Rogue One Review, TSO in Concert, Tara Tyler and Beasts, Spectral Review, Monday Music and Holiday Wishes!

Rogue One Review

Possibly the best Star Wars film ever!
Rogue One takes place just before Star Wars episode IV begins. It’s the story of those who risked everything to steal the Death Star plans.
Director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Monsters) does an excellent job with tension and pacing. The film is 2:14 hours long, but it doesn’t feel like it. It's also the first Star Wars aimed fully at adults. (If you have really young children, I recommend seeing it without them first.)
Like Empire, it’s a darker film. But that’s balanced by a memorable cast of characters, including a snarky reprogrammed Imperial droid. (Voiced by Alan Tudyk of Firefly fame, who steals the show.)
The special effects are incredible, detailed, and full. The movie moves through numerous scenes and planets, each possessing its own distinct personality. And the space fights and battle on the beach – just wow!
The first two thirds are good, but it’s the final third that elevates the movie to great.
Highly recommended! And see in 3D if possible.

I plan on seeing it again during the Christmas break…

Trans Siberian Orchestra in Concert

It’s the concert going season and what better way to kick off the Christmas holidays than with a Trans Siberian Orchestra concert!

The show is just mind-blowing. I guarantee you have never seen a concert like it. Rising platforms, a catwalk, massive projection screens, moving lights, snow, flames, explosions, fireworks, and more laser lights than a hundred concerts combined.

The twenty-plus musicians and singers are also top showmen. They know how to play to the crowd and ham for photos. Every singer possesses an amazing and commanding voice. They even had Russell Allen from one of my favorite bands, Symphony X, perform three songs. And if you’ve never heard an electric violin, you are missing out.

In addition to songs from their albums, they also told the story from their very first video about a runaway girl in an abandoned theater. There’s a narrator in between songs who plays his part to perfection. Bookending this are Christmas and other songs from their multiple discs.

If you’ve never seen them, I highly recommend you go!

And I’ll leave you with this Monday’s Music Moves Me (hosted by Xmas Dolly) song from TSO:

Don’t Judge Beasts by Tara Tyler

A rant by Professor Knotson Hardaway.

You should never judge someone based on appearances.

The human definition of a monster: an imaginary creature that is typically large, ugly, and frightening.

Please note, ugly is in the eye of the beholder. Beasts get very offended if you call them monsters. They are sentient, some much more intelligent than humans. Monsters act on animal instincts and kill for food. At first glance, beasts look different than humans, and fear is a common, instinctive reaction. Beasts understand this, but once humans realize beasts are logical beings, the term monster should never be applied in reference to them.

Beast is also a slang term the teenagers use in referring to each other or as an exclamation of surprise or loss. If a beast calls someone a monster, it is considered derogatory or a curse.

So when you come across a scary-looking individual, you can hide, but don’t call him a monster. You might be able to pull out his thorn and have a beastly friend for life.

Thanks for hosting me, Alex!

Gabe the goblin just saved his town Broken Branch Falls from splitting apart. He also revealed that humans--horrible creatures of myth and legend--may actually be part of their history! But seriously? Nah!
Now Ona, Gabe’s girlfriend, is headed thousands of miles away to Camp Cradle Rock for Spring Break seeking evidence of humans. Gabe knows better than to tell a stubborn ogress she’s crazy, so he’s letting her go and spending the break at the beach like a normal teenage beast. And he’s determined to have a good time without her, whether he likes it or not.
But when Ona goes missing, Gabe and his friends set out for the wilds of the west to find her, no matter what dangerous creatures get in his way. Not even humans.

Find Cradle Rock on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Goodreads

Spectral Movie Review

A NetFlix original film, it’s a mash of science fiction, horror, and war movie.
From the IMDB - A sci-fi/thriller story centered on a special-ops team that is dispatched to fight supernatural beings. Starring James Badge Dale, Emily Mortimer, and Bruce Greenwood.
It was a really unique concept, with actual science behind it. The suspense built as the creatures went from mere ghost images to real threats with their ability to flash-freeze anyone they touched. All hell breaks loose when the specialist who created the goggles that can see the creatures is sent in with a rescue team and it never lets up.
The effects were very impressive – handled by Weta Workshop, who did Lord of the Rings.
Something prevented it from moving up to the next level. But as a NetFlix watch, it’s definitely recommended.

Mini-Alex would like to wish all of you Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and holiday wishes! May you all be blessed this holiday season.

Who else saw Rogue One? Have you seen TSO in concert? (And if the answer to either of those is no, why not?) Know some beasts or monsters? Ever seen Spectral?
I’ll be taking time off during the holidays and be mostly offline from December 24 through January 2.
See you Wednesday, January 4 for IWSG post day and the announcement of the IWSG Anthology Contest winners!

Hubby wants to see Rogue One. He has seen all the films starting with the original back in 1977 (so he says).

Hi Alex - so glad you enjoyed Rogue One ... I'm sure I'll see it sometime! The Trans-Siberian Orchestra has incredible events ... with such excellent compositions and show stoppers - I'd like to see them at some stage. Tara's new book - good luck to her ... and have a happy and peaceful Christmas with your family and church friends helping others ... cheers HIlary

A glowing review, seeing a movie more than once!

RaveAir said...

I enjoyed very much the Rogue One. But I think the 3D wasn't necessary. K2SO was a little bit too much too me, but the whole movie was great. I'm sure I will rewatch many times.

Donna K. Weaver said...

We saw Dr. Strange this weekend and really enjoyed it. Looking forward to Rogue. And TSO? Saw them in concert a few years ago. What an amazing performance. So much great drama. :D

Merry Christmas, Alex!

Stephanie Faris said...

Hope you have a great holiday!!! I've been hearing that about the new Star Wars movie. That's saying a LOT. Star Wars fans have extremely high standards for their Star Wars movies! I'm not a fan of the franchise, but I know a lot of people who will be very, very happy.

Madeline Mora-Summonte said...

Spectral sounds pretty cool - making a note. Watched Don't Breathe over the weekend - eh. Had a lot more potential.

Have a wonderful Christmas, Alex! Wishing you and your family all the best! :)

Good Morning Alex

I have not yet seen Rogue One, but I plan to over the holiday break. I saw TSO last year and it put my senses on overload such an amazing show. I highly recommend seeing at least once you will be pleasantly surprised. The violin was electrifying.

I like to wish you a Merry Christmas thanks for touching my life with magic, giving me characters I can believe in!

Peace, light and love

Ps mini ninja sure brightens up your tree!

I experienced the Trans Siberian Orchestra a few years ago. It was definitely a must see!!!

Alex, have a nice week. And Merry Christmas!!!

Rogue One was so great! I was wondering how certain aspects would be handled and I wasn't disappointed.

Merry Christmas, Alex

Pat Hatt said...

Damn, I never expected Rogue One to be that good. Will have to see it in theatres indeed.

Very true, ugly or scary doesn't always mean bad guy.

Hope a great christmas is had at your pad, with no litterbox visits for min alex lol

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

You're first, Yvonne! Merry Christmas and thanks for your friendship.

Michael, because you have to see it a second time...

Zoltan, they actually let Alan ad-lib his lines since he continued to make everyone laugh on the set.

Donna, glad you saw Dr. Strange.

Stephanie, considering the low quality of so many of the Star Wars movies, it doesn't take much to rise above them.

Truedessa, Mini-Alex adds a nice touch.

Cathrina, it is!

Pat, let's just avoid litter boxes for a while...

Chemist Ken said...

I saw Rogue One over the weekend and loved it. But I'm beginning to wonder how much longer they can keep the magic going. A lot of these movies are beginning to look a little too similar, and I'm not sure how much farther they can take the special effects. Needless to say, I'm sure I'll still be looking forward to Star Wars 8 next year.

Ann Bennett said...

Too much good stuff at the theaters this Christmas season. I would like to see the Rogue One.

Tara Tyler's premise that beasts may have superior intellect than humans is not hard to believe when you watch the news.

Have a Merry Christmas Alex.

Christine Rains said...

I really want to see Rogue One. More so now that I know Alan Tudyk is the voice of the droid! Hehehe. I'd never run from any of Tara's beasts. I love those books! Have a wonderful Christmas, Alex, and we'll see you in the new year. :)

Stacy McKitrick said...

I wasn't sure I wanted to see Rogue One (the commercials weren't doing it for me), but now I do, so thanks for that! Honest (it wasn't sarcasm). Maybe it'll be our Christmas Eve movie.

I'm hoping to see Rogue One during the holidays.

Merry Christmas to you and your family. And a Happy New Year.

We plan on seeing Rogue One but it did not fit into this weekend. My guys at work seemed to like it okay.
Sounds like you have the Christmas spirit - movies, TSO, and mini-Alex ready to party until New Year. Enjoy your time off-line, your family, and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!! All the best

I haven't been enthusiastic about seeing Rogue One but your review might make me reconsider.

Hoping to check our Rogue One with my oldest boy this week. I've heard a few naysayers, but response so far as been overwhelmingly positive. Empire will always be my favorite, so I like the idea of a darker tale.

Tara Tyler said...

I'm very surprised by your exclamatory review! i was sure this one was going to disappoint - now I'm so happy that it didn't!
I'm excited to see it over the break now - and possibly in 3D! Woot!

Thanks so much for having me today, Alex =)
And thanks Hilary and Christine for noticing me among all the other awesome stuff!

In the words of Schwartzy - I'll be back!

I think what you get excited about in this post says what kind of nerd you are. Like, I'm not a huge Star Wars guy, but I'll probably see Rogue One because the series still intrigues me. But a Trans Siberian Orchestra concert? Now THAT'S got me giddy! I didn't even know they toured. That sounds like such a cool concert experience. Yeah, I'm jelly.

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

Probably waiting until next week to Rogue and I really want to see TSO in concert. I play their music all of December. Merry Christmas to you and your wife.

Merry Christmas, Alex! Mini Alex looks great there on the tree.

Ken, I don't think we'll see a big change in the effects over the next couple years.

Christine, he's the best part of the movie.

Stacy, go enjoy it Christmas Eve.

Bob, you will really like it then.

Tonja, don't miss it!

Tara, you're welcome!

Brandon and Bryan, you have to go! You'll probably see the West Coast group. Two tour at a time.

Julie, yes you will.

Merry Christmas everyone!

I actually saw Rogue One on opening weekend! Wahoo! Yes, it was a great movie with a wonderful cast of characters. The ending will stay with me for a long time.

Alex, TSO "This Christmas Day" is a new-to-me song and I appreciate the intro. I love the rocky Christmasy tune! I actually have "Spectral" in cue but have yet to watch it. DH & I will get around to it ASAP, though. I'm glad to read your review of it. No, I haven't seen "Rogue One" and am not planning on seeing it after seeing The Force Awakens. I prefer the Jedi to be guys. Hollywood tries to ram down our throats that women are equal in this capacity and they are not. I also have not seen TSO in concert. I really like their mewsic but I'm not a concert goer. I don't like being around very loud sounds. I value my hearing too much. lol Have an enjoyable break. I'm semi-off with scheduled posts in place but I won't be around for the weekend. Here's hoping you and your family have a blessed, joyous Christmas and may His light shine upon you guys in the coming new year! May God's blessings be yours!

I've always wanted to see Trans Siberian Orchestra in concert, but I have yet to do it. Someday I will, though.

We watched Spectral last night. Haven't seen Rogue One yet, but it will have to happen soon.

I hope you have a wonderful Christmas!

Carrie-Anne said...

I'll probably eventually see Rogue One, since I've seen all the other Star Wars films. If it's still in theatres, maybe I'll see it when I visit my parents in South Carolina next month. They took me and my little brother to see the last Star Wars film there when we visited last December.

Have a happy Christmas and New Year!

We saw Rogue One over the wkend, and agree with you! The back story was tremendous, and you are correct: last third was gripping! I'll see it again over holidays. Loved the effects to connect Rogue to SW 1.--Leia! Evil snarky guy (Van Helsing in 50s vampire movies)!

Merry Christmas to you, Alex! Christ is born!

I just saw TSO this past Saturday in Philly! Aaamaaazing. I love all their albums and they're even better live. It was worth every single penny! So so sooo good.

Can't wait to see Rogue One. I like to go when big movies have been out a few weeks already so it's not as crowded. I'm avoiding the holiday rush!

Totally agreed with you about Rogue One. It proves to me that Disney has got a real handle on this Star Wars property and that was good to see. I enjoyed all of it. Spectral was also a nice action adventure that reminds me of those old SYFY army vs monster movies only with a higher budget, better effects and a much better script. I can watch one of these a month from Netflix who continues to impress me with the shows they decide to produce. I have two in the bang that I still have to watch after I finish the CROWN which is an excellent historical epic and I love those too.

Cherie Reich said...

I think I'm going to have to find time over Christmas to see Rogue One. It looks awesome. TSO would be cool to see in concert.

Congrats to Tara! Beasts, not monsters. Check. :)

A real world fact that should be implemented everywhere with us humans.

I am hearing nothing but great reviews for this Star Wars film but I am confused about it. Is it continuing on from what we saw in the lastStar Wars film....does Mark Hamill speak in the film? I thoroughly enjoyed Rogue One, but I wouldn't say it's the best Star Wars. In my top three, though.
I think Edwards probably doesn't deserve any of the credit for that, though, since it was testing so poorly with audiences during the summer that Disney took it away from him to do re-shoots and re-cut the movie. Based on his track record of horrible films, I'm going to have to assume that Disney rescued the movie.

EEGiorgi said...

I really loved Rogue One. It covers something that was definitely a plot hole in the original movies and it does have more of a plot than any other of the movies (IMHO), so yeah, thumbs up. The only disappointment was ... well, I can't say it without spoilers, but I'm bummed that there won't be a sequel... because it's already there and with different characters, sigh. Happy holidays to you and yours Alex !!

Great combination of sounds and movies Alex, I must catch Rogue One, I can see theres going to be special effects and stealth fighters setting off explosions. Give Mini-Alex and the missus my bestest Merry Christmas!

Loved Rogue One saw early showing on the 15th as my birthday present. Love the way it played off the old expanded universe and the characters were recognizable. Only link missing from the original expanded universe was the Bothan connection, but I always did think those Bothans a little too smug and self-important anyways, lol. Great post.

I quite enjoyed Rogue One but I was hoping for more. There were a lot of distractions in it from the cgi people who were close but not quite perfect, to the little easter eggs scattered throughout. Even some of the pretty landscapes were distracting and not as original as I'd hoped. (This is coming from a cgi artist so I'm picky in that area). BUT I loved that a particular question was filled in about the original movies. That was awesome. And yes, the ending made the movie.

Hey Alex, we're waiting for the crowds o die down and watch it at the IMAX. We need our elbow room but it's fun to walk by the theatres and see all the hard work fans have put into their costumes as they line up to watch the movie.

And I'm checking out Spectral now. Sounds like my kind of show.

Merry Christmas and have a happy safe healthy prosperous New year to you and yours!

I'm so glad the Rogue One was good. I was so worried given it was essentially a spin-off, although I'd be lying if I didn't admit I was MORE excited about this one then Episode 7 (as it finally wasn't following the goddamn skywalkers in their quest to destroy the galaxy).

Helena said...

I definitely want to see Rogue One, and I love how a young woman is a pivotal character--and she's a fighter, not a princess (although I've always loved Princess Leia's snark). An old-fashioned movie I caught was Allied, and I loved it.

Liz, look forward to hearing about it.

Sherry, if they come to your town, you can audition to be part of the local orchestra that plays with them.

Al, I know what you are seeing!

JH, I'm a bigger Star Trek fan than Star Wars fan.

Stephen, cool you'll see it in IMAX.

Robert, you will appreciate the lack of Jedis in the film.

I got to see TSO in concert once with my mom. Wonderful production. And I got to see Rogue One with my husband last Friday. ME! Actually watching a movie in the theater! I thought Jyn's speeches were cheesy, but otherwise had lots of fun watching. K-2SO was awesome and I loved the one-liners with Chirrut too. "Come on! I'm blind!" All in all, a fun watch, even though my husband didn't like the CG faces.

Been on the fence about seeing Rogue One so haven't seen it yet. Might wait until it comes out on DVD. I'm holding out until 2017 to go to the movies. Merry Christmas!
We just saw Rogue One last night, and although I enjoyed it, I wasn't quite as impressed - partly because 4 of our movie party of 16 didn't understand where the movie fit in the timeline, which is partly my fault for not having that conversation before the movie. You can imagine that if these 4 didn't get the premise and timing of the movie within the whole Star Wars saga, the other awesome tie-ins were completely lost on them. Then, as a whole, we had some issues with the CGI characters - especially the last one. So, while I loved it as a Star Wars nerd, and my husband and I discussed everything from costume choices to plot pacing and Easter eggs, not everyone with us was happy with the movie. We did all love Alan Tudyk's character. :)

I agree about Rogue One. I think it is the best of the franchise. I was pleasantly surprised because I did not like seven. I know the arguments about reintroducing the story to a new generation, but I hated that it was beat-for-beat the same as four. Therefore, I only went to RO because it was a chance to hang out with my son. I was prepared to be disappointed, and instead was very pleasantly surprised.

Merry Christmas!

I'm waiting to see Rogue One after Christmas break when things slow down a little. Moana's next.

Charles, then go!

Loni, I thought they did pretty well with the CGI faces. Glad you got out to the theater.

Mark, it was that awesome.

Tyrean, Leia didn't look as real. I didn't think it's placement in the timeline was that difficult to figure out though.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

As a Star Wars addict, I've been looking forward to Rogue One for eons...well months. However, my disability makes a visit to the movies very difficult, so it's the long wait for the Blue-Ray. Although unwell at the moment, will escape to the Star Wars when I can continue playing Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Happy Christmas and Festive Greeting to you, Alex, and everyone else.

Great post! I hope to see Star Wars soon. TSO is awesome. I haven't seen the Netflix show yet, but I'll have to check it out.

My plans to see Rogue One with friends were postponed due to a winter storm, I hope we'll get to see it soon. I would love to see TSO in concert someday.

Merry Christmas, Alex!

Well, I'm very late but thanks for the reviews (especially on Rogue One, I've been off all things Star Wars since they killed Han Solo). Merry Christmas, Alex.

Merry Christmas Alex and best wishes for 2017! I would love to see that new movie, Rogue One. . .I'm a Star Wars and Star Trek fan. It's scifi, what's not to love? Sorry I've been visiting blogs infrequently, but life has been too full lately. (full of things that have to be done, sigh)
But a new year is coming, one I hope will improve on the sad events of 2016. Enjoy the holidays!

I finally saw a movie before your review was published. Not that I wanted to. I prefer your impressions first. Spectral was a good film. Fascinating concept. The setting was quite credible. Feliz Navidad, Alex. Best to you and your family at this wonderful time of year.

Merry Christmas! And I'm jealous of both your viewing of Rogue One and TSO. I'm going to get to one of their shows one of these years if it kills me.

I read this post almost two weeks ago, but never got around to coommenting, today I'm catching up on blog posts and comments and what a shame because...

I wanted to comment and say that although I'm not a total Star Wars (or Space Opera) geek I really loved Rogue One. It's what the last one should have been, but sadly was not IMO. There was action and plot from the opening, personable and likeable characters, honor, loyalty and all that jazz. The ending, oh the ending, it was a little sad but a had to be that way and completely super.

Now it's a nshame to leave this comment on the day that we hear Princess Leia AKA Carrie Fisher has passed. May the Force be with her.

I just saw TSO for new year's yesterday! Pretty damn incredible show, I have to say. I wasn't all that thrilled with the first part, though a lot of that was that it's hard to sell me on a Christmas show at any time, especially on New Year's Eve, but the second part was amazing. The friend I went with likes to see them every time they come through, so I'll definitely go again.

And Rogue One was very good, definitely a different tone and I like that we get to see how everyone who's not a Jedi has to deal with things. :P

Happy New Year!

I'm back from my own blogging break. My family and I have seen Rogue One three times so far, and my son is making his own Lego model of Scarif.

I liked Tara's distinction between beasts and monsters. Congrats on the new book!

Sadly, I've never seen TSO in concert, but I really, REALLY want to. I don't know why. Cuz I'm a doofas, I guess. ;D Glad you loved Rogue One, though. I did too. Saw it just a few days ago and can't wait to go see it again. Love, love, LOVED it! ;D Hope you had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Alex! Xoxo!

Saw Rogue One on Christmas. In addition to a whole lot of "take your breath away" superlatives, wasn't that the most bad-ass Darth Vader scene ever filmed?

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Roland, sorry to hear that.

LD, you'll like the change of pace in Rogue One.

DG, have to support all things science fiction.

Tara, always happy to have you.

Lynda, you have to go!

Faraway, that was such sad news. And the movie couldn't have ended any other way.

Mason! Glad you got to see them. Think that was the last day of their show. And their first three CDs are all Christmas, so it has to be a Christmas show.

Happy New Year everyone!

Rogue One was good. And that droid was a hoot.

I didn't know that was Wash!!! No wonder he was my favorite. And I agree - Rogue One is fantastic, possibly the best of the lot. Such a nice surprise to see they put that much effort and care into one of the side movies. We're in for lots of Star Wars fun in the coming years, methinks.
