Secrets of Honor, The Making of the IWSG Anthology, IWSG Videos, Ninja News, and Destination Star Trek 3

We're starting with a bang today and an awesome author, Carol Kilgore!

Hi! My name is Carol Kilgore, and I write Crime Fiction with a Kiss. Thank you, Alex, for hosting me today.

Once upon a time, there was a jewel thief . . .

So begins the tale of Kat Marengo and Dave Krizak. The story could go all kinds of ways. The jewel thief could be
• an especially mischievous fairy who delights in swapping one jewel for another.
• a zombie who believes emeralds are brains.
• an octopus-like creature from Neptune who adorns his tentacles with NASA probes.
• a mermaid who uses sunken treasure to purchase aquarium space for herself at SeaWorld.

But in my new novel, SECRETS OF HONOR, my jewel thief is a government agent doing her job.

SECRETS OF HONOR
By the end of a long evening working as a special set of eyes for the presidential security detail, all Kat Marengo wants is to kick off her shoes and stash two not-really-stolen rings in a secure spot. Plus, maybe sleep with Dave Krizak. No, make that definitely sleep with Dave Krizak. The next morning, she wishes her new top priorities were so simple. They have 24 hours to locate a kidnapped girl, or they will have to fight for the life of the first lady.

IWSG Anthology!

HUGE thanks to everyone who posted or sent their submission for the anthology, The Insecure Writer’s Support Group’s Guide to Publishing and Beyond. We had over a hundred submissions and they were amazing. Quite a few were emailed to us, so there will be a lot of fresh, new content in the book.

One thing I learned was never say no to an anthology. I turned down submitting a piece to The Tree of Life because I was busy at the time. (Yeah – stupid!) Fortunately, Samantha asked me to contribute to Heroes of Phenomena, and I didn’t say no a second time.

I never realized how much effort was involved in an anthology until now. Let me give you a backstage view of what the IWSG Admins have been doing:

Me – Gathering all email submissions and all IWSG posts (which meant reading every single one.) Gathering and requesting bios, permission, and websites, then logging all entries on a spreadsheet and sending out to be proofed. (By Friday my brain was mush - my apologies to all the bloggers I didn't visit toward the end of last week.)

Joylene, Susan, Michelle, and Joy – Human Spell Check machines and proofers. (Wow, did they read a lot of words! And poor Michelle had the flu last week.)

Lynda – Final proofing and organizing submissions for the book, noting issues and quotes and other stuff. (She did a LOT of reading!)

Diane – Format the entire mess into a book. (Good luck!)

So, as you can see, a lot of work went into this book. But we couldn’t have done it without all of you!

And I want to point out one very special submission. It was on making book trailers, and unfortunately the videos won’t make it into the book. But you have to see what HJ Blenkinsop created for us! This is just one of three:

The Insecure Writer’s Support Group #3

Think Carol’s story is better without the octopus creature from Neptune? Picking up some new books? Follow along with Destination Star Trek 3’s events? Enjoy this past week’s IWSG or contribute to the anthology? Wonder what a Ninja’s brain looks like when it turns to mush…?

Wednesday will be some light fun, trivia, and maybe even a bit about the Ninja…

And if you can co-host the IWSG in November or December, please leave a comment!

Cool trailer. And yes, it sounds like lots of work putting the anthology together. Glad you have so many people helping you.

An octopus creature from Neptune...sounds like the next great SyFy Saturday night movie.

I sadly missed last week's IWSG, which I think means I've been cut from the list yet again. I am such a terrible blogger. I'll pick it back up in January.

Formatting has to be rough

Brian Miller said...

ha. i like the premise of secrets of honor...a bit more realistic than the octopus...its cool to see the Next Gen crew again....there was a cool moment on NCIS the other day between the enterprise and DS9 captains....

Rhonda Albom said...

Carol's book sounds interesting, although the mermaid would have been nice. But what I really looking forward to is the anthology. I wish I was a bit less insecure in my writing, so I could have taken your advice to always contribute. Big thanks to all your team.

Congrats to Carol and everyone with book releases!! I've had a mushy brain from reading and editing, totally understand...

Jemi Fraser said...

Looking forward to the anthology - life has kind of been swallowing me whole lately so I didn't get a piece submitted. It's going to be awesome though!

Congrats to Carol! I would love to see that alien octopus! Can't wait to read the anthology. You guys are an awesome team. :)

Tonja Drecker said...

Congrats, Carol! The real book sounds tons better than the other 3 possibilities. Wow. I missed that there's another StarTrek generation coming...time to get out of my cave, I guess. And if you'll have me, I'd love helping out with IWSG in December.

That is a lot of work that the admins are doing! Looking forward to the end result.

Excited for Carol!

Jay Noel said...

Oh boy. I can't imagine formatting it all. Yowza! And with Carol's book, I'm going with Mermaids. They look so innocent, sure, but they could steal stuff right from under you.

Love the trailer. I've thoughts of using Animoto, but you have to use their music, I thought.

Tyrean Martinson said...

Wow! That's a lot of work to do in one week! Way to go!

Wow, that is a lot of work to do so quickly. You people are awesome. I hope Michelle is feeling better. And Carol's story sounds pretty awesome without the octopus.

Looking forward to Wednesday. Hope to hear a bit more about the Ninja!!

I kind of want to know if the mermaid made it to Seaworld? Was she a snack for Keannu the Killer Whale? . Congrats on the book! Wow Alex...you rock and now comes the day for the book and having to get it all organized-no small feat!

Carol Kilgore said...

Hi Alex! Thanks again for hosting me here today. I'll do my best to keep up :)

Lynda and kaykuala - Thanks. Lots of great new books here, plus the anthology!

M.J. - The octopus's name is Otto. He never knows if he's going or coming :)

Brian - Glad you like the premise!

Rhonda - The mermaid wasn't much of a team player. She wanted everything for herself :)

Cathrina - Mushy brain here, too :)

Christine - Otto the Octopus has Earth on his bucket list :)

Marcy - Thank you!

Hi to all! I'll be back here a little later this morning.

Very cool to see Carol and her new awesome book over here. Also, what a trailer. When I start work on mine for my upcoming solo novel, I only hope it's even half that good (and professional).

cleemckenzie said...

Lots of behind the scenes work on anthologies. I really do appreciate what it takes to put all of that together in a cohesive piece. Congrats to the team.

As to Carol's book, I'll take anything but a zombie. Thank you.

What a great animoto bit for IWSG!

Michelle Wallace said...

I'm feeling much better now, Alex. But it was an awkward time to be ill...talk about bad timing...LOL
I hope your "mushy" brain has been restored to some semblance of normality (whatever your 'normality' consists of?)

I love Carol's "crime fiction with a kiss"!
...and you're so right - NEVER say no to an anthology. I'm honored to be a part of the Tree Of Life collaboration. It was an exhilirating experience!

Michael Offutt, Phantom Reader said...

A great success all around on the anthology, Alex. It probably makes you very proud to see your baby come so far. Also, is that Tasha Yar on stage? She's in the Walking Dead too. Nice to see she's popping up again after what seemed like a career hiatus.

Carol is always entertaining :)

A lot of work goes into an anthology. Just our small Untethered Realms group took a year to get ours out. Editing twice, proofreading, formatting--after the stories are submitted. Very rewarding, though! Can't wait to get my copy of IWSG anthology. Thanks for all the work you all put into it.

Congrats to everyone with new releases!

Angela Brown said...

I'd have to say I'm certain Carol's book is better without the octopus. The blurb is very intruging as is.

I've gotten a chance to snatch up a few things, including Gwen Gardner's Ghostly Gallows, with my One-click at Amazon. Me, that button and my wallet are going to end up needing counseling lol!!

And many thanks to all the peeps working to bring IWSG's anthology together. Big Hugs to you all!!
