My theme for the Challenge? I’ll get to that in a minute…
First, it’s the Sad Songs Blogfest, hosted by Spunk on a Stick’s Tips
Disappear by Dream Theater from Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Song tells the unbelievably sad tale of a man sitting by his wife’s bed as she passes away. Song almost guaranteed to make me cry every time. (And I never want to be in that position. My wife is in big trouble if she dies first.)
After Me by Marillion from Season’s End
Song takes you to the depths of heartache before the uplifting ending. Saddest line – “There’s a stray dog she feeds that she found in the street and he loves her to hold him but he won’t let her keep him. And he claws at the door to be let out at night and she makes do without him and she worries about him.”
Collapse the Light into Earth by Porcupine Tree from In Absentia
It’s a song about someone who’s gone through a very traumatic event. It’s a metaphor for a breakup. The poor man sings about how the light has collapsed in the spot where his lover should be.
Losing it by Rush from Signals
The saddest song about aging you will ever hear. “The writer stares with glassy eyes, defies the empty page, his beard is white, his face is lined, and streaked with tears of rage. Thirty years ago, how the words would flow, with passion and precision, but now his mind is dark and dull, by sickness and indecision, and he stares out the kitchen door, where the sun will rise no more.”
Now, my theme for the Challenge!
Last year, my theme was featuring blogger buddies whose blog title corresponded with the letter of the alphabet. Everyone really seemed to enjoy it so I decided to put a little twist on it this year.
My theme – I have selected a word for each day and will present to you blogger buddies who fit that description, along with movies, music, etc. My theme is to give back, highlight some awesome bloggers, and have fun in the process.
The only downside is that I have a lot of blogger buddies. (Note sidebar which is still missing some blogs.) I won’t be able to mention everyone, but I will try to highlight some cool people.
I’ll also be posting short bits of Ninja News, so if you have anything exciting happen, new book release, anything – leave a comment and I’ll mention it the next day.
So, you never know who I will be highlighting on a given day!
Oh yeah, and I’ll be announcing my next solo Blogfest during the Challenge (first one since Worst Movies Ever – whoa!) and it’s really going to surprise you.
Any questions about the A to Z Challenge? Any sad songs on your list? Want to guess what my next blogfest will be? Do you like my theme for the Challenge? Care to share your theme? I’ve been hearing about some good ones…

Sounds like you've got all your ducks in a row, Mister Ninja! Best of luck with the challenge. In the best spirit of "ducks" I do believe I'll be winging it.
Never realized how sad the Rush song is. Substitute woman for man and subtract a bit of the facial hair and you've got moi. And how sad is that?
Good songs of your choice for the sad songs.
All set for the A to Z.
Would your next blogfest be about Danny Boy? well I only asked.
Yvonne.
I also have a theme but I ADORE yours. I'm so excited!
oh fun theme! Guess what? I'm in! Can't wait:)
That's a cool theme. I've not heard those songs but the lyrics to the last one are pretty amazing. Will have to check it out :)
I'm an A whole
Lot of fun if I'm mentioned.
(Taken from the 2012 edition of "why grammer and line spacing options is realy important")
Is it bad that I've never heard any of those songs before? :(
Looking forward to your A-Z theme!
"Hurt" by Johnny Cash and also one of my funeral songs!
I don't know those songs. I'm going to look them up.
I'm also going to mention some bloggers' books for A-Z. I'm going to blog about books, writing, and music I listen to while writing.
Have a great weekend.
Nice that you're highlighting fellow bloggers! Hmmm...wonder what the surprise blogfest will be! I think I've followed all of the rules except one - my first A story is longer than most, but hopefully that won't put people off. Good luck everyone!
Love your theme. What could mine be? Help, hehe :)
I'm stoked for this! I've already scheduled the first week's posts. I'll be traveling in London and Oxford that week so I want to have a backup in case I get distracted. :-)
I'll still have plenty of time to visit all sorts of cool blogs, though!
Lsoing It seems to me, the saddest.
That's a great theme - I'm looking forward to reading it!
I've never heard of any of those songs!
Busy busy busy. My theme is still undecided, I'll settle on something by tonight I guess. Your theme sounds pretty cool...and challenging.
Sounds like an awesome month. Even though I'm not part of the A-Z challenge I'll be checking in when I can.
I don't know any of your songs! I'm going to have to check them out!
Sounds like a great plan for A to Z. It's going to be *crazynutstotalmayhem* a blast.
Saddest song? No question about it. "My Immortal" by Evanescence.
Cathy, you'll have to listen to it again.
Yvonne, no, but he might be on your list!
Thanks, Lass!
Katie, I saw your name on the list - very cool.
Anna, you'll like it.
Mark, you'll have to check back, but don't think you'd fall under A!
Kyra, they're all rock songs, so no.
Lurker, funeral would be appropriate time.
Medeia, that sounds good!
Lisa, I'll still read it.
Oceangirl, thanks.
Sean, that's good.
Gail, it's a sad one.
Annalisa, that's all right.
Rusty, narrowing it down was the real challenge.
Natalie, it will be a super cool month.
Huntress, that's a good one.
I don't know some of the songs on your list! (off to google them now)
Love love you theme for the A-Z!
Wow, you're one organized guy! And I love your idea of paying back. It's a pity I'm still very, very busy with the move and can't even think of participating!
Good luck and have fun!
Aw, that's a great theme, Alex! :) And those are good tips for any time of the year.
That's a good theme for the A to Z.
I'll have to go back and listen to that Porcupine Tree song again.
Love your theme for the A to Z. I was hoping to do something similar, but other blog obligations have come up. I figure I'll take care of those--like promoting a friend's book deal, a blog tour--and stick to my theme for the rest.
I'm going with: What I've Learned About XXXX (depending on the letter).
awweeee-man that is what i was going to do. now it's going to look like i copied you or the other way around.
kidding... that is a great idea and that is why you are the ninja.
sad songs from rush is... nobody's hero. i got a late start with the group, though i am still getting caught up...
great day!
jeremy
Argh, Blogger's being a bugger. My ??? attempt...
I haven't heard of most of your songs, but I love your descriptions of them, and their titles - especially Collapse the Light into Earth. I'll have to check 'em out.
Now that's an exciting theme! Things have gotten crazy busy so I'm glad I didn't sign up now. But I will be reading. Keep up the awesomeness Alex! :)
Sorry to say I did not know a single song but then you are a head banger and I'm a blues girl. Maybe we should write a head banging blues song? :)
Jules @ Trying To Get Over The Rainbow
This is my first attempt at the A to Z blog challenge, so no theme. But I did have fun rummaging through my house to find famous brands starting with each letter of the alphabet. I'll be posting them as a pictorial guessing game.
Doh, I almost missed out. I thought I had already signed up, but I didn't. I've since rectified that and I'm ready to go now.
Love your theme! I couldn't seem to find my groove this year until I decided to explore "Creativity" every day . . .I haven't finished writing it all out yet, so we'll see how it goes. Plan to visit as many blogs as possible and make new friends!
My favorite sad song is "Tears in Heaven"
I need to get off my lazy ass and actually participate in the A-Z challenge. Wish me luck!
What a nice theme Alex! Your Ninja name is well earned with all the plans you have... See you Sunday:)
I'm super-excited about the Challenge! It sounds great! I admire you for the fact that you never get tired of highlighting other bloggers. I don't know how you do it, but it's great, and shows what an incredible person you are. :)
Great songs - and I LOVE the theme for your A-Z.
That is a great theme! I like how you are using the challenge to highlight other bloggers. I can't wait to see who you recommend!
Uh, some of us (not me of course) have problems following rules. :/
I do like the idea that everyone on the list will be read, not just the ones at the top of the list.
Your A-Z theme sounds like a super one, but I now feel officially old. (sigh) Not only am I unfamiliar with all of the songs you've selected, but I don't know the artists, either.
Thanks, Juliana.
Shari, that sounds good!
Jeremy, can't fall behind on your Rush now!
Cate, at Blogger is better now.
David we'll miss you.
Rick, you can do it.
Karen, I'm sorry!
George, thank you.
Jeremy, you'll have to keep checking...
Tonja, that was the idea!
I discovered some great blogs with your last year's theme (and heard about the A to Z challenge). I'm looking forward to reading this year's posts!
You are a good egg, Alex. Keep up the great work and Happy A to Z month.
I've actually never heard of those songs! Looking forward to the next blogfest!
Great idea for your theme! I'm looking forward to your posts, can't wait for Sunday and the start of the challenge. Have a great weekend!
I don't know any of your songs!
I just wanted to let you know that I plan to review your book but with A-Z coming up, I think it's best to just wait until may. Besides, if I post a review in May. Just an FYI.
I have done everything you suggested for the blog challenge on both blogs. I was able to put the banner up tooon the new blog. I couldn't get it to do right on the old one. Oh well! Great choice in music btw. Can't wait til Sunday!
Your sad songs don't immediately come to mind, but I'm familiar with the groups. From the descriptions they sound like good songs.
Your A to Z theme is a good one, especially as one of the co-hosts.
Will be interested in the next Blogfest.

Sad Songs Blogfests—Places I Remember
Wrote By Rote
An A to Z Co-host blog
Now that comments are working again, I can come back and say, yes, I picked a theme, but you saw that already. Nerd Shirt Power!!!
April is looking so busy. I'm not in the mood to think of sad songs today. My A-to-Z theme revolves around Pixar.
I haven't heard any of those! Shocking, I know.
Can't. Contain. Excitement!
OMGOSH!!!!!
A to Z is gonna freakin' rock! And I can't wait to see your bloggy buddies so I can follow them all!!!!
And another blogfest?? Gosh, I can't wait! :D
(PS: I did read your sad songs, and dude, I haven't heard any of those! Fail.)
I love your A to Z blogging theme, Alex. Its cool just like you. I am waiting eagerly to see what you have in store for all of us.
Delicious Dream Theater song.
I love your idea!! What a great way to feature some great blogs! So happy to be taking part in this challenge, really looking forward to getting into it, and discovering new blogs!
Yes, I like your A to Z theme! How fantastic of you to "give back" by highlighting awesome bloggers :-)
Loving the Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence pick. It crossed my mind for this blogfest.
Lots of cool infor today! As to your songs - None of the titles are jumping at me. I'd have to hear them to know if I've heard any of them!
I don't know these songs and that makes me sad. :)
Nice song choices.
Thanks for the reminders of the do's and dont's for the blogfest.
Haven't come across any of your sad songs before.
Elaine, that's good to know! I'd worried I was overloading everyone with yet more blogs to check out, but the response was really positive.
Just don't Whisk this egg, Whisk!
Clarissa, that is fine! Hope you enjoyed it.
KD, that's good!
Lee, as long as you know the bands.
Joshua, I think that theme rocks.
Michael, that's a good one.
Cassie, your enthusiasm just oozes off the page! And unless you are a big prog rock fan, it doesn't surprise me you haven't heard the songs.
Leovi, yes!
Angel, glad you're on board!
Emily, you're a Dream Theater fan? You rock!
Brinda, most people don't know these songs...
Thanks, everyone!!
Hahahaha. Thank you for the laugh. I won't. I promise.
I need to go listen to that first song - it's right in line with what I'm writing right now...
I love the theme you came up for on your challenge. That's fantastic. Oh, I can't wait to hear what the next blogfest will be.
Oh, I love Disappear! How could I have forgotten that one? I also liked Losing It.
Sia McKye OVER COFFEE
Those songs & words...no way I am hearing despite no hubby around to mope over('Bye bye bye' by NSync fits better) but have parents, I'll obviously outlive. ;(
Good luck to the A-Zers, will cheer from the sidelines.
Good theme 'giving back' is always nice, mighty curious about your latest blogfest.
I like your theme for the A to Z, Alex. And you made me curious about the upcoming Blogfest! Your blogfests are always so much fun.
Thank you for recommending a few songs. I need to add some new titles to my "music-to-write-to" list.
What a lovely theme - will be looking to you to meet some fab new people!
Lx
Dream Theater, Marillion and Rush -- fantastic, Al. One of my personal faves: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_UaSv604hM (appended only for the song.)
Looking forward to the unveiling of your personal blogfest!
Wonderful theme, Alex. It's just like you to want to give back and help others!
Great theme! Now I'm excited about your next blogfest :)
Happy Weekend!
Your next theme will revolve around which can spit farther, the camel or the llama.
That is a great theme for A to Z Challenge. Can't wait to see which great people you highlight. :-)
Your theme sounds great, I can't wait to read your posts!
Great theme for your challenge, Alex!
And I'm feeling sad with all the sad songs lists because I'm not cool enough to recognize the songs! Sigh. I need to get out more. Or stay in more. Or something...
Fabulous theme! I'll be doing one story throughout the month of the Challenge. I've been seeing such great themes everywhere. I'm very excited about this blogfest. :)
Tasha, that's cool. Well, not cool, as it's a sad moment.
Sia, you know those songs? You rock!!!
Angela, think you'll really like the next blogfest.
Suze, you rock as well!
Andrew, thanks for the laugh!
Elizabeth, don't worry, most people don't know the bands I like.
Thank you, guys!!
OK, Alex, you introduced me to some new bands. The only one I knew was Rush [grew up on the Canadian border, so Rush was huge in my town].
Great theme. I'm ready. Except for Y and Z. Maybe I'll pretend they don't exist... lol
A is for awesome - I'm sorry, I just can't stop! Seriously, really great theme! I can't wait to check out your posts :)
Great choice of songs! I love Dream Theater.
Looking forward to the A - Z challenge. Fab idea for your theme. Mine is nothing like as interesting as that :-)
Hi Alex
Good plan on the A - Z. I haven't heard the songs and now I must.
Nancy
Egads, those sad songs would make me slit my wrists
Oooo... next blogfest? I'm sure it will involve revealing your true identity! Or should I say "identities?" ;)
I've never heard these sad songs so I'm happy! LOL!!
Take care
x
Mary, they do exist! And if you grew up near Canada, Rush was required listening.
Thanks, Martha!
Denise, you are awesome then!!!
Charles, don't do that!
Morgan, you just want to make a statue.
All of these blogfests AND writing CassaStorm to boot. Are you sure you get any day job work done?
Desperately trying to keep my A-Z blogs short - argh - what a great theme to highlight other bloggers the whole month.
Well. I'm ashamed to admit I had to look up three of your songs. I knew the Rush one. Very good picks.
Great theme for A to Z! I can't wait to see what you come up with.
Another blogfest? I'm in!
HMG
I like your clever approach to the Challenge. Sending good thoughts to you and all my blog friends embarking on the A-Z.
xoRobyn
Sounds like a great theme and you already know mine. I knew the song by Rush. I can't wait to see what you've come up with now. :)
Glad you shared some of the lyrics of your sad songs. I don't think I know any of them. I'd include "Cat's in the Craddle" and "Leader of the Pack" from the classics list.
Your theme sounds intriguing, Alex, and matching bloggers to a word is even more so.
My theme combines two of my interests, and I've tried to dig out unique facts and trivia for each letter.
Should be fun.
I love your theme, Alex. For some reason I wasn't a blog follower before but I righted that wrong! This is my first time participating in the challenge so I don't have a theme (I'm hoping to make it all 26 days!) but I look forward to learning from y'all about the process.
That's an amazing theme! Sounds like a lot of work, but I've no doubt you can do it. Looking forward to seeing what your next blogfest will be.

Jeffrey, only when I have to!
Thanks, Claire.
Heather, you'll dig the blogfest.
Thank you, Robyn.
Jessica, if you know Rush, then you are cool!
Mary. those are classics.
DG, I bet it will be cool.
Jennifer, you'll be fine. I didn't have a theme the very first year.
Shannon, lots of searching, thinking, links, and images...
Thanks for the pre-game pep talk, Alex. Can't believe Sunday is sooo close.
Wow. Your blog is like, more popular than most best-selling authors. That's really awesome.
I'm an aspiring teenage author of epic fantasy and science fiction. I've heard a whole bunch of your books from David Powers King and a lot of other bloggers too, so I decided to swing by your blog and check it out.
Looking forward to future stuff! Oh, and I'll get your books as soon as I can.
-Matt (mattswritinglair.blogspot.com)
Alex, i was really touched by the lyrics of Losing It. I have explored the challenges of aging in the stories in my short story collection. They were based somewhat on what I learned about the worst fears that people have about aging from my work as a hospital chaplain.
Blogging Buddies? What a cool theme. Mine's not nearly so fun or glamorous. Well, I'd love a mention for my book release next fall, but no pressure. And the saddest song I love most is Down In A Hole by my favorite old band Alice In Chains. So sad!
I know none of them! On the playlist they go. Thanks.
I finally got my Sad Songs up. I forgot it was today! If I hadn't come here to comment today, I would have spaced. Thank you! Can't wait for your blogfest announcement!!!
I am ready for the A-Z Challenge! It's the first blogfest that I've participated in all year.
Alex-
I did not read all the comments, and can't help but wonder if I am the only reader who knows all the songs (heck, owns all the albums) for your sad song list!
Excellent choice from Marillion! I'd toyed with including "Beautiful" on my list, but did not think of it as a sad song (I was fixated on tearjerkers).
Larry
I like your idea for the A-Z Challenge Alex! I must admit the only song on your list that I know is Marillion - great song!
Intrigued to learn what your Blogfest is all about!
Hey Matt! Thanks, I really appreciate that.
Maryann, wow, bet you've had some touching and heart-wrenching experiences working there. God Bless you for doing it.
Nancy, you rocker chick! Hey, I can add you to one of the letters. Got a date yet?
Jennie, I will have to read yours then.
Hey Larry! A couple knew them, but not many. And Beautiful is a pretty song, but you're right, not sad.
CM, you know one more than most!
Cool theme! Can't wait for this. Mine is strong women, a different woman for every letter of the alphabet and a few fun facts as well about women's largely un-acknowledged history.
Sad songs...hmmm I like What It Takes by Aerosmith as well as Because of You by Kelly Clarkson. And isn't every single country song ever recorded sad? :) Here's to an awesome challenge!
Love the theme! Looking forward to seeing some new blog buddies from it :)
Brilliant concept for a theme - definitely one-of-a-kind...
Good luck to you and to everyone else who's doing the A to Z!
Do you mean a release date? It's October 18, 2012. And yes, I am a diehard rocker chick!!
A great challenge and very difficult. I think you will take a long time choosing the bloggers given the large number of friends you have. I think it's a nice challenge and give us the chance to meet new people, something which is also a regular on your blog.
Sad songs all over the place. I hadn't realized how many wonderful songs were out there to pull the sad-strings.
I'm ready to hop into the A to Z fun!!! Yay!!
Great theme, Alex! I'm looking forward to reading your entries! :)
Can't wait to read your entries in the A-Z - sounds like a fun theme. Everyone sounds pumped! Can't wait to hear about your next blogfest, too. Hope I can participate in that one:)
Hi Alex,
Nice to be here.
Its really interesting to join in with so many wonderful participants.
Its really a challenge.
This is one of my second experience in my web writing
hope to cop up with it.
My first one is almost ready, what is the time which you are following as cut off time for this challenge?
Keep inform
Keep going
Best Wishes for the Great Challenge ahead being part of the team
Best
Phil
Can't wait to see what tearjerkers we can come up with! I'm kind of exhausted just reading about your A-Z plans, Alex, but it sounds like an epic month you've got cooking.
EJ
I sort of like those sad country songs. My husband dislikes country music. Oh well...
My A to Z theme for this year is "Around the World in 30 Days with the Passenger to Paradise."
Thanks for being a co-sponsor!!!
Monti
Mary Montague Sikes
Melissa, if you play those country songs backwards, they are happy songs!
Nancy - that's what I needed to know!
Leovi, choosing bloggers did take a long time.
Gwen, I think you'll like it.
PV, have you signed up for the Challenge? Monday is the last day to do so.
EJ, I'm exhausted just putting it together.
Monti, that is a perfect theme for you!
Hi Alex, thanks for stopping by. My theme will be music, I see that you have great taste in music too.
Of course it's a great name, I chose it ;-)
the other Alex
Sorry, late commenting again! Hope I can keep up in April :-)
Your theme sounds like fun - I look forward to hearing about some new blogger friends :-)
And I'm intrigued as to what your blogfest will be about.
I have to stop hopping around listening to sad songs. I'm too happy about starting A to Z tomorrow.
Now that is paying it forward! Looking forward to your post. My theme will be picture books with multicultural themes :)
Great theme Cap'n! :)
Great list for sad songs~
I like your theme! I can't believe it is almost April lst...where did time go. I need to time travel back..I missed a few days ;D
your theme of highlighting fellow bloggers is excellent.
My theme follows my blog MBA Knowledge Center - Management Concepts.
All the best to all the participants of the Challenge. Happy Blogging.
I didn't know any of your songs, but I liked your synopsis of them. Thanks for sharing Dude.
.......dhole
Alex, great "All Star Buddies" theme and highlighting fellow bloggers. It sounds like a ton of fun!
Thanks to the motivational March Madness that ended yesterday, I've got my head wrapped up in YA revisions, woot! I finally got the gear-shift back in drive, and right about now, I'm cruising in fifth, w/ the top down.
But, I'll be watching the A to Z from your blog...have fun. :))
All the songs you mentioned are unknown to me. But that did not surprise me because there are so many songs around the world ....
