Scare Me Blogfest

Hosted by my blogger buddy, Budd at SciFi Media - scary book, movie, story, or ghost you have encountered!

I’m going to give you both a scary movie and story!

I was in college when I went to see the original Nightmare on Elm Street with a friend. We went to a theater downtown and the area was packed, but fortunately the theater was not.

At the time, Nightmare on Elm Street was a fresh idea and very effective. The idea that Freddy could kill you in your dreams was a scary concept and the film very creepy.

The scariest part was when we walked out of the theater. The streets were deserted and there was a layer of mist covering the ground. Let’s just say my friend and I walked very quickly back to campus!

Visit SciFi Media for a list of other participants or to join in the scary fun!

The Big Announcement!

Many of you have already seen this. It involves Mark “The Madman” Koopmans, ”Marvelous” Morgan Shamy, Stephen “Breakthrough” Tremp, and David “Kingpin” Powers King. The big announcement…

A blogfest unlike ANYTHING you've seen before - it's more like an event! Full details November 19...

And how does the Ninja know? Ninjas have a way of finding out secrets. And with my army of clones, no one online is safe…

Enjoy the Rob Zombie song? Excited about the news? Ready for Halloween? (Can I have your Hot Tamales?) What’s the scariest movie/book/story in your life? And any idea what this blogfest is all about?

Don’t forget to visit Mary at the A to Z Blog!

Nightmare On Elm Street still freaks me out, but I love it!

You are such a tease Alex! So my guess about the blogfest is time travel....LOL! Hey you said it was unlike any other so the logical giveaway (since we are talking christmas time) here is too obvious. Happy H day!

Empty Nest Insider said...

I stayed up for the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT, and we won't find out any of the details until November 19?! Well I know it's going to be a great blogfest with all of the excellent hosts involved! And you did throw in a scary Halloween story too! Julie

mooderino said...

The first Nightmare was pretty scary, although I think there's something about dated fashion and hairstyles that lessens the fear over time.

Then again, there's a woman in an all yellow tartan pant suit in The Exorcist that still makes me scream to this day.

Nightmare on Elm street was real scary and so was your story, bet you hurried home that night!

Going to check out some of your links, happy halloween.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

You're welcome, Madman.

Siv, I do know a thing or two about teleportation.

Julie, scary story, just not a scary announcement.

Annalisa Crawford said...

The scariest thing I've ever watched is Silence of the Lambs, but that had much more to do with the jumpy blonde I was watching it with who kept grabbing my arm in the dark and making me jump! I have daft friends. I really don't like being scared, so I usually avoid the really scary stuff - I am a wimp. Your blogfest sounds intriguing - can't wait to hear more!

Jocelyn Rish said...

The camp plus genuine chills in the Nightmare movies put them on my list of favorites. Although I have to say I wasn't a fan of the recent remake.

Sheena-kay Graham said...

Nightmare on Elm Street's still a horror classic. Defintely wouldn't want to be you that night. Going to check out A-Z and you and your clones can have all the virtual hot tamales you can eat. Nice blogfest treats.

Unknown said...

Loved the Rob Zombie song! I have already had the rugrats knocking on the door trick or treating!
This blogfest is intriguing, looking forward to hearing more about it!

Gossip_Grl said...

Oh my remember the Elm St movie, most of it spent with my eyes closed. Just the title of the blog hop sounds like a great one! The scariest movie for me was the original Dawn of the Dead. It was many years ago and a double dating with another couple at the drive in theater. Happy Halloween Have a safe one!

Jess said...

Ooh I've heard the Nightmare on Elm Street was pretty scary, but I haven't ever seen it before.

I stopped by Stephen's blog yesterday, but he didn't give anything away about the new awesome blogfest! Darn… Can't wait till November 19th!

I remember being freaked out by Nightmare on Elm Street. ;) Very intrigued by the blogfest teaser...I already love the title of it. Happy Halloween Alex!

What? No MJ Thriller video for Halloween? Lol. Love the Rob Zombie one though.

I also love it when all the old movies play on tv during the time like It, Christine and Nightmare on Elm street.

Looking forward to the blogfest!

kjmckendry said...

I like the sound of the new blogfest. Can't wait to hear more.

I was always freaked out by Edgar Allan Poe's stories. So creepy.

Rick Daley said...

"Dragula" is one of my favorite work-our songs. Good choice!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Analisa, that would've driven me nuts!

Jocelyn, I didn't even watch it.

CM, you rock!

Gossip Girl, that must've been scary fun.

Jess, you'll have to wait.

Brinda, I do!

Kitty, hopefully you will like it.

Mina, MJ? Not a chance!

Cindy said...

I ended up watching that entire video. LOL...

Not sure how Halloween is going to go as our weather is not good.

Tonja said...

I wish I had a clone. The Shining is definitely my favorite scary movie.

Unknown said...

Okay, the picture alone for the Scare Me blogfest is enough to send me in the opposite direction! I don't do horror! (I don't like to see freaky images playing across my mind when I'm trying to fall asleep at night...)

The Big Announcement blogfest sounds exciting. Wish there were more details! Such a tease...

Anonymous said...

I'm excited to see what David, Mark and Stephen have up their little sleeves. Sounds like creative minds working overtime.

When I was in high school (giving my age away here) my girlfriend and I stupidly went to see Friday the 13th. We walked out. I'm definitely not a creepfest fan!

Unknown said...

Alan? Sorry, caught it. Must be an inside joke. :) Right?

Woke up and ran to the computer, to check the big news, and you're making us wait...for the rest of it...oh my goodness.

Freddy still creeps me out. At the moment, I'm singing, "One, two, Freddy's coming for you..."

Anonymous said...

Oops-- I forgot Morgan in that creative minds list.

LynnRush said...

I'm with you on the Nightmare on Elm Street thing. That movie FREAKED me out!!! I couldn't have watched it in the theatre for that same reason: walking out! LOL.

Laura Eno said...

Yay for Best of Friday Flash 2!
Nightmare on Elm Street is a classic scare...however, thinking of a clone army of ninjas might be even scarier... *shudder*

Anonymous said...

Forget walking very quickly; I would have been running back to campus. A deserted street and fog? Very creepy.

Unknown said...

Horror isn't my thing -- I hate the dark! Want to know more about that blogfest though.

Michelle Wallace said...

I don't watch horror movies or read horror stories... yeah, I know... I'm the scaredy cat...
On second thoughts, I remember watching that creepy movie (about a hundred years ago), with that girl who uses mind-power to burn down buildings... I think her name is the movie title? Or I may be mixing it up with something else. *sighs*

Cathy Olliffe-Webster said...

Thanks for the shout-out, Alex! You are very kind. Can't wait for the details on the Giving Back blogfest - you are a tease, aren't you!! Happy Hallowe'en!

I'll split the Hot Tamales with you; that's the best I can do.

Happy Halloween, Alex.

Cindy, well it is a great video.

Julie, no older than I!

Candilynn, it is an inside joke.

Laura, they would be an army of good clones though!

Michelle, Firestarter?

Cathy, you are welcome.

Louise said...

Nightmare on Elm Street was inspired (partially) by a film project done by college students in my home town, and the name was based on the actual Elm Street in our downtown. Yep, that's our claim to fame! Yet with all that, I've never seen it. I accidentally saw about five minutes of a horror film when I was a little kid, and it freaked me out so badly I had nightmares for years. I've steered clear of horror ever since. I even refused to watch The Birds with my sister when we were in college!

Hart Johnson said...

Oh yes--the original Nightmare on Elm Street WAS terrifying! I think it got a little ruined for me with later iterations, but you've reminded me how much it freaked me out, too. Terrifying concept.

Nick Wilford said...

Mist can be very scary... like in the movie The Fog.

Excited about the blogfest, I bet a lot of love will be involved!

Summer Ross said...

When I was a girl I would watch and rewatch Freddy- I own his movies and <3 them. My oldest daughter has begun watching the nightmare on elm streets. I could see how the idea is creepy- something out to get you through your dreams.

Charles Gramlich said...

I have to admit I generally liked Zombie's earlier music with the band, White Zombie. This is pretty good but not as good as much of that early killer stuff.

Julie Flanders said...

The suspense for the big November blogfest is killing me! Koopmans has been driving me nuts with it haha.

Nightmare on Elm Street scared me to no end. I still get a little creeped out by the "one two Freddy's coming for you" song.

Happy Halloween, Alex!

Budd said...

Hopefully there wasn't an alley way with a guy walking down it with really long arms. That movie was awesome. The remake, not so much.

msmariah said...

The original 'Nightmare on Elm Street' is also on my scariest list, but there were only so many I could fit. Johnny Depp being pulled into a bed of blood...scared the heck out of me. It truly was an original concept. It seems that so few modern movies have those.

Rachel Schieffelbein said...

They are certainly doing a good job of creating excitement for this blogfest! I can't wait 'til the 19th. :)

Gott love those Nighmare on Elm Street movies. Class Freddie Kruger. And Congrats! on winning the zombie swag. I'm not sure what that is but if its free then I;ll take two is my motto.

OMG. The Rob Zombie song definitely put me in a Halloween mood! Great vid.

And thanks so much for the mention, Alex!

Tyrean Martinson said...

Nightmare on Elm Street and Jaws both scared me badly when I was younger, and I saw both of them at home. I don't watch horror movies much anymore.
I'm excited about the blogfest, and I think it might be about giving to people in need - maybe . . .
You can have all our hot tamales if we could send them to you - my hubby can't eat fake cinnamon, and my kids and I can't eat corn syrup . . .my kids actually dress up for trick or treating just to be out there with all the other kids - plus we have an exchange policy in our house - corn syrup candy for chocolate.

farawayeyes said...

Ha, ha, ha, half the fun
of Rob Zombie is watching.

Never seen any 'Elm Street', I really don't like to be scared, like that.

You sure do know how to keep us comin' back.

Joylene Nowell Butler said...

The Skeleton Key was one of the scariest movies I've ever not watched the ending to. I snuck a peek and changed the channel. I'd watch Silence of the Lambs, The Blob, or Halloween, anytime before I'd ever watch TSK again. Hmm, wonder if it's because there are worse things than dying?

November 19th, yeah! I'm marking my calendar!

Unknown said...

Happy Halloween! Love me Rob Zombie, what a talent. My scariest flick is The Exorcist. Still packs a wallup on the scare factor for me. I do not watch alone. LOL

Marking my calendar for 11/19 and of course Dec. Right before my B-Day so I won't forget the dates. :)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Louise, that's really cool!

Nick, really hope so...

Charles, his stuff of the past couple years hasn't been as good.

Budd, that's why I skipped the remake.

MsMariah, you said it!

You bet Fire Flower - I mean, Stephen!

Liz, you're welcome.

Tyrean,I will get you a mailing address.

Faraway, it's a Ninja skill.

Nancy Thompson said...

Oh it's Halloween & I haven't even bought candy yet! Hmm, interesting party plans afoot. Gonna check that out. And yes, Nightmare on Elm Street is one of the scariest flicks I've ever seen, especially since the protagonist's name is Nancy Thompson!

Bossy Betty said...

Scary movies just freak me out too much. I can't even write out the titles. I can't. The big announcement is intriguing! More info, please!

Arlee Bird said...

I love the Nightmare movies because I'm a big dream fan. One of my scary movie experiences was when I went to see the original Night of the Living Dead at a drive-in in Tennessee. The drive home that night was spooky because it was through a rural area similar to the one depicted in the film. It's still one of my top horror film picks.

Happy Halloween!! And that is a scary story. Very spooky to come out of that movie theater to an empty street and mist.

Can't wait to hear the details on the blogfest!

Elizabeth Seckman said...

Yep, Nightmare on Elm Street freaked me out. How do you escape a murderer in your sleep?

mshatch said...

The two books that scared me most were Dracula and Interview with the vampire. The first probably because I was only 14 and it was the first really scary book I ever read. I went to sleep with the light on and my cross clutched in my hands for weeks! I read the second book in my twenties and I think the reason it scared me more was because it made 'evil' so seductive.

Rob Zombie, how appropriate! I remember when Nightmare on Elm Street first came out--I was in grade school! The original was a great movie.

M Pax said...

That is big news.

yay for Holly! Cathy and Liz, too.

Amityville Horror scared me. Mostly because when I was reading it, I looked up and saw these two red eyes staring in the window. Jodi Pig Eyes! I screamed my head off. OK, they were only tail lights, but they looked like Jodi Pig Eyes.

I'm going to watch Sinister at the movie theater today. My friend Lisa wanted to go. As I've gotten older, I've liked scary movies less and less mostly because I don't like to be scared. Oooh...I don't know if this is a good idea but one almost feels obligated to go and see a scary movie on Halloween.

Camille Picott said...

The scariest movie I ever saw was I Know What You Did Last Summer. I had to sleep with the light on for days! LOL

One of my scariest movie scenes is in Cocoon, when the woman steps out of her skin and becomes an alien. I don't know why my parents thought that were a good movie to take a kid my age to. I've always preferred the less is more approach of the classic silent and early sound horror films, which also managed to be more scarier and suggestive of horror without CGI.

So funny cuz I was thinking of Freddy Krueger earlier today and how freaky he was and the whole concept. Of course, not it seems pretty dumb, but you're so right about the time when it came out. Totally fresh and horrifying. The 80s was definitely a horror film decade. So much fun!!

Susan Oloier said...

Congratulations to Cathy!!! That makes me so happy.

Camille, you'll find out and hope it doesn't disappoint.

Come on, guys, tell me! Nancy told me I will love it and I will trust her. It must be something excellent and a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Hi, Alex,

Happy Halloween...

No, I don't know a thing about what those four are up to ... I wish I did.

Mark teased me about it during their fairytale blogfest...

The scariest movie I went to see was the ORIGINAL HALLOWEEN ... It was terrifying because it dealt with real life... nothing paranormal in those days. Very Hitchcock's Psychoish.... freaked me out for weeks.

I hope you had a fun Halloween.

Shannon Lawrence said...

If I'd had any hot tamales, you'd be welcome to them. Though I must say that I lived on Snickers and Hot Tamales when I worked at a theater, because they were the two cheapest candy bars, and the only alternatives to popcorn, pretzels and nachos when I needed some food on a long shift. Snickers was the most satisfying, though, because that's just what it does. The commercials said so.

Forgot to say that I had a similar experience to your Nightmare on Elm Street one. For me, it was The Birds. We had just watched it in class (after having read the original short story by...Daphne DuMaurier or some such??). It was fall. My friend and I walked out of the building to go across the quad to a different set of classes and there were birds. Everywhere. There was this steady noise, just like in the movie, as they all talked to each other. They were on the ground, perched above us on the building and walkway coverings, on the benches, in the trees. Oh, it was spectacular! And incredibly creepy. We walked VERY quickly to the next building.

I remember going to see Nightmare on Elm street when it first came out as well, it frightened the bloody life out of me! I saw it again a couple of months ago and was very surprised at how tame it was compared to some of the stuff that's out nowadays! And you gotta love Rod Zombie!!

I agree, when it first released Nightmare on Elm Street had a unique and scary concept! Am really intrigued by this exciting new blogfest. Dare I venture to guess that it has something to do with giving rather than receiving, in the spirit of the coming holidays? Will have to keep an eye out for the sign-ups and more details!

Jess, I remember that movie!

Deniz, good timing.

Chuck, that would've come in second for me. Still a creepy film. And I laughed when I saw your post on Monday - great minds do think alike!

Gary, thanks for jamming along. And who doesn't hate clocks?

Roland, there just might be something deeper behind what you just said... And I won????

Nicole, that's the best way to describe it.

Heather, why? Where were you when it came out?

Jai, glad you weren't with me that night then!

Hey Michael! I don't think Halloween creeped me out as much. Maybe I was too busy watching Jamie Lee Curtis...

Shannon, that IS what the commercials say! And that would be a freaky experience with all of those birds.

Jamie, knew you'd like it. And Session 9 - awesome movie!

Ray, I'm sure I'd laugh at it now.

JC, it might!

You're going to kill us with suspense.

When I saw Nightmare on Elm Street in the theater, the film broke halfway through. In the couple minutes it took to fix it, no one made a sound. Everyone was too scared to speak. It was so weird.

Sounds like the blogfest will be quite an event. Looking forward to the details!

Ooooh this BIG EVENT sounds awesome!

The first scary movie I remember seeing was The Incredible Shrinking Man. I was about 8. Gave me nightmares, particularly at the end when he's fighting off a tarantula with a straight pin, then *poof* winks out of existence. For years after I thought if I went through a fog I'd start to shrink. A most impressionable mind and probably one of the main reasons I don't do horror.

Hope you had a great Halloween!

The December blogfest sounds so intriguing. Can't wait to learn more. Will it involve somehow getting another hour in the day to finish all my stuff?

Libby said...

So intrigued to find out what that blogfest is all about!

That's the only Rob Zombie tune I'm familiar with -- and I've had it on my iPod for years. It sure gets my undead blood pumping.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Diane, I can believe it.

Bish, you should write a book about shrinking fog.

Jay, better make that a hundred hours for me.

Milo, yes it does!

Certainly there are times in my life that are more terrifying than the video and film. I usually involves psychological terror.

The first Saw movie was pretty scary and so was Candyman.

You are truly the master ninja!

Did you know that I don't like scary movies...and you are one brave soul for seeing them at the theater. It would be ten times worse!

Maurice Mitchell said...

Cool blogfest Alex. Knowing you I'm sure it involves giving back to other bloggers or charity.

Elana Johnson said...

Man, I am so not into horror. The scariest movie I've seen is The Ring -- like 20 years ago, and I still freak out about it sometimes. So yeah. Weak stomach here.

Can't wait to find out about the blogfest!

dolorah said...

Love, love Rob Zombie. And the original Nightmare On Elm Street was one of the scariest movies I ever saw. Like Halloween though, it loses much with all the sequels.

Ah, Nightmare... I watched this movie with my brother and from then on we went and saw all of them at the cimema together (the movies wasn't something we usually did together).

I love that Rob Zombie song.

I can't wait to see full details about the blogfest.

Nightmare on Elm Street was horrifying when I was a kid. As an adult it doesn't scare me too much.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Jennifer, I won't let you forget!

Tammy, I'll have to read it.

Kelly, you rock!

Melanie, I dig horror films.

Maurice, you will find out in two weeks.

Elana, that was a creepy movie.

Donna, you rock!

Lynda, but a good chance to bond with your brothers.

Medeia, you rock!
