A to Z Challenge – E – Cult Classics: Eraserhead, Evil Dead II, ELO, Ender’s Game, and More! Plus Furious 7 Review and Last Hint – What Are the Kargrandes?

Today I have the honor of visiting Bob at Beauty in Ruins and taking over for him for E – Exploration!

A to Z Challenge – Cult Classics – E
Movies-Music-Sci-fi Book-Bloggers-Dragon Term

Movies –

Eraserhead
David Lynch’s first movie is horror at its most surrealistic. Shot in black and white and featuring disturbing, dream-like images, the film became a midnight movie staple. Released in 1977, it’s now preserved in the National Film Registry.

Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn
The first one gained director Sam Raimi attention, but this sequel/remake is over the top gory, funny, and memorable and was nominated for many awards.

Music –

ELO – Out of the Blue
This double album – and its ensuing tour with a spaceship as part of the stage – became their biggest hit ever. Released in 1977, it’s listed as one of the ‘1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.’

Science Fiction Book –

Ender’s Game – Orson Scott Card
This award-winning novel has become a staple of the generations of X and beyond, winning a Nebula and a Hugo.

Bloggers –

Eva Solar at Lilicasplace
Want to be inspired to overcome your challenges? Want to meet the most genuine and caring soul on the Internet? Someone who is both friend and sister? Eva is your gal!

Elephant’s Child
Want to enter another world? Want a beautiful view of the land down under? Want to meet one of the strongest women on the Internet? Then visit this child today!

Elsie at Mock Turtle Musings
Do you appreciate brutal honesty? Do you need to connect with someone who will inspire you with her conviction and devotion? If you need support, you won’t find anyone more amazing than Elsie.

Dragon of the Stars Term –

Energy –
It’s a hot commodity on Hyrath. Those with the sea kelp plants provide, and control, the energy that fuels the cities and towns. The only thing the plants don’t fuel are the space ships. Especially the Dragon…

Dragon of the Stars comes out April 7, 2015 – tomorrow!!! And there is a cool scavenger hunt planned, so don't miss it.

Check out the site What Are the Kargrandes? for clues as to how they tie into the story. Last clue posted today.

Movie Review – Furious 7

The seventh film in the franchise has Jason Statham as the bad guy seeking revenge for what Toretto’s gang did to his brother.
What can I say? It was a lot of fun with lots of laughs. Just leave your brain at the door.
The action and stunts are crazy and over the top. Don’t try jumping through three skyscrapers kids – you won’t live through it. However, it did make for an amazing sequence.
My only complaint is it could have been just a little shorter. (The film clocks in at 2:20.)
The ending was also a beautiful tribute to Paul Walker who died before filming was complete.
If you enjoyed the last two movies, you will enjoy this one. There are no surprises – you’ll get exactly what you expect. Fortunately, it’s awesome. Highly recommended!

Seen either movie? (Maybe at a midnight showing?) Fan of Ender’s Game? Any aother cult classics you can think of? Following those awesome ladies? Did you see Furious 7? And what do you think fuels the Dragon…?

Be sure to visit Bob at Beauty in Ruins!

Thank you so much for the shout-out. I feel I received it under false pretences though. I am a wimp.
For a change not only have I read the book but I also know, and love ELO.

I love the Evil Dead series, even the recent remake which lacked all of the humor from the original trilogy.

I only ever saw the very first Fast and the Furious movie, so I might hold off seeing 7 until I am caught up with the story and characters. From what I hear though, this movie serves as a way better tribute to Paul Walker than Brick Mansions.

Great post Alex, I wish you EXTRAORDINARY good luck with your new book. You deserve all the success I'm sure it is going to be.

I am not familiar with the films but I also wish good uck to anyone who has a book coming out soon.

Enjoy your Easter Monday.

Some great E choices! I'm a big horror fan so Evil Dead is a hit, but I've never watched Eraserhead. I don't know why. I've just never got around to it. This for the reminder.

Tomorrow is the big day. So exciting! Wishing you the best for the release, Alex.
Off to tweet then I'll pop by Bob's place.

I don't think I've heard of Eraserhead.
Looks like a cult though.

I'm exciting for your release too! YAY!

Natalie Aguirre said...

Congrats on your book release, Alex! Very excited for you. No, I haven't seen the movies. I did go see Cinderella yesterday. It was pretty good.

Elizabeth Spann Craig said...

Tomorrow is the big day!

Eraserhead...saw it in Film Studies class in college. It scared me! Just really nightmarish and I'm thinking I wasn't in the right frame of mind in my college years. I should revisit it.

Surprised that "Furious 7" clocked in that long!

Suzi said...

Eraserhead looks interesting. I've been watching more older horror movies these last few years, ones from 60s/70s. Some are interesting bu some are so slow, it pains me to watch them. I think a part of it is just being used to today's fast-paced world.

Nilanjana Bose said...

Exploration is just my kind of thing, especially on ruins. Going there just after this!

I must have watched the entire Furious series so far, dragged there by the males, I'm not much of a fan, but then family is family, have to stick together at all film-watching-popcorn binges :) No doubt I'll end up watching this one too.

Best,

Love Enders Game; everything about it, really, even the movie

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Elephant, you're welcome. You are no wimp though.

Michael, you do need to catch up. Amazing tribute to Walker.

TD, prepare for weirdness.

Thanks, Michelle!

Mina, watch it once.

Elizabeth, it will still seem nightmarish I think.

Suzi, Eraserhead is not fast, but it's like watching a twisted train wreck in slow motion.

Rhonda Albom said...

Have a fantastic day tomorrow. Seems as though it's taken forever to get here. BTW - I love ELO.

Eraserhead was one weird flick. Yay for the E ladies! :) I'm heading over to Bob's. Have a great week!

I've listened to ELO, but I don't think I've heard the entire album. I'm a bad representative of my generation.

Good luck with the release tomorrow!

Rhonda, and it will be over before I know it.

Sandra, that made me chuckle.

Donna, it was a beautiful tribute.

Ella, he had King's hair before King did. And I'll race you!

Marcy, that sounds about right!

Brandon and Bryan, the special effects might win an Oscar...

Thanks again, Bob!

Eraserhead, Evil Dead II... wonderful I remember seeing both, both changed my film choices. The day I stepped out of my box and realized there where more than just Star Wars...

I cannot wait to finally find out what the Kargrandes are.

My son watches Son's of Anarchy. I asked him if it was good. He said that it had violence. I said, I watch the Walking Dead. He says, Then you can watch Sons of Anarchy. HOWEVER, I don't like gory or violence--just for the record. Normally, I wouldn't watch anything violent or gory--scary yes, but TWD has stolen and ate my heart.

I'll check out the bloggers. Don't think I know them.

Pat Hatt said...

haha yeah, really have to check your brain at the door, as no way would it take 20 plus minutes for a government agency to intervene when a city was being blown up. But it was sure fun and a great tribute to Walker. Although they don't like to kill anyone anymore it seems. Not sure how "blank" survived the end or how "blank" is still alive, even if on life support, after the whole plane thing. Maybe they are setting up a future one to have all the bad guys join forces.

Bish Denham said...

Only one more day til we know what the Kargrandes are!

You know, I read Ender's Game and I wasn't all that impressed. Maybe it was the style of writing because I've liked other books by Orson Scott Card... but this didn't do it for me.

Pat, I was stunned either of them were alive. You're right - no way.

Bish, I thought it was good but very cold and impersonal.

Debra, my wife cried - be prepared.

Matthew, I decided to go for mor obscure.

Al, that ending was perfect.

Lee, exactly.

Shell, and it made a huge amount of money this weekend.
