What is Blogging Success, Ninja News, Dredd Movie Review, Music Trivia Answers, and the Did I Notice Your Book Blogfest!

Today I have a guest post with the wonderful Karen Lange at Write Now. I answer the question – what is blogging success? Please visit Karen today for my take on success in the blogging world.

Ninja News

Laura Barnes got an agent – congratulations, Laura! AND she got a request from a publisher that she was able to forward to her new agent. How cool is that/?

Jeremy at Retro-Zombie is nearing 1500 posts and 500 followers and he’s hosting a giveaway to celebrate! Visit Jeremy’s site for details.

EJ Wesley is celebrating the release of his book, Blood Fugue, with the Bury the Hatchet Blogfest. Lots of amazing prizes! Runs until October 19. Congratulations on the new book, EJ.

Laura Eno’s new book, Wish, comes out next month. If you would like to help with her book launch, see her site for details. Congratulations, Laura!

Movie Review

Dredd

Forget that awful Stallone version! This film matches the feel of the comic book – it’s gritty, dark, violent, and bloody.
Dredd takes on a rookie with psychic abilities and their first assignment finds them trapped in a massive housing unit and at the mercy of gang leader Ma-Ma. (And they managed to make the lovely Lena Headey look skanky and vile.)
The visuals are very unique – colorful, in depth, and with lots of slow motion action.
The director pulls no punches with the violence. You will witness people die in a truly unique manner.
This movie isn’t for everyone. But if you enjoy the comic Dredd or science fiction shoot-em-ups and great special effects, then Dredd is your film.

Did I Notice Your Book?

The brain child of one awesome Ciara Knight! (With the Ninja along for the ride as co-host.) Based on her weekly feature that began last year. (And CassaStar was the first book!)

The Ninjas and Knights are joining forces!

Did I Notice Your Book Blogfest, October 17, 2012
Post about a book you’ve noticed.

You can choose a book that you’ve read, something you saw on a blog or social media site, Goodreads, or a sales website. Anything that caught your eye because of a great cover, blurb or reviews, but DON’T tell the author that their book has been noticed. Instead, shout out on social media sites, and encourage others to do the same, until the author finds his/her book.

Leave a blog comment at Ninja Captain Alex or Ciara Knight when the author finds their book.

Only two rules:
1) You can’t post about your own book.
2) The book shouldn’t be on the New York Times or USA Today bestseller list. This is your chance to shout out about a book that might not have been noticed by others.

Let’s blow up the blogsphere with great new reads!

Sign up below!

Excited about the contests and news? Anyone else see Dredd? Get any of the trivia right? (Kathleen got all of them!) And are you signing up for the awesome new blogfest?

Don’t forget to visit Karen for my take on blogging success!

  1. Okay, thank you for the shout out and the glowing review of Dredd, I am going to wait. People thought it was some type of remake when it was a totally separate beast. Which I cannot blame them for, because of all the darn remakes/redo/update films that have exploded on the screen.

I have only one thing to say "I’m Your Boogieman, yeah that's what I am".. but I am singing it like Rob Zombie...

Thank you again for a fabulous post full of ninjas...

    Your friend,
    Jeremy

  2. Wow, I'm early today. Although, Jeremy beat me to first. I'm so excited about the Blogfest it should be a blast! So many exciting things going on. Congratulations to Chrisine, Laura B. Jeremy. I can't wait for Laura Eno's new book! I'm glad to hear Dredd was better. Let's face it, it couldn't be worse.

  3. Jeremy, you are first! Yeah, Dredd did not do well in the theaters this weekend, which is a shame. And care to do a Zombie video singing that song?

Ciara, no way it could've been worse! Very excited for the blogfest.

  4. Hey,

Congrats to E.J. on his book and Laura on the double whoot with the agent and the publisher :)

I haven't seen either Dredd, but I do remember reading it in the English comics back in the 70s and it was fun :)

    Nov. 19, 2012 (Just sayin' :)

  5. Argh, another blogfest!! I'm going to have to consider this before I sign up - it takes so much time, and I hate to admit it but I've never visited the whole of the list in any blogfest I've joined... am I the worst blogger?? :-(

  6. You always have the coolest news. :)

  8. Why don't I see White Zombie covering KC and the Sunshine band? :)

Dredd sounds a lot better than the original!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Congrats to all the who have exciting news. Read about Judge Dredd on Mike's blog too. The hop sounds great. So many great books out there.

  10. I'm so relieved to keep hearing good things about Dredd everywhere. I was a huge fan of the comic books when I was a kid, and felt the sting of that Stallone version. I was bracing for a similar sting with this one, in fact, I was ready to ignore it altogether. Now that it sounds like they've done it right, I'll probably go see it.

Oh, nice blogfest! I like it. I'll try to make it ;)

  21. What a neat blogfest idea! I love your 'this week in the blogosphere/news/movies/ninja' format. It really does feel like I'm checking out today's blogging newspaper (which I totally need because I am in a constant state of pathetically-behind on current blogging events)Thanks Alex!

  22. Lots of exciting news today and places to check out. Signed up for the blogfest, it looks like another fun party!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thanks for the news, it's always awesome to hear other authors coming out with their books, gives me hope... (: Haven't seen Dredd, but can't wait, I just hope it isn't a disappointment. Off to check out your post, zooooooom...

    ReplyDelete
  24. I had figured that if you've seen one Dredd you've seen 'em all. Guess I might have to give this one a chance. I never read the comics

    ReplyDelete
  25. I really want to see the new Dredd movie just for Lena Headey...and maybe Karl Urban too. :)

And I'll have to think about that blogfest. Sounds like a good one that would make some authors feel great for a day.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I've entered your bloghop.

I know someone else that saw Dredd and said it was awful. I was surprised. But I'm a big sci-fi action kinda dude, so maybe I'll like it more than she did.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Lots of good stuff, Alex.

Katie, that's why I always feature news.

Charles, it's nothing like the other one. NOTHING.

LG, you won't see much of Karl, but Lena's appearance with really surprise you.

Jay, I think it's more of a guy flick.

  29. Ha! Blogfest. I'm in! My favorite remake is Seether's version of Careless Whisper (Wham).

    ReplyDelete
  30. Holy cow! There is so much going on. I have to catch up. Great things here, Alex.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Cool bloghop idea. I'll have to think about it before I join :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Congrats to Laura for signing with an agent. Having a publisher request to forward on was probably a double plus :-)

Yay to EJ and his book being out. Have to make sure to get my copy quick, fast and in a hurry.

And so many other things happening.

As for Dredd, I'll definitely think about giving it a try.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thank you for your comment 8-)

My mum liked the old Dredd movie so she might want to go see this one. Doesn't sound like something I'd like, but I'm sure my brothers would love it.

The blog fest sounds fun! I'm signing up!

  34. A blogfest from Alex and Ciara - totally cool! I love the emphasis too! Exciting news all around!
Didn'st see Dredd - saw a clip about how the blood was going to be in 3D slomo and I wasn't sure I was up for that . . .I usually like action flicks but that sounded like it might be too much for me . . .at least this last weekened anyway.
Visited Karen already and loved your post!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Another cool blogfest idea... :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Wahoo on all the good news for our bloggy friends! So happy for everyone. Hmm, although the blogfest comes at a busy time for me, it sounds too good to pass up, so I'm all signed up!

    ReplyDelete
  37. That's a lot of great news! I'm looking forward to the October blogfest. I'll be back to check out your guest post. Happy Monday!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hart, that's wicked.

Angela, if you can handle the violence, it's great.

Tyrean, glad you're on board. And the violence was very intense.

    Nancy, that's cool!

    ReplyDelete
  39. LOVE that blogfest idea! I'm totally in...just gotta pick the book...I have 38 I bought during the road trip...

Thanks for shouting out about our friend the Jer-Zombie! That man has some serious talent and deserves recognition. If you don't know him, go check out his stuff. He does amazing digital art, has a book on Amazon that he's dubbed "a coloring book for your mind" and it's amazing. It's called "Retro-Zombie Art and Words".

I'm going to watch Dredd. Loved the campy Stallone version, had to make my teenage boys watch it. I like really good movies, but there are times when watching a really bad movie is more entertaining because you can make fun of it the whole time.

Alex - sorry about this signature. This 2006 donor body can't handle <a href...sad state of affairs...

Oo, the blog fest sounds wonderful. I love that idea. October's just too insane for me, though.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Awesome news. It might be tough, but it would be great to get Dredd into my future schedule. :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. I love the sound of this blog fest! I signed up, hopefully I'll be up and running again by then. My computer is broken in half right now. :( Some stuff works some of the time, some stuff works none of the time. Blogger is one that works none of the time.
On the up side, I wrote over 6,000 words this weekend. Maybe I need to lose the internet more often! :)

  43. You amaze me with your energy, enthusiasm and your big heart, Alex! WIll you please send me some of whatever you are taking?

  45. Blue Monday is undoubtedly one of the great songs. The listen every Monday of my life. Greetings.

    ReplyDelete
  46. That is awesome news, Laura!!

    Great blog hop.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I have not seen Dredd, although I probably will. That looks like something my hubs and I would try to rent through RedBox.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I've just come from Karen's place... great interview!
Lovely idea for a blog hop!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Dredd sounds too bloody for me. I like that idea for a blogfest!

    Allison (Geek Banter)

  50. I loved Judge Dredd. I came in and told my boss about it. A co-worker who is conservative looked disgusted at my description of brains blowing out of people's skulls. It made me think...am I kind of a sicko? I don't know the answer to that. But I don't hunt and kill deer or gut animals for food, so I think that's less gross than watching Judge Dredd which is fake anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  51. We tend to stay away from movie remakes, they often aren't as good as the classics. Was waiting for someone to review Dredd. I think hubby is waiting for it to come out for rental first. :) Thanks for the review of it. I heard a review the other day that it was a horrible remake. :/

    ReplyDelete
  52. Oh drat. I promised myself no more blogfests until I was caught up on at least three other commitments. But this looks like such a fun one.

    Hopping over to Write Now.

    ReplyDelete
  53. What a cool idea for a blogfest! And I hadn't heard about Laura. Awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Just read Karen's interview. It was great. You're bloggertastic, Alex.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Tina, Jeremy is awesome! And sounds like you could be a big fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000 if you like to mock bad movies.

Rachel, sorry about your computer, but great progress on your writing!

Betty, Hot Tamales and lots of them!

    Leovi, that almost sounds sad.

    Michelle, thanks.

Michael, I couldn't handle the real stuff, but bring it on in the movies.

LD, you know you can't resist...

    Lydia, thank you!

    Wow EJ that was fast!

So glad DREDD impressed~! Yes, I remember the other lame attempt.

  62. I want to join that blogfest but I'm going to be on holiday. I'll try to check out the entries though. Also, I'm heading to check out your guest post.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Dredd is one of the best movies this year....so far!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Holly, thanks! I like that name. And I was honest about Dredd. It's good but the violence will scare some away.

Ella, Ninjas and Knights leading an army!

Andrew, just do it - you know you want to.

    Bryan, it is intense.

Clarissa, a holiday is a good excuse.

    Lurker, it was great.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Congrats to Laura Barnes! That's great news.

Dredd sounds good, but might be a bit gory. But I love the movie Running Scared, which is packed with violence and shootouts, so I think I can handle Dredd. Thanks for the review.

That blogfest sounds so good. Does it need to be a children's book? There's a really good time travel/steamy romance book I'd like to feature!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Ha! I was participating in the blogfest and didn't know it! I signed up, of course, although I don't think the author will find out on my insignificant blog about her book mention. (All Roads Lead to Austen)

    ReplyDelete
  67. What a fun blogfest!

I'm sorry now that we chose to see Resident Evil on Friday night instead of Dredd. RE was . . . a bit of a let down. It wasn't as good as the last one. I'm not sure I can say why, it just left us going, "meh." So yeah. Bummer.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Some great blogs to visit today and I loved the hop that Ciara organized! I have a few of those books I can mention, so I'll hop on board.

As to the movie . . . I'm sending the kids. They hold up much better durning gritty, bloody, dark movies on the big screen. Mom is usually crouched behind her popcorn.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Fantastic news going around! The new Dredd looks good.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Wonderful idea for a blogfest--just signed up. Congrats to the Lauras and other authors mentioned. And congratulations to YOU for your success!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Lynn, it can be any book!

    Rose, you never know...

Lee, you'd spend that whole movie crouched then.

    Thanks, Jennifer!

    ReplyDelete
  72. That's kind of a cool blogfest. I'll have to think about what book I've noticed. I'm off to Karen's spot to read your words of wisdom.

    ReplyDelete
  73. The last two blogfests I signed up for I ended up forgetting about. I think I need to pass for a while.

Stallone ruined the idea of a Dredd movie for me. I'll pass.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Thank you for the shout-out! And congrats to Laura, Jessica, Jeremy, EJ, and Laura Eno! Now you have me wanting to see Dredd. I watched the newest film in the Underworld series on Saturday. Meh. They jumped the shark in gothic style.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Dredd sounds amazing!! I did sort of like the Stallone version only because it was so cheesy and it was Stallone so I just enjoyed my popcorn and threw out all my brain power and just watched it zombiefied! Yay!

    Take care

    ReplyDelete
  81. Joined the Blogfest. Off to visit Write Now, now.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I might join this blogfest -- it sounds great, and yes Ciara Knight is amazing.

But Judge Dredd? Not my cup of tea.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Dredd sounds good! I still haven't seen Resident Evil or Expendables, which are on my to-see list, so I'm behind. I hate asking people to babysit, though.

Lot of ninja news today! I missed the trivia, but pretty sure I would have been wrong on all counts.

    Shannon at The Warrior Muse

    ReplyDelete
  84. But if I can understand what Dredd is saying, where is the fun in that? :) Just joking.

Lots of great stuff going on.

Off I go to Karen's blog.

    Laura, you're welcome.

    Shannon, that's why I don't have kids.

  89. Great idea, Alex and Ciara! I'm participating in the blogfest! I know a book that I discovered online and it's on my to-read list.

I read your guest post over at Karen's! Great tips and advice! I still measure my success by the numbers but I know it will change soon.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I can't wait to watch Dredd! It comes out om Sept 28 here, so I'll have to wait another 3 or 4 days to see it. Loved the trailer - it reminded me a lot of The Raid: Redemption, but with big guns instead of martial arts. It looks so my cup of tea!

    ReplyDelete
  91. Alex, I don't think Dredd is a movie for me because of the violence.

Did you see the one about the Franklin county (VA) moonshiners? I saw a TV program about them and it mentioned the movie. Then it sort of vanished. I can't remember the name.

so no on totall recall and yes for dredd, awesome!

congrats for the good news =) i hope i make your shout outs some day!

  96. *sigh* I never get the trivia right. Specific details are not always my forte... :)

    ReplyDelete
  97. *Hmmmm....where's that incredibly nice guy, Gary?*
Relax Alex, modest me has arrived...
It was with some um "Dredd" I watched that version with Stallone.
And now, to amaze and delight, I shall now leave one of my um 'coveted' comments over at Karen's site.
    Gary :)

    ReplyDelete
  98. Jai, all Ciara's idea. I'm just here for the Hot Tamales.

Thanks, Livia! And it's not about the numbers. It's the connections and what we can do with them.

    George, prepare for carnage.

Monti, sorry, no idea on that one.

    Tara, that's what Ninjas do...

Gary, the Stallone one was beyond 'Dreddful!'

    ReplyDelete
  99. I'm excited about all of the fun events coming up. Your guest post was well done also. I agree that success is what your expectations are

    ReplyDelete
  100. Dredd sounds cool; I like dark comics - like Unbreakable.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Congrats, Alex. I'm right behind you, a bit of wrap up stuff and off it goes to my critique partner. Wish there were more hours in the day!

    ReplyDelete
  102. You always have the best ideas! And this is a great one.

I love the Five Finger Death Punch remake of Bad Company!

  103. 1. Congratulations to both Lauras!
    2. Woohoo! Another blogfest. :)
    3. I'm on my way over to Karen's!

    ReplyDelete
  104. As a novice, I'm learning and your site and advice is invaluable, not to mention your blogfests. I'm still trying to figure out how you manage to do it, but once I get the house cleaned, and my sister's visit is over. I'm sure I'll figure it out. :) Seriously, I've never had so much fun, and sharing with others in the same boat during with the IWSG is so inspiring. Your new blogfest highlighting a new book is an excellent idea. I've read more new authors than the old favorites since being online. Sorry, didn't mean to write a book -- just trying to catch up.
    Have a great week!

    ReplyDelete
  105. Glad to hear the Dredd movie might be worth it. I like Karl Urban.
I'm signing up for the blogfest and going to visit you at Karen's.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I will wait for the DVD on DREDD, although for Karl Urban's career, I hope it does well. I hate they made Lena Hedley ugly in this one. I enjoyed her in THE CAVE. Great success for all those who found agents or have just published!

    ReplyDelete
  107. Glad to hear that this Dredd is better! Also- I love all of the great news. So many positive things happening out there. Congrats to all of those mentioned. The Blogfest sounds like such fun- I am off to check my calendar because I love the idea behind it and I have enjoyed Ciara's posts about books she has noticed. :)

Congratulations to Laura Barnes, Jeremy, EJ, and Laura Eno.

I love the idea of Ciara's blogfest. If I didn't have my own book blog tour in October, I would love to participate. But I will definitely retweet as much as I can.

  116. What an awesome (and thoughtful!) Idea, Alex! Love the Blogfest :)

  117. Ink, decisions, decisions...

Jamie, paint drying is better than the Stallone version!

Thanks everyone for joining the blogfest!

  118. Congrats, all!

And what a cool idea for a blogfest! Way to go, Alex and Ciara! :D

  119. Love, love, love your news flash! I signed up for DINYB on Ciara's blog, and am AMAZED to see my name over here (#31)...ah, the wonders of the modern age!

  120. Lots of exciting news. Love the blogfest idea. Now to choose a book . . .

  121. What a fun idea for a blogfest - I'll definitely look into that.

  122. DREDD!!!! Oh my. This sounds so good!!!! :) Thanks for the review!

  123. I live in a house of men, so it's just a matter of time before I see "Dredd", though I'd rather see the new Nick Spark's movie.

  124. Great idea for a book blogfest.

(from your previous post) I think it's fine to tell people they have word verif and that it is a hindrance in leaving comments. Some people don't realize it.

  125. Thanks for mentioning the blogfest, Alex! Love the concept for the DINYB fest as well.

Wife and I caught Dredd last night and loved it. One of the cooler visual films I've seen in a while, and the use of 3D was extremely cool and unique. Definitely recommend it. (But it is violent.)

  126. I'm seeing Dredd this weekend. Sooo excited - especially hearing that you gave it a thumbs up.

Cool blogfest. I'm always down to give a shout-out to some awesome books.

    ReplyDelete
  127. It took a long time, but what excites me is how many names I recognize on the bloglist. Like Karen Lange for instance, who truly rocks.

Dredd, eh? Can't be worse than the original, that's for sure.

I must be older than I think. I know none of the music trivia answers. (going off to stand in the corner)

  128. Woohoo, I love the news! I hope the Dredd movie is better than the old one.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Great news Alex. The first Dredd movie, while goofy and campy was fun. Not faithful, but fun. Too bad the new one bombed this weekend.

  130. Amy, really cool, isn't it?

    Lynn, go enjoy!

Mary, I have decided to do just that.

EJ, you're welcome! And visuals were amazing.

Joylene, I'm getting old, but still clinging to new music.

Maurice, it had such a disappointing opening...

  131. Your review of Dredd has my attention, Cap'n. Music trivia had me stumped ... this old rocker is stuck in the '60's.

  132. Ha! Hooked again. I love the idea of this "Did I Notice Your Book" blogfest. I'm in.

    ReplyDelete
  133. I am off to check your guest post, Alex.

    ReplyDelete
  134. I don't normally post on Wednesdays, but I'm in.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Another great idea for a blogfest!!!

    ReplyDelete
  136. Christopher, dude! Drag yourself out of the 60's.

Glad so many are on board for the blogfest!

  137. I'm back to work which means less time for reading, reviewing and blogging.

So I read the blogfest announcement with great interest but I'm unable to take part. Maybe I will find time to visit one or two blogs.

  138. I really enjoyed 'Dredd' as well. It erased the awful memory of Stallone's Judge Dredd. Urban did a great job. It was very violent though. I had to look away during a few scenes. And

Lena Headley continues to amaze me. She's so good. I hope she doesn't get typecast as a bad guy though. She's Circe in 'Game of Thrones.' She was excellent as Sarah Connor in 'The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

I have a book in mind for your blogfest, but I'm not sure if I should sign up. It's not on the NY Best Sellers list, but it was in the "also selling" section in June 2012.

  139. Lots of great news, as always Alex. Just signed up and Ciara's blog before coming here for the blogfest, sounds like a really great idea!

  141. Already signed up on Ciara's blog. So much good news going around. I'm thrilled for my writing buddies. :-)

  142. Edi, bummer!

MsMariah, sign up! And my wife averted her eyes more than once during Dredd.

CM and Misha, glad you are on board!

    ReplyDelete
  143. Wow...lots of exciting news. Congrats to Laura. I'm heading over to Karen's now. :)

What if I'm already supposed to do something on the 17th? Rat farts!

    ReplyDelete
  144. Alex...you really didn't like the Stallone Dredd??? Taco Bell and all? I guess I will have to see the new improved version.

You gave me a few new versions of great old songs to listen to...I have heard DT version of EJ and AL's version of Floyd. Couple others to check out though.

Irony? I am into reading David Foster Wallace right now and since he took the suicide road a few years ago I guess promoting him wouldn't exactly be a thing to do...besides I believe he had a couple best sellers. Great writing if you can get through it. The Pale King is my current read.

  145. I wasn't sure about Dredd. I thought it sounded a bit too much like Die Hard. But your review makes me want to go see it now.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Mina, do both!

Chuck, glad to turn you on to some new tunes!

Lynda, if you can handle the violence, go for it.

    ReplyDelete
  147. The blogfest sounds fun! Do I dare, when I'll be in the middle of a blog tour for my book release?

    ReplyDelete
  148. I have to admit...I do kinda want to see the new Dredd.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Your and Ciara's blogfest sounds awesome! I love book recommendations and can't wait to see what everyone gives shout outs to. :)

  150. All signed up for the blogfest. I'm always on the lookout for new books to read. Isn't it fabulous about Laura? Well, it's wonderful for everyone you mentioned too

  151. So ... I found Game On on two blogs, and Michael Pierce found his book on mine! :D
