The Remnant – Book to Film Possibilities

Today I welcome fellow Dancing Lemur Press author, William Michael Davidson!

As an author, I obviously think it would be pretty awesome if The Remnant was made into a film. I've always seen it more as something that would make a good television series or an original show on Netflix. Having said that, I know there are some pretty sensitive issues that The Remnant deals with such as faith, belief in God, and where our culture is at with those issues. Because of this, a part of me would be surprised if someone ever did make this into an actual film. And if it was made into a film, I wonder how watered-down the whole book would be to make it "politically correct." To be honest, I don't see the book as just a Christian novel. Yes, I'm a Christian. Yes, I wrote the book. But I don't see this book as having an agenda. Still, however, I think there is a message beneath the surface and I wouldn't be surprised if a filmmaker would take some of those ideas out of a movie version to make it more mainstream.

So, could I see something happening with a film? Yes. But I would worry about what the end product would be and how much it would capture the original "heart and soul" of the novel.

But don't get me wrong. If I received a call from Steven Spielberg and he wanted to make it into a movie, I would be last one complaining.

Movie Review

Blood Father
An ex-con finds his lost daughter and has to protect her from drug lords who want her dead. Starring Mel Gibson, Erin Moriarty, Diego Luna, and William H. Macy.
This film came out last year and I’d heard good things about it.
It’s a man search for redemption with his daughter. Gibson always plays the perfect hero, but here he is damaged, vulnerable, and looking to turn his life around. The interactions between father and daughter were great and some of the best moments of the film.
It’s not overly violent, but it is punctuated with extreme moments of violence.
While I did have problems with a couple small aspects, overall I really enjoyed the film.
Available on NetFlix – recommended.

When Fans Make Your Day

I want to give a shout out to two special ladies who made my day last week!

Tess Julia had this to say:
I also wanted to give a shout out to Alex Cavanaugh for his book CassaFire, which I finished reading recently.
I think I have a bit of a crush on the main character Byron, and trust me, if they ever made a movie based on his series I'd be in line to see it! Really well written, definitely on par with Star Wars and Star Trek. I'm not even a sci-fi fan but I enjoyed both books so far and will be getting the rest of his books.

Lauren Bambrey, who blogs HERE, sent out this tweet and reply:
@LaurenBambrey - re read CassaStar a couple of weeks ago. Still reduced me to tears 6th time through!
@AlexJCavanaugh - Sixth time reading CassaStar??? Oh wow. Thank you! Laura, you just made my day. Still sorry I made you cry though...
@LaurenBambrey - One of my faves; will be read many more times too! Crying is good- sign of writing a beautiful friendship!

Thanks, ladies! You rock.

The Remnant- there is always the hope of a movie magic developing. Wishing you well William, Steven's on the line! Looking forward to Blood Father on NetFlix since it is recommended. The WEP is most welcomed. It's another OLN more or less. It's going to be fun! Tess has a most appropriate shout out - most deserving Alex!

WEP's up there - excited to see, and looking forward to it!

Belief in God persecuted? Yes, I can see a world like that - the first 'believers' (of every religion) have been persecuted always. The book sounds interesting. Wishes for its success both as a read and a film.

Hi, Alex!

William H. Macy is one of my favorite actors and I am eager to see Blood Father. I remember your review of Haken. On this track I appreciate how they simmer and suddenly explode in a flurry of precision musicianship.

Have a great week, good buddy!

Elizabeth Spann Craig said...

I could maybe see my books as TV shows instead of films (more 'Murder, She Wrote-esque).

Blood Father sounds a little grim for me, although I do like Macy.

Love Mini Alex with the pens. :)

THE REMNANT does make one stop and think where would we be if faith was banned. Congrats to Jeremy for the release of the current Six Strings and to J.L. for her release in Valentine Pets & Kisses 2. I watched Blood Father and was surprised. It was much better than I thought it was going to be. Alex, thanks for being a part of William's tour.

The Remnant has me a bit intrigued. I may have to read that one. A nice shout out to the ladies who are enjoying your books. Byron is def a strong character. I feel that way about Dragon of the Stars. I fell in love with the characters Aden and Tamsin.

In the back of the drawer .. ha an idea just came to mind.

Have a good day Alex!

Alex,

First off... THANK YOU, I really do appreciate your help, no words could ever express that. Second, I have to turn in my film card as I only know three of the "Earth" films. :)

Great list of people here and their great accomplishments, hopes that everyone finds their success. I am off to cause havoc on the world, take care my friend.

I can totally see my book as a movie. Sure wish someone wanted to make it!

Trivia:

1. ?
2. Oblivion (loved this movie)
3. Planet of the Apes (I think)
4. Reign of Fire?
5. The Book of Eli (another awesome movie)
6. ?
7. Planet of the Apes reboot

I can totally see a world where religion is persecuted or outlawed since religion is often at the root of so many conflicts.

Congrats to those with new releases and for making the IWSG swag available!

Congratulations to William. I think the best thing about having a book adapted is you can sit back and let someone else show you how they interpreted your words. That's the way I'd prefer it, if I was ever in that position *crosses fingers, wishes really hard*

Natalie Aguirre said...

Congrats to William on his new book. I'd be worried about having a book adapted to the screen given how some of them just don't do the story justice. But it'd be a thrill.

Really enjoyed Erik's interview.

The remnant does sound very intriguing. I love the ninja challenge by the way. I will have to get my order in on the awesome pens, and add your movie choice to my list. It all sounds really great :)

Alex, thank you for the movie review. Unfortunately, Blood Father isn't available for streaming at Netflix. :( It's great to see you on the dance floor with the 4M crew again. Pareidolia has an interesting, futurist sound with this mewsic selection. This is something I can listen to every now and then but I appreciate the intro. I will check out more of their tracks on YouTube to see how well my ears adapt to their style. Have an awesome, blessed week, my friend!

Blood Father is already on my To Watch list! Looking forward to Arrival, which is out next week on iTunes, I believe.

Yeh for awesome fans! :)

I think your Cassa books would make good movies Alex. Not sure how they would do the Kargrandes if they tried Dragon of the Stars though.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Thanks, Hank! And first despite the post didn't go live when it was supposed to.

Nila, I can see it happening.

Shady, that's why it's my favorite song. You will really appreciate Macy in the film.

Elizabeth, yours would be great as a series.

Mason, happy to host him. And Blood Father surprised me as well.

Truedessa, you did indeed.

Jeremy, you're welcome! And only three?

Marcy, you got three right.

Erika, take up his challenge!

Cathy, sorry, you have to add it to your queue. Glad to be back in the ring again. Haken does take several listens, but then it is prog rock.

Jo, definitely CGI.

The Remnant sounds like a very interesting book. Not sure if you're familiar with Patty Jansen's Ambassador series. Some of the humanoid species view humanity with suspicion due to the fact that some humans are believers. Religion always makes for a fascinating theme in speculative fiction.

That was great feedback on your books, Alex.

Wishing the best of success to William. I hope the book does get made into a movie. Our society needs as many positive message books with a Christian slant as we can get. These days I'd say about 40% of the movies my wife and I watch are Christian films or stories with positive message themes. Thankfully more of these are being made and I find them actually quite well done. It's nice to watch a film without profanity and gratuitous sex scenes--also it's proof that movies like this can be done and be done well.

A Beer for the Shower said...

The Remnant sounds really interesting. I'm gonna check it out. As for the movie deal, let's be honest here, it's easy to say as writers that we'd have integrity and only accept a movie deal if it upheld the book's values, but... really, who's going to turn down a movie deal? If Michael Bay came to us right now and said I'm going to turn your comedy novel into an action thriller starring Vin Diesel as Tuck Watley and we'll pay you millions of dollars, we'd cash that check before the ink dried.

Christine Rains said...

Congrats to William! His book was amazing, and I could totally see it as a movie. I see mine more as series on HBO or Netflix. Too much to tuck into one film. Those are wonderful compliments from your fans, Alex. I made someone's day today as she won my newsletter giveaway. She said she was nearly in tears as it was the first thing ever she won. That made my day.

Liz A. said...

Is #6 Logan's Run?

I don't see a future where a belief in God is persecuted. As a non-Christian, I see a future where all beliefs are welcome. There seems to be this fear among the Christian community that those of us who aren't want to take it away from those who are. We don't. We just want our beliefs respected as well. That can't be regulated.

I'd have to finish a book before I could see it as a movie...

Under Communist rule, they did ban the practice of following your religion but it never worked. My mom , who lived under Hitler and then Communist rule before she escaped remembered how it was strongly discouraged but people celebrated anyway. No matter what, it will not happen because people will always find a way to honour their faith. I forgot about that Mel Gibson movie because it did sound good. I am certain he played it because of his own personal issues he dealt with in the very public eye. It must make you feel so proud and humbled by the reaction to your books Alex. As for Trivia...1. Wall E?? 2. Oblivion 3. Soylent Green?? 4. That terminator movie whose title I can't remember:) 5. Book of Eli I think. 6. Logan's Run (I am Box!) 7. No clue!

#3 is Soylent Green (I knew it wasn't Planet of the Apes--Chuck Conners wasn't in that, so I had to think what other futuristic movie was Charlton Heston in (because I'm a big fan) and then I remembered!!)
#6 is Logan's Run (got that one with just Michael York).

I've seen #2, but only knew that after seeing the movie title in some of the comments. And would you believe I saw all THREE of these movies in the theatre (when they were released)? Yep!

Congrats to William. The Remnant looks like a good one. I can say that I definitely thought CassaStar had a very filmic quality, would make a great movie. Like William says though, it might be disconcerting having someone else get their hands on something that's so dear to you and wondering what they will do with it, but it would be an exciting process for sure!

As a preteen, I had such grandiose dreams of my Atlantic City books, both the ones I was writing and all the spin-off series I had planned, being turned into successful TV movies and soap operas for the preteen and teenage set. I still have some of these plans in an old folder, with a long list of awards, going from AA to ZZ (e.g., Amazing Actor, Spiciest Fight, Zaniest Zealot). As an adult, I'd love to see my books made into films, though I'd want to have a lot of creative control. I don't expect a movie will stay 100% true to the book it's based on, but I don't like when a movie radically alters characters or introduces a new storyline.

I'm guessing #3 is Soylent Green.

Susan Kane said...

My problem with movie titles is that they drift away into the brain and resurface a few hours later. The only one I didn't see was P.ofApes, reboot. Enough is enough.

I don't know if I could see my book as a movie - for some reason when I picture it, I think of the old Hercules movie, except with different actors - as if I'm afraid that the nagi in the book would be played by plastic medusa toys. I don't know. It would still be pretty awesome, though. And, I'm not sure how they would handle the God-moments in there, when Clara is praying and she has visions.

If a producer would want to take a book I wrote and make it into a movie, I'd be willing to see a lot of "adjustments" made to fit it to screen. After all, books and movies of the same title can be drastically different and I think viewers/readers see them as separate art.

That's the thing--I think all of us realize what a movie contract could do for our careers, but we also realize that if that happened, we'd hand over control to the screenwriters. They're going to do what's best to make it marketable to audiences. As long as they don't go crazy with it like Stanley Kubrick did with The Shining, how could we ever complain? Especially since it would drive so many readers to our books!

Nicola said...

Yeah, I could see my book as a movie, although I'd be interested to see how much better the screenplay dialogue would be.

Tonja said...

I know none of the movies, which is really odd. Maybe I just don't know the names of the actors in the movies. On the question of religious persecution, I am pretty sure history is filled with that. Current attempts to ban Muslims. Holocaust. I'm pretty sure a king or two in England persecuted Protestants. It's not a new theme, but one that would certainly be difficult to address in fiction.

But there are also books which I hope never to see as a film because it would collide with my imagination.

Congrats to all those you plugged. I want to see the Cassa books on screen, but do you have any casting thoughts.

Attempted the movie quiz but one problem with my illness is what it does to my memory. I recognise the films but can't place the names - same with musicians. (Will have to remember the prog rock above as sounds awesome. )

Anyway, knew that 3 must be Soylent Green as remembered Leigh Taylor-Young as the 'furniture' and even read the original story by Harry Harrison. (Remember that as just bought one of his other books - that is a link that works in my brain.)

I stared at the Michael York, Jenny Agutter, Richard Jordan and could picture the film - crystals in the hands etc - but the name had disconnected.
Hate this disease. At least, I could cheat and look at other people's answers. Logan's Run, of course. Stop rambling, Clarke.

As you know Alex, I don't write, but I paint. I have had a couple people write poems about certain pieces of my art, because they said that piece inspired them. I was very honoured!

Hey Alex. Like William, I rather fear that once my book is picked up to be made into a movie, it wouldn't have the same feel as the book. Also, it would bother me if they didn't get the proper characters. Yes, I can be very fussy:)

Exciting times.

I'm eager to read The Remnant. It has a unique plot idea for a dystopian tale.

I can always see my books as movies because I tend to create the story visually in my mind as I write. I'd love to see Dead Wrong as a film just to discover who would play Fat Ass Sammy Grick. :D

Too funny! I just read about William's book on another site. I love the world he's created here. All the best to him.

Aw, a fan did make my day recently. A librarian emailed me to say that she gave my middle grade book to one of her reluctant readers - a boy. He needed something for a book report. She said he read it in a few days and when he returned it said, "This was fantastic! When's the next one come out?" #happytears I helped a reluctant reader read. That is so cool!

I definitely think my books would make good movies, although really I think The War of Six Crowns would make a better tv series.

There's way too much going on to try and squash them into a 90min to 2hr movie.

That said, any adaption would make me nervous for the simple reason that movies always take a chunk out of a book's soul.

Oh Valentines day is just a blink away, if only I could have my say. I ran into Claire today and Oh what fun we could have if only I was ten years younger and she wasn't married. I'll stop by JL Campbell and pick up my Valentine Pets and Kisses.

Watered-down and politically correct... Seems like today that's the only way. What director would have the guts to do it right?

Congratulations, William. Great reviews, Alex. I've a soft spot for fallen heroes, so I'm happy to see Mr. Gibson doing well. Great blog full of awesome stuff. Thanks, eh.

I don't know any of the movie trivia, but I can imagine my book(s) as movies.

I come from the world of theatre design, so my stories start as movies in my head. Hmmm, did I see a shout out to Logan's Run? I believe I need to renew at Carousel.

I'd love my books to be made into movies and I'd actually like some changes to be made. If the film version is exactly the same as the print one then it seems a pointless exercise to me - plus some thing work better on a screen and some on the page.

As you know, I love Macy in Shameless. I'm adding the movie to my Watch List.

I would hate for my book to be watered down in any to be PC. That would irk me terribly. Especially if it's on a subject that I hold near and dear to me like addiction and my Faith.

I need to read William's book. I'll add Blood Father to my watch list, and I'll add a shout out on my blog for Jeremy's magazine next Friday.

Good to see you've got so many people loving your books. ^_^ As for movie stuff, I could see STARWIND as a movie, as it could fit into that whole cinematic thing pretty easily. It might be better off as fully CG animation, though, as it would require a ton of CG and costuming just to get all the characters right.

I always see my books as movies :) It's a hope all writers have that someone makes a movie from their book/s.

Like the sound of the Remnant, will pick up a Ecopy of it.

Wow, fabulous post. Something for everyone here. You certainly don't disappoint, Alex.

I see my books as films, but only in my head as I write them. I never expect to be one of the lucky few that gets a film deal, but good luck to William!

Big yay for Tess and Lauren's great comments about your books!

I think it would be hard to have an offer for a book (to be made into a movie), if you couldn't have the final say on how far it veered from the written story. Especially true with the issues going on here... potential issues. I still hope you get that S.S. call. :)

IT'S MINI ALEX!! :) and congrats to William!! it sounds like it would make an awesome Netflix original.

Alex! I hope you're doing well. I would love to learn more about the Remnant. I wonder if you've heard of the new Martin Scorsee movie Silence? I really want to see that one. I heard it's Scorsee's spiritual masterpiece.

Leslie, you did!

Elsie, the faith part is what they'd likely water down.

Sandra, yes he is!

Elizabeth, he would appreciate it.

Larry, you got five. And damn, you lucky dog! Wish they'd been on that tour when I saw it several years ago.

Mason, nothing wrong with that.

Maria, I try not to.

Hey Beth Ellyn!

I have heard of it, MsMariah. And good to have you back again.

Mel Gibson acting in a movie? I thought he was just directing. Guess I should pay better attention.

I would like to read that book before seeing the movie; The Remnant.

Not sure how I missed this post. On my way to read today's post and saw this.
I could see my Eternal Curse Series as a movie, but have the same concerns as William.
Oblivion was actually a good movie, I thought.
