Star Wars: The Last Jedi Movie Review
I’m still trying to digest everything I saw. At two and a half hours, they pack in a lot.
All of the action sequences are amazing. There are so many that would be the grand finale in most films.
This movie had a lot of surprises. There were directions they could’ve gone but didn’t, and I appreciated that. There were also some reveals and yet more mysteries layered into the mix.v Everyone is great in their role. (It is bittersweet to see Carrie Fisher in her last role though.) The characters are fleshed out even more, revealing their true nature. There are a lot of things addressed that I can’t touch on without spoilers, but safe to say the movie has depth.
The movie also has some great touches of humor. BB8, Fin, the porgs – they all have their moments.
Special effects? Amazing. And I appreciate that Yoda was a puppet again and not the cheesy animated thing from the trilogy we all want to forget.
Rogue One and Empire Strikes Back still edge it out, but this was a big favorite of the Star Wars movies.
Help Geekdom House create a no-kill shelter for all the porgs purchased as Christmas presents and discarded.
Psych: The Movie
Shawn and Gus are back and it’s like they never left.
It’s three years later and everyone is now in SanFrancisco. Shawn and Juliet are living together, Shawn and Gus have a new office fashioned after the Chinese pawn shop in Gremlins, and Juliet has a stalker.
Everyone is back and it’s more hilarious than ever.
Timothy Omundson (Lassie) suffered a stroke just before filming began and the script was rewritten. He is in one small scene though.
The ending is for the fans. That’s all I’ll say.
If you are a fan, then you will delight in this reunion. And clamor for more!
(Did you hear about Pluto? That’s messed up.)
Alita: Battle Angel
A live action of this Japanese anime has been in the works for years. Directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron, it’s due out next year. And it looks really good:
For comparison, here is the Japanese anime version which came out around twenty-five years ago. This was my first exposure to Alita and remains one of my favorite anime. It’s only an hour and two stories in one film, but it was well done. This is the entire movie, but you can watch a minute of it to get a feel for the film’s style. I think the live action one will stay true to the feel of the story.

This month is all about Christmas music. I couldn’t find a traditional song I really dug, so I picked something different. I selected one that most people are familiar with – Trans Siberian Orchestra’s Wizards in Winter. Plus, this is the video with the house Christmas lights all in sync.
Have you seen the new Star Wars film yet? Giving anyone a porg for Christmas? Did you watch the Psych special? Excited about Alita? What Christmas music movies you?
Mini-Alex would like to wish everyone a blessed Christmas and Happy New Year!
I’ll be offline December 22 through January 2, enjoying the holiday season. (I will check in on comments, Twitter, and emails though. And finally catching the wide release of The Shape of Water.) See you January 3 for the IWSG post and announcement of the anthology contest winners.
I want a porg for Christmas! They were adorable. I thought the movie was good, but not great, actually. I liked The Force Awakens more. Still way better than the prequels, though.
I didn't know about Chrys' blogfest. I'll have to check it out!
Have a great Christmas!
Now I'm really looking forward to seeing the new Star Wars movie. Sounds like some interesting twists to look forward to. Wishing you and your family a joyous Christmas and Happy New Year.
They can now sell more toys. How long before they are hated as much as the ewoks? lol Another win indeed though. The Psych movie was great. Hopefully they get to make more. Enjoy the blog break and hopefully a great Christmas is had at your pad!
Sounds like a Star Wars movie to get excited about!
Interesting that Hollywood is picking up an anime--sounds like a great concept.
Porgs make great stocking stuffers. Thanks for the review of The Last Jedi. I love it when a movie is stacked with epic scenes that would be reserved for the culmination of lesser films. I had no idea that Shawn & Gus are back in a new movie. It's a shame about the Lassie actor suffering a minor stroke and having limited involvement. That's a flick I want to see!
I never tire of listening to the Trans Siberian Orchestra. Thanks for posting that rousing number.
Have a fine week, good buddy Alex!
The entire family is a fan of The Psyche Series, but I can't believe we came in halfway, so we didn't watch it and looking forward to watching it on demand. I've also heard the new Star Wars movie wasn't their favorite, but I can't wait to see it.
I love so many Christmas songs I could never pick just one. Enjoy your Christmas break. Have a Blessed Christmas!!!
We'll probably go see Star Wars this weekend. Can't wait. Love that franchise so much.
Wishing you and your wife a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Alex. Be well!
Good Morning Alex!
I have Star Wars and Psych on my list to see. TSO is a great selection. I saw their show 2 yrs ago just phenomenal. My senses were on overload, such a joy to see, hear and feel.
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas! May 2018 birth better dreams into the world.
Peace, light and love always!
Cool they've kept Star Wars at high quality entertainment.
Merry Christmas and all the best for the new year, Alex.
Yeh for Tyrean!
Saw Wind River over the weekend - very good!
Have a wonderful Christmas, Alex! And Happy New Year! :)
I'll be honest with you, I don't have any desire to see the latest installment of Star Wars. The last flick was such a disappointment and so I don't want to see this one if it costs me anything. Now...if it comes available on Netflix or Amazon Prime then I may consider taking a peek. I'm glad that you enjoyed the film, though. I think the original trilogy is hard act to follow.
TSO totally gets ya movin'! I like listening to their stuff a little for Christmas. It's definitely a nice change up from traditional carols. Thanks for sharing the dance floor with the 4M gals. Have very joyful & blessed Christmas, my friend!
Thanks for the new star war's review, Alex. It just popped up on FireTV and I decided to wait for reviews. Very disappointed in the new Blade Runner film. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Sarah, watching paint dry is better than the prequels.
Pat, I'll take another Psych movie anytime.
Shady, it was a shame, but I'm glad they were able to have one scene for him.
Madeline, I want to see that one.
Cathy, TSO does put one in the Christmas spirit.
I do very much want to see Star Wars, but we won't get a chance this week. I did get in a small binge session on Netflix and watched One Punch Man. Hilarious! Have a happy Christmas and a fantastic new year. :)
Hey Alex. Tim has a 10-day Christmas staycation coming up and we're going to go see it then. Happy Christmas Break to you, as well. Cheers and boogie boogie.
My only solid opinion of Last Jedi(man! you can't just say "Jedi" anymore and have people know what movie you mean!) is that it's magnitudes better than Force Awakens.
We're going to have to catch Psych soon. I didn't realize it was "out."
I have never heard of a porg before. Enlightenment is one of many reasons I follow your blog, Alex. :D
I hope you have a wonderful Christmas holiday and a beautiful and happy new year.
Thanks for the review, Alex! I haven't seen Star Wars yet, but I will soon.
I'm looking forward to Psych, as well.
And, thanks for the shout out! I re-edited my post to include a screenshot of the first IWSG on instagram post.
Star Wars has just gone to the top of my must-see list, it sounds amazing. I enjoyed finding out more about you and your books at Carter Novels, thanks for the link.
I love traditional Christmas carols and don’t even mind when my local supermarket starts playing them in October! Other than that, my all-time favourite Christmas song is Fairytale of New York with the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl.
Enjoy your break, have a Happy Christmas and the best New Year.
The movie was great, although watching Leia floating around like Mary Poppins was a bit surreal. And they pulled out all the stops. I thought the movie was over at one point, and then they had another big battle. It'll take multiple viewings to pick up on all the stuff in this movie.
Oh wow, I used to love Psych! I'll have to check out the movie just for nostalgia's sake.
I'm still on the fence regarding going to the theater or wait for Last Jedi to come out on PPV. Your review might push me off the fence and into the theater.
Loving Wizards in Winter lights.
I will be seeing the New Star Wars this week. Thanks for the review.
we really liked Last Jedi, but I could have edited out 30 minutes to make it even tighter. Loved light saber stuff. All good acting and plot lines. Very satisfying film.
My fave Christmas movie is Love Actually. I can listen to that soundtrack any time of the year.
Merry Christmas to mini-Alex, you, and your wife. Enjoy the season.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the new Star Wars movie. I don't go to the movies very often, but this is one I definitely want to see. Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year. Cheers - Ellen
Ivy, you and Tim have a great time.
Andrew, it was on last week.
Tyrean, that's cool!
Barbara, thanks for checking out my page. And I wonder what that song would sound like if it were porgs singing instead of Pogues?
Ken, I know! I thought it was wrapping up as well, but we still had a lot more.
Huntress, fall off the fence and go see it.
Joanne, it was a really long film.
Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!
I've always loved Simon and Garfunkel's "Seven o'Clock News/Silent Night" (whose ending always gives me chills), Stevie Wonder's "Someday at Christmas," John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)," and the version of "Stille Nacht" from the 2005 film Joyeux Noël (about the 1914 Christmas Truce).
I'm saving the Last Jedi for later, but looking forward to seeing it. My son called to make me jealous about what I've missed and he hasn't.
Have to see Psych, too. I enjoyed the quirky sit-com.
Merry Christmas and Happy 2018, Alex. See you in January.
The plan is to see Star Wars tomorrow. Can't wait!
Congrats to Tyrean!
I'm still upset about Pluto. LOL! I'm actually planning to start watching Psych The Movie today during lunch. I'm hoping to see Star Wars next week. *crosses fingers*
No, I haven't seen Star Wars yet. I will. Probably not until after school gets out (we have another week).
Far as I'm concerned, "Star Wars" ended with "Return of the Jedi." I highly doubt we'll be seeing the latest one.
How do they get the Christmas lights to sync with the music? Must be some great editing. Really enjoyed that one...
Cherie, you'll really enjoy it.
John, it takes a lot of money and technical know-how, but a lot of people do it.
Hubby gone to see the Star Wars movie tonight with some friends. I'm sure he will enjoy it. I hope you enjoy your Christmas break, Alex.
Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year.
A very happy Christmas to you and yours. Enjoy your break.
Congrats to Tyrean. Instagram is my favourite social media so I'm sure to catch the IWSG there. 2018 is shaping up to start with a bang! Wow! Jan 3 for the IWSG!
Thanks for all you do for the blogosphere, Alex! Have a happy Christmas and a blessed 2018. Enjoy your break!
I can't wait to see the new Star Wars. But if I hear another person bashing it for being "politically correct" or "made for SJWs" then I'm going to scream.
I hope you have a great holiday!
Many blessings and much love to you, Mrs. Ninja, and Mini Alex.
Enjoy Christmas and have a Happy New Year, Alex.
I loved your Christmas choice... Trans Siberian Orchestra’s Wizards in Winter. Totally cool my friend, and a very MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and yours! HUGS
I think I am one of the last remaining people in the industrialized world who has not seen Star Wars. However, Psych sounds like my kind of movie. Enjoy your time off and all that holiday season has to offer.
I won't see the new Star Wars until it comes out on video, but I am looking forward to it. As for Christmas music that moves me, I'll admit the monotonous drone of "The Little Drummer Boy" does it for me every single time I hear it. Enjoy your holiday break!
Looking forward to seeing the new Star Wars some time over the holiday. Hope you have a joyful Christmas, Alex.
We'll wait until the Disneyland-lines fade before we see Star Wars.
Just went to see Justice League. I don't care about critiques, just watched Aquaman/Jason Mamoa.
We'll wait until the Star Wars lines shrink a little. But will definitely see it.
We saw Justice League today. I don't really care about reviews. Jason Mamoa held my attention.
I've heard good things about The Shape of Water. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas. Take care.
As a long time Star Wars fan I was a tad disappointed in Rogue 1. But I accepted that new fans needed to be acclimated to the world. This review sounds like Last Jedi steps up.
So many movies I want to see.
Wizards in Winter is my favorite TSO. I think. I love TSO.
Merry Christmas a d Happy New Year Alex.
Amazing! That was what my grandees said upon coming back! There were many 'innovative things' in this Star Wars unlike others - just as what you've said, Alex. Hank is not into movies but will make a point to see this one. Wishing you Merry Christmas, Alex and Happy hols!
Glad you enjoyed The Last Jedi. I'm more apt to watch a Star Trek film over a Star Wars film but will give it a tryy. Will wait until it cones out on DVD most likely.
And I've heard for years about a possible live film adaptation on the anime Akira. It's the anime, along with Vampire Hunter D, that me a fan of Japanese anime. Still unsure whether to hate the idea or be excited about it. What if it becomes another Aeon Flux or Ghost in the Shell?
Merry Christmas to you, Alex! And a very Happy New Year too.
I'm not a Star Wars fan, so don't plan to see the latest instalment (shocking, I know), and I don't understand the controversy. Why are so many people up in arms about this movie? What's the big deal?
Thanks for not giving any spoilers about The Last Jedi -- I've been avoiding most reviews because of that problem. I'm glad you enjoyed and I expect I will too. Trouble is, this is the time of year when there are so many great flicks thanks to the piling-on for Oscar nods.
Have a perfect Christmas and New Year's, Alex!
Wonderful post as always Alex. I would like to take thos oppourtunitynto wish you and your family A Happy Christmaas and thanks for all your support you have given me.
JE, and if I hear one more person say it's the worst movie ever just because the story wasn't what he wanted, I'll scream.
Rhonda, you and my mother. She doesn't like science fiction.
Susan, my wife had her eyes on him as well.
Donna, Rogue One just might be my favorite.
Lidy, let's hope it doesn't!
JH, because it wasn't exactly the story some die hard fans wanted.
Thanks and Merry Christmas everyone!
I'm really glad you liked Star Wars. I've been trying desperately to avoid spoilers since I don't see it til Christmas Eve, but I've heard a lot of back and forth about it being Good and/or about it being the worst star wars ever and that it needs to be struck from the canon.
So....ya know. haha
We just saw it and enjoyed it pretty well.
Have a wonderful Christmas and blogging break! I think the next movie my girls want to see will be The Greatest Showman, which is a big step up from Disney princess cartoons. So I'm psyched!
Thank you for the Star Wars review. I just inducted my kids with the very first Star Wars movie this week and I am thrilled that the love carries on. Have a happy holiday season with your family and thank you to Tyrean as a new admin :)
After noticing spoilers in the comments to the first review that I read for The Last Jedi, I've hesitated from reading others, knowing that yours would be the review to read. Now, I'm looking forward to getting the Blueray since being in a wheelchair rules out cinema visits - yes, there are wheelchair areas but too close to the screen.
Seasons greetings, Nadolig Llarwen and all the very best for 2018.
Thanks for the movie reviews, Alex. I'm looking forward to seeing The Last Jedi. I've never been into anime, but the new Alita movie looks good. Your website at Carter Novels looks great! Wishing you and your wife a blessed Christmas and a fantastic New Year!
As per usual, you have supplied your adoring fans with some informative movie reviews. Thank you for that.
May you and your loved ones have a most joyous holiday season, my thoughtful friend.
Penny's human dad,
I'll see the Last Jedi over the break - can't wait!!! :)
My brother can't wait to see Star Wars. Thanks for the reviews Alex!
Wishing you and your loved ones a Very Merry Christmas and Here's to a Great 2018!!!
So glad to hear you loved the Last Jedi. I have heard only good things about it and was curious to hear what you thought.
Enjoy your time off your blog. :)
Robert, there will always be haters.
Sorry you can't go Roland, but I bet viewing it at home on Bluray will be a better experience anyway.
Christmas blessings to everyone!
Star Wars was awesome. It was so much fun, which is a big part of what I look for in movies these days, and it was visually amazing. It just had some beautiful scenes and shots. My only complaint was that it was maybe a bit too long - I thought it was over at one point and then realized, wait, there's another half hour left?
The fanboy hate for it is ridiculous. They hate the special editions, they hated the prequels, they hated Force Awakens, now they hate this. What do you possibly want? Just to sit at home and watch Empire Strikes Back on VHS?
Battle Angel Alita weirds me out. Why oh why did they give her those giant stupid anime eyes?
TSO is amazing. One of the best stage shows around.
I watched the Last Jedi amazed by all the action which erupted into duel between Ray and Kylo Ren, so fantastic was the plot I sat stunned really and by the time it was over, heck wheres the replay button? have a neat Christmas Alex and a happy New Year!
I saw Star Wars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I loved the first one and this was even better.
The house lighting up to the tune is fun. I haven't seen the new Star Wars movie. Not sure I will (can I admit that out loud)? I liked the original three, but never got far after that as far as being a big fan goes. ;)
Wishing you a wonderful, very blessed Christmas as well!
Love the song you chose to highlight for this post. Trans-Siberian Orchestra has always been a favorite band for me to listen to this time of year. Hope you have a fantastic holiday!
The Shape of Water looks very interesting. The creature looks a bit like the water guy in Hellboy. Haven't seen the latest Star Wars but would love to. Good luck to the latest IWSG venture and Tyrean! Hope your holidays are relaxing and fun. Best wishes for 2018!
Hi Alex, I might not get over to visit you again before the New Year so just wanted to wish you a Very Happy Christmas and best wishes for 2018.
CD, I thought the same thing - there's still another thirty minutes? No idea why all the hate. Go hate the first three episodes instead.
Rosey, if you skipped the second three, that was a wise choice.
Merry Christmas, everyone!
I am running late this week (in everything) but wanted to wish you a Merry Christmas! Yay to Tyrean joining the team :)
I've actually gotten to see both movies you reviewed! Absolutely loved Psych. It stayed true to the series and it felt like home when I sat down to watch it with my husband. Had lots of fun at Star Wars too, and thought the porgs were adorable.
My hubby and oldest son went to see The Last Jedi earlier this week and loved it. Number One Son said he feels it's the best Star Wars movie of all of them, given what is contained and what they were aiming for. I'll need to see it on the big screen. I'm pretty sure either of them would be willing to see it a second time if I ask.
I'm psyched about a Psych movie! That show and its combination of characters is a favorite in our house. I'm glad to hear it's solid.
Have an incredible, blessed Christmas and we'll see you after the holidays are a memory. Take care, Alex.
I didn't know about this movie Psych: The Movie, sounds interesting. Happy Holidays! I will catch Star Wars and I really enjoy Trans Siberian Orchestra. Thanks for sharing
Hi Alex - thanks for all you do for us .. enjoy the Christmas season with your wife, family and of course mini-Alex ... take care, relax, and restock for the New Year - good luck with all you do ... with blessings and peace - cheers Hilary
Have a Merry Christmas, Alex.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays, Alex. See you in 2018.
What on earth is a porg? I like your description of the Star Wars movie and will be sure to see it at a later date. Didn't realise Carrie Fisher had played in it at all. Will look at the movie you posted later.
Hope you are enjoying your Christmas break.
Happy Christmas and best wishes for 2018, Alex.
Loni, that's great! I hope they do another Psych movie.
Lynda, I think it's one of my favorites now.
Jo, she had a big role in the film.
Merry Christmas, everyone!
We're going to see the new Star Wars film next week. I've heard mixed reviews about it but I think it's a must see especially as it's the last film of Carrie Fisher's.
Have a great Christmas, Alex x
Hi! Just here from MMMM. LOVE TSO, wish they were still touring!
Kim @ The ReInVintaged Life
Hi Alex, I hope your Christmas was wonderful. Enjoy your time off and have a blessed New Year! (Luke and I saw TSO in concert a few years ago. They're one of our favorites at Christmas. Loved the mini-Alex nativity.)
I'm glad the Star Wars movie was good. It's amazing that they can still create good movies with that theme. It's been going a while!
I like the TSO video. Pretty cool how the lights are synced.
Hope you had a Merry Christmas! Best wishes for 2018!
I feel like I need to watch The Last Jedi again, because so much happened and it's hard to process it all. The porgs were cute, though :)
I love watching lights synced to TSO's Wizards of Winter. There's a place in Tulsa that does it and it's so fun to watch!
Rebecca, the mixed reviews come from die hard fans who just wanted the film to go in another direction.
DL, it was!
Sherry, that first film tapped into something big.
Elizabeth, they did pack a lot in. And that would be really cool to see.
I have not had a chance to catch the Star Wars movie. I need to see if my kiddo wants to catch it. Unlike Thor and Justice League, she hasn't come right out and said she wanted to see it. If not, it will be a date-with-myself night to catch it before it leaves the theaters.
I really enjoyed the video of the house with the TSO music playing, though, I wonder what it is like to be their neighbor?
Enjoy your holiday time :-)
I'm seeing The Last Jedi tonight! *is excited* Hope you had a great Christmas and Happy New Year!
Hope your Christmas was wondrous and your new year brings you much success and happiness.
Finally got to see The last Jedi over Christmas and it was pretty awesome. I'll miss Princess Leia :(
I thought The Last Jedi was amazing - very well done, and distinctly Star Wars while also not being what I expected from a Star Wars film. Though with that ending, I now have no idea at all where they're going to go next, which is kind of awesome. ^_^
And I love the Alita trailer as well. I used to read the manga, and the movie looks like they captured the look of it perfectly. Definitely looking forward to that one.
Happy New Year Alex. Hope you have a joyful 2018! Juneta
I hope you have a great New Year!
I haven't seen Star Wars yet, but I'm looking forward to getting to do that.
I finally saw the Last Jedi. It was really good; better than I imagined.
I wouldn't have minded getting a porg for Christmas.
I've always been partial to different versions of White Christmas.
I hope your holiday went well and your new year is even better than the last. Happy New Year.
Angela, you definitely want to go see it. And if you didn't like TSO, you'd be one unhappy neighbor.
Jennifer, did you enjoy it?
Sandra, it was!
Marcy, I know, that was sad.
Mason, it's nice to have hope in Star Wars films again.
Toi, glad you enjoyed it!
Happy New Year, everyone!
I've yet to see the new Star wars but want to wish you a Happy New Year to your family!! Thanks for always coming to my blog even when I don't make the rounds. Lol. I'm going to do better this year!!
Happy New Year!
I did go see Star Wars and, well, like The Force Awakens, it was a good, alternate universe fanfiction. The young actors are superb and it was really good to see Luke and Leia together again. And yes, I did tear up a couple of times during Carrie Fisher's scenes. And the porgs? Please? I'll adopt them all!!
Psche: The Movie was fantastic! We laughed so hard. As soon as it's on DVD, it's coming home with me. Even if just to hear Shawn and Gus' new "Suck it" song.
And if The Shape of Water was showing anywhere near me, I'd be there in a heartbeat. It looks fantastic!
Have a wonderful New Year and, yes, I'll see you Wednesday for IWSG :D
I have porg jammies, need I say more?
Hubs and I saw the new Star Wars last night and looooooved it. Daughter and I are text-swooning over shirtless Adam Driver. Really a treat, and a good example of how to plant interesting seeds for future episodes.
I've been really torn about watching the new Star Wars. The commercials just haven't grabbed me, but more than that is I haven't recovered from losing Han and I think I will cry too much knowing that Carrie is gone. :( Maybe on DVD.
We saw Psych! I totally missed when it was out and then found it on Demand! It was so much fun. They really did a great job!
So glad the holidays are over!
Hi Alex! Hope your holiday break was great!
I still haven't seen the Star Wars movie yet. It's on the list to see this week with my kids. Alita looks amazing!!! I want to see it. I haven't seen the original but that looks insanely cool.
It's so great to see the IWSG going from strength to strength. Congrats to Chrys, and the other authors featured this week :-)
