  1. All hail the Gregorian calendar!!

Nice to know I'm making slightly more than average income of 1987, but I sure miss that gas price.

    ....dhole

  2. Never warmed to Yes. Probably because someone I really disliked LOVED them. Such a silly reason to write anything off.
Good luck today. Will Jezebel help or hinder? You or your opponent.

  3. The Princess Bride is one of the most quoted movies I know, and it led to many great conversations among my friends. One of my high school teachers was obsessed with that movie.

I turned 2 in 1987, and that's the year my husband was born.

  4. I remember playing Street Fighter 2 in the arcades and on Nintendo. An older pal - about ten years older (a work colleague) - loved the original Street Fighter. We caught him in a different arcade one day, playing it. We balked at the blocky graphics and total crapness. He was of a different generation. :-)

  5. The eighties were a blur for me, so much changed. Vancouver hosted Expo 86 among other things.

Of course the ninja army must vote for the Capt'n, or we might be fed to the the clone machine. Those little dwarves are cute. . . as Robyn said.

  6. I want my one second back, haha. Great year for music AND movies...as you wish. ;)

I'm gonna see Spiderman this weekend. Any bets on Emma Stone's character kicking the bucket in this one?

  7. I've been to the dragon cave and you had some wicked moves! ;)
I need to see Godzilla and I wish gas prices were rolled back to 1987.

  8. Hi Alex - Your population has grown somewhat and that second - I'd forgotten about that adjustment ... Julie has some wonderful stories on life - love reading them. Medeia and Elizabeth - I need toread - good luck to all authors - off to the cave .. Hilary

  9. Just come from the cave and still chuckling! Some awesome shapes on the dance floor!

1987 seems a long time ago and a special year for two lovely lady bloggers.

  10. I don't know Julie, but Medeia is a brilliant blogger. And I'm so excited for Elizabeth's new book!

1987? Erm, for me that was just one of those boring non-descript years where I went to school, and ALWAYS did my homework ;-)

  11. 1987 wasn't such a good year for me, given the then-unexplained issues I had. If only I'd been born 15-20 years later, my elementary school years would've been so much easier.

In Albany, we had a huge snowstorm on October 4th of that year. It was so bad, trees and utility poles broke. This was shortly after my family had moved into the house I grew up in, until age sixteen.

    ReplyDelete
  12. People still love Zelda today. That's a long run.

We've got several of those albums on disc, and transferred to iPods, including yes. Hubby's probably got some on tape and records too, lol

Hoping Spiderman is still awesome too. :)

  13. I didn't realize just how awesome 1987 was for gaming till now. I guess I must have been blinded by The Legend of Zelda. :D

  14. 1987 - I was working hard and possibly making a lot more than the average wage for that year.

I was in the pub industry, my husband was Head Chef at the Lorne Hotel on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia.

We worked hard, but played hard too and lived above the disco, so didn't get any sleep until it shut at 4:30am each Sunday morning.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I remember the song U2 The Joshua Tree, but it wasn't until 2008 I actually saw a Joshua Tree whilst in the US.

Son John was playing Pro soccer.
    those were the days.

    Yvonne.

  16. Hi Alex - I remember this year, because I got married to none other than hubby (bless!).
I didn't realize the Simpsons were that far back.
Yay for Julie (Empty Nest Insider) - a great personality with a sense of humour.
I have only just joined Medeia, thanks to you.
All the best to Elizabeth with Bella's Point. I must speak with her.

  17. Thanks for featuring me. I was ten most of that year since I have a December birthday. A great year in music and movies.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Elephant, I can understand that.

LG, I feel so old now...

    Ilima, it could happen...

    Carrie-Anne, I'm sorry.

Rosey, we finally ditched most of our records.

    Carolyn, that's late!

    Medeia, you're welcome!

  19. Hang in there, Alex. One. More. Day.

And thanks again for hosting this year's A to Z blogging challenge.

    ReplyDelete
  20. LOL Were you trying to see if we're paying attention? Kitty litter was invented in '47.

I love that Yes song Love Will Find a Way.

Excited for Elizabeth. That's a lovely cover.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Interesting factoids again, Alex. Not sure how you compiled all of this and kept sane during the Challenge. Good folks featured today. Medeia is a peach. Wishing her every success with her recent release. Congrats to Elizabeth!

  22. It's very scary that we've added two billion people in less than thirty years. The Earth isn't infinite.

    Good luck, Mini-Alex!

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1987 was special to me because that was the year I graduated high school. Gah! I am old! Nah, old is a stage of mind and I think like a thirty-year old.

I was always on the fence about Yes. They were good to me but not great. Then again, they produced sound like there were ten guys in the band not what, three? That's pretty awesome.

Oh, and Princess Bride - Inconceivable!
    Love, love, love that movie!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ah, the Princess Bride - what a great movie! And thank God for the invention of kitty litter!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yay for disposable contact lenses! Really, it's the little things sometimes. :)
Anyway, thanks for sharing that lovely cover for Elizabeth Seckman's book. I'm such a romantic ...

  31. I would have thought kitty litter had been around a lot longer than that. Waves to Julie and Medeia. Elizabeth's cover reveal is beautiful. Off to cast my vote (good luck).

  32. Gas was what?!! 89 cents??

I am looking forward to Godzilla. I feel like Godzilla and I have grown old together.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think you are right, my friend. The dwarves have conspired against you but Don't understimate the power of S.A.M. Remember what her name stands for. Oh! And she wants you to know she is not a child, she is almost as old as I am, but with a very small body to be able to sneak around in the presence of a dragon. She is a dirty player and I bet my scales there is still boicot to be seen.

    I love Elizabeth's cover!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Wow, I can't believe how little people made back then. I do remember gas being cheap. Cigarettes too.
Joshua Tree--what an amazing album. I used to play it over and over.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I've never heard of the music...but I do know about The Princesses Bride and Predator!

Godzilla! I plan on going to that one. I've seen almost all of the Godzilla movies, even the original ones.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I didn't like The Princess Bride when I first saw it other than the grandpa/grandson part. Now I love it.

Off to Al's website now. Ship me some hot tamales and I will definitely vote for you. I will have to talk to Sir Jeff.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Love YES!!!

I'm so amazed how many RUSH albums have been throughout your posts!

I'm going to miss your retro look at my life. : )

    OH! NO! There goes TOKYO!!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Wow, that is some low pay, barely make it with that today. X-men is what I'm waiting for, Spiderman may be good, but I'm just waiting for them to reboot it again lol soon about that time for us to see how he was bit for the bazillionth time. Lethal weapon is a great one.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 1986/1987 was my first year of high school. Had to take public transportation - no school buses for us. Thought I was so grown-up. Sigh.

Getting more and more excited about seeing Godzilla! :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Melissa, that fact might be wrong. Maybe it was mad commercial then.

Joy, I had fun putting it together.

    Kirsten, I'm grateful for contacts.

Susan, I feel the same way...

Al, I home SAM can pull out an upset for me.

Jo, they are in the mail!

  41. That was an awesome year for movies. I was a freshman in high school, and I remember seeing The Princess Bride at the theater. It blew my mind.

I think we saw Empire of the Sun on a field trip. That movie stayed with me a long time.

    Hoping Godzilla doesn't suck...

  42. 1987 was a great year for me. Love Princess Bride. Off to visit Father Dragon...

  43. I suppose 1987 was an important year for me since I was born and everything...;) Didn't see The Princess Bride until I was a teenager, but love it, of course!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Kitty Litter came to America. I didn't use kitty litter until 1997 when I invited a newborn kitty inside.

    I will see spiderman--pretty sure.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Princess Bride = made of awesome.

I love Lethal Weapon - watched them all a few years back for the first time, and the first was really the only one that I thought was a 5/5 stars movie. It was more focused on character development, I think.

I loooove Spaceballs. And now I want to listen to "Raise Your Hands". hehe

    ReplyDelete
  46. I want all those movies in my collection! What a year!

  51. Love the Princess Bride, and Empire of the Sun. Lethal Weapon is fun as well as the rest of series. I shall vote for you! I want to see Godzilla because...it's Godzilla! oh boy you would have to pick 1987-not a good year. My dad had kidney cancer operation but then his hand would jerk and go numb. in the spring I got pneumonia, then Heat stroke and then a very, very bad case of Poison ivy. It covered my entire body and I swelled up and one eye was closed. My dad a brain cancer and had an operation but we found out he was terminal. 2 weeks after he came home we had a fire in our sawmill that caused extensive damage and 2 weeks after that I was in the hospital with appendicitis. I then started feeling worse and worse. Everyone was concerned but it, thankfully, turned out I was hypoglycemic. Let's just say that was a horrible year

  52. 1987 - great year! And, I started driving that year. :)
Yay for Medeia and Julie, and Go Elizabeth!

  56. Spaceballs AND the Princess Bride in the same year? How cool is that.

Been looking forward to the reboot of Godzilla for a long time. The NFL Draft and Godzilla are helping make the month of May a real winner entertainment wise.

  57. Yes is one of my favorite bands, but I'm more into the older stuff like Close to the Edge. I saw U2 live in 1987 on the Joshua Tree tour in Indy. They opened for themselves acting like a bunch of hicks because Los Lobos was late. It was awesome. *Hot Tamales on the way*

    ReplyDelete
  58. Aside from The Princess Bride, Kitty Litter and The Simpsons, '87 was the year I married my beautiful bride.

    ReplyDelete
  59. What I loved about 1987 was that my son turned a year old! And, I have to admit, I fell in love with The Princess Bride. I own it, and the soundtrack and a special anniversary edition of the novel. I'm hooked on it, like so many others... I also LOVED Lethal Weapon. How strange is that, from one extreme to the other. Spaceballs I can still watch over and over and the Empire of the Sun made me more interested in Asian culture than anything since James Clavell's Shogun novels... Also, on the music front, I liked YES and U2! I'm on my way over to Father Dragon, and Julie's site and Medeia's. I love the name Medeia, sounds like someone in a novel...

    ReplyDelete
  60. Sarah, I'd say that makes it important.

Teresa, once they come in, they never leave...

Jean, Hot Tamales coming your way.

    Lee, that made me chuckle.

    Birgit, sounds like the worst!

    Shell, that's funny.

    Dean, very cool!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I have a large collection of Yes albums, but I don't have this from 1987. I've seen the trailers for Godzilla and both hubby and I are actually kind of interested!

    ReplyDelete
  62. As you know, I love Julie's blog. I featured her earlier in the challenge. She is so funny and just a super person.

I am looking forward to the new Spiderman movie. Loved the first one. Hope this one is just as good, if not better...:D

And, I have already been to Al's place. I had no idea you were so FLEXIBLE. Color me impressed.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I've been following Julie and Medeia a long time. They're great bloggers. Have just read Medeia's first book and glad she's published a second.

The Princess Bride is still a family favorite.

Hope you win. I'll put my vote in today!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Big fan of YES! I was thinking you might pick them.

In 1987 I went on my first cruise to the Bahamas with my Grandma Vivian and her friend, and my sister, whose high school grad present it was, who smartly picked her sister as her friend. Amazing good time, and life changing.

Where's the blood, boob, and carnage? Surely there will be some in Godzilla?

I need to go play some Rush...I'm seriously addicted to the point that my kids are wearing their noise cancelling headphones around the house. Mom wins.

  66. I can't believe we subtracted one second that year;-) Sounds like a great premise for a novel.
I remember helping my older sister pay for a gallon of gas by locating all the spare change in her car.
My fave part of 1987-CONTACTS! No more coke bottle glasses for me. LOL! Actually, I think I got them in '84--must have been experimental !!

Jennifer, it does sound like a novel premise.

Both Julie and Medeia are wonderful women! :)

Congrats to Elizabeth for her beautiful cover!

Running over now to Lord of the Clones!! Wahoo!!

  80. Interesting choice of this album, Alex.

While I liked Drama (in fact, the song "Tempus Fugit" got me into progressive rock), I was not a huge fan of 90125, which was, of course, their smash hit.

I like this one a little better than its predecessor, but still thought Drama was a better album.

Have you ever listened to their recent one, Fly From Here?

I'd be curious what you think (I like it a lot).

  81. Wow...1987 was the year I started college and really thought I was an "adult". LOL....how little I knew, back then.

I've never been a Legend of Zelda fan until recently, but I do have the original game downloaded to my Wii U and it's a lot of fun.

I'm skipping Spider Man 2 due to Jaime Fox's having a part in it....'nuff said.

  82. K, most of us would like to forget that age...

Hank, we get three villains for the price of one!

Lexa, maybe it was patented then...

Larry, I'm a big fan of their earlier work. They paved the way. I have heard a little from their new one, but haven't downloaded it yet. Will raid iTunes soon.

  83. Godzilla rocks! The whole world should see that movie!

I can't believe they adjusted the calendar by one second. I guess that goes to show, every second counts!

    ReplyDelete
  84. I'm really enjoying the different price lists. It's quite amazing how different certain things are here in Canada. For the most part, things are much more expensive, especially vehicles. A brand new car was 10 grande back in 1974. Today not so bad. You can get a new truck with nothing on it for 17k.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Okay Medeia makes me feel a little bit old. This was the year I graduated high school. This post is a fun little walk down memory lane.

    I love Spaceballs. It's hilarious.

  92. Ninja dude!

90125, one of my favourite albums. A somewhat different style for Yes, but I think it worked very well. Generator was equally brilliant.

Some most notable notes about 1987.

YES to everything here. That goodness this will be over tomorrow. Y O Y!

I remember it was quite a shock for most of us in the beginning, with a very heavy math course on a level far beyond highschool math. But after one semester I got used to the level, and then the fun started >:)

  98. Alex-- I am sooooo excited about 'Godzilla.' It looks great. Gareth Edwards is a solid director. He did the indie flick, 'Monsters' on $0 budget. I can't wait to see what he's going to do w/ Godzilla.

    1987-- fun times. I enjoyed the 80s!

  99. Mark, they can't all be perfect.

    Julie, I'm even older...

    Loni, we are multi-talented.

    Leovi, you rock!

    Robyn, no string cheese attached?

Gary, Trevor Rabin made all the difference.

Cold, that's how my college life began.

  100. I have Medeia's book and cover art featured on my blog on Saturday. Love that cover!

1987 -- I remember that one well, too. After two years living in the South of France, we came home. Quite an adjustment, although it would have been harder if we'd gone to Minnesota or North Dakota instead of Florida. :D

  101. i miss gas prices being under a buck!!

  102. What a year! The Simpsons, cat litter, supernovas...I think this might have been the year to end all years.

Yeah, I'd say a slew of supervillains trying to kill me might have an impact on my life.

  103. The Princess Bride - one of the best movies of all time, in my opinion :) Heading over to vote for you now!

  104. The eighties were the best decade for movies and music ... let's just ignore hair and fashion though :)

I'm in two minds about Spidey 2 - the first Amazing was fine, but I think this will suffer from the same thing that plagued Raimi's Spiderman 3 - too many villains.

  105. '87, huh? I was married with children. While I may not miss diapers I do miss cheap gas. It was in the 50-60 cent range when I started driving. And I miss those early Fox shows: Tracey Ullman show, 21 Jump Street, even the old Alien Nation.

I've followed Julie and Medeia for a while now. Fine ladies, both.

Had a blast watching your ninja army cut the rug. Quite the experience. Kung Fu Fighting is stuck in my head though...

  106. Fan of U2's Joshua Tree and yes to Godzilla!

  107. I'm heading over to cast my vote. Good movies in '87. Just got a new copy of The Princess Bride. I think one of my children absconded with mine.

  108. In 1987 I was three years old. JUST KIDDING. $.89 A GALLON for gas. YIKES!

  109. Tara, we need one.

    Jamie - let's!!

    Jeff, I remember those.

  110. Wow, has gas gone up since 1987! In 1987 I had a new born. Time sure does fly.

  111. I was too young then to remember much, but thanks for culture snippets, Alex :)

  112. What the heck did people do before cat litter?? I don't want to know actually. Ah, Princess Bride. Good stuff. As is Joshua Tree.

  113. I could watch Princess Bride every night. Love everything about it. I quote lines to my 5th graders and they have no clue. I wish I could be a fly on the wall when they finally connect all the crazy things their teacher used to say to the movie. I'm 1/2 way through Medeia's new book - fun read.

  114. The Simpsons animated shorts began as part of the Tracy Ullman show back in 1987, but the regular Simpsons show debuted in 1989. Just thought the distinction should be made.

Metal Gear! That was the beginning of a very long and convoluted franchise that kinda needs to be put out to pasture, I think. It has an illustrious past, though, and great games of yesteryear.

  115. I'm late to the party. Not sure I understand where to vote, but my vote goes to you, duh.

  116. Thank you so much for featuring me yesterday, Alex! I'm sorry that I didn't get here sooner, but we're in Israel visiting my mother-in-law. By the time I saw your email last night, I couldn't get on to your site because we lost Internet access. I really appreciate your kind words, and I'm proud to be in great company with Medeia, and Elizabeth! I'll try to cast my vote today if the polls are still open. Thanks again for making my day, Alex!

  117. Yes! Great feature for 87!

I love The Princess Bride & Untouchables. :)

  118. I can still remember how Bart Simpson T-shirts were banned at my junior high when that show first came out. Kids had to either change or turn the shirt inside out to thwart Bart from telling us not to have a cow.

And Princess Bride! I adore it. And marvel that Princess Buttercup grew up to become First Lady Claire Underwood...

One last comment and then I'll go away: Speaking of The Amazing Spiderman 2, might I recommend the recent Graham Norton Show interview with Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and Jamie Foxx.

  119. Hey Alex, did you know that Trevor Rabin is a South African born guitarist? I can remember him... back in the day, he was part of a local outfit called Rabbit.

I follow both Julie and Medeia.
Julie's posts are just what the doctor ordered!

  120. I was born in 1987! So of course, the year was epic ;)

  121. My mind is blown. I can't believe Kitty Litter wasn't invented until 1987.
    Good year for movies.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Thanks for the shout out! As always, you rock! (And they just bumped my release to July 1st, but no matter...I'm used to delays!)

Love Medeia and I always wondered who empty nest insider was.Now I know!

Not overly excited about Godzilla, but the new Spiderman looks amazing...hah...Gary will be jealous.

  123. WOW on remembering 1987. I didn't know cars were that expensive back then. I wonder if that was high end cars? Great post of remembering another bygone year!
