The Princess Bride is one of the most quoted movies I know, and it led to many great conversations among my friends. One of my high school teachers was obsessed with that movie.
ReplyDeleteI turned 2 in 1987, and that's the year my husband was born.
I remember playing Street Fighter 2 in the arcades and on Nintendo. An older pal - about ten years older (a work colleague) - loved the original Street Fighter. We caught him in a different arcade one day, playing it. We balked at the blocky graphics and total crapness. He was of a different generation. :-)

ReplyDelete1987? Erm, for me that was just one of those boring non-descript years where I went to school, and ALWAYS did my homework ;-)
1987 wasn't such a good year for me, given the then-unexplained issues I had. If only I'd been born 15-20 years later, my elementary school years would've been so much easier.
ReplyDeleteIn Albany, we had a huge snowstorm on October 4th of that year. It was so bad, trees and utility poles broke. This was shortly after my family had moved into the house I grew up in, until age sixteen.
People still love Zelda today. That's a long run.

ReplyDeleteI was in the pub industry, my husband was Head Chef at the Lorne Hotel on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia.
We worked hard, but played hard too and lived above the disco, so didn't get any sleep until it shut at 4:30am each Sunday morning.
I remember the song U2 The Joshua Tree, but it wasn't until 2008 I actually saw a Joshua Tree whilst in the US.

And she wants you to know she is not a child, she is almost as old as I am, but with a very small body to be able to sneak around in the presence of a dragon. That was an awesome year for movies. I was a freshman in high school, and I remember seeing The Princess Bride at the theater. It blew my mind.

ReplyDeleteLove the Princess Bride, and Empire of the Sun. Lethal Weapon is fun as well as the rest of series. I shall vote for you! I want to see Godzilla because...it's Godzilla! oh boy you would have to pick 1987-not a good year. My dad had kidney cancer operation but then his hand would jerk and go numb. in the spring I got pneumonia, then Heat stroke and then a very, very bad case of Poison ivy. It covered my entire body and I swelled up and one eye was closed. My dad a brain cancer and had an operation but we found out he was terminal. 2 weeks after he came home we had a fire in our sawmill that caused extensive damage and 2 weeks after that I was in the hospital with appendicitis. I then started feeling worse and worse. Everyone was concerned but it, thankfully, turned out I was hypoglycemic. Let's just say that was a horrible year

Yes is one of my favorite bands, but I'm more into the older stuff like Close to the Edge. I saw U2 live in 1987 on the Joshua Tree tour in Indy. They opened for themselves acting like a bunch of hicks because Los Lobos was late. It was awesome. *Hot Tamales on the way*

ReplyDeleteWhat I loved about 1987 was that my son turned a year old! And, I have to admit, I fell in love with The Princess Bride. I own it, and the soundtrack and a special anniversary edition of the novel. I'm hooked on it, like so many others... I also LOVED Lethal Weapon. How strange is that, from one extreme to the other. Spaceballs I can still watch over and over and the Empire of the Sun made me more interested in Asian culture than anything since James Clavell's Shogun novels... Also, on the music front, I liked YES and U2! I'm on my way over to Father Dragon, and Julie's site and Medeia's. I love the name Medeia, sounds like someone in a novel...

ReplyDeleteIn 1987 I went on my first cruise to the Bahamas with my Grandma Vivian and her friend, and my sister, whose high school grad present it was, who smartly picked her sister as her friend. Amazing good time, and life changing.

I'm a fan of Yes from the 70s. As a lifetime cat owner, Kitty Litter wasn't invented in '87 since I've been using it all my life. "Clumping" litter was invented in 1950. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitty_litter

I like this one a little better than its predecessor, but still thought Drama was a better album.

I'm really enjoying the different price lists. It's quite amazing how different certain things are here in Canada. For the most part, things are much more expensive, especially vehicles. A brand new car was 10 grande back in 1974. Today not so bad. You can get a new truck with nothing on it for 17k.

I remember it was quite a shock for most of us in the beginning, with a very heavy math course on a level far beyond highschool math. But after one semester I got used to the level, and then the fun started >:)

ReplyDeleteI'm in two minds about Spidey 2 - the first Amazing was fine, but I think this will suffer from the same thing that plagued Raimi's Spiderman 3 - too many villains.
'87, huh? I was married with children. While I may not miss diapers I do miss cheap gas. It was in the 50-60 cent range when I started driving. And I miss those early Fox shows: Tracey Ullman show, 21 Jump Street, even the old Alien Nation.

ReplyDeleteI could watch Princess Bride every night. Love everything about it. I quote lines to my 5th graders and they have no clue. I wish I could be a fly on the wall when they finally connect all the crazy things their teacher used to say to the movie. I'm 1/2 way through Medeia's new book - fun read.
ReplyDeleteThe Simpsons animated shorts began as part of the Tracy Ullman show back in 1987, but the regular Simpsons show debuted in 1989. Just thought the distinction should be made.
ReplyDeleteMetal Gear! That was the beginning of a very long and convoluted franchise that kinda needs to be put out to pasture, I think. It has an illustrious past, though, and great games of yesteryear.

I can still remember how Bart Simpson T-shirts were banned at my junior high when that show first came out. Kids had to either change or turn the shirt inside out to thwart Bart from telling us not to have a cow.

Hey Alex, did you know that Trevor Rabin is a South African born guitarist? I can remember him... back in the day, he was part of a local outfit called Rabbit.

WOW on remembering 1987. I didn't know cars were that expensive back then. I wonder if that was high end cars? Great post of remembering another bygone year!
