A to Z Challenge – The Fifth Element and Force Ten – and How I Chose My Challenge Theme!

My theme for the A to Z Challenge is Favorite Movies, Bloggers, and Music! I’ll name a favorite movie that corresponds with the letter, and then select a character from the film. I will then name a favorite blogger who reminds me of that character, and then dedicate a song to him. (Also corresponding with the alphabet.) I’ll wrap it all up with trivia and/or fun facts about the movie, the blogger, or the music!

In addition, two lucky commenters this month will receive a review copy of CassaStorm!.One comment per day and each is worth one entry except – the first and one hundredth comments on each day will receive ten entries!

The Fifth Element

So many great lines! Mila Jovovich is hot and Bruce Willis is at his best. Chris Tucker – batshit crazy! It’s the perfect blend of science fiction and broad, over the top comedy. Can you say multi-pass?

Leeloo is the Fifth Element. She is the one who will save them all, and yet she is like an innocent child. She knows what she must do and will stop at nothing, but there is still a soft side. She is all strength and all woman.

Who is Leeloo?

LG Smith at Bards and Prophets!

She is NOT a woman I would cross! She’d kick my butt. She is all about empowerment. That is her strength. And yet, she possesses a very geeky side. Merged together, she is one powerful but caring woman. I’m honored to call her my friend.

LG is a writer and expert in the history of women warriors.

To you I dedicate Force Ten by Rush. Because you are a force and you are tough! (Song title links to YouTube.)

“Tough times demand tough talk, Demand tough hearts demand tough songs, Demand…”

Trivia and Facts:

Where does LG live?

On what album did the song Force Ten appear?

E’s trivia answers – Jay’s theme for the Challenge is the 80’s, and Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi have done nine feature length films together.

How my Theme Came Together!

I’m glad everyone is enjoying my theme this year. It's always to feature some of my blogger buddies, and every year I try to do something different. How did I end up with Favorite Movies-Blogger Buddies-Music? It started as one small idea…

I thought I’d list my favorite movies and then blogger buddies who reminded me of those films. So I made a list of blogger buddies (over sixty of you!) and then went through my movies, matching those up to the alphabet. Then I tried matching buddies to movies.

That didn’t seem to be working, so I decided to match to characters instead. I listed several characters for each film and went from there. Describe the movie, describe the character, describe the blogger buddy. Got it! Grab links to blogs. Easy.

Then I had a wild idea. How about a matching song? Yeah, I’ll select a song that matches each blogger buddy and find the video on YouTube for linkage. (Sounds cool now, but matching the song was harder than anticipated.) I finally finished and then...

Wait a minute! Trivia! I need trivia.

That’s where the theme rolled over into the over-ambitious and insane realm. Now I was looking for trivia and facts on either the movie, the blogger, or the band. Oh, and I still needed images. And I had to format all of the posts in html so I could just copy and paste. (Because with the Ninja News still running, I couldn’t preschedule any of my posts until the night before.)

Average time preparing each post – three hours or more.

Next year I’m posting the phone book!

Fan of The Fifth Element? Fan of LG’s? Fan of Rush – don’t answer if you’re not! Know the trivia answers? And how did you decide on your theme? Anyone else a little over-ambitious…?

I'm really loving the fact that I'm on Pacific time and have no social life. The combination makes it possible for me to be first here.

I think I'm connected with LG but will pay a visit to make sure.

Everyone's doing great with the challenge. I'm enjoying visiting, though I feel like I'm cheating.

Happy weekend.

I loved that film! The opera scene always amazes me each time I see it.

Fifth Element is one of my fave sci-fi movies. Bruce Willis rocked even though my B.W. fan dad won't like this movie because it's sci-fi. He enjoys the Die Hard movies though. Anyway it's nice that you showed us how your theme came together and the phone book? Ha! Good one Alex.

Most clever way of choosing your theme. I enjoyed the song. Well, I enjoyed all the post always something of interest here.

Enjoy your week-end.

Alex it fits you and your blog style. I'm a fan of both movies.

Alex, it is absolutely unbelievable how much work you have put into this challenge! It is great to read though, so believe that it has been worth it from a readers viewpoint, though I imagine the telephone directory might be easier!

Annalisa Crawford said...

Wow - three hours! I take that long sometimes, but every day for a month! And finally, you mention a film I've seen - although only once and a long time ago (Hubby has it on video somewhere, but we don't have a VCR in the house anymore)

VikLit said...

The thought you are having to put into these posts is astonishing! They're amazing.

Your trivia questions stump me many times. I guess I have to do more research.

Three hours is a lot, but you pack a lot into one post.

I'm still laughing at Robyn's comment! L.G. is tough as nails, but she's also very supportive and a lot of fun. She is certainly deserving of this honor, and I'm glad that she's the first woman on your list. Hope you get some rest on Sunday Alex. Thanks for a great kick-off week!

The 5th Element! Wow. Haven't thought of that movie in years. I bought it as soon as it came out on VHS. Pretty much wore it out.

I'm not nearly as ambitious as you, that's for sure! I chose my theme since I signed with JTP for my debut novel. I wanted to showcase their other works - many of which were written by my beta buds. Very excited to help promote some awesome writers AND who doesn't like a little inspiration in the form of famous quotes??

Can't wait for your phone book theme next year ;)

Fifth Element is so fun, and Chris Tucker is legendary in it. It's such a bummer we haven't been able to export his role elsewhere since.

My theme of world-building is treating me very well, both in amusing visitors in talking about elements of it, and in expressing the way my fictional world works in a different way than usual. I thought it would be more difficult to keep it going, which is why I chose it. So far, though, perhaps it's the encouragement of the A-to-Z crowd that makes it go 'round?

HI, Alex,

Well, as you know, my theme evolved from the intros I had created for blogger buddies cover reveals. Then it led to the actual books.

When Nicki Elson asked ME to do an exclusive reveal for her novel, I was beyond flattered. OF ALL the bloggers in the blogosphere who have THOUSANDS of followers, like you, Alex, she chose me.

I was thrilled to create her special intro and after that the A-Z buzz hit. Well I thought why not do this for my theme ... Create intros for other blogger buddies books and help them promote and feature them so other bloggers can get to know THEM...

After all. isn't that what this challenge is really about?

SO, Yes, it is ambitious. Creating intros that hold the attention of a reader and get them excited about the book I am featuring does lend to some pressure, BUT I am enjoying it!

Just think, I get to write in MULTIPLE genres and VOICES ... SO it's always FUN and CHALLENGING....

The effort that goes into your posts is truly appreciated, Alex :)

I love the 5th element, I love Rush, and I love well-done themes - cheers!

And speaking of themes, I'm super-ultra-n00b at A-to-Z, I didn't even realize it was etiquette to go read and comment (over 1000 blogs???), and I definitely didn't realize I was supposed to have a theme.

I was invited to participate directly by tweet from A-to-Z challenge, and that's about all I know lol.

Anyway, it's been going well, and though I didnt choose a theme, my posts all have a cohesion because my blog/business are UBER focused and only ever touch on the following:

Fresh Views On Taboos - Timeless wisdom in a pop package.

And so, even though I didn't choose a theme per se, I have one :)

That's my story ;)

Leelo is one of the greatest female characters ever made and LG is a no doubt extremely proud. You did a lot of work for these posts Alex!

Love the way Mila said "multi-pass." One of my favorite SF movies!

I didn't realize how much work you actually put into these posts. It seemed so much easier.

The Fifth Element is a kind of forgotten great movie.

The Fifth Element was bizarre to me, but I liked it. Chris Tucker just makes me laugh as soon as I look at him and I love Bruce Wilis, although my favorite of his movies is Die Hard.

My blog partner and I just kind of stumbled upon our theme. We decided to do a poll for our first post and Tamara decided that would be an easy and fun way to continue. I'm all about easy and fun-lol.

You will hate me-I love Gary Oldman and I think Bruce Willis is under-rated(seen 12 Monkeys??) but was not a fan of this film although interesting idea but did not dig her toilet paper outfit at the beginning. I am the only Canuck who does not like Rush at all-yup should not have commented but i just had to. Don't hate me:)

Jay, you are welcome! Glad some new people came to see you. And you are correct on all three counts.

Maurice, I wanted to make them special.

PTM, all an illusion...

Karen, you and Tamera picked a good one.

Birgit, won't hate you, but you are in trouble now!

I haven't seen the fifth element but sounds cool. It's good to see LG recognized. I'm commenting on my cell phone and its acting crazy. Hope this message makes sense.

I think three hours is nothing to prepare a proper post.
A lot of people do not know how much it takes to search all the input and then convert it into something interesting and readable.

I need around six hours for my weekly weekend post.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Ray, just wait until tomorrow!

Melissa, it makes sense.

Edi, I know yours take a long time. With six posts a week for me right now, It's about twenty hours to pull them together. Probably more!

Thanks Alex! I appreciate!

Rush, Drake, anyone reppin' Canada and doin' it big, I'm generally a huge fan :)

It helps that the 3 members of Rush were genius, spiritual, geniuses :)

Also, I forgot to answer your trivia, but I would've said Hold Your Fire, much like the other peeps here :)

Looks like you're rockin' your theme. Very cool to see. Enjoy and boogie boogie.

I really enjoyed The Fifth Element.

I never thought the Fifth Element would be so popular among the scifi community. It's not very scientifically accurate and it doesn't always make sense. But it's a fun movie and Milla was so cute in it

I adore "The Fifth Element" and L.G., whose humor, wit and charm are always a delight. My hubby likes Rush, does that count?
I'm too dumb for the trivia. Better luck for me next time. :-)

It was easy peasy choosing my theme of All Things Thrifting AND I have the good fortune of being the only thrifter (that I can tell) posting on this challenge.

My favorite part of the Fifth Element is the singing Diva section. Although Chris Tucker to this day elicits laughs. What a ham.

Impressive work you do, Alex. I want to congratulate you on having one of the best A to Z themes.

Chris Tucker was hilarious is the Fifth Element. I still watch it to this day and just laugh at him. Remember the buzzing noise he'd make when he waved people off? LOL!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Jason, you were correct!

Nigel, yes she was.

Lexa, good enough!

Mina, yes!

Thanks everyone! I really wanted my theme to be special this year.

I. Love. The Fifth Element! It's so underrated, especially in my family! They don't understand its awesomeness!!

"I protect you. Sleep." :D

I only have the 1st 3 Rush albums, and have only religiously listened to the 3rd...so I don't know. :( lol

another great pick. The Fifth Element is classic. The opera scene, no, Chris Tucker, no, Bruce's driving, the monster guys, just everything. It's new envy time I watch it. Must add it to the digital collection soon. Red2 loved it.

I adore the Fifth Element, and one of the few movies where I'm okay with Milla Jovovich's acting. A cracking sci-fi action :)
