Burning Blogging Questions, Movie Review, and Movie Answers

No, I don’t want to set my blog on fire. Besides, I think I already fried the Internet to ashes a couple weeks ago.

And yes, the new iPad 3 is awesome. I'll give you guys some details on Wednesday.

But first – movie review!

Hugo
Enough people raved about this movie that I went on faith and purchased the 3D Blu-ray. And it was money well spent!
Hugo has to be one of the most unique and original films I have ever seen. It’s enchanting, touching, and very sweet-spirited. The storyline is about loss and how the main characters deal with it. Everyone from Ben Kingsley to Asa Butterfield and Chloe Grace Moretz (who play the children) turn in incredible performances.
The visuals are stunning. They create such an amazing and vivid world. The 3D is a must, as it adds so much depth – it’s the best use of that effect since Avatar.
Hugo is wonderful and it should’ve won Best Picture.

Now for the burning questions. Just a little Ninja curiosity…

When do you blog? What’s your schedule?
I blog M-W-F and all posts go live at 5:30 am EST. I’ve noticed about half also post early in the morning.

How do you visit blogs?
I start with my blogger buddies folder in my Google Reader. It pulls up the most recent first, so those who posted late the night before are usually the last ones I visit unless I skip around.

How do you reply to comments?
I reply here on my blog, Usually I’ll leave one comment addressing about ten to twenty previous ones.

How many blogs do you visit a day?
On days I post, over a hundred; on days I don’t, it’s less. (Yes, I am a blogging Ninja.)

Do you schedule posts when you’re away?
I don’t because I wouldn’t expect anyone to visit me if I couldn’t visit others.

Finally, Roland Yeomans would like to thank everyone who visited Friday and provide the title of Mark Twain’s movie choices:

1.) THE THING (Any of the three versions.)
2.) THE THING (Again any of the three versions.)
3.) INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (Again, any of the 3 versions. Jeez, Mark!)
4.) THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (Any of the zillion money-grubbing digitally polished versions.)
5.) ALIENS (one of the deleted scenes. Yes, I told Mark Twain that was cheating, but he just chuckled it was his way to keep us, the living, on our toes!)
6.) THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW (Thankfully, the only version as yet made. Unless you count 2012!)
7.) ALIEN VS. PREDATOR I (Mark wanted to add it went triple for desert bars built on top of Aztec pyramids, but I told him we had hit our 300 word limit!)

Care to share any of your blogging habits? Guess any of the movies correctly? Have you seen Hugo? And did you finally go see John Carter?

I blog M-W-F. (Although the Friday sometimes ends up being Saturday morning if things get in the way). I tend to blog in the evening because that suits me better.

I used to just start at the top of my reader and work my way down but I took some of your advice recently and made folders.

I reply to comments on my blog and by email. I know the arguments that replying to people individually (which I do)inflates numbers, but the new reply feature makes it easy for me to copy my response and email it. For that reason alone, I love it. If I want to know how many people are commenting (which, to be honest, most of the time I don't need to), I just halve the number :-)

I daren't count up how many blogs I visit a day. It's probably over 100. There are usually a couple of days in the week where I'm too busy, so the posts pile up. I try to read the oldest first, and catch up over the weekend.

I haven't been away since I started my blog, but I wouldn't schedule, for the same reason you mentioned.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Sarah, the folders help tremendously. And good to know I'm not the only crazy person visiting so many blogs. Just so many friends!

Misha Gerrick said...

I actually visit every commenter on my blogs first, but today I think I'm going to work a dent into the A to Z challenge list.

:-)

I adored HUGO. It had me in tears and I just loved Sacha Baron Cohen's character in it.

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Alex .. Hugo IS A MUST - I agree and one day I'd love to see the 3D version .. it's a brilliant movie - so interesting with so many facets to it - the history is great too.

No schedule, when I can, sometimes I save posts (as I need time to read through them and think through them) before I comment.

I reply to my own blog's comments in batches now - as and when ...

A fair number - but not 100!

I must do what Misha is doing - visit the A - Z bloggers ...

No - I won't schedule posts when I'm away ... but for now I won't be away ...

Roland - I'm a complete dunce on any of those films ...

If you follow someone - it would be hugely helpful if you'd drop a comment a) about the blog post, and b) to say who you are etc ..

I do like to welcome people and reciprocate without jumping through hoops working out which blog is the main one ..

Cheers Alex - great thoughts too ..

Hilary

I so want to see Hugo. I think I'll have to rent it and watch it myself because my family doesn't want to see it.

I blog on Mondays and once in awhile on a Wednesday or Friday. I try to visit as many blogs as I can before or after work.

Ciara said...

Is that Hugo from the book? I can't see the image too well this morning. If so, my boys loved the book. If not, ignore me, I haven't finished my coffee yet. :)
I use to blog 7 days a week, went down to 5. Now I'm looking at a M-W-F schedule after the A-Z challenge. I need more time to visit others. I've kind of failed the last week or so after starting work on a new job. I think I've got it together now, though. :)

Lisa said...

No schedule, no trend :) Just do :)

K M Kelly said...

Hugo sounds right up my street :-)

Blogging? I blog about once a week, and visit the blogs I follow as often as I can - I tend to look at the most recent posts in my blogroll first and then maybe scroll down for any of my favourites I might have missed.

I try to reply to each commentor but don't always have time.

Marta Szemik said...

I did see Hugo and it was great! The kids loved it. I feel the same way about the performances of the youngest ones in the movie: perfect. Such art!

Huntress said...

Hugo. I was totally uninterested in Hugo. But now…

I blog when I have something to say usually at least two a week. But I don’t schedule.

Reader and my follower sidebar shows me the way to my blogger family

I like to DM and sometimes comment to individuals via the blog

My faves get comments and my regulars. But I am woefully inadequate *hangs head*

No, I don’t schedule comments when I am away. But then, I am never ‘away’ *G*

I don’t care for rabid political views btw. Everyone has an opinion and that is fine. I certainly do. But I blog as a writer. That is my interest. IMO,politics have other venues than blogs about writing/publishing.

Civil War Horror (Sean McLachlan) said...

"When do you blog? What’s your schedule?"
I don't have a set schedule for blogging. I try to blog at least three times a week, sometimes more. I don't usually blog on the weekends because hits are generally fewer. A lot of people seem to read blogs to slack off at work! I did blog this weekend, though.

"How do you visit blogs?"
There are some blogs like Guerrilla Explorer and Civil War Daily Gazette that I visit every day. I also visit the blogs on my blog roll anytime I see they have a new post. Other blogs are a bit hit-and-miss, although I always check the blogs of the people who leave comments.

"How do you reply to comments?"
One on one the same day assuming there's anything I want to say!

"How many blogs do you visit a day?"
About a dozen.

"Do you schedule posts when you’re away?"
Generally not.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Lass, Cohen was really good in the film.

Hilary, the 3D was breathtaking. A comment after following helps since sometimes the icon doesn't lead back to a blog.

Natalie, once the movie begins, your family will be enthralled.

Ciara, not sure!

Kate, you need to see it then.

Huntress, you're always good about visiting me. I don't get into politics here either. That's not what this blog is about. Besides, it's a good way to alienate half of the readers.

Rusty Carl said...

I liked Hugo too, but it was marketed a bit differently than I would have expected. The little ones here thought it was about a boy robot - I did too before I saw the movie.

I try to blog 3 times a week now, but after A-Z may go to a Monday/Thursday schedule, hoping quality will improve.

L. Diane Wolfe said...

I used to blog daily. I'm down to two days a week although I might go up to three again.

I skip around when visiting blogs. Usually I try to visit those who've visited me first.

I reply on my blog.

I visit up to 25 a day.

And the only posts I will schedule while I'm away are the weekend sillies ones.

I loved HUGO! And thanks for sharing your blogging style. I haven't seen john carter and only heard about the book recently. It looks...interesting.

Blogging habits: I have to be honest. I have so many blogs in my Google Reader now that it's getting hard to follow. I wish I could have a priority list like in my email, check those blogs first. Sometimes I miss my regular buds and it takes me a week or two to realize it.

I have yet to see HUGU. Apparently, I need to. Thanks!

Ted Cross said...

I only see movies once they come out on DVD, so I'm always way behind everyone else. My blogging habits have sagged of late, but I hope to improve.

Tara Tyler said...

Hugo was so much better than expected!

and i love surveys on writing that is...

i blog m-f, news on mon; reviews, poetry, misc mid wk; writer info & interviews on fri

i visit thru google reader and whoever visits me

i respond in a blanket comment unless specificity is required (i dont usually go back to others looking for responses myself so i figure not many others come back either) and i comment on their blogs too

depends on how busy i am. i'd say 30 average

sometimes...

have a great week!

Christine Rains said...

Now I'm curious to see Hugo. I'll have to add it to my Netflix list. I have Stake Land right now. I haven't heard a thing about it, but it sounded interesting. Have you seen the trailer for Iron Sky? I laughed so hard.

I usually blog most weekdays and sometimes Saturday. I usually respond to each comment unless they're just general comments like for Teaser Tuesdays. I try to visit at least 20 blogs a day.

The Angry Lurker said...

Hope to see John Carter next Tuesday, I love the movie quiz element of the blog, I visit everyone who comments first and then follow the blogrolls...

Unknown said...

Hugo is a great movie, I was not expecting to be so pleasantly surprised. My blogging schedule is not set for any special days but I try to make a point of blogging at least three times a week. I reply to comments through e-mail and I visit as many blogs as I can starting with my blog-roll. I tried Google Reader but could not make heads or tales of it!

Cathy Olliffe-Webster said...

Saw Hugo - LOVED it. Saw John Carter on Saturday and fell asleep. OK, so maybe it was the fact I didn't get enough sleep the night before and spent all day outside splitting wood but still, it was a bit of a snoozefest for me. I've seen that movie about a hundred million times. Save me from more of the same!!!

Blogging habits: Schedule? What schedule? I post when inspiration strikes or I have an extra half an hour and there's nothing good on TV.

Visiting: I use my Great Blogs side post.

Replies: on the blog. I love the "reply" option. Makes everything so much easier.

Visiting other blogs: Are you KIDDING? More than 100? OMG, Alex, you ARE a ninja! If I visit 20 I'm doing well. (Now feel guilty. Way to go, Ninja-Boy!)

Scheduling while away: Nope. That would involve scheduling, right? So no, don't do that.

Alex, do you have a day job? I'm curious how you find that much time!! (And jealous!) When I was off for a month I did a lot of blog-hopping. Now it's way more difficult although I try, i really, really try.

Matthew MacNish said...

We saw Hugo in the theater, but in 2D. I don't have a 3D TV, so it will be some time before I get to see it in 3D. The story alone was enough for me, though.

mshatch said...

my brother and I loved Hugo and like you I usually post M/W/F plus sunday pics. I also respond to comments on my blog and try to check out the blogs of all my commenters as well as as many others I can get to. I'd get more done if not for the pesky day job :)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Sean, blogging rather than working seems the norm!

Rusty, I was thinking Hugo was the robot as well. The mechanical man was such a small part of the story though.

Diane, I need to get better about visiting all of those who comment.

Katie, it is awesome!

Brinda, do they?

Shari, that's why I made folders in Google Reader so I could prioritize who I visit.

Tara, you blog in a similar fashion then! And if you only visit thirty a day, thank you for making my blog one of those.

Christine, not watched the trailer yet.

Lurker, you will dig John Carter.

Siv, it helps to make folders for all the blogs in Google Reader - otherwise it's overwhelming.

Cathy, no I'm not kidding! And I'm at work now. Working on a project on one computer, blogging on my laptop, and a movie is playing on my iPad. I'd have music going on my iTouch, but that might be just a bit too confusing.

Amy said...

I've been wondering about Hugo for a while now, but I think I'll have to definitely watch it very soon. Thanks for sharing Alex! :)

Miranda Hardy said...

Hugo was a great movie. I really enjoyed it. Your blogging habits blow me away. I do read a lot, but I don't always comment on every one. Bad, huh?

Heather M. Gardner said...

Happy Monday Ninja Alex!

You are a machine.

Someone gave us a copy of Hugo. It's still sitting there. My 6 yr old wants to watch it but we haven't had the time to sit for a couple hours yet. Will this be too sad for him? I'm pretty sure most of it will be over his head anyway.

I'm typically M-F on posts, and I try to get them up by 8:30am the latest. Depends on how much of it I did in advance. Most times I'm an off-the-cuff, stream-of-consciousness poster. As far as visiting blogs, I have 300+ sorted into folders in Reader. I usually start with those that I can read quickly or not comment on at all just to get my brain working. Then I move on to the blogs that require more brain power. As far as replying to comments, I respond faster early in the morning. By the afternoon, I'll do a bunch at a time. Since Blogger got rid of the subscribe button on the pop-up comment window, I usually reply via email if they have an email attached, as well as posting the response on my blog for everyone to read. It might be double duty, but I like the complete conversation available. Usually about 100 or so. Mondays are more because I can't really find the time to read blogs on the weekends. The one time I was away for a two weeks, I scheduled some guest posts. Seemed to work out all right.

Luanne G. Smith said...

LOVED Hugo. Really well done movie. I liked the book too, but the movie really brought it all to life for me. So good. One of those cases where I think I might have even liked the movie better than the book.

Cate Masters said...

I haven't yet seen Hugo but it's on my list.
I'm trying to keep to M-W-F, but also participate in Six Sentence Sunday, and throw in an occasional extra if news comes up.
I'm much less organized than you. All hail to the ninja!

T. Powell Coltrin said...

My intentions are to post M,W,F and Sunday, but that doesn't always happen.

Denise Covey said...

Hi Alex. Yes you are a blogging ninja.

I post M and F mostly, but not strictly. I don't believe most people keep a record of when you say you'll blog. My plans often go haywire so I'd hate to think I MUST get a post done if I had nothing ready.

I try to visit everyone who comments although I see this is going out of favour with people's time constraints. Once I've visited my commenters, I work down my blog list of recent posts.

I reply to comments individually on my blog now that there's a Reply button. Probably a waste of time as I never return to check if there's a reply.

I visit far too many blogs a day - maybe 20 or more. That's a lot to most people who aren't Ninjas.

I pop in and say hello when I'm travelling and catch up with commenters either on the spot or when I return.

I think blogging is changing so I'll be interested in what your commenters say.

Denise

Amy, it was really magical.

Miranda, if I read, I comment.

Heather, it's a bit adult, but I think he'll be enthralled by the visuals.

Joshua, some do require brain power to understand. And good to hear someone else is a blogging machine.

LG, that is rare.

I definitely want to see Hugo.

Jasmine Walt said...

I don't really have a blogging schedule anymore: I pretty much blog when something's on my mind that I want to share. I usually just scroll through my blogger dashboard and see who's posted what, and I reply to each comment individually on my blog. :)

Jasmine Walt said...

Oh, and the last movie I watched was Sherlock Holmes II, which was excellent. I really need to get out there more. :D

Elizabeth Spann Craig said...

Thanks for the review on Hugo. I "read" the book (it was mostly sketches...amazing sketches), and was wondering if the film was good.

You've got a lot of discipline with your blog schedule!

Tyrean Martinson said...

M-W-F mostly . . .and I try to post before 8a.m. Pacific Time, but sometimes it's later . . I'm still working on pre-writing my posts and using the schedule option.

Annalisa Crawford said...

I'd hate to count how many blogs I visit - usally because I turned the computer on to do some actual work, and 3 hours later I realised I haven't even started writing!

After the A-Z challenge I'm going to follow a more controlled approach to my posts - rather than just blurting out what I'm thinking of at the time.

I've decided not to see Hugo until I've read the book - but I'm not really getting into it. Hubby says it's fantastic!

Kimberlee Turley said...

I try to blog on any day but Monday. It feels like EVERYONE posts on Monday and it's so hard to get around to all the blogs in my blogroll.

Seriously, no one ever posts on the weekend, which is so sad since that's when I usually have the most free time.

And yes, you are a blogging ninja if you can hit 100 a day and still have time to write.

I post about three times a week, usually Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, although I may post them the evening before. I don;t really have a rhyme or reason.

And I comment to bloggers who comment on my posts and from my Blog Roll. I'll also comment to people i see commenting on other blogs that I have not visited in a while.

Jasmine, it was a good movie though.

Tyrean, I always schedule, because if I had to put together a post at 5:30 in the morning it would make no sense.

Annalisa, that's how it usually happens. I've not read the book but the movie version was amazing.

Kimberly, Monday IS the busiest!

Jeremy, I think you do very well with commenting.

Betty, bet my wife would like that outfit.

Nancy Thompson said...

I post once a week, usually on Mondays. I write ahead of time & schedule to post at 6am EST. then I spend the day visiting blogs on my blog roll & those of my last commenters, then as many of my followers as I can, starting with those who comment most recently. Throughout the week, I try to visit those blogs I know post on a schedule, like you. I find time throughout the day for that. I don't usually have time to comment back though occasionally I will. I don't usually post if I'm away for the same reason as you.

Leigh Covington said...

Good to know this about HUGO. I tried to convince my daughter to rent that this weekend, but we got LABYRINTH instead. Still a good show, but I want to see HUGO!

I blog M T TH. Weird. I know! I use google reader, my blog list on my sidebar and always try to visit those who visit me. I still think you are light years ahead of the rest of us tho. You visit everywhere. I wish I got around to more blogs.

Karen Lange said...

You are indeed a blogging ninja! Very inspiring!

My blog schedule is Monday and Thursday. I've more recently been considering posting just once a week till I get some projects out of the way. As much as I enjoy blogging and visiting other's blogs, I have trouble fitting it all in. Perhaps you need to give us all a time management seminar! :)

I reply to comments on the blog. Occasionally I will email someone about a specific comment. I visit as many blogs as I can depending on my schedule, starting with my regular buddies (like you) and those who've made comments on my blog. Then I go through the rest that I follow as best I can.

Happy Monday!

Unknown said...

You are a blogging ninja! I haven't been able to get to as many blogs as I used to. I do try to get to all the blogs I can and especially those who leave a comment on my blog.

I have to see Hugo now!

cleemckenzie said...

I agree that Hugo was wonderfully entertaining. At last a picture that should be in 3D.

As to blogging: I've cut back to Mondays with an occasional Tues or Wed. post. I chose to put my writing and outdoor time ahead of blogging. I write it a day or two ahead and schedule it to go up at 5AM Pacific Time.

I reply to visitors during the week, but really try to get around a lot (no specific count) on Mondays. If I take a vacation, I take a blogging break, or I keep to the schedule while I'm away.

Happy Monday, Alex!

Cassie Mae said...

Gosh, I need to get blogging habits, since I blog at two places right now, and in April, I'll be blogging in three. So my everyday posts on my own blog will have to be cut back... after the A to Z challenge of course.

And google reader is my best friend. :)

Christopher Hudson said...

I'm a once-a-week kinda blogger ... I'd do more, but then I'd never work on my WIP ... which suffers as it is. Hugo was a good flic ... saw John Carter ... ok, but thought there was too much plot ... Cowboys and Aliens was better.

Suze said...

I think 'Hugo' should have won Best Picture, too. My husband and daughter loved it so much, they went to watch it in 3-D at the dollar cinema, yesterday.

I've been all over the place in terms of posting, in the past. When I first started, I posted every day. Then I felt like maybe I posted too much, so I tried to cut back, and in trying to cut back, I wanted to post more, then I got burnt out trying to sort through all that nonsense in my own head.

I think I may have arrived at my schedule and I've been afraid to speak it for fear of having talking take the place of doing but I'm gonna take a leap of articulating faith here on your blog, Al.

Barring apocalypse, I post Sunday morning, Tuesday evenings and Thursday evenings, no specific hour so my time zone isn't of importance, but I do live in the US.

Phew. The deed is done. (Wipes brow and slurps coffee out of vintage McDonald's 'Smile and say cheeseburger' mug.)

Suze, it will be all right. No jinxes with your reveal!

EJ, it was! And very sorry you and your family had to endure that hard time.

I can't wait to see your review on the iPad 3. I blog on Wednesdays unless there is a blog fest or something else I'm participating in, and then I will post extra. I blog, well, pretty much every day, but then I don't visit nearly as many blogs as you do! (I'd love to visit more if I could just get a faster internet connection...)

I reply to comments via email, and sometimes in the comments themselves, if there's no email address to reply to.

The first blogs I visit are those from all the people who left comments on my blog while I was slumbering the night before. Then I go to Google Reader and just jump around a bit.

The only time I'll schedule posts for while I'm away is for the A to Z Challenge! I'll be away over the Easter weekend and don't know what kind of cell phone signal I'll have...

I blog M & Th. My post goes live 4 AM central. I go to my blogger dashboard to just start reading.... I do most of my visiting on Monday, but skip a little bit around during the week. I usually reply to blogs via email. I've had some lively exchanges with fellow bloggers that way. I haven't a clue how many blogs I visit.

And finally, yes sometimes I do schedule posts when I'm going to be away, just because....

I blog M-W-F and schedule my posts the weekend before. They go live at 7 a.m. Central Time. Fridays are always the top ten list. Mon/Wed can be anything. Sometimes I visit blog buddies first, sometimes commenters first. Sometimes they're the same. I visit about 20 blogs every day M-F and commenters only on the weekends. Unless I'm playing catch-up. I'd love to spend all day visiting and commenting, but gotta write and have a life, too.

Yea Hugo!

Pat Tillett said...

Hey Alex!
I TRY to post M/W/F. I've been on the road so much lately that I'm not keeping to it very well. I answer all comments via my blog and usually address 5-10 at a time. I always check out the blogs of those who comment on mine first. Then I read the ones I really like a lot. Then I check out the rest that I follow. I'm not able to do this on a daily or even semi-daily schedule, so I'm always playing catch-up.

But this April, I was crazy enough to sign up for the A to Z challenge, so I guess I'll be posting every day, except Sundays. Yikes! We'll see how it goes. This pregnancy has been peppered with many headaches and health concerns. Sigh.

I've been back and forth on the scheduling of posts. I'm finding that sometimes I'll need a few days in advance to get posts done, as is the case with the blog tour. Other times, though, it's not that big of a deal. I guess it has to do with any given moment.

ediFanoB said...

When do you blog? What’s your schedule?
I live in a different time zone - CET = Central European Time which is 5 hours ahead EST. I have one regularly post on Saturday which I post at 11:50 pm CET = 6:50 pm EST.

How do you visit blogs?
I use Google Reader and visit blogs in a specific order.

How do you reply to comments?
I reply every single comment on my blog which is possible as I do not get so many comments.

How many blogs do you visit a day?
That depends on my job. As I have to do everything in the evening or during the weekend it can happen that I visit blogs only every second or third day.

Do you schedule posts when you’re away?
Yes I do. It happens when I promised a date for a review.
In May 2012 I will be on holiday for 14 days. During this time I will schedule seven posts in a row. It is one of my big projects within 2012.
So people have to wait a bit for replies.

Baygirl, I did say iPad 3!

Jessica, glad the folders are helping!

Rachel, that's a good time to pre-schedule away posts. Don't want to miss a letter during the Challenge.

Kitty, I won't tell on you if you don't tell on me!

Bish, I hit Google Reader first and then go from there.

Carol, don't deviate from that top ten list - it rocks!

Pat, but when you're on the road, we know cool photos will soon follow. And really glad you liked CassaFire!!!!

Cherie, you can do it!

Edi, you are always so consistent and thorough with your posting. And you always come visit, which I appreciate.

I knew you'd have the new iPad! I haven't even got the first yet. LOL.

How do you manage to visit so many blogs in one day? You really are a ninja!

Michael Offutt, Phantom Reader said...

I of course disagree about your Best Picture comment. After I saw "The Artist" I was so impressed with it that I honestly knew Hugo didn't stand a chance. I agree that Hugo is a smart film, but it is underwhelming in almost every aspect as far as awards go.

I also got the new iPad. I agree with you sir. It is a pretty smart device. I don't know when I shall blog about it but maybe soon.

Catherine Stine said...

Okay, you've convinced me to see Hugo!

Laura Diamond said...

I wanted to see Hugo. Can't believe it's out in DVD already! Times flies.

Claire Hennessy said...

I watched half of Hugo at home on my tv, not in 3D, and really didn't like it and turned it off, bored. The visuals were great but I found the story did not keep my interest. But hearing your rave reviews I might give it a second chance - maybe I was tired.
Blimey - you visit over 100 blogs in a day?? I'm thrilled if I get to 15!

Jennie Bailey said...

I try to blog M-W-F and I set it to post at 12:30am. I reply to comments via email (though sometimes I miss them in my inbox!) and I start with those blogs for visits, then I go down the list of blogs that I follow, and then I will choose a few followers and hop on over to their blogs for commenting!

Saw John Carter. I think expecting the worst really helped me enjoy the film! And how sad is that?!?!

Susan Oloier said...

I missed Hugo at the theaters. My son and I read the book together, and we were so disappointed when it wasn't playing anymore. I'm putting it on my at-home movie list now. The book truly was mesmerizing.
I used to blog regularly on M-W-F. Now it seems pretty sporadic. That might have to do with my A to Z prep, though :-)

Belle said...

I'm certainly going to see Hugo after your fine review. It sounds wonderful. I received a Kobo for my birthday, so i think I can get your book this payday! I think. Who knows? I usually blog late at night when I won't be disturbed.

Unknown said...

Glad to hear what you say about Hugo, I had an idea it would be good. I'll try the book too. Thank you! Look forward to your comments on i-Pad3.
My blogging? It's like much of my life, a hit and miss job. Some weeks I'll be fully inspired and I'll whiz about like a bee on speed. Others I'll drag it out and whine I don't know what to write about *sigh*. And, yes, I know you're supposed to blog on certain days... Roll on A-Z that's all I can say!

Golden Eagle said...

After having read the book Hugo Cabret, I really want to see the movie . . .

I feel the same way about scheduling posts if I'm not going to be there replying to them within the next few hours. For the A-Z Challenge I'm doing it, but just so I can devote most of my blogging time to replying to comments and visiting blogs.

Donna K. Weaver said...

Hubby and I almost went to see Hugo this weekend but things got crazy. My brother raved about it.

Hubby and I are finally ready to start reading CassaFirE tonight.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Ellie, but of course! Soon there will be an iPad in every room in the house.

Michael, Hugo was just so original though. (Sorry, I really don't like silent films.) And while the iPad 3 isn't a huge leap from the iPad 2, the image is much sharper and the processor faster.

Claire, you just have to be ready for a slow paced film.

Jennie, as long as you enjoyed it.

Susan, I know I'm busy preparing for the Challenge.

Belle, thank you! I know you've been trying to get it.

Susan, I'm just a creature of habit so a schedule works for me.

Donna, hope you enjoy it!

Ruth Schiffmann said...

Wow, Alex, 100 blogs a day?! Whew! No wonder I feel like your name is everywhere - it is!
I post once a week - late Sunday nights. Throughout the week I visit everyone who's left me comments and then I randomly work my way through my dashboard. I know there's got to be a better way, but so far, my boggled mind hasn't sorted one out. I also try to reply to each comment on my blog.
I don't know how I'd possibly find time to write if I posted more frequently, although, obviously it can be done because I'm in the minority with the once-a-week posts.

Arlee Bird said...

I'm still of mixed feeling about responding on the pop-up box. I've gone back to doing it, but I'm not sure that many of those replies are read. Now that I don't receive an email notification I have for the most part not been going back to check.
I don't visit anywhere near as many blogs as I used to--I don't think, but then again I haven't been keeping track.
So far I have been scheduling posts when I'm away but I usually make them pretty light and not to elicit much comment. I do go back to those posts as I am able to.
I still need to work with my Google Reader--haven't done that yet. I usually go to visit those who have left comments on my previous posts.

I try to publish my posts early in the AM, unless I'm falling far behind which has been happening lately. Then I just push publish when I finish. I take to to read others blogs whenever I can, several a day, usually spending about an hour or so a day catching up. Again, though, lately I've been running behind.

Andrew Leon said...

Hopefully, I'll be going to see John Carter on Wednesday. It may be the last chance since all the theaters will be swamped with Hunger Games on Friday.

The theory is that I blog on Tuesday/Thursdays, but I sometimes slip to M/W/F. Just depends on how much I have to say in a week.

Anonymous said...

I also bought Hugo for blu-ray without previously seeing it. I am glad I did. It was such a great movie!

I tend to visit about about 10 blogs a day. 20 on Mondays. I post just about every day, but this may be subject to change.

Sadly, as you may know, I can't go see John Carter.

M Pax said...

I usually go visit visitors 1st. Today I'm starting w/ weekend visitors. I try to visit 20-30 blogs a day. I take weekends off.

I'll have to check out Hugo. I have Immortals downstairs. Bad or good, it has Henry Cavill in it. :)

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Alex, I'm so glad you enjoyed Hugo that much. It was absolutely magical, wasn't it? And Scorsese's love for the story was written all over it.

Cherie Reich said...

Love the Ninja curiosity. :)

For me, I blog M-T-W-T-F and my posts go live at 8:00 AM EST. I think this summer I'll cut it down to M-W-F, though.

I visit blogs from comments first. Then I star posts to read and comment on in Google Reader.

I reply by email most of the time. Sometimes I'll add comments to the posts.

It depends. During a blog hop, it can be a lot. In general it's around 30-50.

And yes, I schedule posts when I'm away, but I'm never away for long, so I do tend to catch up at least on the people who comment on my blog.

Lynda R Young as Elle Cardy said...

When do you blog? What’s your schedule?
I post Mondays and Thursday and visit M-F and take a break on the weekends.

How do you visit blogs?
I have my favourites but then I mainly stick to those who comment on my blog because I've tried to take a little step back from blogging. I want to organise my reader, but I'm following a gazillion blogs and it's a big chunk of time to get it done.

How do you reply to comments?
I use the reply button now on my blog, although I still suspect many don't return to read them. Plus I don't reply to everyone anymore, but I'll always visit their blog.

How many blogs do you visit a day?
Gosh, about 15-20? Not sure. It's dropped a little since I've tried to cut back.

Do you schedule posts when you’re away? Not at all.

Anonymous said...

Haven't seen Hugo yet, but it's on my to see list... lucky for me they are playing it on the plane when I fly over to the US in a few weeks...

I try to blog 3 times a week, but last few weeks I've fallen behind as I frantically try to get my revision done.

I used to blog more often but for a while now I've been down to once a week. I visit other people's blogs at least five days a week, but I'm such a slacker compared to you, Alex. 100 blogs? Wow -- you're good.

I loved Hugo too and was happy when it at least won an Oscar for art direction, because the set was fantastic!

I blog Monday and Thursday. The exact time depends on when I get the thing finished.

i use my google reader to see what the posts are about and then go visit if I'm interested. I'll also return visits to anyone who leaves a comment.

I reply to comments same as you.

I visit hundreds of blogs over a week. I check more than that in my google reader.

I mean to schedule stuff but I never seem to get round to it. usually I post from wherever I am. Wifi FTW!

Schedule??? Surely you jest! :) I don't follow a schedule - but I do try to blog once or twice a week as the mood strikes me.

I usually visit a minimum of 20 blogs a day - although I've never counted. Several days a week I try to go much higher to keep up with folks - it's hard. I use my Google Reader folders too - one for best buddies, others for each day of the week)

I reply on my blog in chunks like you do.

I can't blog more than 10 minutes in the morning and then not until after supper/family stuff in the evenings so it does get tough.

D.G. Hudson said...

Hugo was great! Highly recommend it.

I blog monthly, although I've considered twice a month - I'm more of an information and image curator, and I use that extra time for writing.

I'm scheduling some posts now, which is new for me, I looked into it for the A-Z Challenge.

I reply in the comments to someone who visits my blog or follows. I then visit their blog. I don't email.

Usually I'll visit 5 or 6 blogs a day but it's been 20 or more a day since I started checking out the alphabet.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Angela, that's my schedule.

Kittie, I'm a man of routine.

I try to post MWF, but I'm lax during the week. It seems this is a popular schedule; perhaps I should post on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday instead :)

I think I get to about 10-20 during the weekdays, more on weekends. Sometimes. I'm lazy.

I only reply in the comments, and try to visit every blog that comments, plus extra who didn't. Sometimes I forget to respons because I'm clicking commenters and browsing their blogs.

Seriously Alex, you're putting me to shame here . .

I'm hoping my exhusband takes us to see John Carter this weekend. I really want to see it on the big screen.

I need to take blogging advice from you--I'm so disorganized I often miss new posts and then I think it's sort of a faux pas to comment when it's been several days and new posts are out. I need to see Hugo, just so I can see a movie where Sacha Cohen is not just being some crazy caricature.

Callie Leuck said...

When do you blog? What’s your schedule?
I'm trying to do twice a week; Tuesdays and one other day...I think that's turning out to be Thursdays mostly.

How do you visit blogs?
I've got folders set up in Google Reader, but mostly I only actually click through to comment if there is something I particularly want to respond to, or if I think I haven't commented on that particular blog in a while.

How do you reply to comments?
On the blog, with the "reply to comment" function.

How many blogs do you visit a day?
I mostly read posts on Reader, and it varies heavily by day. I'd say less than a hundred, but posts might build up if I go a few days without reading.

Do you schedule posts when you’re away?
Sometimes. I usually just post things when I write them. I'll be scheduling posts for April, however.

Unknown said...

I've heard good things about Hugo, but I'd give it a miss in 3D. 3D movies don't do much for me.

I've never prescheduled posts before, but I'll have to in April as I'm away for a few days of the A-Z, which wasn't the case when I signed up! How do you visit blogs?
I have a list of my favorite blogs on my blog. I regularly visit them (2-3 days a week), read their newest posts and leave comments.

How do you reply to comments?
I reply on my blog, right below the comments.

How many blogs do you visit a day?
Depends. At times 2-3 blogs, at times 15-20 blogs

Do you schedule posts when you’re away?
Nope.

I reply to every comment on my blog.

I don't count how many I visit - probably best not to calculate how much time I spend either.

I sometimes schedule posts - depends on the situation.

I try to blog every day to give my friends something new to read for that day. It's a discipline like writing on my novels every day.

My landlord/owner popped a last minute move with the carrot of moving to a very nice apartment. The ghost of Gypsy followed of course -- snickering at me each groaning step of three flights of stairs!! Those bookcases and boxes of books got heavy!

So I didn't write over the weekend. Sorry, my friends.

Alex, you're the blogging god. :))

I try to post once per week either Sundays or Mondays, but I'm not strict with that.

My absolute (no budge) goal is I visit anyone who comments on my blog, first. I also do this before any tweeting or checking emails.

Then I start with my followers and blogs I follow. I also try to hit at least 25 IWSG members per week, different ones each time.

I could do better, but for now, it works.

This week, it's all about The Hunger Games movie for us in my household. 4:40 p.m. come Friday, we'll be in line. :)

Nikki, where I live now is home, and that's good enough for me.

Mark, since it gets an extra day during the weekends, my Friday posts tend to do all right.

Alex, you continue to amaze me. 100 blogs on your posting days? I feel totally inadequate, thank you very much :/

Unknown said...

I generally try to post Monday, Wednesday and Friday, like most commenters on this post I think. However this has to be flexible because what with uni assignments and music stuff I don't always have time to write a good post, and I don't want to post an 'alright' one.

I visit all the blogs on my iGoogle page first, then the ones I follow, and finally a bunch of others that I have bookmarked. I keep meaning to find feeds for them all, but it never seems to happen.

I reply to all my comments individually on my blog since the new reply feature came in. Before that I just did them in batches.

I'd say I visit around forty blogs a day on a good day. Yes, I know I'm not trying.

I do schedule posts while I'm away, mainly because I don't want people to know I'm away, and it get a bit noticeable when new posts don't come up on the right days.
