Because that year, Al Diaz said someone believed in him so much that it made him believe in himself as well. It was also the year Natalie Aguirre adopted her daughter from China in April, and it was the year Jamie Ayers got married!

Movie Review – Odd Thomas
Based on the novel by Dean Koontz and directed by Stephen Sommers.
The film follows a young man with clairvoyant abilities as he tries to uncover a terrible event that’s about to take place in his town.
The best way to describe this film is it’s a murder-mystery, supernatural, comedy thriller.
The ‘I see dead people’ concept isn’t original, but the movie executes it very well. It’s incredibly entertaining, powerful, and hits all the right notes.
It has a great cast. Anton Yelchin (Chekov from the latest Star Trek films) is Odd and plays the character perfectly and believably. Willem Dafoe is solid in his role as the police chief who not only benefits from Odd’s abilities, but he helps keep them a secret.
Overall, I was very impressed with this film and highly recommend it!

ReplyDeleteOh yeah, your post...I gave birth to Boy #3 that year so it goes without saying that 1998 is one of my favorite years.
Hard to believe Google has only been around that long, but I don't think I even had a "real" computer until 1999, complete with a color screen and real-looking graphics, not a blinking amber prompt.
Have I mentioned I'm first today? Not that it's all about me or anything...

ReplyDeleteWhen I went to go see Private Ryan, I wished my late Dad could've been with me -- he'd been a WWII vet and so for me that film was almost like a small pilgrimage.
I'm so glad for Milo's several releases! He's a superb writer.

The first thing I remember about 1998 is that my 2nd son was born on May 26th. The 2nd thing I remember is looking at the outside thermometer outside our duplex in Fort Worth and the reading being 100 degrees at MIDNIGHT!

Unfortunately it was horrible depicting two brothers who kept their mother under their bed. She was alive and only a torso. I couldn't watch it again for a while,but when I did, it was about an alien and I liked it.

ReplyDeleteI never was a big fan of the X Files tv series. I watched it occasionally and was moderately entertained. I did enjoy the movie...and found myself angry that Scully never did see the spaceship. She will always doubt the existence of aliens!
ReplyDeleteOther movies released that year that were my favorites was Saving Private Ryan and The Big Lebowski.
And I love Rob Zombie! His music has always been a joy, regardless of any lyrics about living dead girls or the like. The music itself is enough to trump any lyrics that otherwise doesn't suit my fancy.
I never really got into the X Files TV show - not sure why. The big romantic sap that I am totally loved Titanic. :)

ReplyDelete1998 was probably the one year I can remembre best of the last century. It was indeed a great year full of kindness. My only regret is that I probably didn't appreciated it as much as I should at that moment.
Oh and the video is so good I was tempted to invite you to a preview premier. Bad news is that your number took so long that The Baldinators will come in another installment. This dragon sometimes wishes to be an octopus.
I wanted to see Odd Thomas, but when I went to rent it, it wasn't available yet. I did find it peculiar that it went straight to video. But I'm glad to hear it won't be a disappointment!

Ah yes, I remember gas at $1.15/gallon fondly. And Dark City. Though for me, The X-Files movie was somewhat forgettable (probably in part because I stopped really watching after season 5.)

Loved the X files and watched every episode even the infamous inbred one. I have not heard about Odd Thomas but sounds intriguing. Now I want to see John Carter as I caught the last half hour of the film. I am bad that doesn't spoil it for me it just makes me want to see the movie or read the book more. 1998 was a fun year:) It was a year after I was married. We were happy and saving for my future home(It ended up being mine). hey-2nd time-fun year-yahooo!

ReplyDeleteI graduated high school in '98, and am proud I've never seen Titanic. It was so annoying how all the girls at my final high school were mooning all over it and seeing it over and over again. From what I've read, there are a LOT of anachronisms and historical inaccuracies.

Odd Thomas--one of my top ten books of all time. Yup. We saw the movie the day it came out. In the theater. I liked it, and it definitely incorporated many of the aspects of the book, but they did change a couple things. Dean Koontz is one of my all time favorite authors.

ReplyDeleteI became a fan of the X-Files by default because the one TV that most of us flocked to growing up was taken over by two of my cousins...who were die-hard X-Files fans. The music was creepy but it grew on my after a while. However, as much as I enjoyed watching the show, to this day, I still haven't seen the movie.
ReplyDeleteIf I can recall correctly, those die-hard "X-Files" cousins of mine were disappointed in the movie, so I kinda ignored the big-screen adaptation since I figured if they didn't like it and they were hardcore fans of the show, then I might be better just sticking with the TV episodes.
I still want the Mulder and Scully action figures. I've been holding out on ordering them but would love to have them so maybe I'll get around to finally picking them up one of these days :)
I can't say that I'm familiar with Odd Thomas. I doubt I've read that or any of Milo's books. I don't remember much about 1998 except for maybe it following the death of one of the biggest rappers involved in the East Coast vs. West Coast beef that claimed the lives of two popular and influential figures in hip-hop.

ReplyDeleteI had no idea there was an Odd Thomas movie. To be honest, I wasn't too wowed by the book, but maybe the movie will fix the problems I found in it.
Powertrip by Monster Magnet is a long-time favorite. Actually, it's a family-favorite, so we often play it in the car.
ReplyDeleteLast summer my older son was to a concert with Monster Magnet, and he was able to catch one of the drumsticks when they were thrown from the stage. As a good son, he gave it as a gift to me >:D

ReplyDeleteX-Files is forever. Saw The Mask of Zorro at Odean theatre before it closed down. I loved going there because they had an open roof and I could look at the night stars. Still miss it. Ninja or Bald Man? So hard to choose. Gee never thought I'd say that. A-Z is almost over and it has been a fun ride.

ReplyDeleteOdd Thomas sounds interesting. And yay for Natalie, Jamie, and Al!!!! 1998 . . . the first year I went to a CreationFest three day concert event - super fun! And the last time I water-skied well - four months pregnant.
ReplyDeleteI know this will come as a shock, but I have action figures of Mulder and Scully on my desk. Every few years my kids and I watch the alien mythology episodes in order. Loved the first X-Files movie, the second one was a dull thud.

ReplyDelete1998 was a very good year -- I took my solo trek to Norway, and my husband and I retired and moved from Florida to Colorado. Both were great decisions.

Good grief, I think I saw Titanic in the theater four times that year...and the fascination has persisted--since moving to London from the States over five years ago, I've been to Southampton three times and am still awed when I see that dock.

In any case, go Milo James Fowler! I've been following his career since he was still an aspiring author, and my jaw just drops over all the stories he's had published. Truly prolific and terrific. Bravo on his new series.
I haven't watched old school X-Files in forever! I need to break those out again.

I was such a huge X-Files fan! I think that was the first movie I ever went to on opening night.
ReplyDeleteI was obsessed with The X Files--had there been DVD seasons released I would have binge-watched, instead I VCR-taped re-runs and scoured local video stores for dual-episode VHS tapes they had out of earlier seasons. I had to catch up, Okay? A friend somehow got me an enormous poster for the movie from the actual theatre, which I still have.
ReplyDeleteI think the show went downhill after season 5 but I stayed faithful almost through the end--I gave up on the alien love child in season 8, but have since completed the entire series and would like a T-shirt to commemorate (season 9 is rough).
