CD Coffelt and Selfish Writers, Gravity Review, the IWSG and Why I’m Not on Facebook, and the Ninja News

Today I welcome Wilder Mage author, CD Coffelt from Spirit Called!

Writers are Selfish Cusses - Huntress

Have you ever noticed how self-centered we are? The writers in this forum and all other writerly venues?

Yes. Even Alex. *gasp of horror*

What evidence do I have? Why do I commit this blasphemy? Here is the proof:

Writers, bloggers, agents, editors, and published authors all help the people just starting out. They give their time, experience, and expertise. They show them how to format their manuscript, write a query, and create scenes and hooks. They improve a newbies’ grammar, style, and critique their work. They promote book covers and new releases.

Why?

“Light bulb.” – Gru, Despicable Me

It’s because we’re greedy. All of us. From me up the line. Insatiable. From Alex to Stephen King, Jim Butcher, and nearly every author who has made it to the top.

We help the up-and-comer, the ones just starting out, give them hope, and encourage the ones just rejected. We aid them in all their endeavors for One Reason Only.

Because we love to read.

Molding the new writer into Published Author is the best way we know how to create new reading material.

We just want more good books to read.

Looking out for our own self-interests, that’s all.

*tongue firmly in cheek*

Wilder Mage, by Huntress aka CD Coffelt, an Amazon Best Seller

The earthquake wasn’t his fault. Not this time.

Movie Review

Gravity
Staring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as two astronauts trying to survive after an accident leaves them stranded in space.
Ninety minutes is the perfect run time for this tense film. Nothing could be scarier than stranded in space and pelted by debris.
The visuals are beyond incredible. (Oscar winner for sure.) Never has a film captured the essence of space so well. There is also something fascinatingly beautiful about watching a space station being shattered. The sound is also minimal, exactly what you’d expect in space.
Bullock is excellent as the medical engineer turned astronaut, and her reactions are what you’d expect during someone’s first trip into space. She has moments of panic, denial, and despair, fighting oxygen deprivation while clinging to her training.
The character building is minimal and the film occasionally feels a little cold. But you are invested in Bullock’s character and on the edge of your seat as she fights to survive.
For those of you who suffer motion sickness, there is one spinning scene you won’t want to watch!
A must-see in 3D and in the theater.
Highly recommend.

IWSG’s Future and Why I’m Not on Facebook

The Insecure Writer’s Support Group website continues to grow, as does the Facebook Group. That has led to several people asking if I will be joining Facebook.

My answer – no.

I have my own personal reasons why I’ve never joined. I’ve heard enough complaints about Facebook’s privacy issues and time suck capabilities that I’ve avoided it. I was also warned to limit my social sites to two-three maximum. I’ve chosen blogging, Twitter, and Google+. (Plus there is Goodreads.) It is all I can do to maintain those, especially now that we’ve launched the IWSG site. There simply isn’t time for me to do more – I barely have time to practice my guitar, let alone write.

Truth is, the Facebook page is running just fine without me! Several of the admins have taken the group and run with it, planning a schedule, approving members, and answering questions.

I want both sites to be self-sufficient and continue to grow and expand beyond me. The IWSG is really important to me and I want it to benefit writers long after I am gone. (And nobody panic – the Ninja is not leaving anytime soon!)

Today my post at the Insecure Writer’s Support Group website talks about the importance of the group and the site and where it is headed. I also ask the question – what does the IWSG mean to you?

Are writers selfish cusses? Did you follow Pat during the Challenge? Think Stephen’s cover rocks? Did you see Gravity? And is it all right if the Ninja avoids Facebook?

Visit the Insecure Writer’s Support Group website and let me know what the group means to you…

Awesome that you liked Gravity. This is one I definitely want to see.

And that's good you limit the social networking to what you can handle. I'm not on Twitter or Facebook as much as I'd like because I spend so much time on blogs.

Good Monday to you Alex.....from Spain.
Some very good books there and reviews. I have been over to the A to Z Blogging, excellent interview. Look forward to the Website for the I.W.S.G. As for Face book used to be a member perhaps , just perhaps I may rejoin.
Yvonne.

My boyfriend worked on Gravity as an illustrator. I guess I knew about the film before anyone else did :-)

Kittie Howard said...

Congrats to all! Awesome books! And I so want to see "Gravity" when the crowds thin-- finally, my kinda movie. As for FB, couldn't agree more.

Sheila Siler said...

I love your support of new writers Alex. I think you are wise to limit your social media (I tried Google+ but just can't seem to get into it). I'll go check out the I.W.S.G. site and Facebook group now. Have a great day!

ediFanoB said...

Thank you for the Gravity review.
Now I know that the trailers did not promise too much.

A J Walker’s The Maze of Mist sounds interesting. I checked Amazon for book details.

Maybe it is of interest that this is the second book in the Chronicles of the House of Itxaron series.
The first book ist titled Roots Run Deep.
Both books are set in the same world and are standalone novels.

Jessica Bell said...

Congrats to all those with new releases! Heading over to your new blog now ... :-)

You're right...I do just want more good books to read.

And I've heard that Gravity is a must-see in 3-D, which makes me sad because I cannot see a movie in 3-D. Glad you enjoyed it!

S.A. Larsenッ said...

You do speak the truth, Ninja Captain. And it's funny, too. The older I get the more I cherish reading. Using it as an escape or 'break' from the real of everything has become therapy. :)

J.L. Campbell said...

Hi, Alex,
Hope this is the start of a good week for you. I like the concept of Wilder Mage. Someone who can cause earthquakes? More than inneresting. :) And more good books out as well!

Totally understand your resistance. I know from personal experience that Facebook is a huge timesuck. I've tried to limit myself to that and Twitter and a little bit of Google+. Even then, I don't manage them well.

As to the IWSG, I've learned that we all have our own struggles, even when we look like we have everything together.

Thanks for following through with your vision. Well done!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Natalie, same here!

Yvonne, enjoy your trip, and no pressure to rejoin Facebook.

Vanessa, that is really cool!

Sheila, I can only do so much...

Edi, there is a lot more than what's in the trailers. And yes, the book is a sequel. I should've mentioned that...

MJ, I'm sorry.

Joy, glad you understand, and we'll just keep the illusion of everything together going.

TerryLynnJohnson said...

I'm going to see Gravity tonight!

Eye of the Soul has a fantastic cover! Looks great! Congrats Terri!

I agree about FB. I'm on there, but I do hardly ever use it.

Rhonda Albom said...

I have to admit, I was quite surprised to see you had a facebook group. It makes sense that you are not there - probably none of us should really be on FB with all the issues, but I am too deeply engrained to turn back now.

Elizabeth Spann Craig said...

I think you're smart to limit yourself to a couple of different sites. Too easy to get spread thin, otherwise. Plus...I just hate FB. I'm on it...but it's definitely not my thing.

Gravity doesn't seem like Bullock's usual type of film...interesting. I'll have to check it out.

Optimistic Existentialist said...

I saw Gravity on Saturday afternoon and was just mesmerized! Wow. Simply amazing.

Sandra Ulbrich Almazan said...

Sometimes readers get so desperate for new material they become writers themselves.

I downloaded the sample of Wilder Mage. Looking forward to reading it!

Humm, maybe my husband and I should go see Gravity. It's been a long time since we went to the movies.

Facebook is fun and does offer some good networking opportunities with groups, but it is a big time-suck. You have to find the social media balance that works for you.

Sean McLachlan said...

A.J. Walker is a guest blogger at my blog today, writing about using real cultures in fantasy fiction. He's incorporated little-known cultures such as Kurgan and Abyssinian into his work!

As for social media, I still haven't found the right balance. I focus on blogging and use Twitter and FB somewhat. I'm getting more and more into Goodreads.

Unknown said...

The gravity of the situation and your thoughts of Facebook are right as people connect to it everyday. I ask myself does it help me in a business sense the answer is yes. I connect to composers of film scores and find to get to be friends with these people who I hold like rock-stars. Here is your forum and your connections to the world, you don't need any more.. stay strong, stay true to you.

I have no real interest in the film Gravity, not because it's not good, I just am like okay... space.
I am never going to go there and though technically we are there all the time. I like the fantasy of a film anymore. It will be a wait for the dvd, then enter space.

Rusty Carl said...

I like to think I'm selfish in the more traditional sense. Great stuff all around. The growth of IWSG makes me think you just have the Midas touch.

Madeline Mora-Summonte said...

I'm not on Facebook either, but I did join the IWSG group and became an IWSG blog Follower. :)

And can't wait to see Gravity!

Karen Baldwin said...

LOve the new blog, and always appreciate your reviews. I was wondering if I should see Gravity...now I will for sure. thanks

L. Diane Wolfe said...

It's a good kind of selfish.

Avoid Facebook, Alex. After their change in policies I pulled a lot of my photos.

Unknown said...

All artists are selfish as one must be in order to create. God help our spouses.

I limit my time online as much as I can. I'll stay completely off all social media for 4 to 6 weeks at a stretch when I have to. We've got to have our priorities set, or we'll let the internet and its denizens consume us.

Unknown said...

I'm waiting for Gravity on the "Small" screen. The little I saw in the trailer at the theater make me woozy.

Chris Desson said...

Oh my gosh. I cringed when I first started reading The Huntress's post but it's funny and true. I don't think we do it just for something to read, but also for someone to lean on when we need it because non-writing spouses don't understand what a writer goes through and feels.

Facebook- I plan to stay away from it as long as I can.

Livia Peterson said...

I can't wait to see Gravity on October 13! I have ridiculously high expectations, and I hope it fulfills them. I know it will definitely live up to its hype - it's inevitable. I plan on seeing it in 3D, but I am so worried that it WILL NOT be effective - like most films.

It is okay that you're not on Facebook, Alex. It just we want YOU to see all the awesome things that are happening. I mean if it wasn't for you, we would've never been able to share are writerly insecurities and met our friends.

Unknown said...

Writers are both selfish and generous. I am on facebook mostly so that I can keep in touch with my family and friends that live so far away. As a writers platform I don't think it is as important. Can't wait to see Gravity!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Terry, you will enjoy it!

Rhonda, we'll throw you a rope and pull you out!

Elizabeth, it was odd to see her with short hair.

Sandra, that's why I started writing. And since you like the science stuff, you really need to go see Gravity.

Sean, I will visit!

Jeremy, well said - this is my connection.

Rusty, that would be nice!

Anne, exactly.

David, it will make your head spin on the big screen.

Christine, good for you!

But if you don't sign up for Facebook, then who am I going to bombard with Candy Crush and Farmville requests? Who's going to listen to my uninformed political tirades and recycled memes?

God, NOW who's the selfish one...?

Luanne G. Smith said...

Yep, we're completely selfish for wanting to read more good books. :))

And there is no way I'm going to see Gravity. It's on par with JAWS for the scare factor for me.

Ciara said...

We've been curious about the Gravity. I saw her on an interview and she stated there was more to it than just the action. I might actually go to the theater to watch it. I KNOW I'll be going to see Ender's Game. One of my favorite books gone movie is a must see for me. :)

LD Masterson said...

I saw Gravity yesterday and agree totally - it must be seen in 3D and one the big screen. The big destruction scenes are great but I loved the one where Sandra Bullock shed a tear and it drifted out and just hung there in space.

Juliana Haygert said...

I've been hearing great things about Gravity - and that it's scary! lol

Pat Hatt said...

Selfish as can be at my sea haha but oh well, I can dwell in such hell. HATE stupid facebook too. Blog and twitter is enough for me.

Brian Miller said...

ha....serving our own self interest...yes i think we do...and the last thing we need is another bum book out there...i get satisfaction as well just in helping....

Jo said...

No-one, not even you and your clones, can do everything. I am staggered by what you achieve anyway.

Lots more good books out. Yes we are all selfish cusses because we want good books to read, even me who isn't an author.

I would like to see that movie.

Cathy Olliffe-Webster said...

I understand your feelings about Facebook but I miss you not being there. To me FB is one-third keeping up with faraway friends and family, one-third pure fun (I love zipping off 'mini-blog-posts' that, hopefully, make people laugh), and one-third a writer's platform. For the latter, I do find it more useful than Twitter. In fact, after my Twitter account was hacked last year I just closed it and haven't thought about it since.

You can't do everything, that's for sure. You do blogging so very, very well (you're a poster child for it actually). Thank goodness!

Rachel Schieffelbein said...

Lol, I was wondering where he was going with that. But yeah, he may have a point. ;)
FB can definitely be a time suck, and you are certainly busy enough! :)

Karen Lange said...

I think we are all selfish in some way. I'd have to count myself among those who want good books to read, so I guess I'm guilty! Thanks for the updates and for hosting CD!

Stephen Tremp said...

Thanks Alex for the shout out! I greatly appreciate it!

Wifey and I saw Gravity in 3D. Awesome movie. We may go again to see it at the IMAX.

I love FB because I can be as stupid as I want to be. I only spend about fifteen minutes a day on it. Posting stupid stuff.

Livia, the 3D is extremely effective! And thank you.

Brandon and Bryan, me!!

LG, stranded in space or the ocean - both scary.

Ciara, a lot more than action.

LD, that was a powerful scene!

Pat, Amen.

Cathy, thanks - I'll just stick to blogging then.

Stephen, you're welcome, and in IMAX would be great.

Arlee Bird said...

I won't be seeing Gravity in 3D but I'm sure I'll see it eventually.

We are all selfish to some degree. I know this was tongue in cheek, but actually it's a great topic for a bigger more serious study. I'm sure more than one book has been written about it.

I am a super selfish writer/reader ;) Wanting to read more good books is absolutely one of the major reasons why I've opened my blog to reviewing indie titles. There are so many well written, high quality stories from indie writers today that it would be a shame for any reader to pass them up entirely for traditionally published books.

ilima said...

Didn't plan on watching Gravity anytime soon BUT I caved to all the hype and watched it on Saturday. Glad I did, it was a nice surprise of a movie.

Unknown said...

We are insatiable readers, aren't we? Hmm--maybe that IS our motivation to help other writers succeed. ;)

Thank you times three for making me a part of your blog today. If it wasn't for writers helping writers, none of us would be where we are.

Congrats to Milo, Tony, Ella, AJ, Robyn, and Wendy, Roland, Donna, and Stuart.
Congrats to Terri and a big shout out to Stephen.
Gravity wasn't even on my radar until last Friday. Sure is now!
Love the new FB page and fully support your stand. I don't need to go far to find a time suck in my life.

LOVE, love, LOVE Wilder Mage. CD's imagination and world building is wonderful.

And Alex, you are so wise to avoid Facebook. It does suck you in and it's hard to escape.

I dont blame you for not joining FB. You dont need it. You do just fine without it. And it is just another time-suck.
Oh man I cant wait to see Gravity!! I think I'll whisk the hubby away tomorrow while the kids are in school!
Really love the new IWSG website. It's such a great group of writers. No snobs like in some groups. Just genuinely nice helpful people.

Bevimus said...

What a fun description of the selfish nature of writers! Self-serving, indeed!

I'm intrigued by Gravity, mostly due to the description of the special effects and how they pass any other space film yet made. May have to see that one...

I think it's the right call to stay off of Facebook. i have a personal page there, mostly so I can see family and friend's pictures. That's about all I use it for, and I wouldn't want to have to maintain a page for myself as an author (if/when I ever become one).

Thanks for everything you do with IWSG!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Thanks, Karen!

Lee, probably.

Summer, I have indeed seen it.

Nickie, there are just as many good ones, that's for sure.

Carol, you are welcome! Hope you can handle the comments.

PK, thanks, and we don't allow snobs!

Thanks, everyone!

Thanks for the review on Gravity. Honestly, it looks far too vacant and terrifying for me. I'd rather watch zombies...

Off to the Support Group website! Cheers :)

It's alright if you avoid FB. I do too. (We picks and chooses our weapons, er, tools for writing.) I do think writers CAN be selfish about writing time. That's justified.

Would love to see Gravity. Reminds me of the song with the line, 'Can you hear me, Major Tom?'

Congrats to Robyn and those with releases!

Absolutely want to see Gravity -- it sounds awesome. Plus it's a science fiction movies that's getting big buzz from non-scifi fans, which means I might actually get my wife to come see it with me, lol!

Congratulations to Milo and all the other publish-ees!!!! I wish you all tremendous success.

And as a writer, I don't think I'm any more selfish than anyone else -- I just want what I want, when I want it, the same as everyone else... ;)

When I first saw the trailer of Gravity, it really piked my interest. It does seem like an interesting movie to say the least, sort of put me in the mindset of Cast Away (in a way that there aren't many actors in the movie.) The only time a scene in a movie makes it very hard for me to focus is when the camera shakes. I forgot what it's called...but I don't think I would have a problem with the scene you're referring to on Gravity, haha. I plan to see it soon!

For many people, having too many social media sites can be a hassle and a headache all together. Plus, Facebook can become quite addictive for some people, unfortunately. I see nothing wrong with you not wanting to join, because you already have sites that you are dedicated to using! :)

Ha, "writers are selfish!" I guess we are. I like to think that we're self-aware and aware of others. Hopefully we are also self-effacing! Hmmm all those words start with "self."

My hubby and I haven't been to the movies in years, but as soon as I started reading about "Gravity", I thought it might be something we'd enjoy seeing in a theater. Judging by the record number of people who went to see it over the weekend, evidently a lot of other people felt the same way. Thanks for your review... now I definitely want to go see it.

As far as Facebook goes, if you don't wanta join, there's no reason why you should. Sure, it has some positive uses, but nothing that can't be accomplished elsewhere. So go practice your guitar with a clear conscience.

Wanting to help fellow strugglers so as to read their work is certainly a WIN/WIN situation.

I may go see GRAVITY tomorrow as some films just must be seen in theaters to be enjoyed!

I would think that going to see GRAVITY in 3D would exacerbate the motion sickness thing...just a thought. The movie hasn't really been on my radar much until the last few days or so when I kept seeing a commercial on TV and hearing a lady who seemed to be headed for problems, for which I said to myself "Is that Sandra Bullock?" Yep, I didn't even know George Clooney was in GRAVITY either until reading your review and now that I know he is...the movie surely has my attention :)

Why is it that just because everybody else and their mom is on Facebook, they want you to be on there as well?! I say to each his own...although I'm probably bias since I don't use Facebook either, partly because of some of the reasons you listed for why you don't participate on that website.

Many of my colleagues, associates and friends have tried to convince me to get on there because it has benefited them and had become a valuable resources for building relationships with new business contacts, being among the first to know about new industry developments and being in a position to get help on projects that they are working on. In that sense, I understand the value of Facebook and how it can help artists but I still pass on it. No deal, IMHO!

I am not fond of Facebook and thus, say cheers to you and anyone else who does not use it!

I resist the site trends - no intention of doing Pinterest, for instance. For those that can invest the time and garner interest, kudos! But I'd rather write too.
Readers are greedy - but also needy. Good reads feed our brains. :)

I suppose "selfishness" depends on your definition. I do agree with Huntress, and by that measure, you Alex are the most selfish of all! :)

What an interesting guest blog. Thanks, Huntress.

I saw Gravity in IMAX 3D and will be seeing it again this week when I take my friend, James. I think IMAX 3D is the only way to experience this masterpiece.

I love Stephen's cover! I think it's way different than the other two. I look forward to reading it because he's such an exciting writer.

Suze said...

My husband and I are planning to watch Gravity tomorrow. Thanks for your review, Al.

Christine Rains said...

*LOL* Great guest post! I totally agree. I'm selfish in that I just want to read and read and read. Hehehe! Stephen's cover is awesome. And yeah, it's quite all right if you avoid FB. There are days when I consider cutting myself off from it. It's the social media site I least enjoy, but the best one for sharing pictures of my kid with friends and family. As a writer, my blog is my number one tool, and Twitter comes in second.

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

Love Stephen's cover and I limit my social media too. I to FB though instead of twitter.

Gosh, I'm #100. That feels like a good omen. Thanks for the review on Gravity. I will look for it on Netflex, too far from a theatre. I'm also wishing I wasn't on FB. In fact, I'm seriously thinking of erasing my author pages. My reasons don't matter, as much as my need to do something for my well-being. Kudos to you for all your selfish moments, Alex!

Never thought I'd have a FB, Twitter, Blog or anything else for that matter, but after signing a contract for my first book, it clearly stated these were sights I needed to obtain for promotion purposes. I'm now enjoying them, though, clearly time consuming. Congrats to all the author's with new book releases all their covers are awesome!

Mark said...

Lol, selfish, but it's a good kind of selfish if we all like it, right? Also, I forgot that you're not on FB even thoguh your FB group is doing quite well...awesome! BTW - I mentioned you on my blog today:)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Nicole, sounds like we could start an anti-Facebook group! Just keep saying no.

Michael, guilty as charged then.

Christine, I agree with that.

Cathrina, I was just told to focus on a social site and a website - blogging combines both.

Mark, I saw that - thanks!

I was on the fence about Gravity, but now I think I will have to watch it.

Laura Pauling said...

I think we're all selfish - can't help it. But at the same time we realize the greater joy is in helping others. Kind of a paradox.

I hadn't even heard of gravity, but I just started watching Breaking Bad - the science teacher who makes meth - and loving it so far. :)

Tina said...

Definitely planning on seeing Gravity, and it might actually be one that I break out the wallet and pay to see in a theater.
Yes, we're selfish. We like to read. Since when is that a crime ;-)
I understand your anti-fb reasons, yet me miss you around there. We have a hell of a lot of fun!

Selfish? Yeah, I guess we are. Although, I will never finish my TBR piles. :)

Glad you saw another good movie. Seems fair for all the money we have to spend on them. I'm hoping to collect my pennies for Thor2 in NOV.

Great line up of titles!

FB is a complete time suck. So is everything else I suppose.

Happy Monday!

I saw Gravity on Friday. I loved it. I know it was completely CGI'ed, but it reminded me of an old school science fiction movie. I guess because all the equipment in space looks like it was made in 1975.

Tonja said...

Thanks for the review of Gravity - I definitely am going to go see it.

I think nothing bad is going to happen if you never use Facebook. It will be fine. :)

farawayeyes said...

Writers as selfish. I can actually see the logic to that post.

Gravity - oh Yeah, I want to see this one in the theater. Hope I can get healthy enough to sit through it.

Facebook UGH! don't even get me started. I personally think you're doing the right thing. I had a FB account many years ago and all it got me with in trouble.

Hi Alex! There isn't a selfish bone in your body unless you really love those Hot Tamales and they are the last box on Earth-tee,hee!

Wow, so many great newsworthy discoveries today!

Stephen's cover rocks!

Congrats to Milo, AJ, Robyn, Tony, Wendy, Roland, Donna,Terri, Stuar and Stephen! :D I hope I didn't miss anyone?!
YOU could do a business only FB page-if you change your mind...a FB ship without our NinjaCaptain makes me a bit sad!
Thank you for mentioning me...you brightened my gray day! No really it was gray here ;D

Love your review of Gravity. I didn't realise you were going to write one when I wrote mine, hehehe.

Thanks for stopping by, Alex! I've missed you too. I'm anxious to read CassaStorm!! (I took I-80 to I-40 going west to Arizona. Coming back east, I took I-80 from Salt Lake, dropped down to I-70 from Omaha, avoiding the floods in Colorado; then hooked onto I-64 that brought me back to Virginia. It was some trip!! I did feel like "someone" was helping me along the way. And God bless YOU, and your family, too!)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Laura, isn't that a great show?

Tina, I know. Have twice the fun for me.

Sydney, yes it did. That added to the realism.

Faraway, good to know.

Ella, of course I mentioned you - that is very cool! Hope your day is less grey.

Lynda, we really are connected...

Ann, smart route to take. And so glad to have you back!!

Nicki Elson said...

Haha, clever, Huntress. We are selfish, indeed.

I'm dying to see Graaaavity, and I just hope it stays in IMAX until I get the time to see it. Thanks for your thoughts on it.

Yeah, you're not missing much by not being on Facebook. I've chosen that, Twitter & Blogger as my three, and they're fine. But I'm wondering if I should pay more attention to Google + -- since Google is going to take over the world & all.

And this reminds me...I've got a link to send you. ;)

Cathy Keaton said...

I got off Facebook, too and I don't even miss it. There are better social networking websites out there.

Sabrina A. Fish said...

I actually like Twitter better and commend you for managing not to get sucked into the Facebook wormhole! Stephen's cover looks awesome. And I most definitely AM a selfish writer. Give me more good books, people!!!

J E Oneil said...

Gravity really does look impressive, although seeing it in 3D really is expensive.

Good for you for staying off of Facebook. Like writers don't have enough distractions.

Unknown said...

Interesting guest post. I guess there's a little selfishness in everything we do, which is fine as long as we're not doing things at the expense of others. I've been hearing so many great things about Gravity...though I'm still skeptical of seeing another movie in 3D. I don't blame you for not wanting to be on FB. It's so easy to lose way too much time on there.

Danette said...

People in general are selfish so I think it's hard to be too critical of authors. There are things are my workplace that sometimes just make me shutter and it's a library. You wouldn't think it would drive a lot of selfishness but it does. But speaking of selfish authors: Hemingway was BRUTAL to other authors- his reviews were mean spirited to say the least.

I guess Neal deGrasse Tyson enjoyed the movie but was critical of the science in Gravity. He tweeted a few of his critiques of it. one was "Astronaut Clooney informs medical doctor Bullock what happens medically during oxygen deprivation." There were quite a few others- lol.

Helena said...

And I thought I was the only person/writer who wasn't on Facebook! Personally, I've heard too many complaints about privacy invasion and selling of personal info to advertisers. And like you, Alex, I just don't have the time.

Are writers selfish? Some very much so. But I've met a lot of wonderful, supportive ones on the Internet, and I love it when they succeed 'cause it's like they're my friends, and they have certainly cheered for me too. Of course I want to publish and sell and have readers like they do, but that means sending out good vibes if I want the same to come to me.

Shah Wharton said...

Stephen's cover is spinning around the web today... Gravity sounds like a must-see... And hey, FB is a time suck and I mostly automate my participation on that site. If I'm on there, it's usually to tack and communicate with family I miss every day. Ninja should do what suits Ninja! :)

Facebook is a great networking tool... but it can be a dangerous time suck as well.
You've got to sign on, do your bit and then exit... it requires self-discipline, because before you know it, you'll be deep into a series of awesome conversations... there's lots of writerly empowerment going on there! Really buzzing!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Nicki, check with Mark Means - he's the master when it comes to Google+.

JE, avoiding the distraction.

Michael, this one is very unique in 3D - and it makes a huge difference in the feel of the film.

Danette, there will always be someone like that...

Helena, that's why I'm not there.

Thank you SO much for the shout out about EotS!!! MUCH appreciated.

I understand your not wanting to be on FB. If it wasn't the main way I stay in contact with my extended family which is spread all over the US, I'd avoid it too. Time suck indeed!!

LOVE the cover - it's the only one (other than my own of course) that caught my eye. Definitely has that mysterious feel, making me want to pick it up & see what it's all about.

klahanie said...

Aha and author CD Coffelt, with my tongue firmly placed in cheek, well maybe firmly placed in cheek, plenty of self-centred, self-promoting folks out there. Yep, the make out like all these groups are their way of showing care when in actuality, it's just their way of ego-tripping. Seriously, ignore me, yes me, KLAHANIE.

Pat in da Hatt and the alphabet. Make it stop!

Well done to Mr. Tremp with the revealing of his cover.

Despite your concerns about 'Farcebook', I find it ironic you're not on there. Still, I'm having a great time satirising the IWSG group on there. And I use Facebook to share and promote your blog and many, many more. It's good for bringing further awareness and the site doesn't need to be time-consuming.

There you go. I'm outta' here...

If there's going to be a selfish motive behind helping others, aiding more books into the world is reasonable :)

Also, Eye of the Soul looks great. That cover is very eye-catching!

Good for you for avoiding FB. Continue to avoid it. I rarely use it... and that's OK by me. Plus, you have a very strong online presence already!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Lydia, exactly!

Liz, I shall avoid it!

Selfish, but in a good way. That's how I see it.

I don't blame you for not being on FB at all. For me, I have family all over the world, and it's the only way we can instantly share pics of our kids and keep in touch.

Otherwise, I'd be GONE!

Hi Alex :) Love the new Insecure Writers site! Yes, I suppose it's true...writers, bloggers and the like might be considered a little bit greedy. What would we do without our wonderful community and all the work we produce - hmmm... maybe workaholics describes us better, or perhaps passionate, word frenzy artists. Regardless, it's really great to be one! It's even better to get to know so many more!

G. B. Miller said...

Just checked out the new website and decided to follow as well. For the time being, I'll just lurk.

As for Facebook, I can completely sympathize with not going on. I was actually off for about 8 months, but since my current publish is heavily into social media, I wound up reactivating my account. I don't go hog wild friend people for the sake of friending, so I balance my desire of being private in public forum by having a "follow" button.

RaShelle Workman said...

Congrats to Ella! Congrats to the new releases. And I like your POV about why we help. It's very satisfying - at least for me - to help others find their happiness. I can do that (to a very small degree) in the publishing world. It's fun helping others.

As for GRAVITY... Hmmm, I wasn't going to see the movie. I thought it looked boring. Maybe I'll change my mind.

You have my blessing to avoid FB. I'm there, but I'd rather not be. And I can't wait to see Gravity :)

I think limiting the number of social media networks we join is very wise. I chose blogging, Twitter, and Facebook with limited exposure on Goodreads. That's more than enough.

Hi Alex .. you do promote so much for so many - and we're all grateful .. I get to read about new authors who I'd have never known about. Love Stephen's cover reveal ..

Facebook - I have to say I agree with you .. but may move over when I'm ready. Social media does take a lot of time .. but it's interesting to learn about ..

Good luck with putting some writing time in! Cheers Hilary

I've had a Facebook profile since way back in 2005 when it was still pretty new. I didn't create the profile though. One of my college friends made it for me, then insisted I use it. So I did, and I'm still using it to this day.

Maybe I'm just too good a friend. And yes, Facebook has tremendous time-suckage abilities.

Pft. And here I thought it was my altruistic goodness. LOL Great post. :)

I've been debating the FB issue for some time. The problem is, my brother lives in Canada and many of my friends and family members live out of state. There are people I know I would all but lose touch with if I closed my account. *shrugs* I have an author page there, but I haven't done much with it.

I do agree with you that authors need to choose a few key social media venues and focus on those.

Lots of good news! Congrats to all! :D

I'm looking forward to Gravity. I like movies and planetarium stuff that makes you really feel like you're in space.

Getting to this late, but it was such a good post!

I'm excited to see Gravity. It's had lukewarm reviews, but from everybody I personally KNOW, it's been fan-freaking-tastic.

I've also found that social media sucks as much time as you allow. My main outlet is FB, although I tweet and G+ it, too. But I never let myself get bogged down by any of it. Too much other stuff to do.

I've said this before; I'll say it again...Alex, you are remarkable to do the things you already do.

GREAT post. Thanks.
