Cindy Borgne Discusses Wormholes, Ninja News, Celebrating Small Things, Mini-Alex and his Peeps, Special Thanks, and Movie Quotes Trivia

Today I welcome fellow science fiction author, Cindy Borgne!

Wormholes:

In my first book “Seer of Mars”, the main reason for mankind coming to Mars is a long-term project to reach an Earth-like planet called Hinun in the Cancri fifty-five system, which is almost identical to our solar system. Someone told me that it sounded so Star Wars-ish like the Dagobah system.

However, Mars and Cancri 55 are real places, and for the sequel “Visionary of Peace”, I needed to answer a question. How do they plan to reach Hinun? Finally, I settled on using a wormhole for travel purposes - maybe because they’re more artistic.

Although a wormhole has never been created, they aren’t just something from science fiction. The theory for them is based in physics. This led to the challenge of my characters creating the first wormhole in the most difficult of circumstances. Early attempts were less than impressive. At first, my physicists ended up generating small, unpredictable wormholes only capable of lasting for a few seconds in a lab.

No such thing as a small wormhole you say? According to astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, “wormholes may exist in quantum foam, the smallest environment in the universe. Here, tiny tunnels constantly blink in and out of existence, momentarily linking separate places and time.”

Yet even small wormholes don’t run on thin air and need something to generate them. I needed exotic matter – another conceptual aspect of physics. Where could I get this stuff? When reading the definitions for exotic matter.

Exotic Matter: Any kind of matter that is not made up of baryons (protons and neutrons) and has both negative energy density and negative pressure or tension that exceeds the energy density.

How rambling is that?

However, the biggest problem with the small, short-term wormhole is that it has no use in reaching Hinun. Still, I couldn’t let the dream of reaching Hinun die for my long suffering characters. I needed something more and I found it.

Thanks for having me today, Alex.

Kelley Lynn’s book, Fraction of Stone, was released on Thursday! Congratulations, Kelley.
She’s on her blog tour right now and you can win a copy of her book. Check her site for details.

Misha Gericke announced the categories for this month’s Paying it Forward Awards:

Visit her blog to cast your nominations now!

And for VikLit’s “Celebrating the Small Things,” I have two things I'm celebrating!
First, this is post number 600. Whoa!
Second, I have over 1800 followers now. Double whoa!!

Mini-Alex and His Peeps

Mini-Alex may not get out much, but he does have friends!

Here he is hanging with his peeps, admiring Robyn Alana Engel’s book, Just the Right Time!

And it’s really cold today, so he hopes his scarf arrives soon.

Special Peeps

I want to mention two special ladies.

As I’ve noted before, my guest post guidelines state that I only allow blogger buddies.

I get requests every week, and I’m polite when I explain my guidelines and why. Most I never hear from again. One guy unfollowed me immediately.

However, two ladies, once I explained how it works, decided to become my blogger buddies. Two out of hundreds.

Joylene Nowell Butler and Sandra Ulbrich Almazan, I want to thank you for taking that step. You two can guest post anytime you like!

Movie Trivia

Movie quotes today – all science fiction! Name the movie – and the actor/character if you can:

1 – “If this is foreplay, I’m a dead man.”

2 – “The Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice, ‘We will not go quietly into the night…’”

3 – “His pattern indicates two-dimensional thinking.”

4 – “Can I ask you a personal question? Have you ever retired a human by mistake?”

5 - “I just want to know that it’s really happening.”

Ready to read Cindy's books? Nominating someone for the Paying it Forward Awards? Ready to hang with Mini-Alex and his Peeps? And know any of the trivia answers?

I haven't been this far up the post chain in forever. :)

Adding Cindy's books to my list, they sound absolutely brilliant.

Yay to Joylene and Sandra, being a blog buddy of yours is one of the best things about our community.

Happy Friday, have an epic weekend!

Cindy's book sounds exciting and well researched. Glad you have two more blogger buddies and mini Alex and hi peeps look quite happy with themselves. The movie trivia choices made me laugh.

Can you believe the weather in NC? Feels like winter. And a record low temperature here in the Charlotte area this morning.

Love Mini-Alex. :)

Wormholes are fascinating. I wouldn't ever be able to understand the science behind them enough to be able to pull off writing one into a story, though! Looks like you've done a great job, Cindy.

I'd recognize number two anywhere. Independence Day is on my top five all time favorite movie list!!

It's chilly here in FL this morning, but it will definitely warm up later, which I and the the tortoises will appreciate. :)

And I believe #2 is INDEPENDENCE DAY. Love that movie.

I adore SF, but Cindy's post reminds me of why I don't write it -- all that scientific world-building is too hard! But congrats to Cindy (and all SF authors) for being so smart and giving us fans great stuff to read.

Yay for the 600th post and 1800 followers - WOW!

1 - ?
2 - Independence Day
3 - Star Trek?
4 - I Robot
5 - ?
(I'm not very good at this, am I? lol)

Thanks for sharing your knowledge of wormholes with us, Cindy. I look forward to reading more about them in your book--and seeing what else your characters come up with.

Alex, I was pleasantly surprised by the mention. It's been harder lately to find the time for commenting, but I needed the nudge to make it more of a priority. As for the guest post, I plan to work on it next Friday, since work is closed and daycare is open. ;)

Hi, Alex,

I actually know one of the trivia questions.

first one. Steve Guttenberg... Cocoon.

Todays's my last day of internet for a while.... at least until Monday when I can get to a B&N.... NOOOO! On the plus side I might be able to FINISH my rewrites, crtis and get back to my Novella. I DON'T want to disappear again and I WON'T but I will have limited wifi an therefore limited time blogging. BUMMER.... I am freaked about it, but it's a choice between staying warm in Florida OR FREEZING in Chicago....

CONGRATS to ANGELA and KELLEY! ALL THE BEST!

CONGRATS ON YOUR 1800! That is so AWESOME! I am still inching my way to 700 ... perhaps in the A-Z.... NOW that will be challenging with limited wifi access. I believe there is a library near to where I will be staying and if it's close by, I will go every morning in April to visit blogs for a few hours. I had hoped to get half of my A-Z done these past few days but.... other stuff got in the way. Thankfully I can WRITE them and schedule posts by the previous week. Doing a few this morning ..... A first for me! LOL. I usually write them the night before they are due.

Tina said...

I'm not awake yet, but I'd recognize ANY line from Independence Day. His speech to the pilots gives me goosebumps every single time I watch it, with has been close to 100. Whenever I get frustrated with the state of our nation, I like to watch the White House blow up. And of course there's Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith, two of my favorites.

I think mini-Alex should do some more posing with books...great idea.

Congrats on 1800 followers, and 600 posts. I'm quickly approaching 400 posts...trying to decide how to celebrate...

Thanks again for having me here today, Alex. I'm excited! As Lexa pointed out world building in SF is harder. However, I've had this world with me a long time. Probably too long. Lol..

I actually know a few of those quotes this time.

Good luck Cindy with Visionary of Peace! Most books, movies, and TV shows spend little if any time on how wormholes are opened and maintained. They just have them in the story. Or if there is an explanation, its very short.

3 – “His pattern indicates two-dimensional thinking.” Wrath of Khan (in the Mutara nebula-also easy....only Spock could say that)

4 – “Can I ask you a personal question? Have you ever retired a human by mistake?” Blade Runner (educated guess-I think I recall the scene) if not that, then I Robot would be my wild guess...

5 - “I just want to know that it’s really happening.” no guess on this one...

Now I'm afraid to walk outside.
If I do, I hope I can get sucked into a wormhole that will take me to Cancun 5. Hear there's a lot of partying going on there.

Tyrean, two and a half right.

Mel, some days I just can't.

Patsy, you are correct, and that made me chuckle.

Annalisa, I'm willing to try!

I can't imagine unfollowing someone simply because they wouldn't allow me to post on THEIR blog. That is beyond strange. However, there is a lot of that out there... strange, that is.

I'm reading Cindy's book for sure, sounds way cool! And Alex, you are the nicest blogger around . . . I can't imagine anyone unfollowing you, but it was their loss!

Yes, I like the fascinating subject of wormholes.

Wow, physics is over my head so I think I'll refrain from creating wormholes in my novels!

Those movie quotes are vexing. The only one I think I know if #2 Independence Day.

LOL, no Alex. Log as in go to bush, cut down dead tree, cut log into bite size pieces for firewood! Wouldn't that be fun? Sounds like fun, eh!

Thanks again for mentioning my awards. :-)

Cindy's stories sound amazing.

Congrats, Cindy. I think the concept of worm holes is fascinating. I love the info you shared with us, and I'm glad you worked out a solution to reach Hinun! How cool!

Alex - I'm clueless as far as what movies those quotes are from! Have a great week.

I'm not in sci/fi but I do find wormholes fascinating. There was a program on NatGeo about a supposed wormhole in a sacred mountain in a Latin American country that made a believer out of me. I'm sure Cindy will sort out the how's and why's.

Mini Alex is cute.

As to the movies--clueless!

No idea on the movie trivia but I loved those quotes.

Jamie, thank you!

Jennifer, you are correct.

Joylene, I don't speak your language...

Misha, you're welcome.

Lynda, two is better than none.
