Insecure Writer’s Support Group, Tick Tock Release, Infinity War Review, May Movie Preview, and More Reviews

It’s time for another group posting of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! Time to release our fears to the world – or offer encouragement to those who are feeling neurotic. If you’d like to join us, click on the tab above and sign up. We post the first Wednesday of every month. I encourage everyone to visit at least a dozen new blogs and leave a comment. Your words might be the encouragement someone needs.

The awesome co-hosts for the May 2 posting of the IWSG are E.M.A. Timar, J. Q. Rose, C.Lee McKenzie, and Raimey Gallant!

Today’s optional question - It’s spring! Does this season inspire you to write more than others, or not?

I don’t believe the season matters much. Either way, I’d rather be inside.

Although... I did work a little bit on my Cassa sequel while on break last month!

The IWSG is proud to announce our third anthology is out now!
Thanks to everyone who entered, judged, and helped promote this book. And thanks to all of the members – bloggers, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Goodreads book club. You are the reason for the IWSG and its success.

Exploring the facets of time, eleven authors delve into mysteries and crimes that linger in both dark corners and plain sight. Featuring the talents of Gwen Gardner, Rebecca M. Douglass, Tara Tyler, S. R. Betler, C.D. Gallant-King, Jemi Fraser, J. R. Ferguson, Yolanda Renée, C. Lee McKenzie, Christine Clemetson, and Mary Aalgaard.

Movie Reviews

Avengers: Infinity War

What can I say? Wow! This is a superhero film on a massive scale. And not just the cast of characters but the scope of the story and its locations.
This was a very ambitious project, juggling so many characters and storylines, but the Russo brothers pulled it off.
All of the superheroes get screen time, especially the leads with their own movies. (Thor, Dr. Strange, etc.) The Guardians of the Galaxy get the most screen time due to their direct ties with Thanos. Notable absences include Hawkeye and Ant-Man, but everyone else is present.
Thanos is a very complex villain. He’s not out to conquer the world. He just wants to bring balance to the universe in his own twisted way and at whatever cost.
Special effects – well, you know they are awesome. And on a grand scale.
This is a much deeper and darker Marvel film. Parts of it will crush you. There are a lot more surprises and twists, and the storyline isn’t what you’d expect. (Spoiler) Yes, some of the Avengers die, but it’s not who you think.
It is a complete story. However, considering how it ends, it’s a major bummer we have to wait a year for the second half.
Highly recommended! Go get your geek on.

Beyond Skyline
The sequel to Skyline, beginning at just about the same time. Fortunately, it’s an improvement over the original and with a far better ending.
I give the creators credit. It’s low budget, but they went for it anyway, and the special effects are mostly good.
There are three vastly different settings/acts and the movie does feel a little odd as it transitions from one to the next.
The scenes on the alien ship are not for the squeamish though.
I can’t say I liked it, but again, an improvement over the first film, which I thought was awful
Worth a free rental for science fiction/horror fans.

Morgan
She’s an artificially created humanoid and a corporate consultant must decide if the project will continue or if Morgan needs to be terminated.
A small film, it’s well done if not a little cold. A similar theme was explored better and more in depth in Ex Machina.
There are some major names among the co-stars – Michelle Yeoh, Brian Cox, Paul Giamatti, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
Morgan is played by Anya Taylor-Joy (Split, The Witch), both calculating and dangerous, while Kate Mara as the consultant is even more so. It’s a little difficult to decide who to root for since both leads are distant.
Interesting but not memorable. Worth a free rental.

May Movie Preview

Here are the upcoming theatrical releases for May! As always, descriptions courtesy of the IMDB. Snark provided by me.

18-

Deadpool 2
After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry's hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor - finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World's Best Lover.
Director: David Leitch
Stars: Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller, Josh Brolin, Ryan Reynolds
I won’t even attempt snark here – Mr. Deadpool, I bow to your royal snarkness. (And by the way, if you haven’t already guessed, the description is a joke.)

25-

Solo: A Star Wars Story
During an adventure into a dark criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future copilot Chewbacca and encounters Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebellion.
Director: Ron Howard
Stars: Emilia Clarke, Alden Ehrenreich, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Donald Glover
I want this to be great, but it could wind up the Jar-Jar Binks of Star Wars films. Dude doesn’t look like Harrison Ford at all!

Are you inspired by spring and did you take time off to write last month? Who is picking up Tick Tock? Who saw Infinity Wars? Or either of the other movies? Are you looking forward to either Deadpool or Solo?

During my break, I was a guest at Thoughts in Progress talking about the IWSG and Tick Tock. Plus be sure to check out the Tick Tock Mystery Blog for other stops on the tour.

I loved Infinity War, though I expected more epicness from it. Also, some of the characters were so underused. It was Thanos' show though.

Congrats on the release of the new anthology! Hope it does well.

I'm looking forward to seeing Infinity. I've heard nothing but good things, and I love me some Thor.

I am really, really looking forward to reading Tic Tock. Huge thanks to those involved in its publication.

I don't think the seasons influence how much I write. I like to stay inside more, too.
I'm so so behind on Marvel movies I don't know when I'll see Infinity War. Trying desperately to avoid spoilers, though.
Congrats to all of the anthology authors!

Pat Hatt said...

Good to know Infinity War holds up to the praise. Yeah, Deadpool out snarks us all. Kinda meh on Solo too. Beyond Skyline was okay, but pretty much forgettable once over.

No matter the season we write away at our bay.

Hi, Alex!

It's about time Tick Tock hit the book stores. I hope it is a smashing success. Thanks for reviewing AIW. It sounds awesome. I prefer fantasy films that are on the dark side. I just finished binge watching season 1 of Atypical which features Jennifer Jason Leigh. I'm happy to see the fan favorite of the 80s getting so much work in the 2010s, including roles in Atypical, Twin Peaks and in the movie you reviewed, Morgan.

Enjoy the rest of your week, good buddy Alex!

First, congrats on the anthology, I will be picking this up to read.

I haven’ seen Advengers yet, but it is on my list.

I am glad to hear you did some writing, I miss the characters from your series.

As a poet spring offers so much creative energy, everything is coming back to life. I think it stirs the soul in many ways or maybe it just brings out the romantic in me.

Have a wonderful week! I hope we see a short story from you soon!

Congratulations on the new release! Tic Tock is such a fabulous title too. I am influenced by the season's but it is snowing here today. Sigh...

Tic Tock looks to be a good read. I will be downloading a copy. The movies sound interesting. I've seen a few posting on Facebook about going to the Avengers.

Congrats on the Anthology release! How exciting. I think everyone in my house has watched Avengers. Must carve out ten hours to see this amazing film. ;-)

Joey Lynn Resciniti said...

So I’m one of four humans on earth that didn’t like Infinity Wars. I really think the ending was socially irresponsible. It might be because I had a boss for a few years that would expound daily on how all the world’s problems could be saved by population reduction. “We just need to take out China,” he’d say. “A few billion less people and everything would be good.”

He was a real man that really thought that.

And so, I think we need to be more careful about what we put into our nation’s moral registry. Am I more important that you? In the Marvel Universe, I get the distinct impression I am.

The first 2/3 of the movie was just amazing. I think they should have quit while they were ahead.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

George, characters like Bucky didn't get a lot of time, but it didn't need to be longer.

JH, Thor is in it a lot so you'll be happy.

Pat, forgettable is better than hating it though.

Truedessa, working on it!

Jennifer, you must!

Joey, at least they weren't saying taking out all those people was a good thing.

The Cynical Sailor said...

Congrats to everyone involved in the Tick Tock anthology! I got my copy yesterday and started reading it. Fantastic stuff! And yay for you for working on the Cassa sequel. Looking forward to another installment in the series. I really hope Solo is great. I don't think we can take another Jar-Jar Binks. Cheers - Ellen

Good to know on the movies. Yay on the new anthology. Congratulations to the authors! So you like to stay indoors? Me too even though I was practically raised outdoors. :) I have no patience for bugs and MO humidity. :)

Congrats on the Anthology book! I can see spring go both ways...some people will feel a renewal and start working on their book while others will be distracted by enjoying the outside. I really am looking forward to Infinity War which sounds so good. I need to watch last year’s Thor and the Galaxy sequel. I don’t know the other 2 flicks though. I’m glad you had time off and started writing!

Congrats on the antho - it looks awesome and I'm looking forward to it.

I actually watched AIW over the weekend, so I can, for once, follow the conversation and not feel like a complete cine-illiterate :)

To me all seasons have their own unique beauty, each one inspirational. Though in the higher latitudes the markers are more prominent, the contrasts are higher.

Madeline Mora-Summonte said...

Congratulations to all those involved with the anthology!

That Morgan movie sounds interesting - making a note. We watched a few movies last month - really enjoyed The Founder with Michael Keaton.

M.J. Fifield said...

I saw Infinity War at a special advanced screening. You could hear a pin drop in that theater at the end of that movie. We were all a little shell shocked. I'm pretty sure I spent most of it looking like that Scream painting. But it was good, and I'm looking forward to seeing it again.

Jennifer Lane said...

Wow, another anthology--cool! Awesome accomplishment.

Natalie Aguirre said...

Glad you got some writing done on your break. It's been awhile for me with my mom's move. And excited for the new anthology.

Crystal Collier said...

Yay for Tick Tock and all the fabulous authors. So excited to read it!

I share your reservations about Solo. Honestly, I haven't been that impressed with any of the Star Wars movies since Disney took over. Maybe I'm just more of a super hero fan than space opera? (Is it blasphemy to say that here?)

Jen said...

Congratulations to all the authors in the new anthology! I know they're so excited!

If any season inspires me to write more it's Fall. I always get the creative bug when Autumn rolls around :D

Everyone keeps telling me to see INFINITY WAR. I didn't even see the last THOR movie, even though I have a bit (lol) of a crush on Loki. I don't know. Some of these movies stress me out just thinking about them!

Wait? Another STAR WARS movie? They only made three. Why would they make another one? I'll be sitting that one out.

Have a wonderful week!
Jen

Super excited for spring here in the Midwest. It is a total distraction to writing, however. Plus, I have seniors graduating from high school. The Avengers looks good. One of my boys has already seen it (on a school night!). Thanks for all you do for the IWSG.

Erika Beebe said...

This spring and summer is so exciting on the movie side! I can't wait to see the Avengers! I would have already opening weekend but the family has been sick. I'm hoping for next weekend. Hoping over to buy Tick Tock shortly. I can't wait!

S.A. Larsenッ said...

Congratulations on the anthology! Tweeted yesterday. It's really exciting, and I'm sure it will do great! Yeah, Infinity Wars...I want to see that, soon. For the most part, I've heard good things. But I've also heard arguments about the ending. Seeing how I haven't watched it yet I can't comment on that, but it makes me want to see it even more.

Lynn La Vita said...

Congratulations on the release of the new anthology. It's will bring joy and satisfaction to authors and readers alike.

I gotta ask, you'd rather stay inside? Regardless of the season? Nature has so much beauty to offer in Spring and Fall.

Thank you for staying inside and encouraging and supporting all of us.

I have to agree with you on the Solo movie. Frankly, I don't want to know. His mysterious past is one of the reasons the character is so intriguing. Anything they create is going to be disappointing to someone.

Nick Wilford said...

Hope the anthology sells a ton of copies. Glad you've been making progress!

Christine Rains said...

So exciting that Tick Tock is out in the world! It's a great collection. I might get to see the Avengers this weekend if I can bribe my kid with movie snacks. Deadpool 2 will be a date night for my hubby and I! I worry for the Solo movie too. I haven't liked what I've seen in the commercials. Have a great week! :)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Ellen, glad you're enjoying it.

Teresa, neither do I!

Nila, good for you!

Madeline, haven't seen that one yet.

MJ, that made me chuckle.

Crystal, it's not.

Jen, still one more Star Wars movie in the trilogy. This one is a stand alone like Rogue One.

Marcy, you have to see it. Hilarious.

Pat, awesome!

Shari, prepare for a shock...

Lynn, if I'm outside, I'm working on the yard. No fun. Plus there's bugs! I hate bugs.

Sandra Cox said...

Big Congrats to the Tick Tockers.
Alex, that's great that you got some writing done on your time away.
Haven't seen The Avengers yet.
Good luck getting that yard work done.

My boys are eagerly awaiting a chance to go see Infinity Wars. I've seen lots of chatter on Twitter about being crushed by some deaths so should be interesting to see who makes it and who doesn't. The hubs and I watched Morgan on night. It was the movie channels. It was a very interesting movie.

Stephen Tremp said...

Josh Brolin with a couple awesome roles these days. Life is great for him. And yeah Hans Solo could be a dud but I hopefully it will be at least above average.

Jemi Fraser said...

So excited the anthology is out!!!!
I've seen/heard so many varied comments about the Avengers movie - it's certainly causing strong reactions in everyone!

Charles Gramlich said...

I'll eventually get around to seeing Infinity War, but I'm not feeling all that excited.

Tyrean Martinson said...

Tick Tock downloaded! :)
My family and I plan to see Avengers tonight!
And, I really want Solo to be a good movie and maybe give some nods to the original book trilogy (not the later one) about his origins. However, I am just as concerned as you are about it.

Yeah, you can keep Deadpool. I'm not a fan at all. Solo will likely be fun though.

Guess I've got to see Infinity Wars because of all the recommendations (including yours). I, too, hope Solo is good & not another miscasting like Hayden Christensen. Got my copy of Tick Tock. Anxious to read it.

Hi Alex, it doesn't surprise me that you worked on the Cassa sequel in your break.

Congratulations on the release of the new anthology.

I'm definitely going to see Avengers: Infinity War. Its released in India.

Hi, Alex! As always, I enjoy your film reviews. I'd like to see "Solo," but I don't know if anyone can equal Harrison Ford as Solo. We've been watching a few free movies on tv the past week or so. Last night we saw "Crash" which won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Picture. It was fabulous! My copy of "Tick Tock" (paperback) is on its way. Can't wait to get it! Time to get reading more IWSG books! Enjoy your day!

Hi Alex!

I love Springtime! But I do write in any season. The kids saw The Avengers over the weekend and can't stop talking about it. Isn't it funny how sometimes the very idea of "taking a break" inspires more writing? Tick Tock is definitely going to the cabin with me this summer!

cleemckenzie said...

Getting work done on your Cassa sequel is fabulous. Here's to Tick Tock's success and to other IWSG successes! A lot happening this year.

Unknown said...

Yay for the anthology! I'd rather be inside too--too much distraction makes it hard to write.

Andrew Leon said...

Just because I said Thanos' motivation is the weakest part of the movie doesn't mean I think it doesn't work. It's the weakest part of an incredibly strong movie.

Mina Burrows said...

Excited for the Cassa sequel! :)

I want to see Infinity Wars. I'm going to try to see it this weekend with my kids.

I hope Solo's good too.

Liesbet said...

None of the three movies sound appealing to me. The Avengers would, if I knew who they were. :-) "Morgan" sounds a little bit like "The Shape of Water", which I recently saw, thanks to your review last month. I liked it OK, but didn't think it was Oscar-worthy.

I like your snark reference about the Star Wars Story, ALex. :-) I do like Jar-Jar Binks, so I might actually enjoy this movie. We used to call our dog Darwin "Dar-Dar Binks", because he could be so silly and clumsy!

The good thing about spring is that it's almost summer, so we can be outdoors and explore. The bad thing about spring is that it's almost summer, so I better get "all" my writing done as I'm running out of time!

Anonymous said...

Big congrats to all those in the anthology!

So glad you got some writing done on your break. That's always good to hear. Unlike me last month haha

I'm looking forward to the next Deadpool. That I'll go to the movies to go see, so you know I'm excited about it if I'm actually willing to move off the couch. :)

Is Morgan on Netflix?

Happy Wednesday!!

Carol, that's great!

Tara, I burn to a crisp and I hate bugs. Enough said.

Diedre, great!

Andrew, I thought it was a strong point.

LOL - It' autumn in the southern hemisphere and the shorter days encourage me to write more. I finally went to the movie theatre, I hadn't been in ages. I am easily distracted by spring breezes, green grass, and any blooms. Love to be outside, and almost swim season too! Avengers Infinity is on my list and I'm ready for Deadpool 2 for sure. Solo...will probably see it but I'm not camping out for it.
congrats to the Tick-Tock authors. Sounds like some crime madness awaits.
Hard to believe it's May already - enjoy!

Susan Flett Swiderski said...

We'll definitely be seeing the Avengers flick... and possibly the Deadpool one. I like the idea of a movie that gives the background story of when Solo and Chewbacca met, but for me, there can only be one actor who plays Hans Solo. Still... it might be good.

The movie I want to see is Book Club. From the previews I've seen, it looks like a hoot. Chick flick, though, so I'll probably go see it with a gal pal. As Vietnam vet, my hubby isn't a fan of Jane Fonda. (To put it mildly.)

Good luck with the anthology! The IWSG has done soooo many cools things. You should be very proud.

Suzanne, no worries.

Rhonda, probably not, but hey, free is free.

Thanks, Susan!

After watching Infinty War, I am feeling a bit hollowed out, particularly that the ending took a piece of me with it. There were several people in the theater who shouted, "What the...", unable to even finish that simple statement. If they wanted to ensure that movie goers like me would be anxious for the next movie, they did their job properly, and they also made me a little mad for caring just the tiniest bit about Thanos. I really wanted to be quite fine with my disgust with him.

I am very excited the IWSG anthology is out. Can't wait to get into it and read the various contributions.

My daughter isn't really excited about Solo so that will have to be a "solo" movie visit for me (hehe!)

Deadpool isn't on her radar either. I still need to see the first one *ducks to avoid flying paperback book*

I agree with you, Alex. The Star Wars movie, plot-wise, could definitely work. The trouble we have when we first see a film character is that we want any prequel to look just like the original character we identify with. Here's hoping. My daughter lives for Star Wars. Can't wait to see what she thinks of it. All best to you sir!

Spring inspires me to get outside, not sit inside writing. But in the evenings, maybe I'll still get some writing done. But as you know, I don't have my old, familiar, neurotic urge to write like I used to.

I might see Infinity War even though I'm not into the superhero stuff. But it still sounds like a fun flick, as does the Hans Solo prequel.

We loved Infinity Wars! All of what you said is so true. Even Winter Soldier Bucky (Sebastian Stan) was there. After getting depressed, the expected clip at the end can give one hope.

Congrats on IWSG’s third anthology. It’s finally spring but it feels like summer. But allergies is kicking my 7 year old’s ass.

Saw infinity War on Saturday. I wondered where Ant-man and Hawkeye were too. But loved it and can’t wait for part two. Wish I had the ability to time travel so I can go to 2019 and watch part two immediately after.

Can’t wait for Deadpool 2 in two weeks.

Deadpool 2 and Solo are also the only movies on my radar this May. And yes, Avengers: Infinity War was amazing!

Al, you go geek!

JQ, this one keeps poking at me.

Elizabeth, I know! A whole year.

Victoria, no one can replace Harrison Ford.

Lidy, they said where they were, I just don't remember.

May is proving itself to be a fantastic month for movies. I'm still in a little shock from Infinity War. I may need a support group. I also appreciate that you were able to review three movies this go around and not just Infinity War, which (quite honestly) is the only thing my mind has been turning over for the last week.

Congrats everyone on the anthology.

I sincerely hope that Deadpool 2 does not suck.

Hi, Alex,

Terrific review of the Avengers! I definitely want to see it!

YAY for the ANTHOLOGY! Looks amazing. Congrats to all the authors! WELL DONE and ALL THE BEST!

I LOVE spring. Since I was born in the Spring, I seem to always 'come back' with new inspiration and excitement. Happened this Spring with my new memoir.... So I totally love this season!

The anthology got top billing over Avengers and Star Wars? I'm pretty full of myself, but even I think that might be putting us a bit too high on the pedestal... ;-P

Congratulations on the latest anthology's publication!

I know my superhero-loving little brother will be seeing Deadpool, undoubtedly with his married girlfriend and her creepy husband. They love cosplaying these superheroes.

That Solo movie I couldn't care less about but The Avengers is a pretty decent movie. Thanos is a complex villain, unlike that other CGI villain in the DC universe, and I can't even imagine how much hard work went into making this one, storywise, too.

I saw my son this weekend who saw The Avengers.
"So who died?" I asked.
"Do you really want to know?" he responded.
"Yes," I said.
So he told me.
All I can say is: Good grief!

I haven't seen the new Marvel movie yet, and I won't again this weekend. Too much is going on. It's okay though, maybe one day next week I'll surprise my son and go. Movies on a weeknight are always a fun (and rare) surprise.

Funny about being inside. Is that because of allergies? Allergies really bug me. Thanks for the awesome movie info and have a great week!

What a great post, Alex, as usual.

I don't think the season matters either.

Congrats on the release of Tick Tock. I look forward to it.

Infinity War looks amazing. Glad it's highly recommended.

Morgan sounds interesting.

I agree with you; Solo could be great or awful.

I think I do write a little more in the spring and summer. Not necessarily because of the weather- but I think it is because it is light out longer and I feel more energetic after work. :)

Congrats to all who have stories in Tick Tock!

I'm a 50/50 split on being outside. I love to paint, so nothing keeps me away from that! Congrats on Tick Tock! Avengers rocked!!! I agree! Did you see Deadpool with Celion Dion, video? If you haven't Alex, look it up and have a great laugh! Take Care!

Michael, I've been watching a lot of movies...

Let the season continue to inspire, Michael!

CD, just enjoy it.

Carrie-Anne, that sounds odd...

Sandra, yes - half of them!

Lexa, allergies, bugs, dirt - you name it!

Crow, I will!

With regards to writing, for me, seasons don't really dictate whether I'm in a mood or not.
I've popped in by the Tick Tock blog.
Congrats on the work you've put in towards your Cassa sequel!

So, I'm caught up now. Sorry I'm late for the IWSG, but at least I made it in the same month! Got my anthology and can't wait to read it! I watched all of Frankenstein... the next season better pull it back together! Can't wait to see Deadpool, and, loved loved loved the "Star wars Fan" t-shirt!! Hahaha!
