.

Elizabeth, they keep everyone on their toes.

AJ, Nick will be excited to hear that.

So many heroes I've met, it's difficult to name one. Besides you already know my favorite.

My best to Nick and M.Pax, and of course Tyrean.

Luanne G. Smith said...

Congratulations all around!

And I have to say I'm kind of glad Amazon is throttling the free books. I hate seeing authors give away their work for free. I'd rather see an author selling a book for .99 cents than see it as a free giveaway.

farawayeyes said...

Some amazing info, books and authors mentioned today.

Best of luck to Nick for the work he's doing.

Yes sir, I want to hear what you have to say about Jack.

Unknown said...

Great to see Nick and Tyrean's books out. All the best to Nick with the sales-- what a fantastic reason for a book.

Theresa Milstein said...

I'm off to visit Lydia's blog.

My husband is my champion.

Cindy said...

I think Amazon is doing the right thing with the changes. There were just too many free books and no reason for readers to buy. However, I do find free works if you a sequel. In any case, I don't feel hindered by this because I can still set the first book to .99 cents which is close enough to free. Kindle select has still been an advantage to me because I get a lot of borrows and I'm paid for them.

Maybe I'm interpreting it wrong, but it doesn't look like free books are being axed. Just not promoted by affiliate sites. Which is fine by me. As for the whole free thing, I'm fine with it. We put our ebooks up for free every once in a while, which helps get some more readers and afterwards, always drives sales up even higher. Everyone wins.

Joylene Nowell Butler said...

You know the most outstanding authors, Alex. Tyrean's book sounds awesome. I'm going to check out Nick's book, and I can't wait to hear what you thought of Jack and his bean stalk. As for Amazon, they and I have never been close, so I'm not really affected by what's happening over there. I probably should, but frankly, my dear, I don't give a hoot. They have one of my novels priced at over one hundred dollars and say there's nothing they can do about it because its a second-hand seller.

Champions, yes, I have a few. But I'm not allowed to mention my sons online. They're shy. They're also worried that mum might embarrass them. Go figure.

Excellent post today, Alex. Not unlike all your posts!

Mark Means said...

I had heard the thing about Amazon and free books the other day but still need to check it out. Thanks for the link!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Huntress, I know!! Working on that.

Misha, must be because the sections are bite-sized.

Brandon and Bryan, that's how I interpreted it - just fewer places to list free books.

Hildie, it was a fun movie!

Robin, you probably won't find that out through my Challenge posts! You'll see.

Patricia, just so much happening.

Joylene, wow! That's one expensive book.

I don't think Amazon is targeting indie authors. They're trying to keep from paying people to give stuff away from their site, which makes sense. Basically, what they're saying is "make some money for us (by promoting books that cost money) or we're gonna quit paying you." I can't really argue with that, especially since a lot of these sites are taking money -from- authors to promote their free books -and- getting paid by Amazon to give those books away. That's just wrong any way you look at it.

mooderino said...

I'm not really sure if what Amazon is doing is good or bad, but I'd feel a lot better if they had some sort of competition. Having the world market to themselves can't be a good thing.

Picked up my copy of "Overcoming Adversity: An Anthology for Andrew" today.

And a big congrats to all the others! As usual, so much information!

I don't mind if Amazon gets rid of free books. Then authors won't have to make their books only available through Kindle. I prefer my Kobo app over my Kindle app on my iPod Touch. It's not like I download free books very often. And when I do, I never get around to reading them.

Tyrean Martinson said...

Jeff - I'm thankful to have known a few too!

Stina - it's interesting because I haven't ever offered anything for free (yet) so it doesn't feel like it affects me much, except for as a reader.

Okay, barely awake and yet, even at this unearthly hour, I shall grace you with one of my highly collectable comments. And to help keep me awake, I'm listening to "Digimortal".

I think you may realise that a book such as "Overcoming Adversity" and the cause behind it, is clear demonstration of humanity at its best and most profound.

Although I think you posts are too long, I do understand it's because you want to bring awareness of so many. And I shall not make any mention of the alphabet challenge :)

Be well,

Gary

Got Nick's book and will be on it as my next read. It will be kind of weird reading my own stuff in there. Good cause.

Thanks for the links about the posts on Amazon's big news. Will be interesting to see what they have to say...been reading other thoughts and posts since the announcement. Of course I'm looking forward to A-Z and not for shorter post, but because it should be fun to see what everyone comes up with! :)

Congrats to Nick and best to Andrew.

Thanks, Wanda.

What a great post-- thanks, Tyrean and Alex. Champions are so amazing, and I've been hearing about Nick's book all over the place!

Right now, my favorite champion is my friend Chad Morris, who is being a champion for his daughter who had a brain tumor. His book releases tomorrow, and I love seeing the online writing community become Chad's champion by spreading the word about his book when he can't!

I agree, I don't understand writing a book and then giving it away free. Not being a writer, I feel if I were, I would want to make a buck or two from my book as well as get it out there. Of course if there are sequels, readers will often buy them so you get some reward for your work.

Doesn't Britain have free education any more? Or is it because its a specialist school?

I love Mary's new cover! And she sure is cranking them out. Amazon continues to change the game, and we as authors have to continue to adapt. Also congrats to Nick for getting his anthology out.

Looking forward to seeing what you think of Jack! I'm in two minds about it so it'll be good to see what you think before I part with my cash :)

Boomtown Craze sounds interesting. I did not take long to find out that it is the third book in a series.

I wish I would have more time for reading ...

I look forward to read your thoughts about Jack the Giant Slayer.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Shallee, I read about Chad! Very sad, but great so many are helping.

Jo, there is no specialist college in Scotland for Andrew, so they have to send him to England, and it costs a lot of money.

Jamie, one of your minds will probably enjoy it!

Anne, good luck!

So many of my favorite authors and bloggers featured in this post. From Nick, to TDR, to Tyrean--just great folks.

The Zon is about making $$$ for the Zon. Indies will have to be creative--as they've always had to be--and learn how to make the new system work for them.

The Overcoming Adversity book sounds great. And we certainly need more champions in our world. I always think of the good work that teachers do in the world. They help shape kids and teens, and adults too, and encourage them to be all they can be. Mostly teachers get paid way too little for what they do. Huzzah to all of the awesome teachers!

I wouldn't worry too much. I think Amazon is getting afraid of the Indie takeover. The world is destined to change no matter who tries to thwart its efforts.

Hi Alex,
Thanks for commenting on my post for ther upcoming A to Z in April challenge. But I suspect that you may have had trouble finding my post for IWSG. I'm new, and it is my first post. But I got several interesting comments so I am determined to keep coming back every month.

Please don't remove my name.
