THOR Review!

This movie is all about fun! It’s neither dour nor heavy, and the comedic elements kept it light. (Coffee cup smashing scene was a favorite of mine.) Taking Thor out of Asgard and placing him on Earth as a “God out of water” was a great premise.

Chris Hemsworth was born to play Thor. He’s perfect for the role, and this movie is a solid setup for a possible franchise – not to mention the upcoming Avengers flick.

There are minor issues, like the relationship between Thor and his brother, Loki. The relationship with Natalie Portman’s Jane seemed a bit rushed as well.

But you don’t go to see a movie like Thor for serious character development – you go for the amazing action scenes, the great special effects, and the fun! It’s in both 2D and 3D, but since the 3D was added after shooting, I opted for the 2D and don’t feel I missed anything. I’m also a sucker for Norse mythology, so I really enjoyed that aspect. And you have to watch for the Hawkeye cameo! They are really prepping for the Avengers movie…

Not perfect, but a hell of a lot of fun!

did you stay for the spoiler at the end... way at the end? the ladies swooned over mr. buff.

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Yep, it never took itself too seriously, nor it was cheesy. Very well balanced! Loved the visuals, Natalie and Thor himself, but it just wasn't as spectacular and exciting as I expected it to be. Nice review, dude :)

Sue, thanks for hosting me! And I've always dug Norse and viking tales.

Lynda, my wife thought so, too.

Different Avengers, although I've seen that one as well, Kitty.

Jeremy, I guess we missed that.

Nebular, I probably liked it more than you did, but it was pretty much what I expected. And I dig Norse stuff.

Sarah, glad you caught that!

Jules, the only Avenger that hasn't received movie treatment yet is Hawkeye, but they've certainly prepped us for it.

Thanks for the review. I love Norse mythology too and will see the show today or tomorrow. And I met Defeenah during the A to Z Challenge. She's is certainly a delightful blogger.

Looks like fun Alex- I want to see it on the big screen too. Not a fan of 3D, so I'm glad they have it in 2D :)

I'm not too eager to see Thor, but I wasn't eager to see Iron Man either, and boy, was I wrong about that! It freakin' ROCKED!

Thor sounds like a fun summer movie (and it's definitely starting to feel like summer here!)

Arlee Bird said...

So far none of the Thor reviews I've heard praised it for acting or story line, but they all said it was pure silly fun. I don't know whether I'll see when it comes to DVD or not, but then again I don't go to amusement parks anymore either.

I saw THOR on Friday night, and I have to say, I was rather into it. It's not a genre or movie I would choose to see on my own, but I wasn't mad at my friends who chose it, either. I liked that, despite being fantasy, it incorporated reality as well through the scenes in New Mexico. And it was modern, as the mortals had phones, iPods, and referenced facebook.

Aleta said...

My brother went to this movie and came back saying it was "sucky." I haven't seen it yet, so I was happy to read your review and get more feedback on the movie.

Kelly Polark said...

My 6yo son wants to see Thor. I think it's PG13 right? So probably too violent for a 6 year old?.
Luckily, he commented, "That's okay, I'll see it when I'm a sixth grader..."

Saumya said...

Ahh congrats on the awards! I really really really need to see Thor. My weekend was filled with Something Borrowed, haha. Love your review of Thor and you brought up a great point: we don't see it for the character development but more for the thrill and action.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Thank you, Karen!

Stephen, Dafeenah is wonderful.

Betty, I try not to let them die...

Will, then go man, go!

Lee, you need to get out more.

Nicki, I will!

Aleta, I've seen far worse superhero movies. Spiderman III comes to mind...

kelly, it might be a little intense for him.

Saumya, that's right!

Thanks a bunch for the review. It sounds like great fun. I've read such negative things about the film from people who expected profundity from director Kenneth Branagh. But sometimes even Shakespearean actors just wanna have fun.

I went and saw Thor as a mother's day treat yesterday and i have to agree with you on most aspects- though I found Jane hitting him with the car very humorous, the coffee cup part was still good. Did you watch after the credits? If you didn't you should have- a interesting little scene with Loki.

Sheila Siler said...

My hubby took me to see Thor yesterday for Mother's Day. I loved it. I don't think it deserved a PG-13 rating at all. PG would have been fine. It was worth the money (we went to a daytime showing) to see it on the big screen. I LOVED that there was so extremely clean. I agree the storyline wasn't huge, and it felt very much that it was a "set-up" movie - preparing me for future stories. I would recommend that any age could watch it. LOVED IT!

Patricia Stoltey said...

Thank you, thank you, thank you...Alex you're awesome. And did I say thank you?

Definitely going to catch that in theaters, I think. It did so well this weekend, I was mostly in it for sexy guy, but this review made me even more excited! (my movie standards are...low. Hot guy doing sexy things, I'm in)

M Pax, I caught one minute of that and turned away as fast as possible. Wow, that was bad!!!

Summer, my wife thought Jane hitting him with the car was funny. And no, we didn't see the very end!

Sheila, glad you enjoyed it!

Patricia, you are welcome.

Colene, you'll enjoy it then!

I've been thinking about seeing this flick...then again, by the time I actually decide to go to the theater, the movie is long gone, LOL!

Rusty Carl said...

Thor was great, I enjoyed than any other movies I've seen in the past few months. I bought 2D ticket for the same reason you did - but the projector broke and I got a free upgrade to 3D. I told them I didn't want 3D and I just got this ridiculous look, like the guy didn't understand the words.

After I saw last years Clash of the Titans in 3D I swore I'd never watch a converted movie again. But I relented when I had no other options. I thought they did an infinitely better job on this one. I'd almost recommend it in 3D now.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Raquel, it's equal parts of both.

Li - you got it!

Milo, I'm a DC guy, so Thor was never a favorite, but it was a cool movie.

LB, you need to get out... faster!

Rusty, I was hesitant to plunk down and extra four bucks for 3D that might not be great - and on a film I wasn't dying to see in 3D. But then again, I did see Rio in 3D. But that was my wife's decision!

Eric said...

Yeah, Thor was phenomenal. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and I didn't even notice the little bits you mention about character development. Guess I was just enjoying the ride too much. I also didn't notice the Hawkeye cameo, though now that you say it, I remember who you are talking about. That is totally cool.

RaShelle Workman said...

Hi Alex - I went and saw Thor on the big IMAX screen in 3D (my first time ever seeing anything on that type of screen - the expense is crazy-talk) and I have to say - IT WAS AWESOME!!! Loved it. I agree with the rushing of the characters development, but I had a blast.

Unknown said...

Thor was fun!

I felt like they rushed Thor's trip to Earth too much. I mean, he was there for, like, two days? Um, I don't think so.

The coffee cup scene was definitely hilarious, though, and I did find the movie lots of fun overall.

Unknown said...

I saw Thor and am working on my own review. I loved it! And you are so right, Hemsworth was definitely born to play the god of Thunder.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Maurice, one of those gasps came from my wife.

Eric, as soon as I saw him, I knew it was Hawkeye!

RaShelle, envious you saw it at the IMAX!

Ella, that's cool!!

Melissa, yes he was!

I've been hesitant to see Thor with the recent overload of Natalie Portman and re-makes of comic books over the past couple of years. Though- who doesn't love a good action movie? All the reviews I've seen have given it the same type that you have; I think I'm going to have to check it out now.

okay, this is the first review I've seen of Thor and I'm surprised! I sort of expected it to suck a little. Sounds like one to go see! Drat - too many movies lately!

Cool! I love all the comic book movies. I'm gonna go see it.

As a Scandinavian woman, I'm a sucker for Norse mythology and plan to see this. Have you seen Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (might have butchered that title)? Highly entertaining, and the depiction of hell was quite chilling. Besides, what's not to love about Uma Thurman as Medusa and Pierce Brosnan as a Centaur? Great, cheesy stuff.

I think the theory of the 9 kingdoms in tree format was inspired. To be honest though they could have made the battles scenes longer because they all seemed a bit short and snappy. Still a great film and I'll definitely get dvd/bluray

So I didn't finish Thor...I watched Xmen: First Class just before it and LOVED it and then when I put Thor on I just wasn't as drawn in. I didn't think it was bad, just didn't have the same pacing or character development. I fell asleep and took it back to Blockbuster the next day without finishing it, but I think I would like to give it another chance. I am so excited for Avengers!
