IWSG, IWSG Anthology Contest, April Movie Preview, WEP Challenge, The Dirt Review, Con Photos, and Rescuing Mara’s Father

It’s time for another group posting of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! Time to release our fears to the world – or offer encouragement to those who are feeling neurotic. If you’d like to join us, click on the tab above and sign up. We post the first Wednesday of every month. I encourage everyone to visit at least a dozen new blogs and leave a comment. Your words might be the encouragement someone needs.

The awesome co-hosts for the April 3 posting of the IWSG are J.H. Moncrieff, Natalie Aguirre, Patsy Collins, and Chemist Ken!

April 3 question: If you could use a wish to help you write just ONE scene/chapter of your book, which one would it be? (examples: fight scene / first kiss scene / death scene / chase scene / first chapter / middle chapter / end chapter, etc.)

I think I have most of those under control – fight and death scenes, first chapter… All right, how about the darned kissing scene? I think I have a total of three in all of my books. Maybe four. Not easy to write. And certainly not going beyond a kiss!

What do you need help with?

Announcing the Insecure Writer’s Support Group 2019 Anthology Contest!

That’s right, we’re changing things up this year – opening for entries sooner and extending the submission timeline. It now opens May 1 and closes September 4.

This year the genre is – Middle Grade Historical – adventure or fantasy.

We’ll announce the theme on May 1.

Ready to rock the history?

Movie Review – The Dirt

This was released in theaters and on NetFlix on the same day, so we watched it from the comfort of our home.
Motley Crue hit it big when I was in my very late teens. I thought they were all right, but was never really a fan. Despite that, I was entertained by this portrayal of the early years of the Crue. (Before their first record deal through Vince Neil rejoining the band.)
The actors looked a lot like them and did a great job at making them almost sympathetic. Almost.
Here’s what we learn from the film:
The band members destroyed a lot of relationships along the way.
Tommy Lee actually had a good relationship with his parents.
Mick Mars was the closest thing to a voice of reason in the band. (Which isn’t saying much.)
Nikki Sixx was just about as messed up and damaged as a person can get – and still live. (Which he almost didn’t.)
Vince Neil really loved his daughter, Skylar.
Ozzy Osbourne was stoned-drunk crazy. (Wait, we already knew that…)
It was entertaining though. If you can stomach the craziness (which I’m sure is much milder than it really was), it’s worth a watch.

April Movie Preview

Here are the upcoming theatrical releases for April! As always, descriptions courtesy of the IMDB. Snark provided by me.

5 -

Shazam
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson's case, by shouting out one word - SHAZAM! - this streetwise fourteen-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult superhero Shazam.
Director: David F. Sandberg
Stars: Zachary Levi, Djimon Hounsou, Michelle Borth, Mark Strong
At least this Shazam isn’t riding around in a Winnebago with an old guy. (Remember that 70’s kids’ show?) And it’s getting amazing reviews!

12 -

Hellboy
Based on the graphic novels by Mike Mignola, Hellboy, caught between the worlds of the supernatural and human, battles an ancient sorceress bent on revenge.
Director: Neil Marshall
Stars: David Harbour, Ian McShane, Milla Jovovich, Daniel Dae Kim
I’ll miss Ron Perlman, but I’m really looking forward to an R-rated Hellboy!

Missing Link
Mr. Link recruits explorer Sir Lionel Frost to help find his long-lost relatives in the fabled valley of Shangri-La. Along with adventurer Adelina Fortnight, this trio of explorers travel the world to help their new friend.
Director: Chris Butler
Stars: Timothy Olyphant, Zoe Saldana, Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson
Sounded stupid – however, it looks really funny. And it’s from the same people who did Kubo and the Two Strings, which was a work of art.

26 -

Avengers: Endgame
After the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers assemble once more in order to undo Thanos' actions and restore order to the universe.
Directors: Anthony Russo | Joe Russo
Stars: Brie Larson, Scarlett Johansson, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper
Christmas has come to Geek Town!!

What do you need help with? Posting for WEP this month? Seen The Dirt? Looking forward to any movies this month? And can you write a middle grade story?

With the A to Z Challenge this month and my need for some writing time, I am taking most of April off. I will be back on April 22 with a special post from the Masquerade: Oddly Suited authors and some movie reviews.

Yet another anthology for me to devour? Happy dances.

Hi Alex - IWSG and WEP ... all good blog hops. Haven't seen those movies ... but have seen many others. My next will be WEPping ... omitting the A-Z this year - the need to do other things takes over. Cheers to everyone and good luck to one and all too - Hilary

Sarah Foster said...

I've written so many kissing scenes that I'm pretty sure I have it down at this point. I think I'm bad with endings so I would love if the rest of my book would just write itself.

J.H. Moncrieff said...

Congrats to Diane on her new release!

I'm curious about The Dirt. I've had the book for ages and haven't gotten around to reading it yet, but those behind-the-scenes accounts are usually interesting, even if you weren't a fan.

Elizabeth Spann Craig said...

There isn't much kissing going on in my books, ha. Maybe I'd get help with that...or the ending.

I did watch The Dirt out of curiosity. Mick Mars always seemed to be the grownup of the group (definitely reinforced by this film).

Pat Hatt said...

Don't have to worry about you with the old kiss and tell then, huh? lol Shazam and Avengers are on my list.

Erika Beebe said...

Kissing scenes are tough. I go back to books I thought made them seem easy and take notes of the structure. Avengers End Game will be a must for me. Happy IWSG Day :)

Cathrina Constantine said...

I'm looking forward to this new Hellboy because I loved David Harbour in Strangers Things. And, Avengers, Endgame is breaking the internet in tickets sales. LOL !!!

Have a great week, and a nice break in April.

Stacy McKitrick said...

The scene I'd wish for help for: the ending. I struggle with those all the time.

My son saw Shazam (early showing) and really enjoyed it. So yeah, now I want to see it. I'm also looking forward to The Avengers: Endgame.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Hilary, you always write something great for the WEP Challenge.

Sarah, want to trade?

JH, I'm not a fan and I found it really engaging.

Elizabeth, he was also several years older than the rest of the band.

Erika, that's an idea.

Cathrina, I think they got a great actor to play Hellboy!

Natalie Aguirre said...

I've never written kissing scenes yet, but will have to do so in my current manuscript. That's going to be a struggle for me too. Share your wisdom once you get yours right.

T. Powell Coltrin said...

Ha ha, about the kissing scene. The only reason I MIGHT be able to write one is from my earlier adult years. While the babies were napping, I read a lot of Harlequins. They were so tame.

Lots of good movies that i want to see. That picture of your books at the con is so cool!

Happy IWSG Day!

Teresa

Nilanjana Bose said...

Kissing I can manage, fighting is what I need help with :)

Avengers definitely on my wishlist. WEP is going to be phenomenal this month, thanks.

S.A. Larsenッ said...

Love your thoughts about The Dirt! I haven't had time to watch it yet, but I have to admit - I was a HUGE crew fan when I was in high school. HUGE. Not sure if it was because of Nikki's heroine halo or what? LOL JK The idea of Mick being the stability of the band just doesn't sound right, does it? Thanks for the IWSG!

Jennifer Hawes said...

Middle Grade is my fave--to read and to write. Something about the innocence at that age and all the adventures they can have! Okay, I'm sorta excited about Avengers, but why am I not completely on board?? I think I'd rather see Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Just saying.

Madeline Mora-Summonte said...

I'm too excited for the return of GoT to care about movies! :)

I hope your time off is productive, Alex. I'm doing something similar.

Angela Brown said...

Awesome to see the next IWSG Anthology contest getting ready to hop on the scene.

If I had a scene I could use a wish to write, it would be the death scene. Losing my mother as a college student many, many moons ago has made death a sensitive matter for me.

Seriously excited for Avengers: Endgame. I agree with you that this movie is definitely Christmas coming to geektown :-)

Chemist Ken said...

I wasn't into rock music much during my formative years. It wasn't until I went to college that I paid more attention. Now I'm the only one in my age group who doesn't know the names of the bands we grew up with.

BTW, nice con pic!

Lynn La Vita said...

I just finished Dragon of the Stars. What a page turner! (Yup, I'll send you an email telling you what happens to Aden.) For me, I'm glad you did not go beyond the kiss. For many reasons, I'm happy to share at a different time.
What do I need help with? Ready access to my imagination.

Jennifer Lane said...

The "darn kissing scene", LOL.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Nila, I can help you with fighting.

Sheri, it doesn't sound right!

Jennifer, the contest fits you well.

Angela, I'm sorry.

Ken - funny!

Lynn, thank you!

Mary Aalgaard said...

I don't think my first comment took. Anyway, I think the Missing Link movie looks funny, and I'm sure I'll go to The Avengers with my boys!
Good luck with those kissing scenes!

Toi Thomas said...

Thanks for hosting another great month.
Thanks for The Dirt review. I might check it out.
All the best with your time off.

Jemi Fraser said...

The kissing scenes can definitely be a challenge - and I write romance! :)
Looking forward to the anthology theme!

Patsy said...

I've never tried writing middle grade stories – and wouldn't know where to start.

Christine Rains said...

Nice choice for the anthology theme. Excited for Endgame, but what geek isn't?! Enjoy your time off this month. :)

Nick Wilford said...

WEP has a great theme this month. Looking forward to the entries.

I find kissing scenes far from easy too!

Arlee Bird said...

My youngest brother who passed away a couple of years ago was a Motley Crue fan. I have all of his CD collection which is mostly music I haven't listened to over the years. Maybe I should sample some Crue and then see the film. I'm not sure I'd like the behavior of the band, but I've been hearing buzz about this movie. Maybe, maybe not.

Oh my. I'm so ready to see the next Avengers. Wonder how (if?) they'll turn this around and who gets to come back to life. The DIY MFA sounds interesting!

Patricia Stoltey said...

I enjoyed Bohemian Rhapsody so I'll probably watch The Dirt as well. There's something that fascinates me about the tendency for these brilliant musicians to self-destruct in one way or another. I guess that the sociology major part of my brain...trying to figure out individuals and their connections with groups. It's a puzzle.

Meka James said...

I'm a little iffy on the new Hellboy. I enjoyed the Ron Perlman ones so I worry this will be messed up like they did to the new Mummy. We shall see though.

Avengers...last movie I watched was the last Thor. I've yet to see Infinity Wars all the way through. I did see the end, so I will at least know where this picks up since my family has already called for Family Movie night.

Diane Burton said...

Thanks for mentioning my new release (Rescuing Nara's Father) and first middle grade fiction. Love the genre for the anthology challenge. :) Good luck with those kissing scenes. Never easy.

Tamara Narayan said...

Pet Sematary is almost here and, of course, my scary movie buddy, my kid, is going out of town for a band trip. Really? Oh well. I'd rather have an uncrowded theater anyway.

Melissa said...

The Dirt sounds interesting. I know those bands. (Translation: I'm old. LOL) I have to admit that I assumed Mick Jagger was thin from too much cocaine and partying. When he got sick, I was surprised to discover he runs miles every day and eats like an athlete. That'll teach me to assume...

Hmm... I probably struggle most with my opening scenes.

CV Grehan said...

DIY-MFA <-- love this! I'll be checking out The Dirt, verrrry soon.
Thanks for all you do, Alex!

LD Masterson said...

Okay, if it's a total wish thing, I want to be able to write a steamy love/sex scene that would magically disappear if one of my grandkids started to read it. (Hey this is a real problem.)

Sadira Stone said...

For me, the kissing scenes (and scenes that go further) are my stock in trade. It's that swampy middle I need help with. Thanks as always for the movie recommendations. I wish you happy writing in April!

Joylene Nowell Butler said...

The last I saw Ozzi he was travelling around the world with his son and being just as loonie as ever. Quite a character. His wife seems to be doing well though. Happy Wednesday, Alex.

Roland D. Yeomans said...

I cannot wait for ENDGAME, but work will force me. Just as well for the first days are already sold out! SHAZAM looks to be fun, and I will try to catch it, too. Middle Grade historical fantasy? I'm there! Don't expect to win, but the race will be fun. :-)

cleemckenzie said...

Chemist Ken had the same issue with kissing scenes. He came up with a brilliant idea: find a kissing scene ghost writer.

Those cons look like a lot of fun.

Bish Denham said...

I'm looking forward to, once again, trying to get a story sent in for the anthology!

XmasDolly said...

I miss you on the A to Z game (sorry I don't know what else to call it). I wish I was smarter. Things just don't stay in my head. I learn something and then within hours (sometimes days) it seems like it moves on to let room in my brain for other things. Now things that I like does stay longer, but... I know you think I'm a kook. Oh well, just wanted to say Good Morning & Happy C day. Also, I may type some more of my book... not sure. I'd love to have you read it some time. Have a great day. Guess I'm having one of those days where I'm feeling sorry for myself. Oh well, I'm a boob I know it. oooooo Cool title Forest of Ghosts huh... hmmmmmmmmmm. Have a wonderful day my friend. You know my brother past when he was 44 yrs. old & it was just him & I. I have no immediate family left to talk too. hmmm Have a great day my friend. I wish you nothing, but good things always!

Loni Townsend said...

Lots of fun movies this month!

I'm terrible at kissing scenes too, so that'd be a good option if I were to use a wish!

Carrie-Anne said...

Enjoy your April break! I'll be entering this month's WEP contest and the next IWSG anthology contest. I need to participate in more story contests.

H. R. Sinclair said...

What an awesome photo form the con! Very cool indeed. I haven't seen anything lately.

Rachna Chhabria said...

Hi Alex, I too struggled with the kissing scenes in my love story. Would have wished for lots of help there. Middle grade is my favourite, to read and write. Hope I can participate in the anthology contest this year.

Anonymous said...

Can I use my wish on titles? If not, then fight scenes. I have trouble getting the images in my head into words on paper.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Nick, you understand...

Lee, you will hear enough of the music watching the film - just watch the movie.

Lisa, there's a lot of speculation on who will live and who won't...

Patricia, the Crue did indeed self-destruct!

Meka, you need to watch it soon then.

Diane, you're welcome.

Melissa, I didn't know that.

LD - funny!

Roland, go for it.

Lee, good idea!

Marie, I hope you find some cheer really soon. You need it!

Rachna, I hope you can!

Patricia - titles! I should have thought of that.

L.G. Keltner said...

The genre for the next anthology contest is a fun one, and I'm eager to see which theme is selected. My husband and I watched The Dirt the other night. It was an enjoyable watch.

The Angry Lurker said...

I'm looking forward to some more Hellboy!

SpacerGuy said...

I dig Motley Crue, these guys lived the wild life. Great music and Women, tons of cash to snort and buy blow but hey you've got to draw the line somewhere and thats just it, MC didn't! Some say thats rock en roll. Still 100 million records across the globe. I mean, WOW and what about Sixx' near death? I was doing my leaving in 1989, hehe. I can't even begin to describe the sheer madness they got up to. The movie ain't bad, Osbourne is a total whackjob.

diedre Knight said...

Howdy Captain!

Shazam sounds like a must-see film for a favorite friend - and I ;-)
Can't wait for "Rescuing Mara's Father".
I'm interested in the next Anthology contest. The middle grade genre is always engaging as, at that age, there's always something going on that merits writing about.
Now that my story is so near completion I can taste it, I'm worried that I've taken too much liberty with an underlying element. I'm thinking an interview with someone "in the know" would be beneficial.
I still haven't seen "A Quiet Place", and I hope to see "The Mule"

Happy writing!

Lots of movies to look forward to this spring. It's a great time to be into the superhero genre. Looking forward to the DIY MFA.

Mary Kirkland said...

If you read some of the romance books I post on my blog, you'd have no problem writing a kissing scene...or more. lol

I'm looking forward to HellBoy too, I wish it was Ron Perlman but this looks so good.

Avengers: Endgame is getting me excited to see it. Really looking forward to that.

Sandra said...

I love the pic of fans holding up your book. Kudos, Alex.

Juneta key said...

I'm looking forward to the next Avenger. Love the con pictures of SW heroes holding your books. That is so cool. Happy IWSG!

Rhonda Albom said...

Your question really has me thinking. I gave up on my creative non-fiction after my critique group changed it so much I no longer recognized the characters, and since it was based on a true travel story of my family, that's pretty bad. I put the book aside, but it has been far too long now. Perhaps I should have another look and see what it is that is keeping me away.

Tonja Drecker said...

Congrats, Diane! Action scenes are so much easier to write than kissing ones. I can't help but giggle the entire time when I write one and edit it.

L. Diane Wolfe said...

Glad you liked the photos.

All the movies look enticing.

Michael Offutt, Phantom Reader said...

Those are cute pictures of nerds holding your books. I'm glad that April is bringing lots of entertainment that I like to view. I've got a lot of things on my mind with an aging parent and caregiving. Escapism sounds like a perfect thing to indulge in from time to time.

XmasDolly said...

Hello my friend, You probably won't even get down this far to read my comment, but I did do one earlier so I hope you got a chance to read that one. I wrote a book and I really would like you to read it. I'm going to have to retype it and put it on my computer. I had some pages typed up, but I lost it somewhere on this stupid computer. It's hard for me to retype because it was something about part of my life that I'd rather forget. Oh well, such is life as they say. Have a great day my friend. I need to go lay down for a while.

And yeah...those kissing scenes... giggle.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

LG, hopefully when the kids were asleep!

Spacer Guy, and the part with Ozzy was a hundred percent true - crazy and gross!

Diedre, hope you submit to the next anthology then.

Mary, could never write more!

Rhonda, you should! With the fan base you have built up with your travel blog, people would love to read it.

Marie, be happy to read at least a little bit of it.

Hi, Alex! I got home late yesterday evening, and I've just gotten my IWSG Day post up now. Better late than never ~ eh? I'm really glad that the IWSG has extended the anthology contest time. The genre looks intriguing, but it's a genre that I have never written. We shall see! The diyMFA/IWSG partnership is one I can't wait to explore and learn from. All the best to you as you make your rounds today. Sending you a big shot of energy!

Olga Godim said...

Kissing scenes - not my forte at all. I don't think every book needs them, unless you write romance. Which you don't.
Middle Grade fiction is also something I'm not good at, or children's fiction in general, so I'll pass on this year's anthology.

Anonymous said...

No kissing scenes for me! I'm all about killing people off. The anthology is intriguing - I've never written middle grade. Might give it a try.

I just saw the movie US. OMG, so creepy and scary! Not for the faint of heart. Saw a preview for a new Shaft movie, which looks hilarious. I might drag myself out and see it.

Liz A. said...

I hope you get a lot of writing done. April is a good time to step back while the blogosphere goes a little nutso.

A new Hellboy and no Ron Perlman? So wrong. I have to watch the new Avengers movie, because I can't get over the previous sucky end.
