Ninja News, Thanks, Movie Remakes, and Super Quiz

The wonderful and talented author, Annalisa Crawford, invited me to visit her blog today. She wanted to know what made my blog so popular and she wouldn’t accept “I have no idea” for an answer! Visit her site to see what answer I made up instead.

Ninja News!

Our very own Cassie Mae has an agent!! Congratulations, Cassie. You are going to be the best and most amusing author ever – and I mean that in a good way!

Rachel Morgan’s next book, Masquerade, is available today. This is the fourth book in the Creepy Hollow series. Congratulations, Rachel!

Want to know all the details about using photos on your site and copyright issues? Denise Covey at L’Aussie Writer put together a great post on the subject, complete with links to free image sites.

You know Sean McLachlan is an author, but did you know he also contributes travel articles to Gadling. Right now he has a series running called "Exploring Orkney: Scotland's Rugged Northern Isles." Check out Gadling’s SITE.

I also updated the Awesome Authors and Books page and am working on adding more blogs to my sidebar - if you are a regular blogger buddy of mine and you don't see your book or your link, let me know!

Special Thanks!

A big thank you to the awesome people of the UK who’ve purchased my books! I don’t know who you are or how it happened, but my books have bounced around in the top one hundred for science fiction on Amazon UK for three months now – and it just blows my mind. Thanks so much! And to think I didn’t even want to be an author…

Movie Remakes

Love them or hate them, here’s some more movies being remade in the next couple years:

Child’s Play – I didn’t think the first series was very good
Dune – Because we can never have too many versions I guess
Short Circuit – Guess Johnny Five does look a little dated
Suspiria – First one was weird and creepy enough
Tomb Raider – Time to reboot all those video game movies now

Super Quiz!

Anyone remember that trivia game? Let’s play!

Science – How many colors are there considered to be in a rainbow?

Sports – What is the official diameter of a hockey puck in inches?

Geography – Name the reef off the NE coast of Australia.

History – Name the first permanent English colony on the American mainland.

Movies – Who played Hawkeye in the movie M.A.S.H?

Words – A handwriting expert is called a ___?

Next Week!

Monday is the August movie preview and trivia answers
Wednesday is post day for the Insecure Writer’s Support Group
Friday I have a special guest

Excited about all the great news and cool links this week? Think those movies should be remade? Know any of the trivia answers? (Come on, try to guess at least one!) Any plans for the weekend besides staying out of the heat?

Don’t forget to visit Annalisa!

Great news about your book being bought from this side of the pond.
I showed it to my pc doctor the other week and he said he was going to buy it.
Do my book qualify to go on your sidebar?
Looking forward to next weeks going ons in between watching the Olympics.
Have a great day.

And thanks for the post on my blog today. Can't believe how many blogs you manage to visit!!

Thanks for the shout out, Alex! Orkney was awesome and very inspirational as a writer. I'm already working on a short story set on Eynhallow, an uninhabited and supposedly haunted island I visited.

I'm not crazy about any of those re-makes. Well done on the UK sales!

Huh. I didn't know they were remaking Dune. I'd be intrigued to see how that turns out, actually!

Child's Play... *shudders*... like we needed more of Chucky.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Hey Yvonne! Your book is there on the author page.

Annalisa, thank YOU!

Sean, you're welcome, and that sounds cool.

Ricky, rarely are they needed. And thanks.

Elizabeth and Suzanne, it's stunning!

Sangu, the only Chucky I like is Jon Gruden.

Science: Um nine?
sports: Pffft
Geography: Great Barrier Reef
History: Jamestown?
Movies: Alan Alda
Words: .....

I loved Short Circuit. I'm not sure how I feel about a remake.

Congrats to everyone!

Brinda said...

Sadly, I don't care to see any of those movies remade. :)

StratPlayerCJF said...

Congratulations on the UK success! The book deserves it!

Science: Well, every color can be broken down into combinations of the three primary, right, so I'll just go with that and say "three". Or thinking another way, how 'bout "infinite", since there really aren't any discrete breaks in the wavelengths between the apparent color bands.

Sports: Not a hockey guy, so I'll guess 3.5?

Geography: The Great Barrier Reef?

History: Jamestown?

Movies: Let's see it was Elliot Gould and Donald Southerland but I'm not sure which was Trapper and which was Hawkeye.

Words: Uh, a penmanographer?

And as for the remakes, I guess they think that if they keep trying they'll eventually get a Dune movie that's as good as the book. Either that or it's going to be some really bad idea, like "Dune: The Musical!" where Johnny Depp sings, "Sandman, Bring Me a Dream."

Heading off to Annalisa's. I loved the old Child's Play, had that mix of cheese, gore and humor that I live for in horror. Plus, how do you replace Brad Dourif and an actual creepy doll? CGI and Jackie Earle Haley? LOL

Cool trivia, I just remember the rainbow using Roy G. Biv Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet. Don't know if that's scientifical. ;)

Happy Friday!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Chris, you got three through five right. And that version of Dune sounds horrible!

Melissa, Haley could play the actual doll.

Shelly, I do sleep!

Karen, I will!

Jeremy, might be dangerous if there were that many of me.

Thanks, Natalie!

I know most people hated the 1984 Dune, but I liked it. Maybe it was the half-naked Sting.

Hawkeye was Donald Sutherland.

Okay, I think I might actually know the answers to your trivia to day. Let's see.

Science: Priamary, I would say 7 colors, but if you get technical, it could be closer to infinity.

Sports: 3 inches in diameter

Geography: The Great Barrier Reef

History: Jamestown

Movies: Donald Sutherland

Words: Graphologist

I might actually know (have goot guesses for) some trivia (don't faint!)

rainbow - ROYGBIV so 7???
puck - 4???
reef - Great Barrier
colony - does Plymouth Rock count (I don't think so, but hey, I'm Canadian...)
Hawkeye - Alan Alda
handwriting - I feel like I'll do a facepalm when I hear the answer to this one...

as for the colors in the rainbow- i learned this acronym in college --ROYGBIV - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.

Congratulations on your book sales! I keep having this thought/feeling that Hollywood's doing remakes because nobody can come up with any new ideas.

Kimberly, just glad I'm not round.

Gossip Girl, he was Hawkeye in the TV version.

Kela, you got two. Thank thanks.

Awesome book news. Yeah for you being in the top 100 for 3 months.

I often don't like remakes- so I will be curious how these turn out. Some I didn't really like from the start- Child's Play.

Congrats on the UK stuff. Thanks for all the news.

Dune at the movies will still suck no matter how they remake it. It was made for a TV series.

Trivia I think it's 8 colors in a rainbow. 5 inches on a puck? I should know that one. Great Barrier Reef? Jamestown, VA. Alan Alda. A quillologist [ok, I made that up]

Have a great weekend.

Melissa Sugar said...

Hi Alex, I want to thank you. I hit a major burn out, not just in blogging, but also in my writing and work and life in general. I took some time off and I am back fully recharged. You are such a loyal and good blogger friend. You never failed to visit my blog and I cannot tell you how much that means to me. I feel terrible for my absence, but so rejuvenated that I know it was worth it.

Congratulations to Cassie Mae. Awesome! Awesome! And well deserved. I am excited about reading the other blogger post you have told us about.

I am never a big fan of movie remakes. IMO they never measure up to the original. Maybe one of these will be the exception.

Trivia Time. I was so excited when I saw your questions I could not wait to answer because, for once I actually know some of the answers. (I think).

Handwriting Exemplar- that one was easy because we deal with them all the time at work. I think there are six colors in the rainbow-red, yellow, orange, purple, green and violet. Jamestown for the first colony . Alan Alda played the television role of the character, Captain Benjamen Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce. I was a Mash fanatic. I haven't a clue about the hockey puck, other than I know it is the thing they shoot to make a goal. Oh and the Great Barrier Reef, I think. It is the only reef I know of off the coast of Australia. I wish I would, just once, get questions like these when I play (and lose) trivia pursuit with my husband and teenagers. Yep, the kids whip my butt every time.

Thanks of being such a good blogger bud!

Mel Chesley said...

Dune is being remade? I didn't know that . . . interesting.

OH, I think I know that science question: 6. Isaac Newton originally thought there were 7, but 6 is the actual number (because indigo isn't an individual color--it's just the combination of blue and violet).

Rick said...

No! They're re-making Tomb Raider?? Yikes.

I loved reading the ninja news.

I just hopped onto and out of Annalisa's page.

I'm not too keen on remakes. I hope they do the originals justice.

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

I'm huge fan of Child's Play franchise. I grew up watching the original almost every week, and I love it to bits. The sequels were okay. Is the remake necessary? Hm... that's a tough one.

Dune was one weird mess. I didn't care about it.

Short Circuit - I love it, but it doesn't need to be remade.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

George, never a fan of Child's Play. The novel Dune is is odd, so any movie will feel the same. But rather see new movies that remakes.

My plans for weekend included finally seeing the Dark Knight Rises. So good, soooo gOOd:-) THe ending baffled me though since it looked like they were setting up for another movie but I thought it was the end of the trilogy? Thus, your fame has now spread to the animal world. Congratulations to you, my human friend. I shall go visit Annalisa. Will shall some doggy treats for me?

Child’s Play - The original series became pretty messed up after the first 2 parts. I'm totally ok with a Chucky reboot.

Dune - I seriously want the 14hour version that Alejandro Jodorowsky once wanted to shoot :)

Short Circuit – I guess we can expect this with lots of mediocre CGI and in 3D...

Suspiria - NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

Tomb Raider – Why not?

Leovi said...

I like them all, especially Dune.

Rainbow colours: 7
Geography: Great Barrier Reef (it'll be embarrassing if I get that one wrong, being Australian)
History: Jamestown? I'm thinking Pocohontas here...

And that's it. I got nothing for the others

Congratulations on Uk success!

Information overdose making me happy as usual.....M.a.s.h. fan, Donald Sutherland for the movie, Alan Alda for the tv series. I could answer more of your trivia questions but I don't want to appear too smart :) Finally saw Hatfields and McCoys, YEAH, Loved it!
