Star Wars: The Last Jedi Movie Review

Just amazing!
I’m still trying to digest everything I saw. At two and a half hours, they pack in a lot.
All of the action sequences are amazing. There are so many that would be the grand finale in most films.
This movie had a lot of surprises. There were directions they could’ve gone but didn’t, and I appreciated that. There were also some reveals and yet more mysteries layered into the mix.v Everyone is great in their role. (It is bittersweet to see Carrie Fisher in her last role though.) The characters are fleshed out even more, revealing their true nature. There are a lot of things addressed that I can’t touch on without spoilers, but safe to say the movie has depth.
The movie also has some great touches of humor. BB8, Fin, the porgs – they all have their moments.
Special effects? Amazing. And I appreciate that Yoda was a puppet again and not the cheesy animated thing from the trilogy we all want to forget.
Rogue One and Empire Strikes Back still edge it out, but this was a big favorite of the Star Wars movies.
Highly recommended!

And did you catch this Tweet from GeekdomHouse?

Help Geekdom House create a no-kill shelter for all the porgs purchased as Christmas presents and discarded.

Psych: The Movie

Shawn and Gus are back and it’s like they never left.
It’s three years later and everyone is now in SanFrancisco. Shawn and Juliet are living together, Shawn and Gus have a new office fashioned after the Chinese pawn shop in Gremlins, and Juliet has a stalker.
Everyone is back and it’s more hilarious than ever.
Timothy Omundson (Lassie) suffered a stroke just before filming began and the script was rewritten. He is in one small scene though.
The ending is for the fans. That’s all I’ll say.
If you are a fan, then you will delight in this reunion. And clamor for more!
Highly recommended.

(Did you hear about Pluto? That’s messed up.)

Alita: Battle Angel

A live action of this Japanese anime has been in the works for years. Directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron, it’s due out next year. And it looks really good:

For comparison, here is the Japanese anime version which came out around twenty-five years ago. This was my first exposure to Alita and remains one of my favorite anime. It’s only an hour and two stories in one film, but it was well done. This is the entire movie, but you can watch a minute of it to get a feel for the film’s style. I think the live action one will stay true to the feel of the story.

This month is all about Christmas music. I couldn’t find a traditional song I really dug, so I picked something different. I selected one that most people are familiar with – Trans Siberian Orchestra’s Wizards in Winter. Plus, this is the video with the house Christmas lights all in sync.

Have you seen the new Star Wars film yet? Giving anyone a porg for Christmas? Did you watch the Psych special? Excited about Alita? What Christmas music movies you?

Mini-Alex would like to wish everyone a blessed Christmas and Happy New Year!
I’ll be offline December 22 through January 2, enjoying the holiday season. (I will check in on comments, Twitter, and emails though. And finally catching the wide release of The Shape of Water.) See you January 3 for the IWSG post and announcement of the anthology contest winners.

I want a porg for Christmas! They were adorable. I thought the movie was good, but not great, actually. I liked The Force Awakens more. Still way better than the prequels, though.
I didn't know about Chrys' blogfest. I'll have to check it out!
Have a great Christmas!

Now I'm really looking forward to seeing the new Star Wars movie. Sounds like some interesting twists to look forward to. Wishing you and your family a joyous Christmas and Happy New Year.

They can now sell more toys. How long before they are hated as much as the ewoks? lol Another win indeed though. The Psych movie was great. Hopefully they get to make more. Enjoy the blog break and hopefully a great Christmas is had at your pad!

Sounds like a Star Wars movie to get excited about!

Interesting that Hollywood is picking up an anime--sounds like a great concept.

Merry Christmas!

Hi, Alex!

Porgs make great stocking stuffers. Thanks for the review of The Last Jedi. I love it when a movie is stacked with epic scenes that would be reserved for the culmination of lesser films. I had no idea that Shawn & Gus are back in a new movie. It's a shame about the Lassie actor suffering a minor stroke and having limited involvement. That's a flick I want to see!

I never tire of listening to the Trans Siberian Orchestra. Thanks for posting that rousing number.

Have a fine week, good buddy Alex!

The entire family is a fan of The Psyche Series, but I can't believe we came in halfway, so we didn't watch it and looking forward to watching it on demand. I've also heard the new Star Wars movie wasn't their favorite, but I can't wait to see it.

I love so many Christmas songs I could never pick just one. Enjoy your Christmas break. Have a Blessed Christmas!!!

Good Morning Alex!

I have Star Wars and Psych on my list to see. TSO is a great selection. I saw their show 2 yrs ago just phenomenal. My senses were on overload, such a joy to see, hear and feel.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas! May 2018 birth better dreams into the world.

Peace, light and love always!

Yeh for Tyrean!

Saw Wind River over the weekend - very good!

Have a wonderful Christmas, Alex! And Happy New Year! :)

Alex,

I'll be honest with you, I don't have any desire to see the latest installment of Star Wars. The last flick was such a disappointment and so I don't want to see this one if it costs me anything. Now...if it comes available on Netflix or Amazon Prime then I may consider taking a peek. I'm glad that you enjoyed the film, though. I think the original trilogy is hard act to follow.

TSO totally gets ya movin'! I like listening to their stuff a little for Christmas. It's definitely a nice change up from traditional carols. Thanks for sharing the dance floor with the 4M gals. Have very joyful & blessed Christmas, my friend!

Joylene Nowell Butler said...

Thanks for the new star war's review, Alex. It just popped up on FireTV and I decided to wait for reviews. Very disappointed in the new Blade Runner film. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Sarah, watching paint dry is better than the prequels.

Pat, I'll take another Psych movie anytime.

Shady, it was a shame, but I'm glad they were able to have one scene for him.

Madeline, I want to see that one.

Cathy, TSO does put one in the Christmas spirit.

I do very much want to see Star Wars, but we won't get a chance this week. I did get in a small binge session on Netflix and watched One Punch Man. Hilarious! Have a happy Christmas and a fantastic new year. :)

My only solid opinion of Last Jedi(man! you can't just say "Jedi" anymore and have people know what movie you mean!) is that it's magnitudes better than Force Awakens.

We're going to have to catch Psych soon. I didn't realize it was "out."

Patricia Stoltey said...

I have never heard of a porg before. Enlightenment is one of many reasons I follow your blog, Alex. :D

I hope you have a wonderful Christmas holiday and a beautiful and happy new year.

Thanks for the review, Alex! I haven't seen Star Wars yet, but I will soon.

Star Wars has just gone to the top of my must-see list, it sounds amazing. I enjoyed finding out more about you and your books at Carter Novels, thanks for the link.
I love traditional Christmas carols and don’t even mind when my local supermarket starts playing them in October! Other than that, my all-time favourite Christmas song is Fairytale of New York with the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl.
Enjoy your break, have a Happy Christmas and the best New Year.

The movie was great, although watching Leia floating around like Mary Poppins was a bit surreal. And they pulled out all the stops. I thought the movie was over at one point, and then they had another big battle. It'll take multiple viewings to pick up on all the stuff in this movie.

John Wiswell said...

Oh wow, I used to love Psych! I'll have to check out the movie just for nostalgia's sake.

I'm still on the fence regarding going to the theater or wait for Last Jedi to come out on PPV. Your review might push me off the fence and into the theater.

we really liked Last Jedi, but I could have edited out 30 minutes to make it even tighter. Loved light saber stuff. All good acting and plot lines. Very satisfying film.
My fave Christmas movie is Love Actually. I can listen to that soundtrack any time of the year.
Merry Christmas to mini-Alex, you, and your wife. Enjoy the season.

Ivy, you and Tim have a great time.

Andrew, it was on last week.

Tyrean, that's cool!

Barbara, thanks for checking out my page. And I wonder what that song would sound like if it were porgs singing instead of Pogues?

Ken, I know! I thought it was wrapping up as well, but we still had a lot more.

Huntress, fall off the fence and go see it.

Joanne, it was a really long film.

Carrie-Anne said...

Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!

I've always loved Simon and Garfunkel's "Seven o'Clock News/Silent Night" (whose ending always gives me chills), Stevie Wonder's "Someday at Christmas," John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)," and the version of "Stille Nacht" from the 2005 film Joyeux Noël (about the 1914 Christmas Truce).

Glad you enjoyed The Last Jedi. I'm more apt to watch a Star Trek film over a Star Wars film but will give it a tryy. Will wait until it cones out on DVD most likely.
And I've heard for years about a possible live film adaptation on the anime Akira. It's the anime, along with Vampire Hunter D, that me a fan of Japanese anime. Still unsure whether to hate the idea or be excited about it. What if it becomes another Aeon Flux or Ghost in the Shell?

Thanks for not giving any spoilers about The Last Jedi -- I've been avoiding most reviews because of that problem. I'm glad you enjoyed and I expect I will too. Trouble is, this is the time of year when there are so many great flicks thanks to the piling-on for Oscar nods.

Star Wars was awesome. It was so much fun, which is a big part of what I look for in movies these days, and it was visually amazing. It just had some beautiful scenes and shots. My only complaint was that it was maybe a bit too long - I thought it was over at one point and then realized, wait, there's another half hour left?

The fanboy hate for it is ridiculous. They hate the special editions, they hated the prequels, they hated Force Awakens, now they hate this. What do you possibly want? Just to sit at home and watch Empire Strikes Back on VHS?

Battle Angel Alita weirds me out. Why oh why did they give her those giant stupid anime eyes?

TSO is amazing. One of the best stage shows around.

I've actually gotten to see both movies you reviewed! Absolutely loved Psych. It stayed true to the series and it felt like home when I sat down to watch it with my husband. Had lots of fun at Star Wars too, and thought the porgs were adorable.

Lynda Dietz said...

My hubby and oldest son went to see The Last Jedi earlier this week and loved it. Number One Son said he feels it's the best Star Wars movie of all of them, given what is contained and what they were aiming for. I'll need to see it on the big screen. I'm pretty sure either of them would be willing to see it a second time if I ask.

I'm psyched about a Psych movie! That show and its combination of characters is a favorite in our house. I'm glad to hear it's solid.

Have an incredible, blessed Christmas and we'll see you after the holidays are a memory. Take care, Alex.

Happy New Year!

I did go see Star Wars and, well, like The Force Awakens, it was a good, alternate universe fanfiction. The young actors are superb and it was really good to see Luke and Leia together again. And yes, I did tear up a couple of times during Carrie Fisher's scenes. And the porgs? Please? I'll adopt them all!!

Psche: The Movie was fantastic! We laughed so hard. As soon as it's on DVD, it's coming home with me. Even if just to hear Shawn and Gus' new "Suck it" song.

And if The Shape of Water was showing anywhere near me, I'd be there in a heartbeat. It looks fantastic!

Have a wonderful New Year and, yes, I'll see you Wednesday for IWSG :D
