April Movie Preview, What Are the Kargrandes, The Machine Movie Review, New Releases, and My World During the A to Z Challenge

I am visiting the delightful Stephanie Faris today with a humorous and snarky piece on giving from the heart.

I’m also at the Insecure Writer’s Support Group, outlining what is to come in April.

And I updated my blogroll! It is now alphabetized and in smaller sections. If you're a regular here and don't find your blog listed, please let me know.

What Are the Kargrandes?

New clue today at What Are the Kargrandes? This is clue number twelve – only one more to go! New clues every Monday until the release of Dragon of the Stars on April 7.

Sample Tweets for this week:

What are the Kargrandes? What are their powers? Are they sentient? http://whatarethekargrandes.com/ #whatarethekargrandes @alexjcavanaugh

What are the Kargrandes? Can you solve the mystery by April 7? http://whatarethekargrandes.com/ #whatarethekargrandes @alexjcavanaugh

If you haven’t signed up for the Thunderclap campaign, please do. If you are on either Twitter, Facebook, or Tumblr and want to help me spread the word of the release of Dragon of the Stars on April 7, click HERE.

And to celebrate my upcoming release, my publisher will be dropping the price of my third book, CassaStorm, to .99 on Wednesday! So if you haven’t picked it up, later this week will be your chance.

Movie Review

The Machine
Set in the near future, scientist Vincent McCarthy creates a self-aware artificial intelligence modeled after his late assistant. Britain’s Military of Defense wants to use Ava as a weapon though.
This is another quiet, slower-paced film. It explores a lot of issues surrounding life and death. When the military starts training Ava and it bothers her, it raises a lot of questions about what is right and what is wrong, as does the presence of soldiers from earlier experiments who have undergone unique transformations.
The other half of McCarthy’s mental and emotional struggle is his dying daughter. He has been working with the military on AI in hopes of finding a cure for her.
The special effects are good and the movie is well done. It’s one of those smaller films that’s good but not enough to really stick with you. This movie came out in 2013 and ironically there is another film coming out in April that is very similar.
Worth a watch if you’re in the mood.

April Movie Preview

Here are the upcoming theatrical releases for April! As always, descriptions courtesy of the IMDB. Snarky comments by me.

3 –

Furious 7
Deckard Shaw seeks revenge against Dominic Toretto and his family for the death of his brother.
Director: James Wan
Stars: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham
Early reviews say it’s a fitting tribute to Paul Walker…

10 –

Ex Machina
A programmer wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company's brilliant and reclusive CEO. Upon his arrival, he learns he’s been chosen to be the human component in a Turing Test-charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of the latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava, a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated--and more deceptive--than the two men could have imagined.
Director - Alex Garland
Starring – Alicia Vikander, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson
Artificial intelligence? Abd she’s named Ava? Now, why does that sound familiar…?

17-

Self/less
An extremely wealthy man, dying from cancer, undergoes a radical medical procedure that transfers his consciousness into the body of a healthy young man. But all is not as it seems when he starts to uncover the mystery of the body's origin and the organization that will kill to protect its cause.
Director: Tarsem Singh
Stars: Matthew Goode, Ryan Reynolds, Natalie Martinez, Michelle Dockery
Considering the director’s track record of doing beautiful looking films that are vapid, they might want to re-title this one Plot/less…

My World During the Challenge

The A to Z Challenge kicks off in just two days! There is still time to join us for the biggest blogging event of the year.

My theme is Cult Classics and I have all the posts formatted and images ready to go. I also have my posts scheduled at the A to Z Blog and the Insecure Writer’s Support Group site.

However, this year will be a little more insane as I have a book release and tour going on at the same time.

I’m still going to aim for my usual blog visits during the Challenge, which is one hundred and fifty a day, spread between blogger buddies, Challenge participants, and commenters. I’ll also have tour stops that are a top priority. I’ve already taken two days off from work to handle the load. (April 1, since it’s both day one of the Challenge and IWSG post day and April 7, since that’s Dragon’s release day.) But there are two other days during the month when commitments elsewhere will prevent me from visiting as many, at least right away.

My promise to everyone is that I will do my best. I may not get to every single post you toss out there, but I will try to get to as many as possible. Know that if you leave a comment, I WILL visit no matter what.

Remember, in addition to cult classic movies, albums, science fiction books, and a term from Dragon of the Stars, I will be featuring one to four blogger buddies every single day!

Plus there will be a giveaway and a scavenger hunt on April 7 to celebrate the realse of Dragon. And some awesome tour stops, all unique and really, really short!

I might even have a blogfest to announce….

Still puzzled by Kargrandes? Picking up some new books? Seen The Machine? Any April movie catch your eye? Is your April going to be just as crazy? Have a plan for coping?

Don’t forget to visit Stephanie Faris and the Insecure Writer’s Support Group!

Hi Alex - you always do an amazing job - keeping up with all things, helping us and generally visiting .. 150 -that's a lot .. but connection is the key. I have no idea about the Kargrandes ... and yes I plan to visit many during the A-Z - old friends and new ones .. and I'm doing something else - all in all .. I will cope by having that balance ..

Cheers and thanks so much for all you do - see you at Stephs .. Hilary

My Alex you are going to be busy.
Where would Blogging be without you?
I still can't fathom out about the Kargrandes, perhaps the final clue will clinch it for me.

Good luck with your book tour and sales....sure to be a success.

See you on the A to Z, imagine Alex this is number 6, who'd have thought it would have lasted this long. With my A to Z challenge T shirt on I'll say bye for now.

Cindy said...

So many cool covers! It sure does sound like you're going to be swamped. I'm ready for A to Z up to the letter M so far.

(I don't see my blog on the sidebar.)

Liza said...

Hi Alex. This morning, Amazon sent me an email telling me your new book is releasing April 7! I was aware, but it was fun to get that email Whoo hoo! Congratulations and best wishes.

Natalie Aguirre said...

Wow! That's going to be intense getting to 150 blogs a day. I can't believe you've got your blog tour too. But if anyone can handle it, you can. You're so amazing at getting to everything.

Truedessa said...

Good Morning, It sounds like you will have a tight schedule starting in a couple of days. I have put some of the clues together and have a thought or two. I wrote them down and once the book comes out I will check to see how close I actually was. I had a dream about your book last night, well let's just say it was dragon related and it makes me wonder????

Have a great day and week. I'll see you around the blogsphere.

Alex you are awesome

Your best is always good enough! Relax and try to enjoy the latest book release! Can't wait :)

How are you keeping in all together... I am starting to freak on the A to Z Challenge. You are going to be everywhere and then the book... yikes. F7 is going to be a interesting film, it's sad the situation. I cannot wait for the AVENGERS II, been watching all the films over and over again. This includes things like Punisher, Daredevil and Ghostrider...

HAVE A GREAT DAY, BE SAFE AND WELL....

Jeremy

The term "Ava" is coming up all over the place!

Good luck on your upcoming book release! Sounds like it's a good idea to take some time off work to manage the A-Z and book release.

Christine Rains said...

You are a busy guy and it's going to get busier. Good luck in April. Congratulations to all the authors releasing new books! I haven't heard of The Machine but I've seen commercials for the other one. Have a good week!

It's a busy month for all of us, but yours is going to full on. My theme is already turning into far more work than I thought it would be.

Donna K. Weaver said...

Seriously? They couldn't even come up with a different name? We've seen all the Furious films, so I'm sure we'll get this one too.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Hilary, it's a lot, but I'll manage somehow.

Yvonne, we've been there since the beginning!

Cindy, I will add it!

Liza, that's cool!!!

Truedessa, really? Whoa...

Lisa, you are awesome!

Jeremy, no freaking yet!

Rhonda, hope you can pull it off.

Jo said...

I complain visiting 5 blogs a day is too much and you do 150. Thank goodness for clones. I really don't know how you achieve all you do.

I am looking forward to the release of Dragon - it should be fun doing the Scavenger hunt.

Annalisa Crawford said...

So I guess you were just sitting there with your feet up, thinking how you had nothing to do, so alphabetised your list ;-)

I'm not surprised you need some days off to get everything sorted - hope the book release goes well :-)

Stephanie Faris said...

So honored to have you today--and you're already inspiring people who have read it!

I can't imagine managing a book launch and A to Z in the same month. So far that hasn't happened...but I'm sure it will someday! I just had an author who isn't part of all this ask me to host her on my blog and I told her she couldn't in April--it would have to be May. I know she was thinking, "What the HECK?"

A Beer for the Shower said...

Humor? Snark? I do believe that doth speak my language sir, and it was well said. Even if we are snarky jerks on our blog, we DO try to give with the right heart when we can. Write from it, too.

Also, just a little fun quote from the hack R. L. Stine:
I hate it when people tell kids, 'Write what you know. Write from your heart.' That's terrifying; I've never written a word from my heart, never. I've been writing for 30 years, and I've never written a single word from my heart.'

Kids... don't listen to this man. He's the author equivalent of cat hair. His books are everywhere, they suck, and no matter how much we try to ignore them, they just won't go away.

Mason Canyon said...

Congrats to those with book releases, including your upcoming book Alex. You have a lot on your plate this coming month, but I'm sure you'll be able to handle it with grace and fun. Now I'm off to visit with you at Stephanie's.

Only one week to go until everyone can read DRAGON OF THE STARS.

I picked up two books by Italian authors.

The Ministry of Thunder (digital, December 2014) [ Kindle Edition ASIN: B00R1XANYW; Acheron Books] by Davide Mana.
" an explosive mix of Oriental Fantasy and New Pulp."

Lieutenant Arham: Elves and Bullets (digital, December 2014) [ Kindle Edition ASIN: B00R1XANYW; Acheron Books] by Alessio Lanterna.
"A techno fantasy noir set in a dark, dirty, corrupted world, and the most unpleasant leading character you can imagine."

I'm kind of drawn to Furious 7, but then, I'd probably have to watch 4, 5 and 6 too. (Just the sort of person I am.)

I'm breathless from reading about your April, Alex! You must be one super organized dude! I love what you've done with the "What are the Kargrandes?" I'm trying to decide what ocean creature on land they might be. I'm leaning toward intelligent forms like an octopus, a dolphin, or a whale (which started out as a land creature, btw, and its skeleton still has vestigial legs). I'm rooting for you!

See you Wednesday for A!

I'm always amazed at how much you manage to get done in such an inch of time and space every day. I'm just glad I finished my WIP before April, and decided to use Camp NaNo to revise and edit a much-shorter project instead of diving right into another supersized book!

That's kind of cool that you alphabetized your blog roll. I'll hop over and check out your interview at Stephanie's blog.

Cult movies sounds fun. Hope to see some of my favorites on there, with or without robot commentary!

Excited for Fast 7, especially to see how they handled things with the tragic death of Paul Walker mid-shoot. Sounds like your world will be crazy in April. Mine is similar, though I don't think I'm as ambitious as you in terms of how many I'll visit per day. I do like the idea of featuring other bloggers. Maybe I'll feature a few I liked the day before on each blog. Great idea! See you tomorrow!

Good progress A-Z Alex, tomorrow we start !!!

I read moviemakers used CGI to fill in the "Gaps" for Paul Walkers scenes in Furious 7.

April's going to be real crazy, Its my 5th year blogging in the A to Z challenge and I've also committed to Armchair Squid's Star Trek The Animated Series Blogfest!

Its epic fun all round with two posts every Wednesday!

Back when I had blog rolls, I parted mine out as well. Much easier.

Happy April :-)

I keep wondering how tomorrow is April already!

And maybe Ava is just a really popular name for AIs. ;)

I'm like Cherie, I can't believe tomorrow is April already. I only have three posts done but that's okay, I think it will be good for me to wing it this year.
Hard to believe April 7 is right around the corner too! Excited for you. :)

Hoping you've got your No-Doze on standby for the coming A-to-Z. Maybe things will be where I can participate again next year. We'll see. Have FUN!

Great post on Stephanie's blog! I am wishing you the best of luck with your book tour and the A-Z Challenge. You will be one busy guy. I hope you figured out a way to clone yourself- as that would be the most helpful way to get everything done. :) I know it will be an awesome month for you! Good luck!

Good luck on the book tour, and I'm looking forward to your A-Z posts. I'm a fan of cult classics as well.
