The A to Z Challenge List Opens! Plus David Powers King and Zombies, RiffTrax, Baroness-Purple Review, New Book Releases, and Ninja News

A lot happening today, including sign-ups for the 2016 A to Z Challenge!

But first, David Powers King is here to talk zombies with you.

The Wild and Varied World of Zombies

Thanks for having me, Alex! I think something needs to be said about what has become of the zombie state of things. There’s so many different kinds of ghouls nowadays that it’s hard to keep track of them all. I mean, the mindless monsters got their start with voodoo magic, but the people under that spell weren’t actually dead. Still, the idea spawned into a new kind of creature when George Romero combined the voodoo zombie with vampires in Night of the Living Dead.

Since then, we’ve had all kind of interesting freaks! Resident Evil brought us mutating zombies, 28 Days Later brought us the Rage zombie, and The Last of Us gave us fungal, bat-like zombies (no wings, though—maybe it’s time to give zombies their wings!). Thanks to The Walking Dead, zombies are now more mainstream than ever, and it’s picking up new fans. What kind of zombie have I produced in The Undead Road? You’re invited to learn more about Vectors on Amazon, where you can find the ebook free on KindleUnlimited. It’s also available now as a paperback!

Thanks again for having me, Alex. Be safe out there, my friends!

RiffTrax!

RiffTrax is rebroadcasting one of its films from last year, The Room, this Thursday night! Check the site for details and for a theater near you.
It’s supposed to be one of the worst films ever, and since I missed this one last year, I’m looking forward to seeing the guys destroy it with snarky humor.

Album Review

Baroness – Purple
This album came out in 2015. This band had fallen off the radar for me until I read an article about a bus accident…
The tour bus was between two English towns when it left the road and fell thirty feet. Two of the members fractured their vertebrae and were forced to leave the band.
The lead singer used his lengthy rehab time to rededicate himself to this album, and the results are amazing.
They’ve compacted their work – it’s less prog and more just great rock songs. The sound is stripped down, and every song is accessible and catchy as hell. I can’t pick a favorite because it changes from listen to listen.
One of the best rock albums I’ve heard in a long time. Highly recommended!

The Thing That Turned Me Anthology

Due out later this year, this anthology is about turning points and those things in life that motivate us to change. You can find a list of contributing authors at Stay Classy Publishing.

And yes! I am one of the contributing authors. I decided to go back, before CassaStar, and write about a turning point in Byron’s early life. So, if you enjoyed my Cassa series, you’ll get a chance to revisit…

A to Z List opens!

Welcome to the seventh annual A to Z Blogging Challenge!

Please read and follow the sign-up instructions outlined below so you sign onto the list correctly!
The brainchild of Arlee Bird, at Tossing it Out, the A to Z Challenge is posting every day in April except Sundays (we get those off for good behavior.) And since there are 26 days, that matches the 26 letters of the alphabet. On April 1, blog about something that begins with the letter “A.” April 2 is “B,” April 4 is “C,” and so on. You can use a theme for the month or go random – just as long as it matches the letter of the alphabet for the day.

The A to Z Challenge is a great way to get into the blogging habit and make new friends. For more details and its history, go HERE

We recommend short posts, turn off Word Verification, and visit five blogs (or more) a day beginning with the one after yours on the list.

Blogs must be on an open platform – no Tumblr, Facebook, Pinterest, etc. – and comments enabled. Please make it easy for visitors to comment on your blog.

To streamline legitimate blogs from advertisement blogs, the Co-Hosts will be visiting each blog on this list throughout the Challenge. Once the Challenge begins, blogs showing no activity or those that miss five days in a row will be removed.

Please note your blog name and number in all correspondences. Remember that as blogs are removed, your number WILL change.

There are categories for those looking for like-minded blogs. Select ONE category code and enter it after your blog’s title/name. The code applies to your blog, not your theme for the Challenge and is purely optional. See the first few blogs on the list for examples. However, if your blog has adult content, you MUST mark it (AC) or it will be removed from the list. Codes are as follows:

ANIMALS: (AN)
BOOKS/REVIEWS: (BO)
CRAFTS/ART: (CT)
CULINARY: (CU)
EDUCATION/SCIENCE: (ES)
ENTERTAINMENT: (ET)
GAMING: (GA)

Excellent post Alex, just signed for ISWG NEWSLETTER and A to Z Challenge. our 7th year Alex. Where has the time gone?
Yvonne.

Truedessa said...

Good Morning,

I have read Woven and it was a great book. Sorry to say I never really got into the zombie thing. I have not seen any of the RiffTrax movies but, it does sound like it would be amusing.

I have not heard of this music, sounds like a NDE has brought about a new change in the journey. So sad, to hear of this happening.

I am a romantic at heart so I will def check out the link. I even coined my own word for this phenomenon.

Have a great week!

Mason Canyon said...

Congrats to David and all the other authors who have new books out. Zombies are popular. Looking forward to seeing all the interesting post produced during the A to Z Challenge.

I am honored to be one of your minions. I am definitely going to listen to that album - what a dramatic story with that bus accident.

Sandra Ulbrich Almazan said...

Congrats on being part of the anthology!

I haven't decided yet if I'll do the A-Z Challenge this year. It depends on if I can come up with a theme.

H. R. Sinclair said...

Congrats David! I like zombies.

Elizabeth Spann Craig said...

Night of the Living Dead was a terrifying movie! David, it sounds like you've really researched the different types of zombies that are written. I was surprised to find how many types there were (slow-moving, fast-moving, superhuman, etc.)

A-Z time! The year flew by.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Hilary, glad you're with us!

Yvonne, can't believe this is Challenge number seven.

Truedessa, you would enjoy RiffTrax.

Rhonda, honored to have you as a Minion!

Sandra, I just came up with mine last week.

Christine Rains said...

It's definitely time zombies got their wings! Congrats to David! And congratulations to everyone releasing a book. I'm eager to see the new IWSG newsletter. Have a great week, Alex. :)

Wow-there is a ton going on today. Congrats to David and everyone else for their releases! I can't wait to see the IWSG newsletter...things keep getting better and better with that. I'm not sure about the A-Z yet. We'll see how things are going in a few weeks.

Madeline Mora-Summonte said...

Still not sure about A-Z, but I am ready for IWSG next week. :)

Jo said...

Morning, I have signed up although I am still not 100% sure. I guess I should have put CU by my blog but I wasn't sure how to do it. If you could oblige in your spare time Alex. I was staggered the list was so long already.

Charles Gramlich said...

I've been fidddlin' with a zombie story myself.

Chemist Ken said...

Congratulations to David on the new book.

As far as the A to Z challenge goes, I may finally join this year. The trick is finding the time and the dedication to complete the challenge.

Hart Johnson said...

That list is pretty darned long for having just opened this morning! Are we going to recommend starting with yourself and working down again, so more people get traffic? I think that worked pretty well.

Dianne K. Salerni said...

Congratulation, David! Love me some zombies. And thanks for the shout out, Alex!

I <3 zombies! Good luck to David. That's exciting that the A-Z list is up. Some great books coming out, too.

I can't believe it's already time to sign up for the A-Z challenge. I'll have to think about doing it with my gardening blog. It's been rough finding time to blog on a daily basis. There's just too much going on in my "real" world.

I'm looking forward to reading your contribution for the anthology. Should be good!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Jo, I can add that.

Ken, you can do it!

Dianne, you're welcome.

Deb, that made me chuckle.

Sherry, hope you can join us. And thanks!

Looking forward to A to Z!

Pat Hatt said...

Made me get up early to get up on top the list lol then I went back to bed. Thanks for the shout and congrats on the anthology too.

Gail said...

Never was a fan of zombies. The hoopla growing around The Walking Dead finally pulled me in, that and a couched day with a marathon hooked me and reeled me in. I don't even notice the zombies any more, they're just props for a great story line.

I believe I may have a fear of commitment. For two years I have considered the A to Z and have yet to sign up. I will enjoy reading others.

Chrys Fey said...

I've actually started a zombie story sort of inspired by the original zombies.

Yay for A-Z! You've got awesome Ninja Minions this year!

Hi, Alex!

The Undead Road: My Zombie Summer looks like an exciting new take on zombiekind. I love the tag line: "Nothing brings the family together like a zombie apocalypse…" (Bub says "Hello, Aunt Alicia!")

Would you believe I got up early this morning to put my name on the list? And since 6 a.m., the list has tripled. I wonder if you ever step back and look at what you've created and beam with pride? This is such a great community and it all can be traced back to you, even though I know others have had a hand in growing it, as well.

Hey Alex,

Gosh, I had to scroll way, way down all those folks with the bizarre obsession with the alphabet!

Good to see the legendary David featured on your site. His book sounds like an intriguing read.

Loads of links and thanks.

I might just, after all, satirise the A to Z, once again this year. Of course, if I do that, it ends up ironically promoting the weird alphabet craze. After that, all the folks involved with the A to Z will be so impressed with my satire that I get mentioned by the A to Z. What a wacky world of blogging!

All the best, good sir.

Wow, I don't think I've ever seen a blogathon so huge! I wish I had time to create an entry. Good luck! Hope you're doing well! I look forward to seeing your X-Files review.

Congrats on your story in The Thing That Turned Me Anthology! I'm excited about the IWSG newsletter and the A to Z Challenge! I will probably go sign up for the Lost and Found Blogfest only because Michael decided to involve it in the Question of the Month. I'm still trying to figure out what to write.

That is one heck of a sign-up list for the A to Z in such a short time! This event just keeps growing each year.

DPK's book is a great read, even if you're not all that into zombies. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Just look at all those people already signed up! WOOT! I'm really diggin the new badge for this year too. Congrats to David on his new book and everyone who has releases. Hope one day I'll finally get my book out.... :)

I know practically nothing about Zombies. Good thing I bought David's book!

I think I'm going to wait before signing up. I want to make sure that my schedule allows me consistency (in the process of getting a new job). That aside, I freaking love zombies. I couldn't tell you where it started since they terrified me as a kid but I rarely can get enough of the genre.

I'm not usually a big zombie fan, but David Powers King is such an awesome writer that I'm willing to give this one a try. I'm signed up for the IWSG newsletter . . . and I'm going low key with blogging this year, so despite loving blogfests and A to Z in particular, I'm going to sit back and enjoy it from the sidelines this time around. Best wishes to all who participate!

Yay for new books! (I finally read Diane K. Salerni's Eight Day book and loved it!)

Congrats to David, Susan, Pat and Dianne on their new releases!

Yay for all the wonderful new Ninja Minions you'll have to help you in April! :)

I'm Patrick, and I know of Alex by his reputation. The notes here evidently got a substantial response, which is great, because so many people are showing support. Owing to what's been said here, I believe I will sign up for the IWSG newsletter. I mostly know of IWSG by references to it in blogs. I have never looked into it closely, but I am becoming convinced it is something I would like. I am ready for Monday's blogfest, to see how that goes. Getting pointed in the direction of the blogfest, and also the WEP challenges, is helpful because I have an idea what specifically to read. I am not sure I have the strength as a blogger to join the A to Z challenge this year, but I am on board as a reader.

I am eager to read David's book. Felt nice to see him featured on your blog. Alex, you seem to be writing many short stories nowadays?

Congrats to David, Susan, Pat and Dianne on their new releases!

I've never been into The Walking Dead - maybe I need to read about zombies instead of watching them. David's cover is very striking.

Good luck to everyone signing up for the A-Z challenge - so many people already, awesome! I'm staying out of it this year, at the moment anyway :-)

Exciting to see David here. His book looks and sounds fantastic! I also noticed Diane and Pat's books- congrats to them too! I have two of Diane's books that I am hoping to start reading soon. I am way behind on my reading right now, but working to catch up!

Look at all the A-Z people! Awesome! I can't wait to see all the posts. :)

Those new releases sound enticing. A-Z is tempting, as i always enjoyed participating in the past, but have a busy month in April. Good luck everyone.

I've never been a huge fan of zombies, but the bit about winged zombies got me thinking. That might be something that could make me a bit more interested in them. ^_^

And best of luck to everyone doing the A to Z challenge. I see it every year and think there's no way I'd do that, but I catch some peoples' entries and it's nifty to see what they come up with.
