The X-Files Movie – Fight the Future – 1998

And why is 1998 special?
Because that year, Al Diaz said someone believed in him so much that it made him believe in himself as well. It was also the year Natalie Aguirre adopted her daughter from China in April, and it was the year Jamie Ayers got married!

Father Dragon Al is an artist and writer who hails from Mexico. He’s a wise old dragon, tended to by many dwarves. (Even more the year they got a hold of my cloning machine.) Al is a multi-faceted person – devoted, caring, and a man of honor. My best friend, I’d trust him with my life. Al blogs at Dragon on a Mission.

Natalie is a writer and co-hosts a top young adult site. She gets the insider scoop on authors and agents and shares them with the world. One of the nicest people I know, Natalie is very involved and knowledgeable when it comes to books. She blogs at Literary Rambles.

Jamie is a young adult author and a teacher. She lives in sunny Florida with her husband, kids, and basset hound. Jamie has a passion for young people and a strong spiritual foundation. She’s a special lady who knows how to make everyone feel important. Find Jamie HERE

Movie Review – Odd Thomas

Based on the novel by Dean Koontz and directed by Stephen Sommers.
The film follows a young man with clairvoyant abilities as he tries to uncover a terrible event that’s about to take place in his town.

The best way to describe this film is it’s a murder-mystery, supernatural, comedy thriller.
The ‘I see dead people’ concept isn’t original, but the movie executes it very well. It’s incredibly entertaining, powerful, and hits all the right notes.
It has a great cast. Anton Yelchin (Chekov from the latest Star Trek films) is Odd and plays the character perfectly and believably. Willem Dafoe is solid in his role as the police chief who not only benefits from Odd’s abilities, but he helps keep them a secret.
Overall, I was very impressed with this film and highly recommend it!

Fan of the X-Files? Following Al, Natalie, and Jamie? Read any of Milo’s books? Seen Odd Thomas or read the book? Ready to visit Al tomorrow and cast your vote? And what do you remember best about 1998…?

  1. I'm first! I have never even been in the first 100 so I'm pretty happy about this.

Oh yeah, your post...I gave birth to Boy #3 that year so it goes without saying that 1998 is one of my favorite years.

Hard to believe Google has only been around that long, but I don't think I even had a "real" computer until 1999, complete with a color screen and real-looking graphics, not a blinking amber prompt.

Have I mentioned I'm first today? Not that it's all about me or anything...

  2. I'm getting my comment in early for a change!

When I went to go see Private Ryan, I wished my late Dad could've been with me -- he'd been a WWII vet and so for me that film was almost like a small pilgrimage.

I'm so glad for Milo's several releases! He's a superb writer.

1998 is one of my favourite years, Its the time I made a special connection with my spiritual master.

Titanic is one of my all time favourite movies.

  7. I love Dark City. I remember having to write a paper about that movie in college.

I turned 13 in 1998. I remember being so excited to officially be a teenager. It doesn't even seem like it was that long ago. Time sure does fly.

  8. No offense to you or Mark, Alex, but I've decided to vote for the sexiest one: the brown dwarf.

I feel so old after reading LG's comment. I don't remember 1998, but my 30s were a good decade.

  9. '98 was a bad year indeed. It lead to the boom, which lead to the bust and now everyone owes Germany money.

  10. Al is a wonderful artist, and an interesting character.

I enjoyed Leonardo's role in Titanic, but out of the list of movie choices for 1998 mine would be Blade.

  13. The first thing I remember about 1998 is that my 2nd son was born on May 26th. The 2nd thing I remember is looking at the outside thermometer outside our duplex in Fort Worth and the reading being 100 degrees at MIDNIGHT!

  14. I read Odd Thomas and enjoyed it immensely. I'll have to put it on my list to watch.

I just found Father Dragon Al. Can't wait to see the Lord of the Clones.

Ah, yes, Baldur's Gate. It's good I've moved on to a Mac or I'd still be playing that game. Many, many hours spent playing that game. Many, many hours. Have I mentioned many hours? Hmm, I really miss it….

    Many hours…

    I think I'm having withdrawals from Baldur's Gate…

  18. There was so much I loved about the X Files. So miss that show! It was funny how much Scully missed.

YAY! for Natalie and Jamie. Both are awesome.

Your comments about Odd Thomas have intrigued me. I'll keep this one in mind.

    LuAnn, that's hot.

Elsie, I'm sure we both wasted many, many hours...

    Natalie, you are most welcome.

Carol, guess I'm going to have to do something amazing then.

  21. So many great people in your post today! :)

I didn't watch X-Files at the time, but I got the DVDs for gifts and I'm loving them! :)

  24. Must admit, I'm an X-Files fan. In fact, watch the series reruns yesterday on Chiller. Lot of good movies out in 1998. Waves to Al, Natalie and Jamie. Congrats to Milo. Odd Thomas sounds good. Wishing the awesome Ninja Cloner much success and victory in the contest.

  25. Yay for the X-Files, Google's birth, and for the Broncos. (I hope they do it again soon with Peyton!) I loved the Blade franchise and Dark City.

Busy year, 1998. I'm happy for Al, Natalie and her daughter, and for Jamie.

    Congrats on winning Lee's contest!

I'm a huge Koontz fan, and I'm so glad his Odd Thomas character has caught on. I'm dying to see the movie!

  27. My second daughter was born in 98, so it was a great year for us.

I never really got into watching X-files but I didn't really watch tv when my girls were little, any free time was devoted to sleeping.

    Congrats to Milo!

    ReplyDelete
  28. What I've watched of the X Files I thoroughly enjoyed. Not seen enough of them sadly. I saw a lot of those movies and enjoyed them.

I am pleased to say I am grandmother to Father Dragon whom I agree is a wonderful man.

  29. You know, I never watched the X-Files. Maybe that was during the time when we stopped watching TV for several years...

Google being founded is interesting. It would be another five years before I got anywhere near the internet!

  34. Way to go Milo!

Re: X-Files. I'm always the last to come on board for popular shows. I was talked into watching one episode. Unfortunately it was horrible depicting two brothers who kept their mother under their bed. She was alive and only a torso. I couldn't watch it again for a while, but when I did, it was about an alien and I liked it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Congrats Milo!

I was just talking about this movie yesterday. I want to read the books first, but someone said they didn't like the movie. But I'm guessing it's because she loved the series so much.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ha, jinx on the X-files (Guess it's not such a big surprise since there are so very few X's to choose from & we're both doing retro).

All hail Father Dragon, Natalie & Jamie!

Glad to hear they did Koontz right w/ the movie.

  37. As a huge X-Files fan back in the day, I can honestly say finally getting a big screen version was very exciting :) Too bad the series went downhill after that...

Odd Thomas: haven't heard of it but it sounds like fun! I'll have to check it out!

Off to visit some new blog friends now!

    Happy Monday,

  38. X marks the right spot... cannot believe how much has changed in 15 ish years... you would think we were heading for better things in life, hope and well everything. If we had a crystal ball to see the future, I would have been prepared for it. Though that might have been an "X" file... theme out.

Thank you for making your A to Z extra special by adding so much life and care... you are a great person... Happy May!

  39. I'm a big X-Files fan. I've not heard anything about Odd Thomas, so I'm glad you reviewed it. Makes me want to see it more now. Can't wait to see what Al has in store for tomorrow! 1998 was the year I met my husband in person.

  40. Loved the X-Files Movie.
I still haven't seen Odd Thomas or read the book. I might have to put that on my list.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I loved the X-Files. Big Blue was my favorite episode.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I never was a big fan of the X Files tv series. I watched it occasionally and was moderately entertained. I did enjoy the movie...and found myself angry that Scully never did see the spaceship. She will always doubt the existence of aliens!

Other movies released that year that were my favorites was Saving Private Ryan and The Big Lebowski.

And I love Rob Zombie! His music has always been a joy, regardless of any lyrics about living dead girls or the like. The music itself is enough to trump any lyrics that otherwise doesn't suit my fancy.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I never really got into the X Files TV show - not sure why. The big romantic sap that I am totally loved Titanic. :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I loved the X-files. Also Titanic and Private Ryan. I've read most of the Odd Thomas books, just finished the most recent one and hope to see the movie soon.

Going over to vote for you now.

  45. By the Dragon Ancestors! There are tears in my eyes now. So many that I'll blame it to the cold bug bugging me because, you know, I don't get sappy on you. Although I must say I am deeply honored by your words and most of all by your trust. I treasure that.
1998 was probably the one year I can remembre best of the last century. It was indeed a great year full of kindness. My only regret is that I probably didn't appreciated it as much as I should at that moment.
Oh and the video is so good I was tempted to invite you to a preview premier. Bad news is that your number took so long that The Baldinators will come in another installment. This dragon sometimes wishes to be an octopus.

  46. I wanted to see Odd Thomas, but when I went to rent it, it wasn't available yet. I did find it peculiar that it went straight to video. But I'm glad to hear it won't be a disappointment!

  47. I remember the X-Files movie as being somewhat of a disappointment.

All hail the power of Google! Where would we be without it? Wait, let me search for the answer....

    ReplyDelete
  52. Did someone say Broncos? Yes, 98 was an awesome year for that. So was the year that followed. And thus was the rise of John Elway, and the sad, sad decline of Brett "I texted my junk to a girl while married, played till I was 60, and do jeans commercials now" Favre.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Al is a true sweetheart...er, dragon. The dwarves rock, too!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Loved the X-files. A teacher friend of mine used to work for Scully as a nanny back in the early 90's. She came to US from Australia and got a very cool job:)
Odd Thomas sounds like a good movie.

    ReplyDelete
  56. So much darn material on every post here, Alex. The X Files answered little even after such a long run. The movie should've done more, too, methinks. The second movie was even less on point! :-0
But they were good in themselves as entertainments. Great review.

I was looking at the Reflections suggestion, about making a Linky on the A-Z Challenge blog. I dunno if I did ANYTHING right for the blogging A-Z Challenge, other than daily posts. I dunno if I should've been using the Linky technology throughout or what!

  60. Ken, once we get them hooked, we're free to play even more!

Teresa, what an episode to start with!!!

Jay, this movie was good, the second one awful.

    Jen, yes it did.

    Thanks, Jeremy!

Christine, were you friends online first?

Dan, that was irritating she didn't see the ship.

Al, you are most welcome. So there will be two videos?

    Sandra, that made me chuckle.

  61. Ah yes, I remember gas at $1.15/gallon fondly. And Dark City. Though for me, The X-Files movie was somewhat forgettable (probably in part because I stopped really watching after season 5.)

    ReplyDelete
  62. I didn't like the X-Files movie. I do want to see the movie "Odd Thomas" and you just reminded me of that in your review.

  65. Loved the X files and watched every episode even the infamous inbred one. I have not heard about Odd Thomas but sounds intriguing. Now I want to see John Carter as I caught the last half hour of the film. I am bad that doesn't spoil it for me it just makes me want to see the movie or read the book more. 1998 was a fun year:) It was a year after I was married. We were happy and saving for my future home(It ended up being mine). hey-2nd time-fun year-yahooo!

  66. Odd Thomas looks interesting. Might want to see that movie.

  68. X-Files was great! But my favorite scary paranormal show had to be Kolchak the Night Stalker with Daren McGavin. Oh, that show freaked me out. Might have had to do with my impressionable age at the time.

OK I will go visit Jamie now! She reminds me of Helen Hunt.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I still love the X files and I liked the film too. I wish that show kept on going. *sigh* Maybe they'll bring it back.

    ReplyDelete
  70. What's so wonderful about your blog, Alex, is I know all these writers you talk about. That is special. Oh, and I loved X-files. On Friday nights I'd rush home from pizza restaurant to be home in time to watch the opening credits. I was about 30 minutes away. Won't tell you how fast I was going on country roads. shame on me.

  71. I was (am) a total X-Files fan. There was something very compelling about that series: the writing, the charisma between the main characters to name two.

Thanks for the shout out. Greatly appreciate that.

  81. I graduated high school in '98, and am proud I've never seen Titanic. It was so annoying how all the girls at my final high school were mooning all over it and seeing it over and over again. From what I've read, there are a LOT of anachronisms and historical inaccuracies.

Odd Thomas--one of my top ten books of all time. Yup. We saw the movie the day it came out. In the theater. I liked it, and it definitely incorporated many of the aspects of the book, but they did change a couple things. Dean Koontz is one of my all time favorite authors.

  100. I loved the Odd Thomas movie too! It followed the book very closely. Hope they make more Odd Thomas movies.

  101. X files were good fun. I love murder mysteries, Odd Thomas sounds good too. Goodluck with the battle of the clones, I'll be cheering the winner on.

  102. I became a fan of the X-Files by default because the one TV that most of us flocked to growing up was taken over by two of my cousins...who were die-hard X-Files fans. The music was creepy but it grew on my after a while. However, as much as I enjoyed watching the show, to this day, I still haven't seen the movie.

If I can recall correctly, those die-hard "X-Files" cousins of mine were disappointed in the movie, so I kinda ignored the big-screen adaptation since I figured if they didn't like it and they were hardcore fans of the show, then I might be better just sticking with the TV episodes.

I still want the Mulder and Scully action figures. I've been holding out on ordering them but would love to have them so maybe I'll get around to finally picking them up one of these days :)

I can't say that I'm familiar with Odd Thomas. I doubt I've read that or any of Milo's books. I don't remember much about 1998 except for maybe it following the death of one of the biggest rappers involved in the East Coast vs. West Coast beef that claimed the lives of two popular and influential figures in hip-hop.

  103. 1998 seems like just yesterday to me. What blew me away is the fact that Google started up that year. They've come a long ways in a short time.

  104. I was very into Third Eye Blind and Hole in 1998 musicwise.

And I only saw two of those movies listed!!

And I agree, Natalie is such a sweet, nice person!

  105. Great year for Al, but a bad year for X-Files. That movie was so-so.

  106. Moody, just say it - the film sucked.

Andrew, everyone was desperate for an X.

Cate, I hope they do as well.

Nicole, the first movie was good. Skip the second as it was aweful.

  108. Hi Alex!

    Al Diaz is great.

I remember seeing X Files in the theater. I was a HUGE fan of the show so when the movie came out I was first in line opening night. My friends and I used to "play X-files" in the fields and pretend we were hunting UFOs and all that jazz. Ahh, youth...

  109. Wow! Thanks for the A*W*E*S*O*M*E shout out, Ninja Captain! It was one of those days but you just made it all better :-) Getting married is definitely what I remember most about 1998!

  110. Wow, I think I actually remember the Broncos winning the Superbowl. I've watched a grand total of one in my lifetime and that was it.

I had no idea there was an Odd Thomas movie. To be honest, I wasn't too wowed by the book, but maybe the movie will fix the problems I found in it.

  111. Powertrip by Monster Magnet is a long-time favorite. Actually, it's a family-favorite, so we often play it in the car.

Last summer my older son was to a concert with Monster Magnet, and he was able to catch one of the drumsticks when they were thrown from the stage. As a good son, he gave it as a gift to me >:D

  113. I loved watching the X Files series, and another sci fi called Psy Factor. I like your post and will look out for Odd Thomas. Thinking of getting the book first. http://www.writer-way.blogspot.com

  114. Thanks for the recommendation on Odd Thomas! I might have overlooked this one otherwise.
And it's great to see Jamie Ayres on your blog. She's a really inspiring writer.

  115. I was going to try and comment before you published your posting. Maybe next time.

X-Files movie was something I've actually watched. I'm always trying to spot the different locations in Vancouver.

Nice shout outs. You are an encyclopaedia, sorry about the weird spelling, an encyclopedia of facts about so many. Xcellent stuff.

    1998, cannot remember anything.

  116. Definitely not a fan of X-Files (I thought it was really overblown). Love Monster Magnet and that c.d. seriously rocks.

  118. X-Files is forever. Saw The Mask of Zorro at Odean theatre before it closed down. I loved going there because they had an open roof and I could look at the night stars. Still miss it. Ninja or Bald Man? So hard to choose. Gee never thought I'd say that. A-Z is almost over and it has been a fun ride.

Oh and I realized I had the wrong link for the Enders Game petition. It has been corrected.

  119. Randi Lee, that made me chuckle...

    Jamie, you are so welcome!

JE, watch it and let me know.

Cold, damn good catch. I never catch anything.

Trudessa - beat! Heading to bed soon...

    Michelle, thanks for stopping by!

Gary, you comment before I post and we are calling Ripley's!

Sheena-kay, that does sound like an odd statement!

  120. Odd Thomas sounds interesting. And yay for Natalie, Jamie, and Al!!!! 1998 . . . the first year I went to a CreationFest three day concert event - super fun! And the last time I water-skied well - four months pregnant.

  121. I know this will come as a shock, but I have action figures of Mulder and Scully on my desk. Every few years my kids and I watch the alien mythology episodes in order. Loved the first X-Files movie, the second one was a dull thud.

  124. I am a huge fan of Anton-I can't wait to see it~

1998, I was leaving Florida-tired of all the hurricanes and humidity!
    lol-look where I ended up...

Natalie and Jamie sound really sweet! And who doesn't know the gifted dragon, Al~

  125. Today, I tried reading the fun facts to guess the year but couldn't keep the year veiled from my eyes. They were too quick! :D

  126. 1998 was a very good year -- I took my solo trek to Norway, and my husband and I retired and moved from Florida to Colorado. Both were great decisions.

I'm loving all these wonderful YA writers. They're producing so many excellent books!

  127. Love the X-Files. The first movie was more like a long episode and the second movie was total crap.

    My four cents.

  128. Good grief, I think I saw Titanic in the theater four times that year...and the fascination has persisted--since moving to London from the States over five years ago, I've been to Southampton three times and am still awed when I see that dock.

And relieved the UK didn't board the RMS Euro. May the GBP not go down with that ship...

In any case, go Milo James Fowler! I've been following his career since he was still an aspiring author, and my jaw just drops over all the stories he's had published. Truly prolific and terrific. Bravo on his new series.

  129. I haven't watched old school X-Files in forever! I need to break those out again.

  130. I never got in to Xfiles as much as I wanted to when it was on the air, but Netflix has fixed that problem.

  131. Jump to comment form...always use that function, duh.

Anyhow, I declared the fifth. How could I ever choose between you and my bald cyber brother?

I still don't quite get the Big Lebowski, but maybe I need to watch it again...maybe it will grow on me...like mold.

  132. I was such a huge X-Files fan! I think that was the first movie I ever went to on opening night.

  133. I was obsessed with The X Files--had there been DVD seasons released I would have binge-watched, instead I VCR-taped re-runs and scoured local video stores for dual-episode VHS tapes they had out of earlier seasons. I had to catch up, Okay? A friend somehow got me an enormous poster for the movie from the actual theatre, which I still have.

I think the show went downhill after season 5 but I stayed faithful almost through the end--I gave up on the alien love child in season 8, but have since completed the entire series and would like a T-shirt to commemorate (season 9 is rough).

  134. Used to love watching the X-Files, especially like the first film! I remember laughing at the cinema when Mulder was peeing against the Independence Day poster in the alleyway Haha http://www.deepfocusfilmstudies.com/the-x-files.html
