Cabbage and the Phone Book

Last month, Maurice commented that I could post the phone book and still get a million comments, and last week Gary commented that I could get that many comments posting a head of cabbage.

While I wouldn’t really do that to you, thought it would be fun to add them to a post and see what happened.

Oddly enough, the cabbage gathered the most comments. I guess produce is more popular!

When Hollywood runs out of ideas, they remake older films. Sometimes this works, and sometimes it fails miserably.
List the best remake you’ve ever seen and the worst.
Added bonus – list the worst and/or best song remake you’ve ever heard!

The Best Movie Remake -

I had several movies in mind – The Thomas Crown Affair, Ocean’s 11, War of the Worlds. But I had to go with one of my favorite movies:

John Carpenter’s The Thing

Have you seen the original, The Thing From Another World? Granted it’s a 1951 film, but it’s bad.

Enter John Carpenter. He created a film that is tense, atmospheric and isolated. The Thing is unlike any creature you’ve ever seen, taking the form of anyone it kills. Once it invades the Antarctic camp, no one is sure who is human and who is not. Add special effects that still hold up to this day (the film was made in 1992) and the ever-awesome Kurt Russell, and this is one creepy, powerful film.

And the 2011 prequel was just a thinly disguised lousy remake – its special effects weren’t even better!

The Worst Movie Remake –

There have been many average to below average remakes in the past few years. The one I selected is truly the bottom of the barrel.

Clash of the Titans

The original 1982 version had heart. It was also one of the last movies to showcase Ray Harryhausen’s work. It wasn’t a great movie, but something about it just really clicked. It was a throwback to the innocence of the 50’s and 60’s Sinbad movies and similar films. Classic actors such as Laurence Olivier and Burgess Meredith graced the screen, along with a pre- LA Law Harry Hamlin. Simple but a delight.

The 2010 version was the most soulless film ever. It ripped the heart right out of the story. It was all cold, empty special effects, and a cardboard cutout of Harry Hamlin could’ve done a better acting job than Sam Worthington. This was probably one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen in my life.

I’d rather watch Sharktopus again than the Clash of the Titans remake!

The Best Song Remake -
Love Lives Bleeding (live) by Dream Theater (Original version by Elton John)
Amazing cover made all the more brilliant that it’s live but sounds like it was recorded in the studio.

The Worst Song Remake -
Back in Black by Six Feet Under (Original version by AC/DC)
Normally I would rally around a metal band remaking a song, but the Cookie Monster belching out Back in Black repeatedly is hilarious.

MOTIVATED

Milo at In Media Res
If you’ve ever wondered if there was a market for short stories, then wonder no longer. Milo is THE short story master. He doesn’t just write and submit a couple a year – this dude submits weekly, and his rate of acceptance and publication reflects that. Last year during the Challenge, he posted links to sites that accept short stories, which was very generous. Milo is motivated times a thousand!

Jeffrey at World of the Scribe
Two years ago – maybe longer? – Jeffrey’s manuscript The Flettleglag Force was accepted for publication. He’s been waiting… and waiting… and waiting for its release. Jeffrey didn’t remain in limbo though – he continued writing and finally decided to self-publish his fantasy epic, Spell of Entrapment. I admire his bravery and determination to expose his work to the world. Jeffrey is also one of my awesome critique partners and one of the first real friends I made here in the blogging world. Dude, you rock – keep pushing forward!

Rush
This is a band that is motivated by the sheer joy of making music. Formed in 1968, the band’s first record dropped in 1974 but didn’t quite gel until drummer and lyricist Neil Peart joined later the same year. Nineteen studio records (with a twentieth coming this year) and the band is still going strong and sound just as good as ever.

NINJA NEWS! (And movie reviews)

The Cabin in the Woods
Wow! The trailer does NOT give away the twist. It’s not a parody, but rather a scathing satire of the horror genre. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, it’s clear the makers are in on the joke. With Whedon’s impeccable writing, some scenes are laugh out loud funny. I wouldn’t dare put any spoilers in this review, but sufficed to say, the third act is bat-shit crazy.

The Thing (2011)
This movie is well done, the acting decent, and the special effects really good. It was cool seeing the alien’s spaceship. As a prequel to 1982’s The Thing, you know where it’s going and it leads you right there. That said, it didn’t break any new ground or bring anything new to the table. And with CGI, they could do more, but gone was Carpenter’s skill of proper lighting to bring out the best in the special effects. Worth a watch if you’re curious. Or bored.

We are almost halfway through the Challenge!!! Good to hear so many are having fun with it. And some of you have worked SO hard on your themes – I am impressed. Don’t forget that May 7 will be the Challenge Reflections post, so mark your calendars. Details soon.

October Movie Preview!

It’s that time again!
Don’t forget, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil comes out this Friday, although those with Direct TV’s HDNet can see it tonight, Wednesday! (Rusty, don’t forget to set the DVR…)

The Plot: A future-set story where robot boxing is a popular sport and centered on a struggling promoter (Jackman) who thinks he's found a champion in a discarded robot. During his hopeful rise to the top, he also discovers he has an 11-year-old son who wants to know his father.
Sounds goofy. Every time I see the commercial, all I can think about are Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots…

The Ides of March
Director: George Clooney
Stars: Paul Giamatti, George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ryan Gosling
The Plot: An idealistic staff member (Gosling) for presidential hopeful (Clooney) gets a crash course on dirty politics during his stint on the campaign trail.
Excellent cast.

The Thing
Director: Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.
Stars: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen
The Plot: At an Antarctica research site, the discovery of an alien craft leads to a confrontation between graduate student Kate Lloyd (Winstead) and scientist Dr. Sander Halvorson (Thomsen). While Dr. Halvorson keeps to his research, Kate partners with Sam Carter (Edgerton), a helicopter pilot, to pursue the alien life form.
This is a prequel to Carpenter’s master, The Thing, so we all know how it ends…

Footloose
Director: Craig Brewer
Stars: Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid
The Plot: City kid Ren McCormack (Wormald) moves to a small town where rock 'n' roll and dancing have been banned, and his rebellious spirit shakes up the populace.
Absolutely no need for a remake. Not a chance I’ll give money to this film. It’s more than six degrees from Kevin Bacon!

DVD Release – Green Lantern
Hey, I enjoyed it! So sue me.

The Three Musketeers
Director: Paul W.S. Anderson
Stars: Logan Lerman, Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson
The Plot: D'Artagnan (Lerman) and his musketeer comrades Athos (Macfadyen), Porthos (Stevenson) and Aramis (Evans) thwart the plans of Royal Prime Minister Richelieu to usurp the King's power.
Could be fun. Could be average.

In Time
Stars: Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Murphy, Olivia Wilde
The Plot: Set in a world where people stop aging at 25, but are genetically-engineered to live only one more year, having the means to buy your way out of the situation is a shot at immortal youth. Here, a young man (Timberlake) accused of murder goes on the run with a hostage (Seyfried), though their eventual connection becomes an important part of the way against the system.
This one sounds intriguing. Wonder if Olivia Wilde will be naked again?

The Rum Diary
Director: Bruce Robinson
Stars: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart
The Plot: American journalist Paul Kemp (Depp) takes on a freelance job in Puerto Rico for a local newspaper during the 1950s and struggles to find a balance between island culture and the ex-patriots who live there.
Not sure why, but the preview amuses me.
