Olympic Torch Relay, Ninja News, Favorite TV Shows, and TV Trivia!

Nicole at Write Me a World has been hosting an Olympic Torch Relay, with daily posts inspired by the Olympics. And now, it is my turn! Visit Nicole’s SITE to find out why I think writing should be an Olympic sport.

Speaking of the Olympics…

Highlight for me was watching the USA win Gold and Silver in Women’s Beach Volleyball. Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings won their third Olympic Gold medal, solidifying their names in Olympic history.

And for the final match, all four women wore bikinis – joy!

Ninja News

EJ Wesley will be revealing the cover art for his book soon and needs your help! Check out his site for details.

MsHatch at Maine Words is holding a three year blogging anniversary giveaway!

Voting continues for Diane’s Supportive Blogger Extraordinaire Contest, Thanks DL and all the others who nominated me – you guys rock!

Favorite TV Shows

Yes, my childhood was spent in front of the TV. Recently with NetFlix, that addiction has continued into adulthood. Those of you who’ve avoided this addiction, I salute you! In the meantime, these are some of my favorite shows, in no particular order:

Present:
Psych
Burn Notice
Leverage
Breaking Bad
The Glades
Sports Nation

Past:
Eureka
Firefly (curse you FOX!)
Stargate SG1
Stargate Atlantis
Star Trek Next Generation
Star Trek Deep Space Nine (my favorite Star Trek series)
Star Trek Voyager
Star Trek Enterprise
X-Files
Farscape
Yes, I tend to lean toward the science fiction shows!

TV Trivia

For those of you who struggle with the movie trivia…

1 – Burn Notice’s Bruce Campbell also stared in what western series?

2 – On Deep Space Nine, what do Rom and Quark call their mother?

3 – Who plays Jayne Cobb on the show Firefly?

4 – On the X-Files, what character did Mitch Pileggi’s play?

5 – On Psych, who plays Shawn Spencer’s dad?

(What, you were expecting questions about Glee or something? Be serious!)

Did you watch the final beach volleyball game? Ready for Monday’s reveal? Know the answers to the trivia questions? Seeing The Bourne Legacy this weekend? And what are some of your favorite TV shows?

Don’t forget to visit Nicole at Write Me a World

Excited to hear all about your blogfest. Many of these shows I am watching myself but sports are not my thing so I have not been following to much OL.

I too gawped at the lovely posteriors involved in beach volleyball.

Ahem.

But the Dressage was the best - the horses were such STARS!

Take care

Looking forward to the "reveal" on Monday! You've kept us hanging enough...

Volleyball rocked! It was great to see them end their careers on a high note.

Can't wait to see what you've cooked up for your next FEST! All in!

I am one with the TV.

1. Adventures of Briscoe County, Jr.? (sp?)
2.
3. Adam Baldwin
4. AD Skinner
5. Corbin Bernsen

Almost. Arggg!

Angela Brown said...

Sounds like big things to come so I'm excited for the reveal.

I enjoy many of the shows you listed for both present and past. Though, I've got nothing for the TV trivia. I seethe people but don't know much about names.

Mark Koopmans said...

Ireland won Gold in Women's boxing, which is pretty awesome.

(They don't do beach volleyball, as the sun doesn't come out long enough :)

George Beremov [Nebular] said...

Apart from The Walking Dead, American Horror Story and about dozen reality shows, I don't really watch TV that much. Or do I? LOL. :)

Excellent tv taste, although Next Gen is my favourite Star Trek series.

Looking forward to the reveal ...

Rusty Carl said...

1 - Bricso County Jr
2 - Moogie
3 - Crap... something Baldwin
4 - ??
5 - Morgan Bernstein

I didn't see the Volleyball match. I really hope to see Bourne this weekend but it's shaping up to be really jammed with things. I'll try hard to sneak away though.

Katie Dunn said...

In the list of TV you watch, the only four I have never watched are Leverage, Breaking Bad, The Glades, and Sports Nation. In fact, I'm currently rewatching DS9=)
I can answer some of your questions:
1) Brisco County Junior (sp?)
2) ??? Can't remember... I'll probably find out later today!
3) Adam Baldwin
4) Skinner
5) Corbin Bernsen

I put the blogfest date on my calendar. As for the volleyball, I think every man in America watches that Olympic sport. No judging here.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Kitty, that made me laugh!

Michelle, just a couple more days...

Heather, you got four!

Mark, I think our poor girls about froze to death at the Olympics.

Rusty, you got four right. Good job on the Moogie answer.

Kathleen, you got four. And thanks to NetFlix I've watched DS9 three times already.

Brinda, what can we say?

Heather Murphy said...

So happy for Misty and Kerri. Nice post on Nicole's blog. Looking forward to the big reveal on Monday!
Have a great weekend

Hmm, so you're a sci-fi fan? I love those shows too. I never missed an episode of Stargate (any of the series). Have a great weekend, Alex!

Anonymous said...

I have to confess, volleyball and beach volleyball are probably my least favorite Olympic sports (which has caused much pouting by me since NBC has shown Every Single Game in favor of some of the sports I do find more interesting, like FENCING). They are impressive athletes, though, I freely admit that!

I'm a Star Trek fan, too - just started re-watching The Next Generation via NetFlix (the first season is SO MUCH WORSE than what I remembered). For the trivia questions, I only know #4 - Adam Baldwin. Gotta catch up on DS9 and X-Files, I guess!

RaveAir said...

Hungary won 8 golden medal at London yet. I think it's a great achivement from a small country like where I am living. :)

I had a feeling you're a sci-fi fan. I loved the mentioned and cancelled or ended shows, but where is from your list the sci-fi series ever, the Battlestar Galactica? Frak! ;)

And where is the sci-fi series from the Present? Isn't there any good series? Shame on you Syfy!

Ciara said...

Looking forward to the blog fest reveal on Monday. Wait a second, did you say you had Netflix as a child? We didn't even have a VCR when I was little. Oh my, I'm feeling old now.

Bryan Russell said...

Looking forward to the new Bourne, though I probably won't get a chance to see it until it comes out on video. C'est la vie.

Rawknrobyn.blogspot.com said...

I suppose I wouldn't know any of the answers if it were about Glee either. Dancing with the Stars, maybe.

Cheers, Alex.

Next Generation was my favorite Star Trek series (besides the original, of course). After a patchy first season it quickly rose to greatness.

Tara Tyler said...

amazing!

my old brain is no good at trivia, i love google!
and looking forward to monday's reveal!

Laura Eno said...

I love Firefly and Star Trek(s)!

Moogie
Adam Baldwin

Those are the only two I know but that's two more than I usually know on your quizes!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Thanks, Heather.

Clarissa, Stargate was awesome.

Louise, yeah those first two seasons are cheesy. The Olympic app for the iPad is a great way to see the other events if you're missing them.

Zoltan, that's right - shame on SyFy! I liked the first couple seasons of Battlestar, but it got too bogged down after that.

Ciara, no! Just that NetFlix keeps me going now.

AJ, the first two seasons are hard to watch now.

Sherry Ellis said...

I don't watch much TV, but my husband has been watching Breaking Bad. I'm starting to get into it. I think Walter, the chemistry teacher, is an intriguing character.

Rachel Schieffelbein said...

I love Psych! Shawn's dad is Corbin Bernsen, (who I hope is going to be okay on that show, by the way!) But I don't know any of the other answers.

Miranda Hardy said...

I can never play in your trivia. Then again, I don't watch a lot of TV shows. Actually, none at the moment. lol

StratPlayerCJF said...

I'll be heading over to Nicole's blog to check out your Olympics post!

Yes, one of the best things about NetFlix is the TV shows. Right now we're working our way through the BBC's Merlin... ;^)

Let's try the TV trivia:

1. I still think of Bruce Campbell mainly as Ash from the Evil Dead series, but I do remember a sci-fi/western I never really got into called "Brisco," or something like that I think.

2. Uh, although I loved ST:TOS and ST:TNG, I was never a big DS9 guy, so no idea -- maybe"Mommykins?"

3. An easy one: Adam Baldwin. And I agree: CURSE YOU FOX!!!

4. He was FBI director Skinner, wasn't he?

5. No clue -- never seen it.

Marta Szemik said...

I loved to watch Friends. X-Files was a must every Sunday night so I think the answer to your question is Skinner if I remember correctly. I must say I've been a loyal fan of a Soap Opera for the past 20 years (Days of our Lives). Intrigued about Sept 17th, but wont be able to sign up until the end of next week :)

Bossy Betty said...

Nicole said...

Thanks again for the awesome post, Alex! Beach volleyball was pretty epic. :) This year's Olympics have definitely sucked me in.

Julie Dao said...

Yeah team USA!!! I keep hearing about Firefly but never had a chance to watch it.

Roland D. Yeomans said...

Bruce Campbell was Brisco County Jr. (Loved his ARMY OF DARKNESS.) Like you, I hated FOX for cancelling FIREFLY. Still, Adam got a long gig in CHUCK. Like Siv, I don't watch sports. Still what male could resist Beach Volleyball!

Madeline Mora-Summonte said...

Every time I see Wil Wheaton on The Big Bang Theory I laugh and feel old at the same time - I remember Next Generation.

Favorite TV show at the present? The Walking Dead. Can't wait for Season 3...

so i sit thinking about my favorite shows from new to old and i thought i would share the one that changed my love for science fiction... with the made for tv movie. "V" the nbc's early 1980's movie series, along with cbs's "the hulk". my eyes wide open, my thoughts new and my future of television watching changed forever.

currently i don't have anything to tie me to the tv, last show was "chuck" this year i am free from it's schedule. it's like going outside for the first time in 10 years.

jeremy

i loved brisco county jr, too bad that fox didn't see it that way.

Sangu Mandanna said...

Oh wow, can you imagine writing as an Olympic sport? It would be amazing. (Also probably hideously boring to watch. But amazing.)

Jemi Fraser said...

Strangely all of the shows you listed in your past are favourites of mine, but I've never seen an episode of any of your present ones... I don't know if some of them are shown here, but I'm going to have to check them out!

Looking forward to your blogfest announcement! You make me feel old with the whole growing up with netflix thing- I guess bcuz we didn't have stuff like that growing up. We did get Atari in the 70's though. :)
Tho I don't always know the answers to your trivia, I do learn from them when you put the answers up. :) Also I did laugh at the Glee mention!

Juliana Haygert said...

Oooo, mysterious Alex, can't wait to see what you have in store for us lol
I'm very eclectic so my favorites tv shows are all over ...
Like a good girlie, I like The Vampire Diaries. As a former ballerina, I like Bunheads. There's also Falling Skies, Game of Thrones, Nikita, LEGEND OF KORRA, and waiting for the next and last season of Spartacus ...

Carol Kilgore said...

Are you suffering Beach Volleyball withdrawal?

I loved X-Files!

Nate Wilson said...

Just for fun, I shall answer all your questions: Some of it. Yes! Four of them: Brisco, Baldwin, Skinner, Bernsen. No. Current: Psych, Downtown, Community, Avatar; Past: Firefly, Flying Circus, Invader Zim, Police Squad!

Suze said...

'What, you were expecting questions about Glee or something? Be serious!'

HA!

X-Files was spine-tingling. The one episode with the guy who ate people's livers to stay alive for over a century used to scare me when I ran on a treadmill in front of a vent. Sheesh.

Elizabeth Spann Craig said...

I'm like Kitty--I enjoyed watching the horses!

Curious about the Bourne movie, but today's paper gave it a poor review...sigh.

Maurice Mitchell said...

You're a shoe-in for the contest Alex! Great questions.
1. Brisco County Jr.
2. Don't know
3. Baldwin
4. Can't remember! I know he was the director. Here's a bonus trivia question: Which horror movie starred Mitch Pileggi?
5. Don't know

@Congrats MsHatch!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Tara, you are!

Laura, you did good then!

Sherry, the writer of that show was a writer on the X-Files - part of the reason I enjoy it.

Rachel, Psych is awesome!!

Chris, you got three and four. Yes, curses to FOX. And you were on the right track for the first one.

Marta, you are correct.

Betty, rather obvious, isn't it?

Julie, you must watch!

Roland, you are correct. And no man can resist women's beach volleyball, which is why my wife was cool with it. (I think it amused her.)

Madeline, he was on Eureka as well.

Jeremy, another great series bites the dust...

Sangu, I can think of a couple real sports that would be more boring though.

Jemi, just not a lot of great science fiction shows on at the moment.

Gossip, I guess I need to reword that NetFlix thing...

Carol - yes!

Nate - what you said!

Suze, I remember that episode.

Unspoken said...

"And for the final match, all four women wore bikinis – joy!" Made me laugh!

I see you have not listed any of my faves: Girls, Sex in the City, Dexter, True Blood... I can't even pick a theme these fall under. Yup, sci-fi rules your worlds.

Nancy Thompson said...

No, those bikinis make me uncomfortable. Ready for Monday's reveal. Just hope it's something I can handle. I don't know the answers to ANY of those questions & only watched The X Files. I am SO looking forward to The Bourne Legacy! Just hope I can persuade the hubs to take me to see it. And ugh, I could never pick a favorite TV show. I love too many of them. But the first season of Spartacus really rung my bell.

jaybird said...

Nice list of tv shows. I have to admit your list of what you used to watch is quite similar to mine.

Although, my parents had to nip The X-files on me, cause I started to have too many nightmares.

mshatch said...

Thanks for the shout out, Alex! As for your trivia contest, ach! I should know the answers to all of these since I was/am an avid fan. Sadly, think I only know the answer to

#5 - Corbin Bernstein.

I'm guessing here #4 - Director Skinner?

#3 - a Baldwin?

#2 - no idea, but probably something derogatory!

and #1 _ I should know this since I love Burn Notice AND Bruce Campbell but, no clue dammit.

Unknown said...

Yes I watched the beach volleyball, I love Kerri and Misty.

DS9 ruled my Star Trek world!! I love that it was your fave ST show, too. Hell to the yeah! We have lots of similar tastes in shows I see.

MsHatch, you're welcome, and you got three of them.

Melissa, you're good! And DS9 rocked.

Thanks, DG.

Hi Alex .. missed the Beach Volley Ball - but congrats to the US for their golds. Loved the Cycling, the Horses, tennis and the road racing ... and generally seeing the Brits do well - and sadly a few fall to the wayside. Just getting to the Olympics .. they're a winner in my mind.

Tv shows .. complete blank in my life .. cheers for now - Hilary

Andrew Leon said...

Brisco County, Jr. is one of my favorite TV shows EVER. I own the series. I can't believe it's not on your list of past shows. It's, like, the original sci-fi western. So, yeah, it doesn't have space cowboys, but it's an awesome show!

And I just have to say, I don't understand the whole Breaking Bad thing. But, then, you can look back at my review for thoughts on it, if you want.

And, no, I'm not following the comments, today, so, if you want to cross swords with me about any of that, you'll have to email me.

Oh, and I voted.

Michael Offutt, Phantom Reader said...

I love Breaking Bad. I can't believe you'd want the Sword of Shannara to be made into a movie (comment on MS Hatch's blog). That movie is a point for point ripoff of the Fellowship of the Ring.

DMS said...

I am enjoying the Olympics and watched some of the beach volleyball- but not all of the matches. Yay USA. Watched a lot of diving yesterday!

The Ninja News is full of awesome information. Looking forward to EJ's cover reveal!

Fascinating to see your favortie shows. I haven't watched any of your present favorites- but most of your past ones I watched. I was big into the X-Files! I am a big fan of MASH, The Simpsons, Litte House on the Prairie and any show about space or nature on Discovery or National Geographic.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Justine, he just rocks in all his rolls!

Andrew, the list of past shows started getting out of control, so I stopped where I did. And thanks!

Michael, it's one of MY favorite books, and I even have a signed copy after meeting Terry Brooks in person. It inspired me to write, so I would very much like to see the characters come to life on the big screen.

DMS, I should've had M.A.S.H. in there, but the list was already really long...

Emily, women who are athletic are sexy.

Tonja said...

We watched an earlier round of beach volleyball. Awesome that they won. I spent my adolescence in front of the tv, mostly MTV and HBO. I would do better with 80's music video or bad 80's movies trivia.

What happened to Warehouse 13? It's terrible this season. Even my kids thought it was stupid. Ugh.

Leovi said...

Intelligent and fun option for similarities between athletes and writers.

Looking at your list of favorite TV shows, you and my fiance would have a LOT to discuss! If not for him I don't think I would have seen a single episode of any of those shows. (But I'll be honest, I have enjoyed a lot of them!)

Christine Rains said...

I can't wait to find out what your next blogfest is about! A lot of your past TV shows are the same as mine. I'm currently watching Falling Skies on DVD. It's intense. Loving it!

farawayeyes said...

UGH! TV trivia, I'm even worse at this than the movies. I must live in a cave. Actually we haven't had TV in a long time. My favorites as a child were all 'Oaters'. Roy Rogers is still my hero.

'The Olympics - a time when men take a sudden interest in Women's Beach Volleyball and women don't seem to care.' That's a quote from the boys at A Beer For The Shower, but it pretty much sums it up.

Happy Weekend and good luck on that most supportive3 blogger contest. While I have to admit the other two are great people and incredibly supportive - Alex, you the man.

Lisa, your husband is correct.

Now I watch Bones, Storage Wars, and Project Runway. I really need to get a better TV show line up.

Lauren said...

Ah! Ah! I know the answer to number 5 - Corbin Bensen. I'm afraid all of the other shows are ones I haven't watched.

I'm not really into sci-fi shows - I watched Doctor Who until David Tennatn left, and that's about it. Although the new show Awake looked fascinating. I just never caught it when it was on, and then of course it had to go and get cancelled. But Leverage and Psych are really great shows. And I'm kind of into the new one, Once Upon a Time, as well.

Not seeing Bourne this weekend, but I do want to see it very very soon.

Morgan, I try!

I love Eureka (is it canceled now?), Psych, Burn Notice, loved Firefly and X-Files. I've been watching the first episodes of each of these shows recently on Netflix, actually.

Ok, when you said you enjoyed the womens volley ball the most, I immediately knew it must have been a beach playing. And bikini's. Men.

I've seen most of the series on your list, but I pay little attention to TV, even when I really want to watch what is on. No netflix addiction for me - but I do buy movies and leave them on the shelf for months sometimes before getting around to watching them.

I've only seen Star trek enterprise and Voyager, XFiles and Farscape.

We only get to see some of the stuff here. Netflix and Hulu aren't allowed in India (you have to cheat with proxy servers which show US Isp or hidden Isp using web services, to watch on comps. End up paying twice; to Netflix and the by-passer with no guarantee of streaming quality).
We do get some good movies but not tv episodes through local flix services.

I keep missing out on the good stuff like men's gymnastics. But I didn't see the women's beach volleyball. They were fanfreakintastic.

Misty and Kerri... epic. I have to admit though, I don't know why anyone would want to dirve in the beach in a tiny bikini.

I missed lots of things in the last 2 weeks due to my mom's health issue(she is recovering now).

Would have definitely voted for you for the Supportive Blogger Extraordinaire Contest.

They're bringing out The Bourne Legacy?

It was like yesterday that one of the producers said there wouldn't do a fourth movie or they'd call it The Bourn Redundancy. :-/ Guess money talks more than class.

My TV is on until I go to bed because I live in a tiny hotel room, so it's either that or listen to the neighbors, but I don't really watch it as I spend most of my time writing.

I do love Nascar and watch not just the races, but all the other stuff. At one time I blogged about it regularly. I have a few comedies I like such as the Big Bang Theory, and I love game shows. In the 80s, I learned (better) English by watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

Olympics: Loved the male divers because of the small uniforms ... us women don't get a whole lot to look at otherwise! Men gets lots to look at and I think we are still unequal there.

It appears I'm just as bad at TV trivia. Favourite programmes for me include Star Trek (apart from the original series), The West Wing, Buffy, House, Firefly, Quantum Leap. Anything with really clever writing and good characterisation I suppose.

One of my first faves was a British children's programme called Press Gang - an absolute gem and far superior to today's kids TV because it doesn't patronise - I've got the box set and still watch it now.

Ah, thanks for allowing me to reminisce Alex.

I'm excited to find out what the blogfest theme will be!

Next Gen is also my fav Star Trek series, but I hold the others in high regard as well!

Unfortunately here in Oz the Olympics has been a dirty word and I am embarrassed by the comments our commentators have been sporting! It has been the blame game! I believe all of the sports personalities we sent have done their very best, why put them down! Sad, very sad indeed!

Medeia, the last two season aren't as good.

Leovi, that makes you very cool.

Jessica, I don't care the reason, just glad they do it!

Rachna, I'm sorry!

Misha, it was actually a good movie.

Alexandra, I understand Nascar obsessions.

Annalisa, you are welcome.

CM, I'm sorry!

Some say Deep Space 9 is darkest of the Star Treks which is cool but don't forget Klingon Warrior Worf from TNG! When he joined the ranks of DS9, treks greatness continued to expand throughout the stars. LOL.

Why Firefly ended after 14 episodes is a true mystery.

Science Fiction Rocks!

This time it seems the women's contingent from the USA is a winner on many levels :)

I loved your Olympics piece over at Nicole's blog. You should win gold for it ;D

I'm looking forward to the big reveal! We have to wait till Monday ;D okay...

Yo, I'm so hooked on Breaking Bad. When it recently aired I bought Funyuns and BB T-shirts on ETSY. My wallpaper is yellow with Walt n' Jessie~ Jessie is growing a heart and Walt is losing his...scary stuff! We discovered it six wks ago and streamed all four seasons. The actor that played Gus is going to be on the new show Revolution Sept 17th!

I concur with most of your TV choices, but one of my favorite shows from the past was Buffy the Vampire Slayer, don't even watch the new stuff -- so much soap opera out there. Just want to be entertained.

Thanks for the Insecure Writer's Support Group. Great idea!

Ahh, so many sports, so little time. I have to admit, I don't have one favorite.

As for the TV shows - I have always been the Star Trek fan. I need to watch some of the old episodes again.

Good luck to TJ with the book cover reveal!

My olympic highlight has been the 800 meters finals with the unbelievable winner David Rudisha!

We just became addicted to Breaking Bad this summer. We started at the beginning on NetFlix, and are now up to the third season. Great show that must hold the record for most hairless actors. Julie

Spacerguy, Worf was a great addition to DS9.

Damy, they've certainly cleaned up in basketball.

Ella, I got the Bronze, which is good enough. And after watching all the seasons on NetFlix, I'm hooked on Breaking Bad as well.

Yolanda, glad you've enjoyed the IWSG.

Julie, that's how I started as well.

I missed the final game, as we were in-flight, but that match between the US and China was INCREDIBLE.

Patricia Stoltey said...

Beach volleyball seems to be more popular with men than women. I think it's boring compared to full team indoor volleyball...but I'm not a guy... :D

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Melissa, Burn Notice is awesome.

Milo, yes it was!

Patricia, I watched both.

We've caught some gymnastics and 10 meter diving, along with the 5000 meter final (oh what a joy to watch) and some other random stuff. The Engineer didn't want the boys watching beach-bikini volleyball no matter how athletic...sigh.

I'm a netflix addict, too. Your current watch list is almost an exact match for Jake's! Don't let the fact that he's 15 make you feel less manly...he likes shows like that I we let him choose his TV (just not beach volleyball, ahem, which was mostly I think for YellowBoy...whose 12...)

We loved all the Star Trek series, and yes CURSE YOU FOX. I'll never forgive them for Firefly. Never. They had a perfect franchise, same premise as the old original Star Trek, and they could have kept going FOREVER. I don't remember who played Jayne, name escapes me and I'm true proud to cheat, but I did see him in one of those generic "support your team" commercials. He was in a yellow jersey with 1/2 yellow, 1/2 blue hair. Good to see him employed!

Looking forward to the reveal...and participating.

The Olympics were fun to watch. I can't believe they're already over. As a kid, I used to love Lost in Space and the original Star Trek. Quantum Leap was also a fun show.

A lot of my favourite shows are British ones - Doctor Who, Merlin, Sherlock. Big Bang Theory is a staple for me, and I've also started getting into The Legend of Korra

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Tina, Baldwin has been very busy after Firefly, but it was a role he could've played for years. I'm nearing the end of NetFlix - is your son close as well?

Joyce, it's sad they are now done. What will I watch tonight?
