MST3K Live! Plus Hotel Transylvania 3 Review, Scary Technology, IWSG, and New Releases

MST3K Live

We’d seen the RiffTrax crew perform a live show, so when I heard the new MST3K crew was hitting the road, we had to see it. Road trip time! And it did not disappoint.

The film was Deathstalker II. A cheesy 80’s sword and sorcery movie that lacked all the blood, boobs, and carnage of the first one. (Of course, it was edited for the show, but it was still incredibly tame.) The sword fights were so slow, it was as if we were watching them in slow motion. The sets were clearly plastic. Plus it was filled with pop culture references, hairstyles, makeup, and everything else from the 80’s. Not to mention that it lifted many scenes directly from other movies. It was the perfect movie to riff.

The show was exactly like the television series. The clone of Pearl Forrester filled in for the missing mad scientists, Kinga Forrester and Max. It kicked off with an invention exchange and during breaks from the movie, there were segments with the characters.

The best was when Pearl went into the audience for a Q&A with Crow and Tom Servo. People asked the craziest questions. One woman was just days away from her wedding (and wondering if she was making the right choice) and another a college student skipping studying for finals. Crow thanked them both for ditching major life events to come see them.

The riffs were of course hilarious. So many good one line zingers that you wished you could remember afterwards.

The show continues for the next month – if they are coming to a town near you, I highly recommend you go see them.

Added bonus – the next season of MST3K will debut on NetFlix on Thanksgiving Day. Turkey Day returns!

Don’t forget to visit the souvenir stand and get a t-shirt or two!

Movie Review – Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation

We didn’t see this in the theater so I indulged my wife with a rental. Because there were so many unanswered questions from the second movie…
Dracula, his family, and the whole monster clan take a vacation on a Monster Cruise Ship. This voyage spells danger though as the Van Helsing family is in charge of the ship.
This movie, like the previous two, never achieves great. But it does entertain and has some good laughs. The voice cast is impressive – all the originals return – and comedian Jim Gaffigan and icon Mel Brooks joins them.
The cruise ship gives the characters a new environment. The werewolf couple discovers a little freedom when they realize there’s a daycare on board and they dump off their fifty-plus kids. Dracula of course finds a love interest.
There’s a good message about family and friendship as well.
If you liked the first two films, you’ll enjoy this one – recommended.

MST3K/RiffTrax Fanboy, BattleBots, You Rock Awards, and Ninja News!

Why This Fanboy Loves MST3K/RiffTrax

Back in the early 90’s, I was flipping through the channels when I came upon Invasion USA on what was the Comedy Channel. Only this wasn’t just the crappy 1950’s film – there were three people silhouetted in the right bottom corner. A guy and two robots were making fun of the movie.

At first, I thought it was weird but interesting. Slowly, I realized just how hilarious the jokes were. About twenty minutes, I got into the vibe and was hooked. The humor was right up my alley – bad puns, snarky observations, and tons of pop culture references.

The premise of this silly show that made fun of movies – evil scientists had shot an employee into space so they could experiment on him by making him watch bad movies. Trapped on the Satellite of Love, he created robots to keep him company – Crow T. Robot, Tom Servo, Gypsy, and CamBot.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 went through many changes. The creator, Joel Hodgson, envisioned it more as a kid’s show. When he left, Mike stepped into the role as the man trapped on the Satellite of Love. Coupled with Kevin (Tom Servo) Murphy’s sense of humor, this led to more adult stuff.

When Trace Beaulieu left, there was cause for concern. Not only was he the main evil scientist, he was the voice of Crow T. Robot. However, the very first show with Bill Corbett as Crow started with this line – ‘Screw you, Greenland!’ And all was right with the world.

It won many awards but was eventually cancelled in 1999. Since then, the core MST3K guys started with Film Crew and then moved on to RiffTrax. It’s not quite the same as MST3K, but it’s the same guys telling the jokes and therefore awesome. They provide tracks to hundreds of popular films – all you do is sync them up with the actual movie. They then moved on to riffing older films, some of which they’d done as MST3K, and selling the videos.

It really became awesome when they moved to live events. The first one I saw was Jack the Giant Killer. I’d seen the MST3K Movie in the theater and there’s something magical about being surrounded by geeks who get you – and the RiffTrax experience was no different. That is why I am now a big fan and refuse to miss any RiffTrax event!

That’s right – it’s back! Last week was the play-in round and on June 23 on ABC, season two of the BattleBots reboot begins!

The homemade robots are back for season two, where they will battle against each other in a single elimination tournament until there is one champion. The ten episode series will feature next generation robots – bigger, faster and stronger than ever before. The show will continue to emphasize the design and build elements of each robot, the bot builder back stories, their intense pursuit of the championship and the spectacle of the event. While there’s only one weight-class, there are a huge variety of deadly weapons. Forty-eight robots will enter, but, in the end, only one will win the Giant Nut.

Yes, it’s giant BattleBot robots destroying each other – what could be more awesome?

You Rock Awards

I started this six years ago, right after the very first A to Z Challenge. This is to honor blogger buddies who have come to mean so much to me over the years.

Past recipients include Arlee, Yvonne, RaShelle, Hannah, Jeffrey, Gail, Rusty, Chuck, George, Jeremy, Matthew, Old Kitty, Ella, M Pax, Roland, Melissa, Robyn, Lynda, Michael, Heather, Stephen, Father Dragon Al, the late Tina, Damyanti, Edi, Karen, Elizabeth, Suze, Susan, Pat, Jo, Michelle, Brandon and Bryan, Christine, and Truedessa.

This is always such a difficult choice! I’ve made so many friends over the years. But certain people have really stuck with me and come to mean a lot to me.

So, this year’s You Rock recipients are…

Rachna Chhabria at Rachna’s Scriptorium
She is just about the sweetest person I know online. A talented author who possesses a wonderful way with words, her weekly offerings will make you think. She is also a huge supporter and cheerleader. We’ll never meet in person, but we’ve met in spirit. Rachna, you have made a difference to this Ninja – and you rock!

Liza at Middle Passages
We’ve been blogger buddies for years. I remember when she wasn’t working and all the things she’s gone through since then. She continues to write and take amazing photos of her beautiful coastal town. She’s always been there for me and I appreciate her friendship and support. Liza, you rock!

Yolanda Renee at Defending the Pen
Another friend who’s been around for a while. I still remember when her first book came out. She knows how to put a twist on a story like nobody’s business. She defends not only the pen, but her friends. And she’s a Ninja Minion above and beyond! I hope she’ll always be there. Yolanda, you rock.

Nilanjana Bose at Madly-in-Verse
We met through the Challenge, so only fitting she was one of my Minions this year. She writes amazing poetry and prose and really does her research. Nila is always there and something about her presence is reassuring. I imagine she’s always smiling, her joy contagious! She’s a whisper on the wind – and she rocks!

Fundy Blue at Standing Into Danger
You want someone down to earth and genuine? Fundy is that and more. A traveler by heart, she’s working on a book based on the letters her father wrote while teaching Indian children in the far, far north. And the posts about these letters are fascinating. What’s amazing is that no matter what, Fundy shows up online all bubbly and excited. Your excitement is contagious, Fundy – and you rock!

Hank Kaykuala at Rainbow
Yes, I like the ladies! But there are a few cool dudes out there as well. Hank is one of them. I remember visiting Pat Hatt’s site and wondered – who is this dude who has to be number one all the time? Eventually, we became friends, and I realized the cultural diversity Hank offered in his poetry and prose posts. I can always count on him. Hank, you’re number one and you rock!

JH Moncrieff
If you’ve not met JH, you are missing out. This great horror writer looks like she stepped right out from her own goth pages. She knows all about the supernatural and the unknown, and she tantalizes us with unique events and unsolved mysteries. Don’t let the dark fool you, though. She is a bright light of genuine appreciation and friendship. JH, you rock!

Anyone else a longtime fan of MST3K? Been to a RiffTrax event? Excited for the next BattleBots? Picking up some new books? Have you got your t-shirt yet? And are you following those awesome, rocking bloggers?

Rush R40 Concert, Tomorrowland Review, Question of the Month, Battle of the Bands, and Ninja News!

Today I am visiting the great Rachna’s Scriptorium and discussing a writing topic - Don’t Lose Sight of the Characters. Please stop by!

Rush – R40 Tour

Caught these guys recently on their R40 tour, celebrating their 40 (actually 41) year career.

It was bittersweet knowing it might also be their last tour. Neil Peart wants to spend more time with his family, plus the guys are in their sixties now. It’s a shame, because they’ve never sounded as good as they do right now.

The stage set was awesome and very clever. It went backwards in time from the steampunk setup of Clockwork Angels to old amps on folding chairs with a high school gym on the big screen in the background. (Their first paid gig!) The stage hands worked hard to keep the set evolving backwards throughout the show.

They played some songs they haven’t played in years. (Again, going back in time with their selections.) Highlights included Between the Wheels from Grace Under Pressure, Cygnus X-1 Book II from Hemispheres, and Xanadu and Cygnus X-1 Book I from A Farewell to Kings.

It was an amazing show – Rush has never let me down!

Movie Review

Tomorrowland

It started off intriguing, and then went into a slow decline.

There were a lot of plot contrivances and parts of the film were a bit convoluted. And unbelievable. (A rocket ship built under the Eiffel Tower over a hundred years ago? Right…) Plus there were some unoriginal clichĂ©s, like the diatribe by the villain at the end.

The Tommorwland sets and designs were really cool. Just a shame most of the movie takes place in the here and now.

It was also a bit preachy. (Not as bad as Happy Feet, but still preachy.)

Overall it was all right but not great. A decent way to shoot two hours. Just don’t expect to remember much after you leave the theater. If you want a great film that you will remember, go see Mad Max: Fury Road instead.

(And for a really great breakdown of the movie’s borrowed plots, read the review at Pensuasion.)

Battle of the Bands

Hosted by Faraway Eyes and Stephen T. McCarthy.

I decide to pick something a little different - Peter Gabriel’s Shock the Monkey.

Now, if I’d just pitted Coal Chamber’s version against Gabriel’s, then quite likely the original would win. But I dug around and found another band who had covered the song. You know the routine – pick your favorite:

Suburban Tribe

Coal Chamber (with Ozzy Osbourne)

Make your selection! Votes will be tallied and posted next Monday.

Question of the Month

Hosted by Michael at A Life Examined, this is the debut of Question of the Month!

If your house caught on fire, what's the one thing you'd grab before running out?

Trusting that my wife would be running out with me, I would grab my guitars. I have several Les Paul guitars and a Music Man, and I would do my best to scoop them all up. Loosing those in the fire just might make me cry!

Have you seen Rush in concert? (Have you seen them almost thirty times like me?) Seen Tommorrowland? (More important, have you seen Fury Road?) Got your Challenge t-shirt yet? Ready for Wednesday’s IWSG post? (Plus the June movie preview.) Which version of Shock the Monkey is your favorite? And what would you grab if your house was on fire...?

RiffTrax Live: Santa Claus – the Experience! Plus Writing Habits, BOTB Results, and Ninja News

I am visiting the incredibly talented, successful, and uber-resourceful Elizabeth S. Craig today. I’m discussing the ultimate in networking opportunities and the new IWSG book. Please stop by!

RiffTrax Live – Santa Claus!

Last week the RiffTrax crew – Mike, Bill, and Kevin – took on a film for the holidays: Santa Claus.

It was no ordinary holiday movie, though. This Mexican film was directed by someone who grew up in the carny business – and it shows in the weirdness of the story. What little story exists, anyway. The devil sends his minion Pitch to thwart Santa’s plans, but fortunately Santa has senile old Merlin and creepy mechanical reindeer to help him. (Folks, you can’t make this stuff up unless you’re on some really good drugs.)

As always, it was hilarious, and Mike, Bill, and Kevin had no trouble making fun of the film. If you’ve never seen a broadcast of the show, you need to catch the next one!

Blogger buddy Susan Kane got to go see the show as well last Thursday, which was her birthday!

Before the show, they present a series of slides. Here are some for your enjoyment!

Gary Numan beat… Gary Numan. Ironic, huh?

Writing Habits – Before and After

Last week, Rachna Chhabria posted about not having enough time to write. She noted ‘I read somewhere that a writer gets the maximum amount of time to write their first book, after that there are sundry things occupying a writer’s life space: book tours, book signing events, author interactive sessions etc.’

That got me to thinking about the way I write now as opposed to pre-publication. It took me almost a year to write my first book. (Not counting edits.) The three books since that time have taken two to four months for the first draft.

And of course now, I do have author duties and an online presence that takes a chunk of my time.

Looking back, I realized that first book was written in sporadic, stolen chunks of time. The other three were written during dedicated blocks of time. The big difference, despite the extra demands on my time, was my focus. I knew I had to get them done and set aside three-five hours to write every single night no matter what.

So, that’s how my writing habits have changed. Have yours changed?

Anyone else catch RiffTrax last week? (Or had the misfortune of seeing that film without RiffTrax’s help?) Catch Chrys’ post? Downloaded the IWSG book? Getting some new books? And have your writing habits changed?

Don’t forget to visit Elizabeth S. Craig!

And not posting again until next Monday, so see you then.

And - switched to embedded comments to get rid of stupid word verification.
