My two awesome co-hosts this month are Misha Gericke and Joylene Nowell Butler! Please be sure to thank them for their time and effort to make all IWSG members feel welcome.
This month I have an odd writing insecurity.
In a recent post by Roland Yeomans, he wondered if blogging was becoming less effective with so many cover reveals, book announcements, etc. (I admit, there does seem to be a lot of them lately.) But I started thinking and I realized I really don’t write much for my own blog anymore.
Now, I enjoy shouting out my blogger buddies’ accomplishments! That won’t ever change. The Ninja News is never going away. I enjoy keeping up with the blogging world. But I would like to write something here now and then. I haven’t even done a movie review in months. (Which is why you are getting two today!)
If I shrink some of the announcements down a bit, would that be all right? I’ll still post, just… shorter.
Be sure to visit other participants of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group!
And, since I do cull the list now and then, make sure you are still on the list if you are posting now.

The Happy Whisk is hosting a giveaway for hitting 444 posts! Some awesome books (including one of mine) so check it out.
I can’t remember how I found this site - Christian Fiction for Your Kindle. It lists both fiction and non-fiction Christian books that are on sale or free that day.
FRAILTIES OF THE BOND by Angela Brown
In Frailties of the Bond, it only takes one bite to change a life…
FRAILTIES OF THE BOND is the first in a series of novellas and short stories introducing heroes and heroines of the secret organization, NEO – Network of Extraordinaires and Otherwordlies.

Movie Reviews!
Jack the Giant Slayer
Yes, it’s a retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk.
And you know what? It was fun.
Some of the reviewers have been harsh, but I didn’t find anything wrong with the movie. It’s not the most memorable thing you’ll ever see, but it’s not cheesy or bad.
The special effects and acting were all great. (Saw it in 3D,) Story even had a few unexpected twists and some good laughs.
Go and enjoy!
Premium Rush
It’s a thriller involving a Manhattan bicycle delivery guy. How thrilling could it really be?
Turns out, it was really damn good! Toss in a crooked cop, a roommate with a secret, and competition among the bikers and it’s a heck of a ride. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the lead, and he takes you on a wild chase through the city – all without brakes!
Definitely recommend it!
Bonus Review!
House of Cards
For those of you with NetFlix, have you been watching their original series, House of Cards? It’s political drama with one heck of a cast, including Kevin Spacey. The show takes no sides – everyone is motivated by money and re-election without a care about the country. (Slimy politicians? Really?)
It’s a watch now and highly recommended!
Wednesday Movie Quote!
Today it’s cell animation. (Yeah, need to go back a couple years for that one.)
I selected an exchange from The Emperor’s New Groove:
Pacha: Uh-oh.
Kuzco: Don't tell me. We're about to go over a huge waterfall.
Pacha: Yep.
Kuzco: Sharp rocks at the bottom?
Pacha: Most likely.
Kuzco: Bring it on.
Next week – computer animation film quote!
What is your insecurity today? Entered Happy Whisk’s contest? Have you seen either of those movies or the NetFlix show? And what’s your favorite cell animation film quote?
And Friday I’m tackling an interesting subject. (And Mini-Alex might make an appearance…)

I really liked House of Cards, but I wish that they tied up more loose ends in the season finale. Looking forward to seeing Mini-Alex on Friday!
Julie
I'm pleased you got this group up and running, it's good to get thing off one,s chest.
As usual I drew a blank at the movie trivial but it's fun trying to find the answers.
Yvonne.
I was hoping Jack would be a good movie. I'm looking forward to it.
Yeah, you should write more on your blog; I kinda miss those days. I'll have to pop by during A-Z to see what you're up to :)
The Emperors New Grove was one of my favorite Disney movies.
......dhole
Hey, why isn't the screen all lit up, and why aren't Hot Tamales pouring out?! I forgot to say thank you for the IWSG Alex.
Not too sure about Jack the Giantslayer, might wait to see it on DVD.
mood
Of course it would be alright to shrink down the announcements a bit.
I actually started scaling back on cover reveals for the same reason. If I hadn't I could have posted a reveal every day. :-D
I'm happy read your blog, whatever you include on it. You've done so much for everyone else, which is great, but you should really be able to write whatever you want - it's your blog.
Slimy politicians are everywhere. That much is true!
If you choose to shrink down the announcements, I think we'd all understand. You should feel free to express yourself on your own blog!
Your blog belongs to you, and if you'd like to shrink down your announcements, by all means, go for it! I'd be interested in reading your other stuff.
I remember the UK House of Cards from years ago and loved it, so v. curious to see this version.
I'll follow your blog whatever you put on it and I'd say that's absolutely your call!
I read Roland's post and some of the comments, including yours. I think the problem with self-published authors is that the promotion is focused on the same group of readers and we get flooded. It loses it's appeal and effectiveness, especially since their books come out so much more often than traditional books.
I think the cover reveals, blog tours, are important, but we should be doing a few in our group of friends and then expand out to book review blogs and other bloggers not in our circle.
That's fine if you shorten the announcements. I can totally relate. I've got so many requests for interviews/guest posts that I don't want to say no to that I had to schedule in a post about the state of blogging for early June.
Glad you liked Jack the Giant Slayer. I want to see it too.
I enjoy your movie reviews and think it would be great to have you blogging again for your blog. I don't see anything wrong by shrinking down the announcements and I can see how quickly it can overwhelm your blog content.
Can't wait to see Mini-Alex! :D
As usual, your post is so full of so many things -- once I start clicking on links, I begin to get lost :)
Congratulations to Angela -- I've signed up for her blog tour!
I'm about to self ePublish in the next week. So you can probably imagine, that's a whole wasps' nest of writer's insecurity there. Argh.
Premium Rush has been on my nebulous to-watch list for a while. I might track it down now. And I'm looking forward to catching JTGS too!
Congrats to all the authors with releases. Yay! I've not heard of the Kevin Spacey movie, but I do like his acting.
I think you should do whatever you need to do to keep blogging fun, and if that means shrinking announcements, that's okay!
My insecurity of the week: I'm never going to get book #2 of Pool of Souls written before my self-inflicted deadline. Some days being a stay-at-home mom & pregnant for the 3rd time is a smidge overwhelming.
Rant over.
That movie quote is one of the best all time. I used to know that entire movie by heart. An oldie but a goodie!
Great post Alex! The Emperors New Groove, what a great film, my kids love it, although like a lot of Disney films, I think they were more for the Mums and Dads, I'd be sitting laughing then the kids would join in laughing with me, not the film.
House of Cards? Not seen the US version, but the early 90's UK version was awesome, I bet Spacey plays the part just as well as Ian Richardson. You hated him but were drawn in by his evilness??? If that makes sense??
Julie, they left a lot hanging. Good thing there's a season two.
Donna, I'm going to enjoy the Challenge for that reason.
Julie, thank you!!!
Misha, you probably could.
Natalie, my own cover announcement was much larger than expected! But I know for review copies and the actual release, my publisher will focus on blogs and those outside of my sphere of influence.
Elise, you'll see him Friday!
Ash, good luck with your release!
Terri, I imagine it is overwhelming.
Thanks everyone!!!
Mini-Alex?!?! Mini-Alex!?! Who is this Mini-Alex?!?!
I want a mini-Alex!! Where may I get one!?!? :-)
Take care
x
Your blog basically became an aggregate site for other blogs a while ago, Alex. But I wouldn't worry about it, because clearly it works for you and your readers!
Wow, so much to comment on!
Whisk is a fantastic blogger. I adore her!
Hubby tried to see Jack with the kids but it sold out all over the place around here. Lesson? Buy tickets online.
Do I think there are to many cover reveals and book announcements - kinda sorta. I love when I see bloggers mix it up with good ol' blogging too. I'm all about supporting a fellow blogger but when I see a blog that only does covers and book promotion, I skip it.
So, I thank you for the Ninja News and the movie reviews because they rock.
I know with all that's going on today, you may not see my comment back to you on my blog so here it is, in part:
"I humbly thank you because from you, that compliment means the world and it's one I will come back to when I doubt myself as I write the book. I thank YOU for making the IWSG possible and letting me be a part of it. You rock, Alex."
Be well - longest comment over!
I don't find your posts too long. I like the variety. It is true that your blog is mostly about others, but I think that's okay.
I enjoy all the announcements and shout outs (even though I don't always have time to comment) but a few words from you and about what you're doing would be great!
Thank you so much for hanging in there with the IWSG! I don't know where I'd be without my monthly virtual group hug. :)
Alex--I do like your reviews, since they help me decide which movies to check out! Who'd have thought Premium Rush would be any good?!
I was surprised how much I liked house of cards. Usually politics bore me to death but being a fan of Kevin Spacey I had to check it out I gobbled sown all episodes quickly. Now, it is time to wait for more. Lucky thing Game of Thrones is starting again soon.
I do love the Ninja News, but I would be happy to read more from you. Thanks for the reviews. I have Wreck-it Ralph to watch this week. I'm excited about that! My insecurity today is about dealing with the frustration that a lot in this business is luck.
As a book blogger I do sometimes get flooded with cover reveals but it's only the same cover on heaps of blogs that's a bit draining. I'm always happy to see new covers for books I wouldn't have known about before.
Alex, I love your blog and the support you show the neighborhood, but do what you want. If you want to write more, WRITE. You always have something worth note.
I had to re-evaluate the direction I wanted to take with my blog, and that included getting away from addressing the techniques of writing and moving into writing about ... whatever crosses my path at the moment.
Your blog is your own, and a good one, to boot. I'll follow you no matter what you talk about.
Oh, and thanks for making that change to my link. I hate to be a bother, but could you change the name of my site to read, "ML Swift, Writer?" I'm leaving the "Chasing Windmills" tagline behind as I progress on this road to publication.
I know...I'm a pain in the butt.
I read Roland's thought provoking post. Yeah. It does get overwhelming because you want to help everyone because we're all in the same boat. And sometimes it gets a little obnoxious when you visit someone's blog and all they do it post about BUY MY BOOK stuff.
Hugs and chocolate,
Shelly
Is the Jack the Giant Slayer for kids also, or just for adults?
Oh my gosh Alex, I made the Ninja News. That is very fun and I'm happy to give away four copies of your book. This was my way of doing the cover reveal.
And to Elsie. You are most kind. Thank you bunches.
I still find out about books through blogs. However, I have over 400 books/samples in my To Read collection, so months may pass between the time I download a sample and when I actually read/buy the book. By then, the blog campaign is long forgotten. I agree with Natalie and the other commenters who said seeing the same book appear on ten blogs at once is a bit much. That's why I hired Goddess Fish to run a book tour for me and why I'll be approaching bloggers outside my normal group. Shrink the announcements if you must, but please don't give them up altogether.
PS to Alex: You know me now for awhile and you know I support bloggers doing and writing whatever they fancy, on their blogs.
Have fun with it. Whatever you do.
I love love love The Emperor's New Groove! That one always cracks me up, especially the end (squeak squeakity squeakums).
I'm always wondering how to hit the right balance on the blog, too. I want to be supportive of other bloggers/authors, but I worry if I inundate my blog with announcements I'll lose readers (and then no one benefits).
My insecurity this week? I'm wondering if I'm really as busy as I feel, or if I'm procrastinating because I'm afraid to write.
I've got House of Cards lined up on Netflix but haven't watched it yet. Made a note of Premium Rush.
Saw The Possession over the weekend - really good and creepy!
Hi Alex - happy insecurity! For everyone's info - House of Cards was a BBC series quite a few years back - we loved it but it is a DARK and CYNICAL view of politics and people. We started watching the American one of netflix and realized we'd wait until it wasn't a dark and somewhat mean time of year!
There always seem to be a couple of blogs who diligently gather news and announcements from the blogworld and kindly share with others. Personally, I like when you write a bit more personal note on your posts.I hope you do.
Hi Alex, happy insecurity day. I would be interested in the Jack movie.
Btw... can you believe it, you are a part of my writer insecurity ;)
I love your reviews! I just saw Premium Rush-I really enjoyed it~
Daughter was suppose to see Jack the Giant Slayer in 3D. I'll tell her I heard, from the Ninja it was good ;D
I am glad you are writing again! Yes, it is nice to mention the news, but don't exclude your voice!
I have been curious about House of Cards-Kevin is usually brilliant~
Insecurities seem to ride high this time of year, as the weather takes us on a mood coaster. I'm trying to make my name known for inventive art. If I can't get it published. I guess I will have to do it myself...
Great to read the movie review. I was wondering what Jack the Giant Slayer would be like.
Everyone motivated by money and re-election without a care for the country? Sounds just like real life. I adore Kevin Spacey but I don't think I can stand any more real life, I'm so disgusted with politics as it is and I'd rather something thoughtless and fun.
And I agree with some of the others that too much promotion of the same thing can be a turn off, rather than a turn on.
Yes, yes, bring back more Alex writing. And Mini-Alex.
xoRobyn
Thanks for the review of Jack, I might check it out. Got my ISWG all done. Can't wait to see min-Alex on Friday. Headed over to The Happy Whisk now...
I REALLY want to see House of Cards! It's been getting some great word of mouth. I also plan on seeing Jack the Giant Slayer sometimes this weekend or next.
P.S. Are you on Twitter?
Ray, glad you liked the quote! Yes, he is a terrible person, and yet so fascinating.
Kitty, maybe he needs to go traveling the world?
Elsie, that's why I try to offer a variety so it's not just promotion. And thank you very much! I am so glad the IWSG has mean a lot to you. YOU are the reason I started it!
Kirsten, glad you enjoy the IWSG.
Elizabeth, I was surprised by that one.
Christine, luck and timing.
ML, thank you! And I will get that changed by the end of the day.
Zoltan, maybe not really little kids. They'd be scared.
Whisk, thank YOU!!!!!!
Sandra, I won't give them up. Just a little shrinkage. And I never meant for my cover reveal to be so big. That really stunned me!
Jan, it is indeed dark.
Julie, noted!
Rachna - uh-oh!
Ella, I still want to be heard here now and then.
Seems like when I start to pick up a little momentum on my blog something comes along to knock it down. I guess that is life.
Along with just bout everybody else, I would like to hear more from YOU. Love the movie reviews. Can't wait to see 'Jack' and I enjoyed "Premium Rush'.
I generally work on the basis of writing because I want to write something, not because I think it will be good promotion. Probably it's the wrong way round, but it feels more sustainable that way.
Yeah, the blogs are often full of cover reveals and book promotion these days. And since so many of us follow the same people we see the same post everywhere we go. I've wondered lately if it's having the right effect or becoming overkill by hitting so many blogs. But if sales are up then keep it going!
I just wrote the longest comment ever about blogging - and google kicked me out of my login ... ugh!
Now you just get a HI! lol
Thanks for the hook up, I am going to look into Christian Fiction for your Kindle. I am always looking for new christian books to read.
As far as blogging goes, I think you have to look at what is the best way to write for you. I love your Ninja News and am very glad you post it. I don't think people will stop reading your blog if you shorten your posts, at all.
Happy Insecure Writer Wednesday!
Well, since it was you who brought the subject, yes, I do believe you should write a bit more of your own interests, even if you cut a bit the advertising. News are good but others are also covering that front so you can rest assure you can give yourself a bit of liberty on your own blog. I, for one, would love to read a bit more about Alex's in Alex J. Cavanaugh site.
I've been thinking along the same lines and have been doing a lot of shout outs for others too. Been trying to keep the posts shorter but not doing so well (except for today).
So after A to Z I will be getting back to my roots and posting shorter mord science and sci ti thdmed blobs.
Good luck to moving forward!
I think short announcements and maybe links in case somebody wants to follow up works... I tend to look in detail at one or two but only skim the rest, depending on genre and if I know somebody (meaning I always look if I know, I only check out matching genre if I don't)
Loved your comments on the biking movie--I agree, the initial lead is like 'what?' but with a little more, I can see it working.
Yay, I would like to hear more from YOU at your blog! For instance, I hadn't even heard of Premium Rush & appreciate your insight & now have a new movie on my list to look forward to. :)
I want to read Roland's post as I've been feeling the same way - so thanks for that tip too.
Lovely to hear from you--about you, Cap'n. Weary is the head that wears the crown...
~Just Jill
Yes, yes, yes! Write your own blog. Ninja News is great, but this is your little corner of the world, and it should include quite a bit bit of your writing, imho. That's part of the fun of visiting blogs anyway - getting to know people better through their writing.
So glad you mentioned House of Cards. We just put that one in instant queue, so this is all the more reason to start watching it soon.
Best of the day to you, Alex:) Thanks for this really neat blog hop!
I will definitely see Jack the giant slayer.
I'll check out the Christian Fiction link.
From time to time it is good to see a movie like Jack the Giant Slayer.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the film.
Your posts never seem too long for me, which is amazing since you pack so much in here. I guess it's a testament to you, Alex. You have a rather hardcore army and we love our ninja captain!
I'd like to see Jack the Giant Slayer. It sounds like fun. :)
I want to see Jack the Giant Slayer, too. Just have to convince the rest of the family to go.
As far as your insecurity this month, you could solve that easily enough by quitting your job and devoting all your time to the blog. See how simple that was? You rock, Alex!
I think blog tours are great for exposure. =)
Ooh good to know about Premium Rush. I probably would have overlooked that
You know you can do no wrong in our eyes. Shortening/changing your posts would be just fine. ;)
Ooo. Frailties sounds interesting! Neat cover, too. :)
Will there be IWSG in April? Can't remember if it takes a break for AtoZ...
I'm posting more announcements and features for other authors too, and I like this. It feels good to help others get the word out. Do what feels right to keep it fun.
not being able to leave a legacy or a first born son to carry on when i am gone... my brother has three sons all able to carry on his memory... i am insecure... alas that is probably not what you meant i am sure... yet another insecure moment...
Robyn, will do!
Optimistic, yes, under my name.
Juliana, sorry!
Al, will do!
Thanks, Laura!
Ken, no problem.
Melissa, yes it will!
I would love to have you write more. I don't think anyone would mind if other stuff is shortened.
I loved the Emperor's New Groove!
We're watching House of Cards! What a premise. Haha. But I love it. There's something very inspiring about good dialogue, excellent acting, and wonderful architecture. Did I mention no commercials!
Happy IWSG, Alex. The cover reveals are so diverse. Makes me wanna do some artwork.
Hi Alex
I think you do well with your blog.
Blogger won't let me write a post. I had one planned. I've tried to get in five times and will continue today. I don't have trouble doing anything else. Very weird.
Have a good day.
Nancy
I think blogging is very effective. We get most of our info online and it's how we meet other writers and get our names and work out there. My insecurity, which you've probably already read, is how much is too much? Do I need to worry about over-exposure?
Love that quote from "Emperor's New Groove." Bring on the challenge!!
I like Kevin Spacey a lot.
I really want to want to go see Jack (because of Ewan McGregor), but I'm pretty sure I'm just gonna wait for DVD. My bad movie for this month will probably be GI Joe.
I love hearing from you Alex! I think it's a great idea to pull back on the announcements a bit. It's your blog and your voice should be heard too :)
I like your multi-part posts and don't find them too long. But I understand that there seems to be less orginal content (which I take advantage of too) and more predesigned shout-out posts. Not that there's anything wrong with that because It's great to support each other in the writing community. I just signed up for Netflix again and was curious of House of Cards. Sounds great!
I was wondering about Jack and the Giant Slayer. I think I'll go see it. I like a fun flick.
Announcement are good and supporting your blogging friends is wonderful but I, too, would enjoy more of Alex.
I've been thinking about the blogging thing a lot lately. I feel like I'll get lost in all the news and reveals and reviews etc. when my book finally does comes out. How can you stand out when there is just So Much good stuff out there? Idk. It's intimidating.
And yes, I finally joined IWSG. My post is up today. Yay!
I've just gotten back to my blog and am glad I have, so I totally understand why you feel the need to get back into writing on your blog. Do what makes you happy, everyone will understand. :)
Alex!
We would love to see more stuff from you! It is your blog. You don't need permission! Sheesh! :)
I'll read it no matter what you put on here. OK, mostly.
I haven't seen the movies but I wanted to see the bike one. It looked good.
I forgot about the movie quote. How do I know which animation film is cell or computer?
See you Friday!
While I always enjoy seeing new book offerings, especially by new authors, (and am always happy to hosts such things, as well) I'd also like seeing more of -your- thoughts and perspective on writing, etc.
I always think of your blog as a "news center" of writer's blogs, but yeah....throw more of your own stuff in there too :)
I will be glad to see more stuff from you. I enjoy getting all of the news, but it definitely has taken over your blog. I really think you will enjoy April, simply for the *thrill* of getting your blog back.
Cell animation - had to look it up on the internet. Animated movies - the one genre of movie that never did much tickle my fancy - even when I was a kid. Go figure. Don't know if I will play along with this one or not. My knowledge base is soooo limited.
Less news - more ninja!
I heard House of Cards was a remake of an old BBC show. I still haven't caught up on so much I'm not sure if I'll ever catch up. I'll make a mental note that it is ninja approved.
I'm glad I jumped to the bottom of the comments. Now I don't have to look up cell animation. lol
My favorite cell animation quote...hm...AH!
Baggette Man: Good morning, Belle!
Belle: Good morning, m'sieur!
Baggette Man: Where are you off to?
Belle: The bookshop. I just finished the most wonderful story about a beanstalk and an ogre, and...
Baggette Man: Oh, that's nice.
My favorite Disney cartoon, too. :D Anyway, I don't think blogging is becoming irrelevant when it comes to that yet, but I do kinda just skim when I see those announcments, unless I have an idea of who the author is.
The Whisk rocks!
I just read a good article about blogging topic via Huffington post. Here check it out. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/holly-robinson/does-blogging-sell-books_b_2706943.html?utm_hp_ref=books
I loved House of Cards! And I'm fascinated how its a Netflix production.
Have a great day!
I meant to say - Premium Rush was a surprisingly good movie too....
@Whisk xoxo
The Ninja News BETTER not go away... without it, I'd be completely clueless to the happenings in this community... ;-)
Yes, super insecure today. Oh well. Cell animation--is that the old-fashio hand-drawn kind? I love those! I think Premium Rush looks great but my son told me he thought it was too slow getting to the actual story, so I never saw it. Might have to put it back on my queue. Now House of Cards sounds exactly like something I'd love. I dig Kevin Spacey! Gonna have get that one, too. Thanks Alex!!
I read Roland's post, too, Alex. It's excellent.
Sometimes bloggers have too many 'mutual pats on the back'. This goes in conjunction with too many launches, reveals, etc.
When everyone is following the marketing code of conduct (sell, sell, sell), it gets very repetitious to the readers.
I, for one, would like to HEAR YOUR VOICE more often Alex. It's a personal interaction, rather than a list of who's doing what, when, etc. Do readers link off to those other blogs? I wonder what the percentage is?
Blogging isn't dying, it's culling. The chaff flies off, and the useful stuff remains. That's what I've noticed.
Yes, you need to get your say in your own blog now and again, Alex! I hadn't seen Jack - had to work when my family went - but they did hate it. They saw it in 3D too and felt it was a waste. Oh well.
I kinnda hit a low for awhile and withdrew into my cocoon while I took the time to recharge. Now? I'm smiling again and wanted to say thanks for the monthly insecurity group. I always feel better after
this day each month. Thank you for your dedication:)
Angela's cover is wonderful! Loved the movie reviews.
My insecurity is as usual. Nothing changes.
Of course it's okay, Alex. This is YOUR blog. I must admit that I often worry a bit for you from the perspective that when a person gives so much of themselves so often, others come to expect it and feel "shorted" if they're overlooked. Then what started as happy congratulations can become a bit stressful. You are appreciated and I'd personally LOVE to see more of your own writing on your blog.
And I agree about Jack the Giant Slayer. My wife wasn't overly impressed with it, but I enjoyed it for what it was. It wasn't trying to be a LOTR or Hobbit style epic. It was fun.
I don't mind all the cover reveals. It helps me to know what's coming.
I thought Jack the Giant Slayer was a fun movie, too :)
Shrinking them a bit is a wonderful compromise. I won't quit posting them because I know one day I'll want people to show mine love and you know what moms say about having to be a friend to have friends.
I saw Jack this weekend too. I really enjoyed it and for the first time...the 3-D didn't annoy me. No throwing stuff at the screen just to impress me. I give it a thumb's up.
You are the busiest man in show business... Seriously!
I've spoken to a few people who have seen Jack, the Giant Slayer and they all liked it. Nobody said it was going to win an Oscar, but they liked it.
Jeremy, I have no kids either. However, I have an awesome nephew and we're really close. I trust him to remember.
Joylene, it's such a well-crafted show. Thanks again for helping!
Nancy, I'm sorry!
Andrew, bad is a likely prediction.
Ilima, glad you're on board!
Heather, cell is old school, like Lion King and earlier.
Robin, the Challenge will be fun for that very reason.
Rusty, it is!
Debra, good choice!
Mina, I will check it out.
Morgan, we don't want you clueless.
DG, I think many check out at least one link. And I intend to make my voice heard more often here.
Ink, thank you for being a part of it.
Thanks for the concern, Jeff. I don't want to let anyone down either.
Pat, that's a perfect description of the film!
Thanks, guys! Now time to play catch-up.
I'm not sure about a favorite cell movie quote, though I like the really old ones, from the silent and early sound era. One of my favorite old animated movies was actually done through silhouettism, not cells.
I really wanted to like Premium Rush, but I couldn't. It felt like a movie that was trying too hard. Too bad - I love that actor too! Glad to see others are enjoying it at least! Happy IWSG day!
This is my first time joining in on the IWSG. Thank you so much for hosting it! I'm a new follower, too. :)
I understand. It seems like my blog is always filling up with book info, cover reveals, etc. and that really bugs me. I'm working on helping other author's out more, because I love to spread word about their works, and doing different posts that are more about...well, fun things.
I love the quote! I haven't seen that film in a while. Might be good for a laugh.
Thanks again!
Alexandra~
I've been wanting to watch Jack the Giant Slayer, but the harsh reviews have made me put it off. Maybe I'll go watch it after all. Thanks for all the amazing support you give to your bloggy buddies/ninja minions. You rock!
Nutschell
www.thewritingnut.com
You ROCK Alex. Thank you so much for starting this support group. When Joylene first told me about it, I have to admit I wasn't eager to take on "one more" project. But, I am so happy and blessed now to be a part of this group! In fact......the first Wednesday of the month is a day I've set aside to check out the other blogs and try to encourage other writers!
Thank you my friend!
Hugs
Katt
I'm glad you'll be writing more on your blog. I love your movie reviews even though I haven't seen any of the ones reviewed today.
Shorter news would be fine. Thanks for the reviews. I'll watch premium rush now.
Hey, Alex,
Thanks for the kind words you left earlier at my blog. Much appreciated.
I might now see Jack and the Giant Slayer since you said it was well done. I can't wait till OZ debuts on the 8th! Have to pre-order my tickets later ...
Frailties of the Bond looks like an interesting read. Love the cover.
Looking forward to your "interesting" subject on Friday.
I've been slacking in actual posting too. I am stepping into some ever so slight controversial territory in the next few weeks .
Thank you again for hosting this monthly group. I really enjoy participating.
So there for next week's movie quote. Your pick this week was hilarious Kuzco is one of the most hilarious animated characters ever. About your insecurity for IWSG, you need to do what is right for you. If you feel you need to change or tweak something on your blog, do it. You've been an excellent supporter in the blogging community and I'll support whatever decision you make. My insecurity has to do with blogging as well.
I think Jack 3D is like Hansel and Gretel 3D, people will either like it or hate it. Glad you liked it though. Yay for Frailties and congrats Angela. Have a great week Alex.
I like the announcements and book cover reveals. It's a great way to get the word out about some of the indie/self-published authors out there. It's a great big community out there and I wish i had the time to participate more actively, but I enjoy seeing the excitement and success of everyone in the group especially from debut authors.
Blogging takes a lot of work. Decide what you want your blog to be like and go with that. Thanks for the movie reviews.
Alex- I'd love to see more of you! I always read your posts, but tend to look for Alex news first and announcements second :)
I can't believe I've never seen any House of Cards... going to have to do something about it I think
My insecurity - not meeting goals and writer nightmares!
Laura xxx
I find you amazing! You write constantly-have written books and are creating more, see tons of film and have the time to visit so many other people in blog world. I am amazed if i get my computer on during the weekend. Would love the see Jack the Giant Slayer and heard good things about the bike movie. The cell Animation quote. I thought that you may have been talking about me the day after having a few glasses of wine. I have not written anything in so long that i am always scared to write about my little ho hum thoughts. i don't write books or film critiques, just my little craft on my cards but do love the 5 questions per week. If someone does them i would love to follow that as well. I am intrigues about April month too. Where one writes every day about something but again, I do not think of myself as a writer and feel humbled by everyone out there who is amazing in their writing feats. I feel like I write with my feet:)
I completely forgot about the film quote this week. I love Netflix and am catching up on a lot of series I missed but I can't really watch a show about slimy politician when there are so many real crappy ones making the news everyday.
...p.s. I think I may have been culled whilst dormant (but may be missing it) should I re-add my link to the list?
Lxxx
No netflix at my sea
But house of cards is on the radar of me
And yeah the emperor's new groove was great
Most Disney ones, excluding sequels, I would highly rate
And announcements are grand
But original is fine in any old land
Carrie-Anne, which one?
Kimberly, I'm sorry!
Alexandra, thanks and welcome!
Katt, so glad you have benefited from it!
Michael, just a couple more days to Oz...
Doreen, glad you are a part of it!
Aw, thanks Laura!
Birgit, all are welcome. And your comment made me chuckle.
I'd love to hear more from you. I like the announcements and all, but it would be fun to hear more from you personally.
Also, great quote. My personal favorite..."I'll turn him into a flea. A harmless little flea. And then I'll put that flea in a box, and I'll put that box in another box, and then I'll mail that box to myself. And when it arrives - ahahaha - I'll smash it with a hammer. Or to save on postage I'll just poison him with this!"
Alex, I think you could post the phone book and you'd still get 1000 comments. Shorter is fine. I'm still watching Jack even if it is bad. I love giants and Premium Rush was good. I'm still not sure why It didn't do well.
You can do whatever you want on your blog. Though I would love to hear more of your voice.
I'm looking forward to your interesting topic on Friday!
If you need to shorten stuff to fit it all in that's a perfectly reasonable thing to do.
Right, I'm off to try Happy Whisk's contest.
I'll hang around whatever you decide to post. Sometimes less is more as they say anyway!
Off to check out some IWSG posts I haven't visited before!
Alex---I love your announcements, but I'd also love to read more of "you." I say take the space and say what you need to say--give yourself the same room you afford everyone else. I'll still be a fan!!
I feel I don't write much for my own blog anymore, too. Sometimes I'm glad, but sometimes I'd like more space on my blog.
I'll have to check out House of Cards. I've been watching Monk, Dresden Files, Gravity and The Gates.
Premium Rush sounds great! I love that Gordon-Levitt dude.
I've been thinking the same thing lately--so many book shout outs that I'm barely getting time to blog about me. But whatever--just have to intermingle all of it together these days.
It does seem announcements are taking over, so scaling back a bit seems reasonable. It's your blog after all.
House of Cards sounds like a good movie. I think the majority of politicians don't care about the people of America - just themselves and money.
I started reading "Overcoming Adversity" and like it very much.
My insecurity -- among the many, I've lately been focusing on my utter inability to market my book (soon to be books, plural). I can write, edit, rewrite, copy edit, and do historical and other such research like a demon. But marketing? I'm a blithering idiot.
Of course you should appear more on your own blog, Alex darlin'. You're so generous to other writers you deserve some of the same love and attention.
I do like reading what people write more than reading about book releases, although I think it's great that we help promote each other. Tricky thing to keep in balance.
I definitely want more Alex, Alex. And for the announcements, shrinking them is a good plan. I'll be happy if you don't give them up completely though. I find a lot of books to add to my To Be Read list right here.
Laura, re-add! Sorry if you were culled...
Pat, you are a master rhymer!
SL, that movie had some great lines!
Maurice, that made me laugh!!!
Randi, thank you.
Helena, marketing is never fun.
Thanks, everyone! You guys rock.
If you think it would be better for where you want your blog to be, then go for it!
House of Cards sounds like a good show. I don't use Netflix, though.
I'd love to see more "Alex" on the blog, but I know you're busy with so many announcements. And besides, you're so good at them!
Love that cover, Angela!! Congrats!
I do miss your movie reviews, especially since I'm a big movie fan. I haven't been to a lot lately, though. Ugh.
I do see a lot of announcements, cover reveals and such. I don't mind them too much. I enjoy seeing the success of others and will continue to support other writers when possible.
Unfortunately, my problem is hubris, not insecurity. Plus addiction, of course. I appreciate your comment on Recovery
I'm ok with shrunk announcements. Haha, I used to quote that Emperor's New Groove line all the time after it first came out!
Allison (Geek Banter)
We watched Premium Rush a couple weeks ago and REALLY liked it. Kind of a surprise.
And I'm all for you writing more of your own stuff and shrinking the announcements. More you...thumbs up! :)
Your quote is seriously from one of my top 10 favorite movies! I love it! :) Oops, you know one now... but I promise not to give away the rest!
I saw "Jack the Giant Slayer" and I really liked it. The plot did have some good twists and it wasn't cheesy. Also, I'm a big fan of Ewan McGregor. :)
Candilynn, everyone needs a talent I guess.
Miranda, more movie reviews - check!
Allison, bring it on!
DL, more me - check!
Krista, it was just a lot of fun.
I would love to see Jack, maybe a way to get me out of smoke ridden house!
Could sure use the fresh air!
Alex,
Dude, I'm delighted that two of my adoring fans, Misha and Joylene, are co-hosting the IWSG. And I notice on the sidebar of my blog, that so many of the blogs have the IWSG logo.
You know I'm always honest with you, Alex. What you do is admirable and you truly epitomise bringing awareness of others. That is commendable and most appreciated. Like you, I read a lot of blog posts. There is so much to take in on here and I feel bad I don't acknowledge it all.
I would love to see you just write a posting about how you are.
I've never been insecure about writing. Perhaps it's because I don't write with any unrealistic expectations. I write when I want and whatever I want. That works for me.
Alex, as a friend, I don't want you to tire yourself out. You promise me?
With respect and goodwill,
Gary
Definitely, want you to do more but O agree with the above comment. We all want you to do what's best for you. Happy IWSG!!! I think it's amazing that you do the cover reveals, btw.
You'll have to check out my blog on March 18 for your Top Ten Movie Countdown Blogfest to hear my favorite cell animation movie quote(s). hehe Making you all curious now.
I haven't been around here long, but I can see how much time you devote to everybody, and I don't think anybody would mind if you did stuff for yourself. If they do, they're silly. I'd enjoy seeing you tackle topics, other than bloghops and fests. :)
Premium Rush sounds great! And I love Kevin Spacey. American Beauty and The Negotiator rock! I haven't been writing many blog posts either.
I'm feeling more insecurities in my day job than in my writing recently, but I'm sure that will change soon!
I saw the movie about the bike--Premium Rush. I loved it too.
Gary, thank you! I am here for others. There is no greater thing I could do.
Julia, can't wait!
Celeste, thank you!
Thanks for the reviews! I would really like to see Jack the Giant Slayer, but I'm not sure I can get the nonstop action of family life to slow down enough to take in a movie . . .we'll see. I'm down with some cold/bug/nasty so I haven't been hitting the IWSG list like I would like to but hopefully tomorrow everyone will have their posts up still and I'll just be late.
Also . . .I would love to read some Alex posts! That would be cool.
Hey, Alex. How have you been? I hope we're not growing too tired of cover reveals just yet... :) Yeah, I'll have one soon as well. We just finished it.
I'm glad to hear that Premium Rish is a good film because I wondered about that one. I'll have to check that one out. Thanks for the advanced recon!
-Jimmy
Alex, it's just so amazing how you use your blog to help promote our blogger buddies. Thanks for all you do.
Oooh! And I've wondered if House of Cards was any good. I need to check that one out. Thanks for the recommendation.
I enjoy your movie reviews. I had been on the fence about Jack, but I might check it out this weekend. I've been watching House of Cards and find it addicting.
I want to see both of those movies!! If only I had the time! Not feeling insecure at the moment . . . just really really really tired:-)
Hi,
Here after such a long time. Thanks for the IWSG idea. It helps me keep connected with some of my old blog buddies.
I posted mine at the strike of 12, (technically still Wednesday) so I am hopping around blogs a day later.
Actually, I was attracted to your blog because of your movies reviews - perfect news snippets kind.
Very few people celebrate others' success and your announcing it gives them fresh readers more often than not.
I like the look of Angela's Book - does that guy turn into a peacock?(cool).
Jack, I'll give it a miss - never liked that story much- it condones killing and stealing from someone just because they are different -
The other two are interesting - though Kevin tends to go into theatrical mode in some movies.
BTW, forgot to mention, that's a cool header. I know, I know, cool ain't that cool any more but awesome is overused too.
I wrote my first IWSG post on Falling for Fiction today! WHOOT! I'm so proud!
And I'm way excited for Angela's book!
Do what you gotta' do!
I actually had no idea Netflix had original programming until I did a survey the other day, so I haven't checked any of it out. I do like Kevin Spacey, though.
Shannon at The Warrior Muse
Yeah, great, thanks for your recommendation of Premium Rush.
It's amazing that your blog has become so much more than one dude talking about stuff, but I'm definitely cool with seeing you write more :)
I might go see Jack next week. Most reviews I've read have panned it, but I think if I switch my brain off then I'll be okay :)
Jamie
I don't see how you'd have time to 'write' your blog constantly. I'm still totally awed that you can do all of this... see my mouth on the floor? Amazing.
Loving those movie reviews - have to go see them, but especially the Jack and The Giant Slayer - I fancied that since I first saw it advertised and while back. My hubs isn't so enthralled however. He's probably love Premium Rush though, so I could trade :D
As for House of Cards - I adore KEvin Spacey, so we may have to check out that on streaming.
My insecurities are up. I've opened up a meme called Indie Soap Box Files. It's where I'll be featuring other indies and their own indie publishing or writing gripes/lessons learned. I have a group on FB too. :D!
I wonder how on earth you manage to get though all these comments! :) X
Shah - http://bit.ly/10637Ft
New cover and book releases have been coming hot and heavy recently, haven't they. I hope you find time to put your own content on the blog - I love that!
I really enjoyed your reviews. "Rush" sounds great and I look forward to seeing it.
Great post! :-)
You know, Alex, you do so much for the writing community and all of us in it that I don't think anyone would ever mind you posting for yourself when you feel the urge. You are one of the most unselfish people I know. Write what you want and thanks for all that you do. :)
I don't think anyone will mind if you cut your announcements a little shorter. Besides, I'm sure we'll all enjoy whatever you choose to write, anyway :)
Tyrean, hope you feel better.
James, that's cool!
Rekha, glad the IWSG gives you a sense of connection. And I'll start posting more movie reviews. Jeremy did the header for me and yes, it's very cool.
Leigh, will have to read it! So many posts, so little time.
Jamie, you can leave a little power on and it's still good.
Shah, one comment at a time!
Mel, thank you!
I know what you mean about all the reveals, etc. I love supporting my buddies too, but I've hardly even had time to think about writing a more personal post recently. It's more to do with being so busy, though. After the A-Z, I'm going to see about refreshing things on my blog (starting by joining the IWSG - can't believe I haven't yet!)
I know what you mean, Alex. March on my blog won't have all that much that's mine, but I'm good to help out and still trying to squeeze in my two conference updates. lol
But, yeah. I miss the stuff that was more about you.
I can see where Roland is coming from, but there's a difference between you revealing other people's covers and helping promote your blogging friends' work and being the blogger equivalent of a door-to-door salesman who does nothing but peddle his own books -- constantly. "I wrote a book! Did you see my book? Buy my book! Here's another book! Did you buy it?" <- 4 weeks worth of posts
The soft sell works wonders. If people are going to buy it, then they're going to buy it. Hounding them endlessly will only serve to drive them away. And anyone who stops reading your blog because you post a few cover reveals or even pimp out your own book from time to time isn't your target audience anyway.
There is certainly a balance with cover reveals, etc. but I agree that as long as your blog has other content, and you are not only promoting your own book, it's fine. I think you do a great job of informing us about tons of events, as well as keeping your own personal views in your content. And I can't wait to see what kind of interesting Mini-Alex escapade might happen on Friday.
I've been doing some evaluating of my blogging habits as well, Alex. Roland's piece was excellent. Basically, I want to support my fellow authors, too. But I want to do it in a unique way that might actually sway some people to check out their work--plus give the authors more exposure. (The new feature-character-profile thing is the result.)
I just feel like cover reveals, etc. have gotten so commonplace that people pass over them almost completely.
I know you are connected to way too many authors to do something so involved. I stumbled across something this week that might interest you and 'might' be a way to handle your problem. (And no, I don't think anyone should/would complain if you shortened the announcements--just being mentioned here nets a ton of exposure. In the words of Ron Burgundy, "You're kind of a big deal." :)
I'll shoot you and eMail about it...
I've been wondering this same thing, as I realize I've mostly just been sharing reveals, etc instead of writing myself. I love doing it and plan to keep doing it, but at the same time I'm glad for the A-Z because it will be good for me to get back to simply writing posts myself.
Looking forward to Friday as I always love when Mini-Alex pops up.
Hi, Alex,
I'm loving Angela's cover. All that white hair vs a youthful body makes me go hmmm.
Coming here feels like getting up to date on all that's going on around the blogging community, which for me is a good thing as I manage to miss LOTS of stuff, but yes, if you feel you're shifting focus, you gotta do something to get back on track.
I love your ninja news. Keeps me in the loop. Even when I was on my blogging break I ALWAYS read your blog to make sure I was up to date.
Yeah, great, you're a great blogger, your blog is open to many interesting news, especially to writers blogger.
I did see Happy Whisk's giveaway. Pretty cool! I liked your movie reviews, too.
I've noticed that you don't really write for yourself anymore. It's a lot of promoting other people which is great but you need to get back to writing for you.
I need to put Premium Rush in my queue.
Nick, glad you joined us! And I've nothing scheduled (reveal, guest post, etc.) during the Challenge, so expect some fun here.
Donna, then there will be more about me.
Brandon and Bryan, I do intend to keep promoting my friends! Plus a mention now and then when something happens with my books.
Shell, and that's why I feature a variety - something for everyone.
Thanks, EJ!
Julie, that's my plan as well.
JL, the blogging news won't stop - promise!
Cassie, thank you!
Rats, I keep forgetting to do these insecure posts, but I'll do it next time:) I like your comment about how you aren't writing as much yourself for your own blog, but I think that's a sign that you've created a great blog where people can provide content:)
I too liked Jack the Giant Slayer. Shrinking down the announcement posts in favor of more original content sounds like a good idea to me, Alex.
Alex, thanks so much for starting the IWSG. :)
Misha and Joylene loved the movie rewiews. Looking forward to seeing Jack.
Jack does look like a fun movie! :)
Mark, no worries. And that's good to know.
Michael, that's the plan. And welcome back!
Elizabeth, glad you enjoy it!
The blogging news and shout-outs are great, but of course we'd love to hear more from/about you too! :-) I haven't seen Jack, but I have high hopes for the new Oz movie.
I lvoe the Ninja news, it makes me feel like I'm keeping abreast of the 411 in the blogosphere. But I do like your movie reviews, too.
Jack looks fantastic, but I am looking forward to Oz. I love Michelle, Mila and Rachel.
Cell animation...have to go with The Last Unicorn "I am no longer like the others, for no unicorn who was ever born could regret, but now I do. I regret."
I totally understand why your posts are the way they are: you are the newspaper or stop at the water cooler for us bloggers to check on what's new. That said, I would like to see more of your writing, so yes, shorten the shout-outs and give us more ALEX. I especially love the movie reviews, the trivia.
I love the free books on Amazon...but I see both sides to that dilemma about equally.
I just bought the most amazing book that I found visiting A-Z folks. I think I'll feature it in a future post when I've finished reading it...but after two chapters I'm totally hooked. Locked Within by Paul Anthony Shortt. Don't have time to dig up the link...
Yes, mini-Alex should get out more! At least he has fashion sense. Next paycheck I'm getting my Ninja Army t-shirt!
I think the new thing in your banner (and I haven't read any of your comments) looks like he's combined elements from all three book covers...but I have the Kindle versions so I can't check. Well, unless I had time for Amazon, which I do not. Barely have time to breathe...

Hi Alex,
Where did my comment go? I thought you may have had trouble finding my post for IWSG. So I left a quick direct link to help you find it.
It's not that big a deal. I just want you to know that I did post something for this month's IWSG. And I would like to know that you know this.
Best wishes,
Anna
