A to Z Challenge – Avengers, Captain America, and As I Am - Plus Ninja News and Special Thanks

My theme for the A to Z Challenge is Favorite Movies, Bloggers, and Music! I’ll name a favorite movie that corresponds with the letter, and then select a character from the film. I will then name a favorite blogger who reminds me of that character, and then dedicate a song to him. (Also corresponding with the alphabet.) I’ll wrap it all up with trivia and/or fun facts about the movie, the blogger, or the music!

In addition, two lucky commenters this month will receive a review copy of CassaStorm!.One comment per day and each is worth one entry except – the first and one hundredth comments on each day will receive ten entries!

The Avengers

One of the greatest superhero films ever. It really captures the feel of the comic book. It was amazing to see all the heroes come to life on the big screen. Whedon did a great job creating a cohesive, engaging story.

Captain America is a gentle, innocent soul with a heart of gold. He’s truly unselfish, placing the concerns of others above himself.

Who is Captain America?

Father Dragon, Al Diaz!
Blogging at Father Dragon Writes, Al is a very genuine person. He stands ready to champion those in need. He came into this community curious and eager to learn. Al possesses great wisdom and is willing to share with anyone who will listen. It’s been an honor to get to know him better and call Al my friend. He’s a Dragon Captain now, but one day he’ll be the Dragon General!

Al is a translator, artist, writer, and dwarf wrangler.

To you Al, I dedicate As I Am, by Dream Theater

“To those who understand, I extend my hand, to the doubtful I demand, take me as I am”

You are your own Dragon – stay that way!

Facts and Trivia –

This Ninja may have clones, but did you know Al employs dwarves to assist him? Although this month, they are part of my Ninja Minions team!

Joe Johnston directed Captain America. What other superhero/adventure type movie did he direct twenty years ago?

Susan Gourley’s latest book, Marine’s Queen, was released by New Concepts Publishing last week. Congratulations, Susan!

Yolanda Renee at Defending the Pen signed a deal for two books with Curiosity Quills Press. Congratulations, Yolanda!!

RaShelle Workman’s latest book, Cindy Witch, is available now. You rock, RaShelle!

Juliana Haygert’s book, Destiny Gift, is really available today! I know I posted about it on Friday, but in the A to Z Challenge confusion, I got the date wrong.

Special Thanks – This is For You, Lee!

Three years ago, a fellow blogger announced a challenge to blog the letters of the alphabet in April. I waited until the last moment to commit, and joined a hundred other bloggers attempting the same challenge. I winged it, coming up with brilliant topics such as Q*Bert and Q (yes, the awful 80’s flim) for “Q.”

By the end of the month, my blog was changed forever. I went from thirty followers to over eighty and made so many amazing friends, such as Ella, Yvonne, and Jamie. I’d connected with the community in an amazing way and found my groove as a blogger.

And I owe all of that to Arlee Bird at Tossing it Out. Lee, had you not thrown out that Challenge, I don’t know where I’d be today, because I’d floundered here online for five months without any real success at that point. It’s been an honor to serve as a co-host for the past three Challenges. Lee, you can count on my support and friendship forever! Thank you.

Fan of the Avengers or Captain America? (Melissa, don’t answer that!) Following the awesome Father Dragon? Know the movie Joe Johnston directed? Excited about the new book releases? And Challenge veterans, what has the Challenge meant to you?

Avengers is the perfect choice for A. I liked Captain America a lot, but I think Thor and Iron Man were my favourites.

Loved the Avengers. I did participate in an A to Z challange and gained many followers from it. It was lots of fun too.

Hey Alex, Well you certainly know how to draw people in. Avengers and Captain America all on the first day of A to Z. Nice work. I just discovered Mr. Diaz a few weeks ago. Great pick.

It's amazing that Arlee's idea has become so successful. Thanks for all the news about book releases, and all the info that's fit to print about Al.

I'm worried about the minions though - what if the dwarves get hungry and eat the clones - or what if the clones get hungry and eat the dwarves? Even worse - what if the DRAGON gets hungry???

Wow, a Dream Theater song. That's a group I haven't heard of in a while. You put A LOT into your theme for this month. I'm excited to see how that continues over the course of the challenge.

Golden Eagle said...

Excellent challenge theme! Can't wait to read your posts for the rest of the month.

I am not following Father Dragon. I'm off to correct that . . .

Mina Burrows said...

I loved reading the part about Arlee. That's so cool. I still keep in touch with bloggers I met at the begining too.

I didn't want to comment until I listened to and visited everyone. I had never heard the Dream Theatre song before, but it was very theatrical and 80s??? I liked Al's blog and am now following. Loved The Avengers. I think everything Joss Whedon does is gold. Honestly. And I really like your theme. Very On The Money. I think everyone will really enjoy it. So, even though you have aimed high, I think it will be a resounding success!!!!

Dani said...

Great themes and tributes to some awesome bloggers! Al and Arlee are two of my fave "A" bloggers for sure!
I like Armageddon; "end of days" movies are killer! Also what a cool giveaway!

Lexa, if the dragon gets hungry, I'm returning the dwarves, pronto!

Emily, they are still going strong.

Robin, Dream Theater is progressive rock, and they've been around a long time, so they have elements from many ages and style. Which is another reason I like them!

I loved The Avengers movie and Captain America especially. Very cool.

My boys went to see the new Avengers movie on Saturday. Hubby and I went to see "Olympus Has Fallen" to which we both had a lukewarm reaction. Got my A-post up, heading off to work on my comments and new follows.

Ah... another movie theme. Like it! I went a bit willy nilly instead. Will be fun to ck out what you list.

Yes, what an awesome Challenge. I've thanked Lee too. Can't believe it's only 3 years and you are the Blog King!

Rusty Carl said...

This might be the cleverest theme I've seen yet. Way to kick it off! I'm slow on the draw this time around but I hope to be picking up the pace here.

Eric said...

Alex, you are so awesome. Just as you give thanks to Arlee for tossing out the challenge, I have to give the same thanks to you. Your blog introduced me the challenge and even when I'm not blogging regularly, I feel the absolute need to do this challenge. Oh, and the Avengers ranks up there as the absolute best superhero movie of all time. That and LOTR are my favorite films ever.

Chuck said...

Alex, all I can say is wow!! What a start for your theme. I need to go check out the Dragon. And , I still need to see the Avengers!!

And dwarf wrangling sounds like Cat Juggling?

Your tribute to Lee was pretty cool, I can see how you have grown so successful. Keep rockin'!!

We loved the Avengers. The girls had a blast "studying up" by watching as many of the other hero movies first. Just hoping they don't figure out that there are all of those comics to catch up with! Ouch!

Krista McLaughlin said...

I am a fan of the Avengers; definitely. You hit the nail on the head because Captain America is my favorite of the Avengers! I love how loyal he is and also (you probably won't agree cuz you're a guy) he has an amazing butt. :)

Cathy Keaton said...

That Avengers movie is really great and I love Captain America! He's one of my fave superheroes. I also can't wait for Ironman 3. Looks like it'll be the best one yet! ;)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Mary, you have no idea...

Claire, I can't believe it's been three either!

Rusty, clever and out of control!

Eric, are you joining us? Awesome!

Chuck, cat juggling sounds painful!

Bryan, that would be a lot of comics to buy...

Thanks, everyone!

LMAO!! I won't answer except to say that Al is the CA of Avengers, who was wiser and stronger.

I can't believe this is my 3rd year of doing this A to Z. I think your theme this year is wonderful and Arlee is the Tao of Blogging.

Anonymous said...

This is an awesome them. I'm really quite interested to find out what movies and characters you come up with as well bloggers that remind you of those characters.

Marcy said...

I haven't seen The Avengers, but look forward to reading more about movies, bloggers and music.

I've never heard of Father Dragon, but may have to check that one out!

Good luck with A to Z. I'm trying it myself at http://www.deborahdera.com if you'd like to stop by!

Tracy Jo said...

What a great idea! Love your theme. Going to be so fun to read about everyone. Cheers!

Kern Windwraith said...

I'm embarrassed to admit that I still haven't seen The Avengers, although it's high on my list. I do, however, follow the awesome Father Dragon, so I'm doing something right!

Up until an hour before the challenge registration closed, I wasn't going to participate…and then, boom! I found my theme. Nothing like a looming deadline to get a person in gear. :)

Loved your shootout to Arlee.

My favorite Avenger is Captain America. I made a shield made of cardboard many years ago.

Saumya said...

Hi!! Not doing A-Z but so excited to read your next book, Alex :) Major congratulations!!

Enjoyed the movie Avengers. I loved Thor but to me Iron Man owned the movie!

Jessica Marcarelli said...

I love what you did with this post - now I'm hooked and have to come back tomorrow. ;)

As for the Challenge, I've only done it once before. My experience with last year's A to Z gave me the confidence and courage to begin writing what I really want to write - my visitors were all so encouraging and instrumental in helping me there.

I couldn't have found a better post for the A to Z challenge! I absolutely loved the Avengers and Captain America movies. They kept the richness of the plot and gave us excellent FX in all the scenes. I know they had to have had fun with all the character interactions from Stark's awe of Bruce Banner and some general disdain of Captain America until they finally come together in the final scenes. Of course, not to give any spoilers, I love what the Hulk did to Loki at the end of the final battle.

The fact they kept true to each character's personality couldn't have been better. How could you not like the Avengers movie?

Ran off on a tangent there. XD Loved the post and it was a fun read, too.

Feel free to come and visit my challenge posts, and blog in general, over at candacegauger.wordpress.com. It could make you hungry for more.

Blazing saddles has to be my husband's favorite movie of all time. I think he likes the complete lack of political correctness.

Ninjas and dwarves? I need my own army. Nerdlings maybe?

I love Advengers- I am superhero movie fan! :) And I think Advengers is one of the best. And cheers to Al!

Blazing Saddles is the funniest Mel Brooks movie next to Young Frankenstein. I'd throw some quotes, but it take all day. Mark is awesome indeed.

That's a nice outtake from Dream Theater, Al.

This is such a nice idea for your posts.

Loved the Avengers - well I am a Joss Whedon groupie (his TV series are featuring heavily in one of my A to Z challenges). Captain America wasn't my favourite film of the set though.

Rick Daley said...

Great job on the theme, in thought and execution.

I love the Avengers, and I love Joss Whedon. This is very well thought out. Great work!

I like the way you are featuring a blogger with each post to go along with a movie. Started with you e post and worked my way backwards. This one had a blogger I already discovered and really liked. I need to get back to read more of the Father Dragon posts.

Thanks Alex for what you do to help with the A-Z

Father Dragon is awesome.

Arlee rocks. I'm so glad he came up with this idea.

I'm an avid reader and have never been a big movie-watcher. That's changed recently and my sons and I have been watching the Marvel Universe Phase One movies (we're going to watch all the Marvel Universe movies next because we're just a little OCD like that). We just watched The Avengers this past week. We LOVED it. Actually, we've watched it three times already. (She said sheepishly.) The Captain America movie wasn't my favorite because the ending was just too sad, but Captain America the character is fabulous.
And your posts. Wow. I feel like such a slacker now. LOL
