The Geek Twins and Greatest Movies Based on Science Fiction Stories! Plus Ninja News and CassaStorm Launch and Tour Updates.

Today I welcome Nigel and Maurice, the awesome brothers who run The Geek Twins!

My brother Maurice and I run the blog, The Geek Twins, where we celebrate sci-fi movies and TV shows. Sci-fi writers have always had a cozy relationship with Hollywood. Their imagination and grand vision have been translated into some fantastic movies. To celebrate them, we present the ten greatest movies based on a sci-fi story.

10. A Clockwork Orange - In a dystopian Britain, a sociopathic youth is subjected to an experiment that makes him physically incapable of violence. Based on the novel of the same name by Anthony Burgess.

9. 1984 - In a dystopian Britain, one man tries to deft the government that monitors and controls all aspects of life. Based on the novel of the same name by George Orwell.

8. Children of Men - In a near future where mankind has become infertile, a man must escort the last pregnant woman to safety. Based on the novel of the same name by PD James.

7. Planet of the Apes - When astronauts crash land on another planet, they find simians are dominant and humans treated like beasts. Based on the novel of the same name by Pierre Boulle.

6. Soylent Green - In an overpopulated future, a cop uncovers a horrifying secret about the popular food, Soylent Green. Loosely based on the novel Make Room! Make Room! By Harry Harrison.

5. Solaris - A spaceship crew orbiting around a mysterious planet finds their dreams coming to life. Based on the novel of the same name by Stanislaw Lem.

4. The Thing - An Antarctic crew is overrun with paranoia when a shape-shifting alien invades their camp. Based on the novella, Who Goes There? By John W. Campbell Jr.

3. Jurassic Park - When a theme park full of genetically engineered dinosaurs goes wrong, the first visitors must escape with their lives. Based on the novel of the same name by Michael Crichton.

2. 2001 - A mission from Earth to investigate a mysterious black monolith becomes threatened by the ship's computer. Based on the novel by Arthur C. Clarke.

1. Blade Runner - In a broken-down city of the future, a cop hunts down robots passing as humans. Based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick.

My next tour stop is actually Sunday, and I have the honor of appearing on Anne R Allen’s Blog. Her site is a Writer’s Digest 101 Best Websites for Writers winner, and she brings in some top best-selling authors and professionals. And oh yeah, me!

Next week I will be posting Monday through Friday, updating you on the week’s tour stops and events. And I will be giving away prizes!! One comment per day enters you to win – Cassa magnet, Cassa mug, Cassa mousepad, Cassa poster, and a copy of CassaStorm. So now is not the time to be shy – comment to win!!

And I want to thank all of my hosts and everyone participating in the launch event. I never thought I’d come this far on this crazy journey or experience any kind of real success. You guys helped prove me wrong. Thanks for your support. Your friendship is the greatest treasure and reward.

Wow - I've never been the first to comment on your blog. Got your launch post all ready for 15th! Yo must be so excited.

That is some great list of Sci-fi movies - I love them all, although I haven't watched Soylent Green... yet. :)

Congrats on your launch, your tour stop on such a prestigious blog, and your awesome blurbs (so far so fantastic). X

Those are all great films and belong on the top ten list. My personal favourite is Clockwork Orange though. Probably because it had a profound effect on me when I was young.

I wanted to let you know that your blog didn't update on my blogroll or my reader.

Mine is taking a good 6 hours to hit everything except feedly.

Michelle Wallace said...

Am I getting my comment in early today? Maybe 3rd?

Michelle Wallace said...

Epic Ninja Meltdown? Nah, I don't think so... you'll take it in your stride. I know you will.
Thanks for all the links!

Cathrina Constantine said...

Alex gave you a tiny shout out today looking forward to the 17th. Congrats to Annalisa and Christine. For this post I've actually seen more than half of the movies the Geek Twins have posted. Good Stuff.

Optimistic Existentialist said...

Love the movies on that list. Especially Jurrasic Park. Did you hear that they're coming out with a Jurasic Park IV?

Christine Rains said...

Thank you so much for helping with my cover reveal! I can't wait to see the web taken over by the Storm next week. It'll be awesome to behold. The Geek Twins are fantastic. Great list! Blade Runner would be at the top of my list too. I'll be watching the new Star Trek movie tonight. Have a good weekend!

Jurassic Part was an amazing book and equally great movie.

All set for your launch next week. No meltdown needed.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Anne, that is weird. It updated in my reader.

Michelle, you are on top of things today. And thanks for the vote of confidence.

Cathrina, thanks!

Christine, you're welcome, and enjoy the movie tonight.

Great list as always from the Twins!

I can't wait to follow the tour!

I am partial to all things Philip K Dick had turned into a movie.

See you sunday!

Matthew MacNish said...

Excellent list of movie adaptations!

Melissa said...

Congrats to all!

Would you believe I haven't see all the movies? I did used to watch the series version of Planet of the Apes when I was a kid.

Hope your tour goes well. :)

The Happy Whisk said...

Another well-packed blog post, Alex. Have yourself a good weekend.

Anonymous said...

I feel like I'm in a minority of people who hated the Clockwork Orange movie. The book was awesome, though.

Anonymous said...

Whoops, more to say. lol And I really liked The Thing and Bladerunner, and who doesn't love Jurassic Park?! One of my favorite movies!

Tony Laplume said...

I would seriously consider more Philip K. Dick-based movies, like The Adjustment Bureau.

Brian Miller said...

nice...great list of movies...i have seen most but missed a few on there and will def be correcting that....

Yolanda Renée said...

The Geek Twins hit the nail on the head. Loved those movies! Especially Jurassic Park!

Congratulations Alex on your amazing tour! Will be checking it all out especially the reviews!

Laura Clipson said...

I'm sure you won't meltdown, you're a ninja after all! Good luck with your tour :)

Donna K. Weaver said...

Interesting selection. I enjoyed the Planet of the Apes book. The original series with Charleton Heston was cool in its day with its own unique twist, but the most recent one was closer to the book.

Wendy Tyler Ryan said...

I would definitely put some of those sci fi flicks in a different order. Omega man would be on my list.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Kitty, the latest Dune or the one with Sting half-naked? I probably already know the answer...

David, he wrote some great books.

Melissa, I remember that series.

Debra, we're both in that minority, so don't feel bad.

Donna, I've not read the book, but I did enjoy the latest film.

Julie Dao said...

Christine's book sounds awesome! And I'm looking forward to your launch party!

Maurice Mitchell said...

Thanks for hosting us Alex! The epic meltdown begins!

Maurice Mitchell said...

@Wendy "Omega Man" is a good choice since it was inspired by the brilliant "I Am Legend" short story.
@David Thanks Man!

Rusty Carl said...

Great list, I'd point out that technically, 2001 wasn't based on the book, as the script and the novel were written together. But the novel actually explains all that weirdness at the end, and probably should be read before seeing the movie imo.

I'm sure next week will be epic with the CassaStorm release.

Tyrean Martinson said...

Go Ninja!!! Rock the world! No meltdowns - you're way too cool for that. :)

Carrie-Anne said...

My family, particularly my brother, still teases me about how I felt sympathy for Hal in 2001, and defended the reasoning behind his motivations.

I naturally love really vintage sci-fi films, like Fritz Lang's Frau im Mond (Woman in the Moon) and Georges Méliès's short films like Le Voyage Dans la Lune and Le Voyage à Traverse l'Impossible. The latter film is has a very similar storyline to Lune, only this time they're travelling to the Sun.

Huntress said...

Bladerunner is an excellent choice of the Geek Twins.
Congrats to Annalise, Julia, and Briane!
Super Congrats to Christine, a blogger buddy of mine!

Regarding Epic Meltdown: Wait, let me get the popcorn and easy chair. Okay. Now...

Madeline Mora-Summonte said...

Congratulations, Alex, on all your successes! :)

That list of movies makes me want to re-watch some favorites - The Thing, Jurassic Park, Planet of the Apes.

Suzanne Furness said...

I'm sure your tour will rock the blogosphere! Congrats to all the new releases this week.

Chris Desson said...

Definitely, Jurassic Park, as #1 S/F book to movie.

I love Anne R. Allen- I can't wait to read your blog tour post over there, Alex. Take a breath. Hug a loved one. You've worked hard to get here, so enjoy your success. You have a whole army rooting for you.

Julie Flanders said...

Alex, I signed up for the launch party but didn't receive the info yet. Could you send it to me again? I'd love to be part of the party. It's juliflan@yahoo.com

Great to meet the Geek Twins and I love Christine's cover!

ilima said...

Favorite sci-fi book to movie? Does WARM BODIES count? Haha. I liked the movie much better than the book in that instance. So excited for the Cassa storm to hit next week. (see what I did there? lol) :)

Leovi said...

Certainly, Planet of the Apes is for me one of the best films in the history of cinema!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Rusty, I need to read the ending of the book then.

Carrie-Anne, haven't seen any of those, although I have seen Metropolis.

Huntress, I'm glad you're ready for the show!

Thanks, Christine.

Julie, I will!

Ilima, I did! And haven't seen the movie yet.

Juliana Haygert said...

Almost there! The post on my blog is ready to go! Congrats, Alex!

Karen Baldwin said...

Love your list. CLockwork Orange was strange. I saw it many years later...still strange.

M.J. Fifield said...

Well, I've seen two of those movies. Children of Men and Jurassic Park. I think Jurassic Park's the only one I've read the book for as well. Both were very well done, I thought.

Heather M. Gardner said...

Love the Geek Twins. I get their posts by email and it makes my day to see what they have going on.

No Ninja meltdown! You are doing just great. This is gonna be a blast!

Get some rest this weekend!

Christine's book is getting the star treatment it deserves. The Geek Twins did well and I must say I am a fan of Children of Men. Congrats Annalisa and Alex we'll be here for your meltdown/trilogy awesomeness.

Steven said...

Love me some Jurassic Park and 2001! What about Dune? :)

Roland D. Yeomans said...

Loved all the movies listed by the Geek Twins except CHILDREN OF MEN -- that was just plain depressing.

I'm glad you liked my and Mark Twain's tribute to you, Alex.

Michael Offutt, Phantom Reader said...

I'm so excited for the CassaStorm release party.

I wonder why the Geek Twins didn't give Jules Vern any love? I mean sure the movie is old, but I thought 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was hugely influential to me as a child in liking the genre. And what about Logan's Run? That was pretty good too.

John Wiswell said...

I know many people were put off by how much of Children of Men was changed or cut for the film. How did you feel about the movie as an adaptation of James's work, Alex? I agree that independently it has a very strong tone.

Pat Hatt said...

Never even heard of Soylent Green before, the rest I've seen though. Will have to look that one up. Hmm Terminator 2 would be on my list.

Also video is set for thursday at my sea haha

Nicole said...

I didn't know "Clockwork Orange" nor "Children of Men" were adapted from books. Given how sick the former is, I doubt I'd want to read the material that it's based on but if "Children of Men" is anything like its printed counterpart, then I'd be willing to give it a try. The movie version was a little off-putting at first when I watched it but it didn't take long for me to enjoy the film and it's among my two favorites on this list...the other being "Jurassic Park."

Joylene Nowell Butler said...

I love that the brothers picked my all time favourite S/F movie BLADE RUNNER. I love that movie. I even read the book! It was the very first movie we ever rented for our then-new video player, back when our 40+ year old sons were kids. Wow, that was almost 30 years ago. I love the music too! This would all be so wonderful, except now I'm reminded just how old I am!

Catherine Stine said...

Yay to you for your upcoming launch! And yay to Christine for her series. I will be featuring both of you fabulous authors on my blog too. Blade Runner is one of my all-time faves, and I really liked the new Planet of the Apes.

Rawknrobyn.blogspot.com said...

I'm so ignorant about the world of cinema, I didn't know 1984 was a movie. I loved the book, and now I'd like to see the film.

Looking forward to your book launching. Enjoy every moment of your amazing journey.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

MJ, not to scare you but I've seen all of them.

Steven, which version?

Roland, it was depressing, but very well done.

Michael, good point!

John, I've only seen the movie, so no point of reference there.

Pat, thanks!

Nicole, Clockwork Orange is twisted.

Rachna Chhabria said...

Will get your book launch post ready to go on the 20th. I am sure everyone will be rushing in to get their posts to go up in the first few days, so I deliberately kept it on the 20th, I would like the 'take the world by storm' momentum to be high till the 21st.

But Alex, if you want the post to go up earlier let me know. I am okay with that too.

Have been keen on seeing the Bladerunner from a long time.

Good morning from a dark and foggy England!

Nigel and Maurice, The Geek Twins! Sci-fi has such a cosy or cozy relationship with Hollywood that a lot of the Sci-fi films are now filmed in Vancouver. "Tomorrowland" is being filmed there. I do like your top ten choice, my geek friends.

Yep saw you checking out the 'Unicorn's Bell and I still would like a clone, please. Why else would I be commenting at five in the morning.

I'm quite in the know with many of your links, Alex. Nice of you to make mention.

Joust a moment. On a serious note and please pay heed, Alex, please do not put too much pressure on yourself. You promise?

Take care and look after YOU!

While I adore the 1984 novel, I don't think the movie did it real justice. It was a fine movie, though, and V for Vendetta was practically a carbon copy (loved that one, too, though!)

Soylent Green for the most definite win!! I saw the movie as a kid and even then it hit me as an amazing (yet disturbing) story. I'm so excited for your release, Alex! And soooooo excited to read!!! Too bad people can't offer digital signatures with ebooks, because I'd totally ask for one!!

I've been so far behind and haven't visited. Sorry! Good luck with everything, it has been my absolute pleasure to help you reveal this amazing book. I will stop by the tour late, but hopefully I will hit all your stops. :)

Best of luck, my friend. And as Lee has been your rock, you have been mine. My blog world opened up big time when we crossed paths. Thank you so much, my friend.
