Golden Schmoes Winners, March Movie Preview, Don’t You Hate Book Tours, New Releases, and Monday Music Moves Me

Movie News

The Golden Schmoes Award winners were announced!

Mad Max: Fury Road got the most wins with seven. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was second with six. Fury Road took home Favorite Movie and Best Director. Most Overrated Movie of the Year goes to Jurassic World. (Good!)

For a full list of winners, visit JoBlo.

And I’m sure none of that was reflected in Sunday’s Oscars… (Although it was close - Fury Road did win six.)

Nicholas Meyer, who directed Star Trek II and IV and did the screenplays for several others, is back on board. According to JoBlo’s site:
Meyer has signed on as a consulting producer and writer for Bryan Fuller's show, which will be airing on CBS All Access sometime in 2017.
He’s working on the next Star Trek series. Awesome!

ANNOUNCING THE “DON’T YOU HATE BOOK TOURS?” Book Tour!

Shhhh! While the ghost of Mark Twain is distracting Alex by introducing him to the Borg Queen again, I sneaked into his blog.
If you hear the sounds of drills and screams, don’t worry. Alex will play the guitar much better with steel fingers.
Yes, I am on a book blog tour. Wow. That’s a lot of groans out there.
Yeah, book tours are like speeches by presidential candidates: same old words over and over, too long, boring, and worse … NO SEX!
Well, my “DON’T YOU HATE BOOK TOURS” Book Tour takes care of all that.
Each post on a tour should be different from the last. Haven’t you visited a favorite blog only to groan when you see it has the same hype from the latest book you saw in the last 4 blogs?
A tour post should be like a good movie trailer: chaotic with new images of the story that teases without giving away the plot … and HAS SEX IN IT!
Oh, the SEX in this post? Hey, I’m hawking a prose book here not PLAYBOY. Aw, man, even PLAYBOY doesn’t have nudity anymore.
Is nothing sacred?
Here is a trailer flash mental image for you just like in a salacious, ah, great movie trailer – and all from one line of dialogue!
“Clemens, before I eviscerate you, explain why your hand is on the inside of my naked thigh!”
Yep, that line and scene is in my book.
What book? Hey, remember when I talked about teasing?
This book about to come out in paperback:

Abraham Lincoln and a vampiric Benjamin Franklin, among others, out to kill a good man on his honeymoon with the most evil female on this planet in 1867.
Board the first air/steamship, XANADU, as it sails the world’s skies over more troubled water than even Simon & Garfunkle could handle.

Did I mention there was SEX in it? Hey, it’s a honeymoon.

Here’s a bit of the soundtrack:
Two Steps From Hell - Big Sky

Monday Music Moves Me

Hosted by Xmas Dolly.

I’m still hooked on Dream Theater’s latest, The Astonishing. So here is one of the songs that moves me, The Gift of Music.

March Movie Preview

Here are the upcoming theatrical releases for March! As always, descriptions courtesy of the IMDB. Snarky comments by me.

4 -

Zootopia
In a city of anthropomorphic animals, a fugitive con artist fox and a rookie bunny cop must work together to uncover a conspiracy.
Directors: Byron Howard | Rich Moore | Jared Bush
Stars: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Jenny Slate
A fugitive fox and rookie bunny cop are also the new characters on the next CSI spinoff.

11 –

10 Cloverfield Lane
Waking up from a car accident, a young woman finds herself in the basement of a man who says he's saved her life from a chemical attack that has left the outside uninhabitable.
Director: Dan Trachtenberg
Stars: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, John Gallagher Jr., Mat Vairo
It’s a monster movie! It’s an abduction movie! It’s two great films in one. (Actually, I am excited to see this one.)

18 –

Miracles From Heaven
A young girl suffering from a rare digestive disorder finds herself miraculously cured after surviving a terrible accident. Based on the book 'Miracles From Heaven' by Christy Beam.
Director: Patricia Riggen
Stars: Jennifer Garner, Brighton Sharbino, Martin Henderson, John Carroll Lynch
Basically, a movie made for Christians that unfortunately every critic will hate.

25 –

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Fearing the actions of Superman are left unchecked, Batman takes on Superman, while the world wrestles with what kind of a hero it really needs. With Batman and Superman fighting each other, a new threat, Doomsday, is created by Lex Luthor. It's up to Superman and Batman to set aside their differences along with Wonder Woman to stop Lex Luthor and Doomsday from destroying Metropolis.
Director: Zack Snyder
Stars: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg
No snark, just lots and lots of excitement! LOTS of excitement and anticipation.

Think the Golden Schmoes (movie goers) got it right? Excited about a new Star Trek series? Think a good book tour should have sex in it? Picking up some new books? What movies do you want to see in March? And what did you think of the Oscars last night? (I didn’t make it to the end but I did see Fury Road clean up with six Oscars.)

See you Wednesday for the Insecure Writer’s Support Group!

Thanks for having me on your blog on this Leap Year 29th. I hope a few will take a chance on my Steampunk when it comes out in just a few days.

I am looking forward to Bats vs. Supes but more for CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. :-)

Roland D. Yeomans said...

I forgot to wish good luck and high sales to Tyrean Martinson, A. L. Brown, Tara Tyler, and Pat Hatt. Also I am really looking forward to Nicholas Meyer being involved with the new Star Trek as THE WRATH OF KHAN is my favorite original crew movie. :-)

Hi Alex - love Roland's soundtrack .. while his book will be an excellent read. Oscars - and Golden Schmoes ... I'm sure it's all right now - perhaps. Good luck to all new books out there ... I want to see Spotlight ... and particularly Good Luck to Roland and his launch .. cheers Hilary

Congrats Roland! Your book sounds fun. ^_^

As for sex in blog tours. It might work. Sex sells. ;-)

Happy Leap Day! So many new books every week. I am excited to read Tara's book. Congrat to Roland.

Yes, I am very excited about a new Star Trek TV series! I wonder what they're planning on doing with it. I re-watched Enterprise about 2 years ago, and although didn't like it when it was new, I really loved it the second time around years later! It has its flaws, but I love how the crew set out into the literal unknown galaxy just to explore it. So much easier to relate to for real people.

Natalie Aguirre said...

Congrats to Roland on his book!

Hmm, none of these March movies appeal. Hopefully some others will come out that I like. Will be interesting to see how they do Star Trek.

I definitely think sex should be part of any blog book tour. Sex sells! What fun that will be.

Truedessa said...

Good Morning,

First, I would like to congrats all the authors on their new book releases. Of course my favorite is Pat Hatt's but, I might be a bit biased.

Mad Max took home a few awards last night, I lost track of how many perhaps 6? Please correct me if I am wrong. Leonardo won for best actor in The Revenant and I so called that one. He did an amazing job and I'm not a big Leonardo fan but, the movie was powerful and he made the viewers feel the agony. While, I was watching the movie I actually had to close my eyes a few times as it seemed so real and raw. At that time I thought he will win and so he did.

I've been listening to a bit of Dream Theater it has a haunting feel to it which I enjoy.

Happy Monday and a leap year day! A mystical day be sure to look for the little nuances throughout the day. Signs will be there but, how many will notice?

Sandra Ulbrich Almazan said...

Congrats to everyone with new releases!

I haven't watched much Star Trek since Voyager. It would be nice to watch it again, though I don't know how I'd find the time for TV.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Happy to host you, Roland. And looking forward to that film as well.

Cathy, I've enjoyed several of the Star Trek series more the second time around.

Truedessa, I still need to watch The Revenant. Did think it was funny a bear was in the audience last night.

Sandra, I'll make time for a Star Trek series.

mshatch said...

Batman vs Superman VS Doomsday - I assume Wonder Woman will be the voice of reason...?

Shady Del Knight said...

Hi, Alex!

I saw Force Awakens and Jurassic World. My vote goes to the latter because me likey Bryce Dallas Howard. She could sit in front of a locked-down camera and recite the telephone directory for two hours and I'd pay to see it.

I long for a return to the good old days when there was nudity in Playboy. What happened to this once great country of ours?

Happy Monday, good buddy!

kaykuala said...

Congrats to Roland on his release! Of course sex sells and ought to be given space. At the Oscars congrats to DeCaprio after so many tries!

Nilanjana Bose said...

I have been wanting to watch the Revenant for ages, will have to now!

If sex is part of the book, then don't see why it shouldn't be part of the book tour, with appropriate warnings of course for people with delicate sensibilities.

Congrats to all authors with new releases. Roland Yeoman's book sounds like a really entertaining read..

M.J. Fifield said...

I've never heard of the Golden Schmoes. I did suffer through the Oscars last night, mostly to see what Chris Rock would do, and watch Leo get his Oscar. I was surprised that Mad Max won so many awards. I guess that means I should watch it. :)

Congrats to everyone with a new book out!

Christine Rains said...

Yes, book tours need to have more SEX! :) Congrats to Roland and everyone else with new releases. I watched The Walking Dead instead of the Oscars. Does that make me a rebel? Have a great Monday. I'm excited for Wednesday!

Bish Denham said...

Gak! Superheroes that don't get along? Like there isn't enough badness going on in the world they have to add super egos to the mix?

I really liked the song by Dream Theater.

Congratulations Roland! I hear you about book tours...

L.G. Keltner said...

I love the idea of the "Don't You Hate Book Tours?" book tour! Book tours should have more sex in them. What could it hurt? And that line? “Clemens, before I eviscerate you, explain why your hand is on the inside of my naked thigh!” Hee hee! I'm going to have that stuck in my head all day!

Ann Bennett said...

So many good stories, so little time. Your blog makes my mind spin with so much territory covered. I feel myself slowly creaky out of the seventies to the present. Now that could make a story too.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Marcy, probably!

Shady, that made me laugh!

Nilanjana, I still need to see it as well.

MJ, you should! Best reviewed movie of 2015.

Bish, that's because Dream Theater is awesome.

Ann, yes it could!

Madeline Mora-Summonte said...

Congrats to everyone with new releases!

Really looking forward to 10 Cloverfield Lane - the trailer looks awesome.

Didn't watch the Oscars, but finally saw ROOM - I liked the book better but the movie was well done. And yeh for the Best Actress win!

Mason Canyon said...

Congrats Roland, the book sounds intriguing and loved the trailer. Congrats to all the others with new releases. As for March movies,10 Cloverfield Lane sounds like it might be very interesting.

Pat Hatt said...

Hey, sex sells haha Congrats Roland.

Batman vs Superman will hopefully be great. 10 Cloverfield lane looks to be an interesting one indeed.

Thanks for the shout.

haha! well, as you know by now movies and me...well they don't mix. But I did watch the end of the Oscars to see Leo win, b/c I do think he's talented. Then, I turned the channel lol.

Huntress said...

@ Roland Whoa...uh, intriguing...uh yeah that's the word. and yes I WILL check it out, ahem, have a look-see.
Zootopia- Eh, I think I'll wait for it to come out on HBO. The last two movies in this genre, Inside Out and Frozen, failed me.

Jeremy [Retro] said...

... Ennio Morricone H8ful Eight! Mad Max... awesome and the blah Jurassic World. Roland is amazing in his writing, a great sense... of humor and more.

thank you, brother Alex for all the support and checking in!

I'm glad Fury Road won on both awards platforms. It was a great movie. I haven't watched the Oscars for years, just too frustrating. Roland's books sounds great and of course a good book tour should have sex in it just to keep it interesting. It's true that seeing the same blurb on several blogs gets old. Also many great books out this week. See ya Wednesday.

Rachna Chhabria said...

Hi Alex and Roland. Congratulations Roland, I'm sure your book will be an excellent read. I am looking forward to reading it :)

Jo said...

That was a pretty good start for a book tour.

I didn't see the Oscars, too boring any more except for the last part. I see Spotlight won. I had never even heard of it.

I was annoyed that Downton Abbey was preempted for the Oscars.

cleemckenzie said...

I can't believe Fury Road won like it did. I'm still shaking my head, but I'm not into dystopia, so I'm biased. Congrats to Tyrean, Pat, Roland and all the others. Books. Books. Books.

L. Diane Wolfe said...

Sex always sells, Roland.

I'm glad the Mad Max movie did so well last night.

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

Awards shows are on my 'most hated things on TV' list so I never watch them. I'm not sure what I think about the new Star Trek series. I hope they do a good job with it. I am excited about Batman vs Superman if only to see Henry Cavill in tights again.

Rawknrobyn.blogspot.com said...

Gotta applaud Roland for the line about a naked thigh. It's pretty darn awesome.
Have a great week, Alex.

Arlee Bird said...

Now I might have to go back and give the Mad Max movie another chance. I liked it but I was measuring it against the original Road Warriors which is one of my favorite films. A second look of the new one might be more fair since now I know what to expect from it.

I know Randy (drummer in hubby's band) is going to want to see this one. What a set up that guy has huh? Video was FAB! Thanks for joining us and your taste in music is impeccable. You so ROCK!

Joanne said...

congrats to your Fury Road and their Oscars. I can't fault the technical production. I was very happy for Spotlight - excellent flick. All in all, I thought the show was very boring.
Not boring - your book tour. Good luck - sounds hot and sexy.
March movies are not thrilling me - guess I'll have more time to garden and enjoy spring. Happy Leap Day.........

Dean K Miller said...

Didn't watch the Oscars...too much back slapping, padded by too much money spent in the wrong places.

Hope the new Star Trek Series is good. I'm an original Trekkie and haven't caught on with any of the later series. Fingers crossed.

Chrys Fey said...

The only movie I'm really interested in is Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

I watched bits and pieces of the Oscars. I did see the end, though.

Elizabeth Spann Craig said...

Sounds like an interesting book tour!

And 10 Cloverfield Lane sounds interesting, too. Might have to make a note of that one.

Anonymous said...

I will fully admit the main reason I want to see Zootopia is because of whatever small role Shakira has.

msmariah said...

Happy Leap Year Alex! Good luck on the blog book tour. I want to see all the movies on your list. I agree that with you on the Miracles movie. I don't understand why some people rake movies like that over the coals for being in the Christian genre. It's a particular genre that attracts a particular crowd, just like any other type of filmmaking.

I really want to see Cloverfield. The trailers look great. I will definitely see BvS, but I have a deep seated fear that I will be sorely disappointed.

Al Penwasser said...

Star Trek II is my favorite Star Trek movie. Star Trek VI was my second favorite movie (of the old Kirk/Spock series of movies). So, maybe the TV series won't be that much of a suckfest as I feared.
On a related note, the Enterprise is frikkin' destroyed in the next movie? They destroy the Enterprise again? Good grief.

Al Penwasser said...

Oh, forgot to mention, Batman v Superman inspired me to write a short Justice League post for the A-Z Challenge. I've put it on delay to publish on April 12th.

I can't wait to see the Superman movie. Wonder Woman is my hero.

I think blog book tours are a whole lot easier to handle than real book tours...I loved my "one big launch party and book signing" in my home town, but didn't schedule anything else. Online promotion works better for my personality.

Abraham Lincoln, vampire Ben Franklin, and a Simon and Garfunkel reference? Hubba hubba!

And not that I would have ever watched Zootopia anyway, but with all of the buzz it's getting from "furries", I especially have no desire to see it. I could very well end up in a theater sitting next to a grown-ass man in a full body fox costume.

Roland D. Yeomans said...

Thanks, Elizabeth. :-) Actually there is more laughter than sex in my book ... sort of like my dates actually.

Cherie: thanks.

msmariah: thanks, I will need luck and some sales might make my creditors smile, too.

Joanne: ah, the only steam is in the steampunk. :-) Just hi-jinks in low places.

Robyn: Mark Twain is always getting in trouble.

L. Diane: That is what the ghost of Mark Twain keeps telling me. :-)

Rachna: I hope you like it. It is available for sale now at the Createspace store: https://www.createspace.com/6106702

Same price for you, but a bit more money for me. It will help me pay for all the cigars the ghost of Mark Twain smokes in my apartment. Who knew ghosts smoked real cigars? :-)

Roland D. Yeomans said...

A Beer for the Shower: An insane, murderous Abraham Lincoln. And in-law problems, too: McCord's wife has a twin sister ... in love with him to boot. Ouch.

Shell Flower: at least each post of mine is different. :-)

Jeremy: looking forward to seeing you tomorrow -- so happy that life is turning around for you.

Huntress: my book also has beauty, flight, adventure, and laughter to it, too. so not to worry. :-)

Mason: thanks so much.

L.G.: Mark Twain provides the laughter like a kitten not understanding why everyone is so upset as it hangs from the top of the curtains.

Nilanjana: There is also laughter as well. And moments of tense adventure.

Hilary: Thanks for always supporting me.

Misha: I tried to make my book fun: one that a reader goes back and re-reads to live again the laughter and great lines ... sort of like LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Lee, it's The Road Warrior on acid.

Marie, hope he enjoys it! And thank you.

Joanne, it was a bit boring.

Chrys, too late for me to see it!

MsMariah, and to be fair, a Christian reviewer should review it.

Al, they just keep blowing up the ship!

Elizabeth, he'll like that!

Patricia, works better for me as well.

Brandon and Bryan, that would be terrifying...

Ugh! This is why I just about kill myself writing guest posts every time I have a book release/cover reveal. I know how I feel, trying to find something interesting to say when I've already said, "Nice cover" about 70,000 times! I'm surprised, too, when given the choice, that most bloggers now choose "Guest Post" when they're helping a writer out. Seems we all kinda know readers prefer to read a guest blog over just seeing the same old blurb.

I'm looking forward to the Harlem on the Hudson film festival in March, hosted by the film colony the next neighborhood over from mine. They'll be showing some classic films related to the Harlem Renaissance and some of the famous singers and other people from that time and place. I was at my local writers' group write-in last night instead of watching the Oscars, though I don't have a television anyway. I'm so out of the loop when it comes to modern actors and films, though I'm familiar with most of the big names.

Funny you'd mention a Doomsday character. Today happens to be Doomsday. Well, every Monday this year. (It's a calendar day-of-the-week calculation thing. This year 4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10, and 12/12 all fall on Monday.)

I think the Golden Schmoes got it right. Ben Franklin is a vampire? when is the movie?? I want to see Zootopia and Batman film even though Ben AFFLECK IS batman. I can't see anyone else but Christian Bale in the role. I watched the Oscars and thought they were really good. Except for the Girl Guid cookies which sucked, the rest was funny. I loved seeing Tracy Morgan dresses like the Danish Girl and say"I'm a Danish Girl." that wa too funny. I was surprised the Revenant didn't win Best Picture. huge surprise the Sly Stallone did not win. I will post my Oscar stuff a bit later

Tyrean: I'm glad you got a smile or two from my post. :-)

Congrats to everybody on the new releases!
Roland's comments put a smile on my dial. The book sounds like fun.
I always love picking up new books!! If I had my way, I'd do so everyday.

Denise: I am trying to be a gracious visitor and leave my friends laughing. :-)

Michelle: I am prejudiced enough to think my book would be fun for you. The ghost of Mark Twain is sure of it! :-) Thanks for liking my post.

I didn't watch the Oscars last night, was busy with work....oh, and I still need to work on my Wed IWSG post...thanks for the reminder. =)

Yeah, blog tours where the same post or information is posted over and over can be very dull and actually put me off a book. Those which are different each time are far more interesting - and don't we want to interest our readers?

Carrie-Anne, cool that's so close to you.

Cathrina, probably a good idea to skip.

Beverly, good for you!

Faraway, glad to have you back with the IWSG!

Angela, you're welcome!

Liz, didn't know that!

Tyrean, you're welcome.

Denise, I was excited!

Patsy, yes we do.

Wow-yesterday leaped right over me. I didn't get to see the Oscars but had to smile at Fury Road getting six. Blog tours do get monotone-so nice change. Congrats to all releases! Guess that means more books for March :)

Zootopia looks cute. I imagine we'll end up seeing Batman VS Superman.

Laughed at the book tour post. The author sounds like a real zany, creative person. Enjoyed listening to the sound track while reading. I'd like to take my g-daughter to Zootopia--good excuse for me to go!

Lots of exciting new books and movies! The author book tour has a hilarious title! Best of luck to Roland!

10 Cloverfield Lane looks like a thriller- yikes!

J Q: If you laughed and enjoyed the sound track while you read, then I am doubly pleased! "Zany" has gotten me through many a dark day! :-)

DMS: Thanks. I wanted to name my tour something that would stand out.

Congrats to everyone with new books coming out! Haven't been to the movies in months, but at least I'll have some time off over Easter and can maybe catch a few. Zootopia, for sure. (I wish it wasn't so early this year, as I'll still be struggling with A to Z posts!)

Congratulations, Roland! No doubt Not-So-Innocents Abroad is a fun and fine book, just like your others. I will gladly check it out, and I hope it reaches bestsellerdom.

Gotta say, didn't know Twain could be so racy...

Helena: As a younger man, Samuel Clemens was quite the ladies man. But if you can believe it, that "thigh" incident was born of his sense of humor! I share your hope about that bestsellerdom! :-)

I definitely wouldn't mind seeing 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Love your soundtrack choice, Roland.

It is so great to see all the new publications so far this year. Many congratulations to everyone!

I absolutely love the soundtrack Roland - especially the build up and the introduction of the choral voices. My type of music :) Best of luck and congratulations!

Jurrasic World was overrted? Really? Well, what do I know, I never even went to see it though I really, really wanted to.

I am VERY looking forward to the next Star Trek. Not so keen on it being an All Access to receive it. Perhaps that will change by 2017 or there will be some kind of a free option to watch.

The Gift of Music - A very well done song. It was most enjoyable to listen to.

10 Cloverfield Lane sound like a great thriller to watch. I'll likely not go see it. I think I need a movie partner. I hate going to the theatre alone.

Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. I'm VERY excited to see this. I'm positive I'll go see this. But then again I still have not seen the Winter Soldier or Age of Ultron yet. Go figure.
But DC is my favourite and I make sure I watch all the films they come out with. I even liked the Green Lantern one, though there were a few things I would have changed.

I'm yet to catch up with any Star Wars movie! It should be interesting to see the series.

Thanks for sharing with us.

I love the whole premise of this post, Alex.

Congrats to all the authors who actually finish and publish their work! No small thing, to be sure.

My oldest son loves Dream Theater...or I'm not paying attention and he means someone else. Both options are possible.

Lynda: Thanks. I write movies in my head when I write!

Nicola: I write my novels with mini-operas going on in my head. I'm glad you liked my soundtrack. :-)
