July Movie Preview Already?

That’s right – the year is half over! Now prepare for another month of living in a cool movie theater.

All descriptions courtesy of the IMDB. Snarky comments provided by me.

Today – June 29

Transformers: Dark of the Moon
Director: Michael Bay
Stars: Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Tyrese Gibson
The Plot: Against the backdrop of the space race between the U.S.S.R. and the USA, the alliance between Sam Witwicky (LaBeouf) and Optimus Prime is put to the test against a common enemy: Shockwave.
This was scheduled to come out July 1, but they bumped it up a few days. Critics say special effects are amazing but there’s no character development. Hello! It’s Transformers. Soon as I get off work, I’m off to see it in 3D!

July 8

Ironclad
Director: Jonathan English
Stars: Paul Giamatti, Jason Flemyng, Brian Cox
The Plot: In 13th-century England, a small group of Knights Templar fight to defend Rochester Castle against the tyrannical King John (Paul Giamatti)
Could be way cool, but I bet it will be difficult to find in theaters.

Horrible Bosses
Director: Seth Gordon
Stars: Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis
The Plot: Three friends (Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis) make a pact to rid the world of their respective bosses.
Okay, this one caught my attention with the line about Bateman street racing his Prius – “I don’t win much.”

July 15

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II
Director: David Yates
Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint
The Plot: The end begins as Harry, Ron, and Hermione return to Hogwarts to find and destroy the final horcruxes. But when Voldemort finds out about their mission, the battle we've all known has been coming -- Harry vs. Voldemort -- looms large on the horizon. And who will triumph?
Like we don’t know how it ends! Maybe this will be the first Potter movie to cross the billion dollar mark. Just please tell me Harry does more than run…

July 22

Captain America: The First Avenger
Director: Joe Johnston
Stars: Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Samuel L. Jackson
The Plot: After being deemed unfit for military service during WWII, Steve Rogers (Evans) volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, the Sentinel of Liberty -- a superhero dedicated to defending America's ideals. His first mission: to combat the Nazi propaganda effort headed by Johann Schmidt (Weaving), also known as the Red Skull.
Marvel’s been hitting home runs lately and this one should be no different.

July 29

Cowboys and Aliens
Director: Jon Favreau
Stars: Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde
The Plot: In Silver City, Arizona, Apache Indians and Western settlers must lay their differences aside when an alien spaceship crash lands in their city.
Wicked cool! Tell me, what boy hasn’t wanted to see cowboys fight aliens? Besides, Olivia Wilde is hot. Which is good, because Daniel Craig stole Rachel Weisz.

Attack the Block
Director: Joe Cornish
Stars: John Boyega, Jodie Whittaker, Alex Esmail
The Plot: Moses (John Boyega) and the rest of his teen gang look to protect Wyndham Tower -- their housing estate -- from an alien invasion.
Hard to say, but the buzz for this film is good.

So, what are you seeing this month?

Good reviews Alex, you are to films what I am to Daniel..lol

Have a good day.

I like your short reviews. Hubby and I were sitting through previews when we went to see Super 8. The film previews were about alien invasion, robots, comic book characters, wizards, and vampire/werewolves (you know what this one is, I bet!) We looked at each other, then hubby goes: Hm...I guess people are into supernatural stuff right now. And then we had a long convo on why films like these are popular (escapism? A way to forget the state of our reality? etc., etc.) Anyway, it's a good, fun line-up. Nothing thought-provoking per se, but I guess that's ok.

Btw, Super 8 was awesome! :)

Lindsay said...

Harry Potter, Harry Potter, Harry Potter. Oh, and Cowboys and Aliens ;D

Amy said...

Great lineup Alex! I must say I am looking forward to Transformers this weekend. My fiance is taking me to see it in 3D at the Imax theater for our Anniversary; best present ever! :)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Yvonne, you may be right.

Cherie, Super 8 was awesome! Escape movies are popular. If you look at the top twenty highest grossing movies ever, all but one is fantasy-science fiction.

Lindsay, and more Harry Potter?

Gail said...

Cowboys and Aliens...it will interesting to see how that pull that off.

Poor Harry Potter, I probably will not see this one since I know how it ends.

T. Powell Coltrin said...

Great reviews and snarkiness. I want to see Horrible Bosses and Harry Potter in the theater. I'll wait to see Transformers and a couple of the others through Netflix.

I can see you first in line for TF.

JE said...

TRANSFORMERS!!!!!!!!!!!!! That says it all. I totally glossed over the other titles because none of them matter to me like Transformers. I have LOVED that/them/it since I was little. ;-)

Li said...

*Groan* did you have to point out that the year is half over?
I wanted to see Horrible Bosses, but I've heard the word 'funny' used in association with it about a zillion times by now, and so I'm thinking it won't be very funny. That's usually how it goes.
Harry Potter def, simply because I've seen all of the others and therefore I must complete the series.

Old Kitty said...

In the famous words of Spartacus: "I'm Mrs.Craig"!

Attack the Block is absolutely fabulous. S'rsly!!!! Go see!!!!

But I'm afraid July is gonna be Harry Potter month. Take care

I have to see Harry Potter but I must admit I have been looking forward to the release of Cowboys and Aliens for a long time now. Craig, Harrison, a unique concept...it should be fun!

PK HREZO said...

I was so psyched for Cowboys $ Aliens when I first saw the trailer in the theatre. Can't wait to see it!
And I love Jason Bateman in films nowadays ... he's a riot.

Sarah Ahiers said...

what AREN'T i going to see? We'll probably hit transformers this weekend. The only thing i'm worried about is Cowboys and Aliens because we have a wedding on that day, and then parties the rest of the weekend...

Leovi said...

After looking, I think this month I will devote to reading and walking.

Matthew MacNish said...

With a family of four, we can only afford the movies about once a month. So for us it will be Harry Potter!

Jeremy [Retro] said...

hell yes! the july previews look awesome... some heavy hitters and me sitting back row center with my mind turned off and my imagination running wild.... i cannot wait for t3 hp7pt2... thanks for the eye open report.

Mary@GigglesandGuns said...

So many choices....
I love the Prius line ;o)

Heather M. Gardner said...

What I find interesting is the lack of publicity for the new cast members of the Transformers movie. Of course I will see it because of Shia and Josh. DUH! But... Patrick Dempsey! John Malkovich!! ALAN TUDYK!!! Yes, ALAN TUDYK!!!

I am waiting to see HP7p1 right before p2. I can't wait!

Must see Captain America.

I am cautiously optimistic about Cowboys and Aliens. Just not sure how they will pull this off without looking freakish.

Thanks so much for bringing us up to date. Now to get a third job to pay for movie tickets!!

Anonymous said...

I've been told that my seven year old grandson wants to take me to "Transformers" for my birthday...(today)
Little does he know that that's gunna be the BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVER!!!!

Carol Kilgore said...

Horrible Bosses and Cowboys and Aliens sound good. Actually, all of these will probably hit the big time.

julie fedderson said...

Cowboys vs. Aliens? That is a must see for me.

Patricia JL said...

I'm iffy on Transformers. I want to see it but not quite sure it's worth going to the theater after the second one.
Harry Potter... OMG! YES!
Cowboys vs Aliens... I can't help but laugh. It just seems so ridiculous!

Nate Wilson said...

Wow, there are some good movies coming out this month. (Also some unnecessary ones, such as the latest Michael Bay-Shia LeBouf collaboration.)

Alas, other than Potter, I probably won't be seeing any of them until they're released on DVD...

Budd said...

I think I need to get a part time job at the theater so i can see movies for free.

The Old Silly said...

Captain America for sure. I'm an old comic super hero buff and love the movies (usually) - Spidey is still my fave conversion from rag to screen though.

Luanne G. Smith said...

The trailer for Cowboys and Aliens is pretty good. I wanna see it.

Tyrean Martinson said...

Harry Potter, Captain America, and Maybe Cowboys Vs. Aliens - just because the title makes me laugh, although I may reserve that one for Netflix.

My husband will want to see Transformers but last time during the second movie, I fell asleep during the last 30 minutes of the movie where action scene blended into action scene - I like sword fights better, and it was a midnight showing - hopefully this one is better.

Bossy Betty said...

Alex--You are my cool friend. Thanks to you I sound like I know what I am talking about when it comes to movies.

Emily White said...

All these movies look awesome! I just wish they weren't all coming out in the same month. :( Now I must pick which one I will see. Probably Harry Potter! :)

Anonymous said...

I'm looking forward to Captain America and Cowboys -- and to Harry Potter finally being over. Is that sacrilege?

Jeff Beesler said...

So many movies, so little time. Tell ya what. Just wake me up when CassaStar the movie is released!

Suze said...

'Captain America' looks tempting. Only I haven't been watching blockbusters in the last eight years (think an early Spiderman installment around the time 'Napoleon Dynamite' came out) so I may not be prepared for the gore.

Christopher Hudson said...

I'll probably see most of these ... but Cowboys and Aliens ... I'll be in line for that.

Tina said...

We don't GO to movies much, too expensive. However, we watch probably 5 movies a week. The one that will take me to the theater, though, is Harry #7.P2 Gotta watch the previous one first though...I'm behind. Despicable for a Harry fan like me...
Cowboys and Aliens is a new concept. I like new. Hollywood is too mad-libs for me.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Teresa, might not be first, but I'm there!

Justine, let's hear it for big fighting machines!

Li, sorry, thought maybe I'd prompt people to start doing their Christmas shopping. Not me of course!

Kitty, I do want to see that one.

Sarah, hope you can fit it in.

Matthew, I imagine that gets expensive.

Jeremy, mind turned off is the key.

Mary, it's a funny line. Hope the rest of the movie is as funny.

Heather, I think they are just banking on special effects for Transformers, but those are some big names to omit.

Bryce, happy birthday!!

Karen, it will be the most unusual western he's ever seen.

Patricia, it's supposed to be better than the second one, and nothing beats giant robots on the big screen.

Budd, that's always an idea.

Tyrean, it's supposed to be better.

Betty, stick with me - I'll keep you informed.

Milo, no - I share your sentiment.

Jeffrey, I'd wake the whole world for that!

TS Hendrik said...

I've heard that the new Transformers is better than the last one but still bad.

I'm all about attack the block. One of my friends saw an advance screening and couldn't stop talking about how great it is.

Charles Gramlich said...

Cowboys and Aliens is the only one on here that I really want to see strongly.

Christine Rains said...

I can't wait to see most of those movies. Cowboys & Aliens, oh yeah. That is an awesome concept.

RYC: I have a t-shirt proclaiming "I <3 my Geek!" I prefer a t-shirt and shorts. Shining armor sounds like something the knight will make his lady polish later.

Steven W said...

Um ... I think I'll see all of those! wow, I need to pay more attention to what's "Coming Soon." The only one I knew about was Potter.

Your mini reviews are priceless, like the Daniel-Craig-stealing-Rachel-Weisz comment. :)

Laila Knight said...

Oh, Transformers is in 3D this time...awesome! I've watched all the Harry Potter movies at the theater so far...so will not miss this one. Agreed that he does too much running. It always bugged me that his power was just a reflexion of Voltemort's. Love superhero movies and alien movies. There's a few there for Netflix. :) Thanks for the info.

alexia said...

Thanks for the lineup (and snarky comments)! I will prob see Transformers this weekend.

Summer Ross said...

The avenger and HP is what I want to see. Last night manly man and I went to see the new x-men movie- first class. I was a bit disappointed. There were things that didn't quite add up.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

TS, I'm excited about that one.

Charles, it tops my list!

Christine, love your geek!

Steven, I'll keep you informed.

Jennie, I'm jealous.

Lydia, he did though!

Laila, hoping for less running and more fighting.

Alexia, I snark on command.

Summer, like the big differences between the two Mystiques?

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

I really can't believe you didn't see Transformers at midnight last night. My children are going to see it all together tonight. Pretty cool, the four of them hanging out together instead of going with friends. They invited me but I know the theater will be packed so I'll wait until after the weekend. Can't wait to see Captain America.

Unknown said...

Definitely hitting Transformers and HP. Transformers filmed all over Chicago and they blow up the building where I used to work at I job I hate so I am gleefully awaiting Saturday. Cowboys and Aliens looks good, too. Not much for Captain America as I never got into him and Chris Evans does not appeal to me. Especially in that weird CGI body. He's not that small and he's not that large either.

Ivy Bliss said...

Hey Alex! I'm back...
I came over to ask how your book is selling. But was immediately sidetracked, because I am desperately waiting for Harry Potter...it can't be the end, can it? Alas...we do know how it ends, but that won't prevent me from going and crying. :)
I also wanted to let you know that I've started an additional blog and invite you to follow. You've always had such great words for me and I appreciate them so much.

Wanna see Harry, Horrible Bosses and Aliens v. Cowboys. The husband unit will have to watch Transformers by himself. lol

Lynda R Young as Elle Cardy said...

Cowboys and Aliens sounds like fun. I'm not in a hurry to see Harry since I wanted to kill myself after watching Part 1. Looking forward to transformers.

Rusty Carl said...

I saw that trailer for Attack the Block and thought it might be a Super 8 kind of film, but with more f-bombs.

I usually am so stoked for summer movies but I haven't felt the love so far this year. I'll see at least Transformers, Harry Potter and Captain America though.

Arlee Bird said...

It's about time they're making a film version of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, but I'm not sure how the Transformers fit into it.

I'm definitely looking forward to Cowboys vs. Aliens.

I'll have to see Cowboys and Aliens because Daniel Craig's in it. :)

Helen Ginger said...

Okay, I'd like to see Harry Potter, Captain America and Ironclad. This past weekend, we went to see X-Men. Really liked it, even though I didn't read the comic books.

Liz P said...

Hard to believe the last HP movie is weeks away. Really hoping the Hogwarts battle is as epic as I picture it.

I hadn't heard of Horrible Bosses but sounds like it could be funny. Maybe.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Susan, I wasn't that excited - and I'm way too old to do stuff like that! Glad your kids are enjoying some quality time together.

Melissa, you will enjoy seeing it destroyed, I promise!

Hey Ivy! Good to hear from you.

Mary, at least you're willing to let him go.

Lynda, that's sad - why?

Rusty, I'm excited for any opportunity to go to the movies.

Lee, we need to talk...

Ciara, you mean the Daniel Craig who took Rachel from us?

Chuck said...

I will probably see all of them but Potter...just don't care that much. Some in theatres and some will wait til DVD. Cowboys and Aliens woould top my list. Hopefully Ironclad will be available somewhere as I like the cast.

Thanks for the list Alex, now I can update my Netflix.

Powdered Toast Man said...

I get so excited about movies. I've known about these movies for some time but just reading about them gives me goosebumps. I'm going to wear my Optimus Prime pajamas to Transformers. Woohoo!!

Nancy Thompson said...

Can't wait for Horrible Bosses. I've had my share. Now I'm my own horrible boss and I can't even quit.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Chuck, I just have to see how the Potter thing ends...

PTM, have someone take photos. Er, maybe not.

Nancy, that's funny!

Copyboy said...

I might have to catch that bosses one. Sounds pretty funny. Though CA IS what I'm really psyched for!!!

Oh I want to watch all of those movies.. just got to wait till they come out in Australia first:(

Cowboys and Aliens looks too awesome.

Anonymous said...

The Potter poster looks so creepy...we just took my 4 yr old to see Cars 2 and he was literally sitting on the edge of his seat the first hour. So funny! The grown-ups of the crowd were disappointed, though, that Lightning wasn't really the main character!? Thanks for the reviews!

Okay, Captain America is a total YES because I am a loyal Marvel Universe fan.

Harry Potter because I totally love the movies. Especially Ron's faces of absolute confusion.

Cowboys and Aliens...I'll wait for your review.

Horrible Bosses, this is news to me but I love Jason Bateman so probably.

Alex - Hope you like TRANSFORMERS. As for COWBOYS AND ALIENS - so, so excited!!!

RaShelle Workman said...

Oh, and Powdered Toast Man, I'm wearing my Transformers pj's to see the movie, too. Twinners!!! =D

M.J. Fifield said...

I LOVE that line in Horrible Bosses about the Prius and not winning a lot.

I'm also laughing pretty hard about critics complaining about a lack of character development in Transformers 3.

Cowboys and Aliens looks awesome but this month I am pretty much all about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I've had my tickets to a midnight showing for a couple of weeks now. And, seriously, if I thought the theater would let me, I'd go get in line now.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Copyboy, Cowboys and Aliens is my big pick for the month!

Scarlett, I'd heard Cars II was more for kids.

Raquel, I just wish DC could get their act together as well as Marvel.

RaShelle, I definitely want pictures of that!!

MJ, it's a movie based on TOYS - and they want character development? Really?

Jules said...

Transformers and Captain America, are my first choices followed by the cowboy/alien movie. Hope I don't have to wait too long to see them. :)

Elizabeth Spann Craig said...

Thanks for the preview! I'm looking forward to Harry Potter. :) I'm a little worried it might be too scary for the 9 year old, though...

Unknown said...

I like the look of Cowboys and Aliens. Probably won't come here for another couple of months, so I'll hold my breath.

BTW - Byron's a pretty cool guy (well he is at the moment anyway). Whoops! Feel a twitter coming on...

N. R. Williams said...

The preview shows Harry going to meet V. head on, which is in the book. I will see it cause I'm a junkie. The others, probably not. My movie money is tight.

I've had this idea for awhile and the cowboy alien thing brought it to my mind. Wouldn't it be cool is a bunch of black hawk helicopters entered a time vortex and surprised Julius Cesar in Gaul? Of course they would be playing that famous opera song.

Jolene, good luck with her first theater venture.

Sue, could be very funny!

Lynda R Young as Elle Cardy said...

lol, you asked me why I wanted to kill myself while watching Deathly Hollows Part 1? Because it was so BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was painful and dark and miserable and depressing and the movie could have been cut to an hour at most and not lost anything (my apologies to any HP fans out there)

Horrible Bosses sounds like a good one to me. Thanks for all of the reviews. Julie

I'm torn on most of these movies....
Transformers sounds a bit fun, but I have a real problem with Michael Bay (he treated Megan Fox so horribly).

Then there's Horrible Bosses. I love Charlie Day and think the concept is funny, but can't stand Jennifer Aniston.

what's a guy to do???

Yessssss! This is promising to be one of the best movie summers in a while!

Transformers - It's scary when critics expect character development in these movies. That's not the point. Gheezsh!
Ironclad - I WILL find this movie! I WILL find this movie.
Harry Potter - Duh.
Horrible Bosses - Only because I'm sure I can top whatever ***holes they use as criteria!
Cowboys and Aliens - Another duh. Who wouldn't want to see cowboys and indians fighting against aliens. It's the perfect scenario.

Love your mini-reviews, Alex, and just hate that I'm a late-comer to your blog. You rock! [As long as we share the same opinions..... 8-) ]

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Andrew, I think Megan Fox did herself in.

Sharlene, hope you find it!!!

Harry Potter, Cowboys & Aliens and Captain America are on my list.

Harry Potter - Must see for me as I have seen all the films before. Not sure if it was a wise decision to go for 3D...

Cowboys & Alines - one of my favorite actors returns to the big screen: Harrison Ford

Captain America - I liked the trailers shown so far ...

TerryLynnJohnson said...

Hubby is patiently waiting for Cowboys. Think we're also going to see Transformers. But so many to chose from! I'd also like to see Horrible Bosses and Brides Maids. I still haven't seen Xmen or Pirates yet!!!! All the good ones come out at once when the weather is nice!! Some good choices in Feb/March and early April would be way better!
