Interview with Authors from We Know the Truth, Do You?

An Anthology to Celebrate the Raid

QUESTION: What is your number one favorite alien/Area 51 conspiracy movie?

Annie Walls (Author of Lavish Lure) - Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Nothing scarier than a quiet invasion that you can’t do anything about until it’s too late.

Beverly Ovalle (Author of The Road to Eden) - My favorite is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. I love a good comedy and this is funny and the action is great.

Cass Alex (Author of Them Versus Us) - Alien Nation (movie and series). I love the idea of what could happen after possible alien integration on Earth, when separate species try and live together.

Chrys Fey (Author of Detective Heavenborn) - Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been freaked out by alien movies. But I’d say Independence Day because of the Area 51 scenes. Those scenes helped me with my story, Detective Heavenborn.

C.L. Roman (Author of Not Your Father’s Area 51) - My favorite has to be Men In Black. I loved the first one and enjoyed the others mainly because of the acting and the human reactions to advanced alien tech.

Harley Easton (Author of In the Air Tonight) - The World's End - A ton of awesome British actors play high-school friends going on a drinking weekend, but the movie takes the unexpected turn of aliens invading a tiny town.

Jennie L. Morris (Author of Galaxy Genetics Inc.) - My favorite alien conspiracy movie is Signs. I thought it was well written, and having it centered around one family with little information about the world at large, made it suspenseful.

Jennifer Wedmore (Author of What We Became) - The only movie I can think of is Independence Day. I love this movie because of the epic speech to get them pumped about fighting aliens.

Arthur M. Doweyko (Author of P'sall Senji) - Independence Day - Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum save the world. The scene where we enter Area 51 underground hanger and discover we've had a working alien saucer all along is way fun. Add to that that the President didn't even know.

Sherry Rentschler (Author of Mermurings) - My first conspiracy series/movie seduction happened during the mid-1960's Outer Limits TV series. I always got the shivers when the TV went to the little white dot and we heard the voice say, "Do not attempt to adjust your set..."

Valerie Puri (Author of Burner Phone) - My favorite alien conspiracy movie would have to be Independence Day. It has suspense, action, and a fantastic cast to bring to life a plausible first contact scenario, albeit one that doesn't have a great outlook for the human race.

Don't bother with the raid. Stay home and learn all about it in the comfort of your own home.

What’s in Area 51? Is the government hiding aliens? Elvis? Maybe the set of the Apollo moon landing? Do you know?
We do.
Join this multi-genre group as they explore the hidden recesses of Area 51, which up until now have only been whispered conspiracies. Don’t bother with the raid. Stay home, read these awesome stories and learn all you need to know.
The truth is just a page-flip away.

*All proceeds will go to US Veterans.

Visit their website and purchase the book at Universal Book Links.

Review – Carnival Row

From the IMDB:
A human detective and a fairy rekindle a dangerous affair in a Victorian fantasy world, where the city's uneasy peace collapses when a string of murders reveals an unimaginable monster.
Orlando Bloom stars as the main character, and he’s someone you can root for – he’s a good person. Cara Delevingne is also intriguing as the fairy.
The setting is great. Something about a Victorian setting that just exudes magic.
I like that it’s a detective story with supernatural twists.
The production values are great. The makeup and special effects are first class. What I don’t like – zero humor. (You see that in a lot of shows now.) It just makes the show joyless. I can’t recall one smile or laugh in the five episodes I’ve watched. It’s difficult to go back for more when each episode is more depressing than the last. (There are eight total.)
If dark, deadly, and joyless is your thing, you’ll enjoy it. On Amazon.

CassaStorm Audio, The Magnificent Seven Review, October Movie Preview, Monday’s Music, The Witch Review, and New Releases

CassaStorm on Audio!

We saved the best for last! Not only is CassaStorm the best of the three books, the narrator did an incredible job bringing so many characters to life. He did a great job with Bassan and Pitan’s voice, and he nailed it with Cherzta, leader of the Vindicarn, giving him the perfect level of nastiness. (And if you want to know what it’s like to listen to this series on audio, Mason Canyon reviewed the first two books last week.) This one amazed me. I still can’t believe I wrote it…

A storm gathers across the galaxy…
The days of battle behind him, Byron now commands the Cassan base on Tgren. As a galaxy-wide war approaches the planet, he’s caught between the Tgrens and the Cassans. The declaration of war between all ten races triggers nightmares in his son, and the ancient alien ship begins transmitting a code that might signal the end of all life. And the mysterious probe that almost destroyed Tgren twenty years ago might be on its way back. As Byron’s world begins to crumble, he suspects a connection. The storm is about to break…

Find it on Amazon, iTunes, and Audible

And I have two copies to give away!

Movie reviews

The Magnificent Seven
This was just a really fun film!
They stayed true to the original storyline, which I appreciated. Seven gunmen/fighters come together to defend a town against an evil mining lord.
The leads all do a tremendous job in their roles. Denzel Washington is perfect as the leader, Chisolm. Chris Pratt has a ton of fun with his character, as does Vincent D’Onofrio, and Ethan Hawke rounds it out as Goodnight.
The scenery is stunning and the setting really feels like the Wild West.
The movie moves at the perfect pace, building up to the showdown at the end while giving the audience time to get to know and care about the characters.
And when that showdown comes, prepare for gunfire! Along with explosions, arrows, and some mean knife throwing.
This is just a fun, solid Western that fills all the squares. Very entertaining.
Highly recommended!

The Witch
Great buzz sometimes doesn’t add up to a great film.
This is a fairly interesting and yet depressing drama about Puritan life in the seventeenth century. The youngest son of a family living in the wilderness goes missing and the threat of witchcraft begins to tear them apart.
There’s constant, menacing overtones of something about to occur, and while there are a couple shocking moments, overall nothing really terrifying happens. In fact, far more disturbing than the witch are the young twins. (You’ll have to watch it to understand.)
The cinematography was beautiful and the acting very solid. The director went for authentic with the dialogue, which unfortunately makes it really difficult at times to understand the actors.
Interesting effort, but not the game changing film everyone claimed. (Although the creepy twins might stay with you a while.)
Marginally recommended if you’re looking for something different.

Monday’s Music Moves Me

Hosted by Xmas Dolly.

Evergrey continues to come out with great, accessible prog music. Released a couple weeks ago, their latest, The Storm Within, is solid from start to finish.
Today I’d like to feature the song Passing Through:

7 –

The Girl on the Train
A divorcee becomes entangled in a missing persons investigation that promises to send shockwaves throughout her life.

Stars: Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Jon Bernthal, J.K. Simmons
Stick around for the post-credit tax audit sequence.

Maybe Cruise can reach for a better film this time.

Director: Ron Howard

My wife and I are taking off Thursday for a couple days. Will check in when I can.

Insecure Writer’s Support Group, CassaDawn, Cassa Playing Cards Giveaway, Question of the Month, and Ninja News!

It’s time for another group posting of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! Time to release our fears to the world – or offer encouragement to those who are feeling neurotic. If you’d like to join us, click on the tab above and sign up. We post the first Wednesday of every month. I encourage everyone to visit at least a dozen new blogs and leave a comment. Your words might be the encouragement someone needs.

My awesome co-hosts today are Yolanda Renee, Tyrean Martinson, Madeline Mora-Summonte , LK Hill, Rachna Chhabria, and JA Scott!

We are kicking off with the question of the month today.

What's the best thing someone has ever said about your writing?

I’ve received some amazing comments, reviews, and emails. Many have just blown my mind. But one thing rises above them all.

Truedessa fell in love with Aden and Tamsin from Dragon of the Stars. I wrote the follow-up story, Dragon’s Destiny, for her. And then she told me.

She was writing fanfiction based on those two characters.

She loved Dragon of the Stars and Aden and Tamsin so much, she wanted their adventures to continue.

That just blows my minds. As an author, I feel like I’ve arrived. Someone is writing fanfiction based on my books.

Whoa!

And it really pleases me that it’s Dragon of the Stars. That book, and the final book in my Cassa trilogy, CassaStorm, are the best things I’ve ever written. And yet the other two books have sold far more copies. I wish there was a way I could change that. With Dragon of the Stars, there’s a free short story that continues the adventure. And CassaStorm remains my strongest piece, bringing Byron’s story full circle. (And there’s also a short, CassaFate, in the Heroes of PHENOMENA anthology that continues the story.)

But Truedessa loved my story enough to write her own stories about Aden and Tamsin. And that’s enough for me.

Don’t forget! Voting continues for the genre of this year’s IWSG Anthology Contest! Go HERE to cast your vote. Open through Friday of this week

Question of the Month

Hosted by Michael at A Life Examined

“What was the first book (or book series) you really fell in love with?”

Easy! Terry Brooks’ original Shannara trilogy. They sparked my interest in writing.

CassaDawn

CassaDawn is my short story that will appear in the anthology The Thing That Turned Me, available August 5.

Below is the very short trailer for CassaDawn on YouTube. (I contacted my publisher’s illustrator and hired him to make one that matched the rest of my series. It would've just bugged me if it looked different!)

Giveaway!

I have CassaSeries playing cards to giveaway!

I’m not a fan of Rafflecopters, but couldn’t think of another way to do it. You can enter to win by commenting, Tweeting, or reviewing one of the books. Winner will be drawn July 17. Cards will be shipped from my publisher.

Insecure Writer’s Support Group! Plus CassaFire Special, Ninja News, and Special Announcments

My awesome co-hosts today are Sheena-kay Graham, Julie Musil, Jamie Ayres, and Mike Swift! Please be sure to thank them for their time and effort to make all IWSG members feel welcome.

I’ve been working on another manuscript and after a rocky start, I have finally found my groove with the story and the main character. I’m also taking notes on things I will need to either adjust or add to the beginning.

And that’s really unusual for me. I didn’t make many changes to the last two books and the only thing I added was description. I don’t think I did much more than that with my first book, either. But with this story, I will be adding entire scenes. That will definitely stretch my writing skills.

At least it won’t mess up my chapters since dividing a manuscript into chapters is the last thing I do!

I do have a request for assistance today. I don’t ask for this kind of support often, but if you can help, I’d really appreciate it.

From February 4 – 10, CassaFire will be 99 cents at Amazon and my publisher’s site. This is the first time they have ever run a promotional special like this and have ads running at several sites, including BookBub. I’m the guinea pig, so hopefully the promotion rocks the house!
It’s also featured today at Kindle Books and Tips.

Below are some Tweets and the last one is for Facebook, blogging, or whatever. If you can help me spread the news, I would greatly appreciate it! And if you haven’t picked up CassaFire, this is a good week to do so. And bonus – CassaStorm was also reduced to $3.99!

Movie Reviews, Movie Trivia, Ninja News, and Cosmic Knighthood!

Something cool is happening at David Powers King’s blog today – the Ninja is now a Cosmic Knight! Check it out as we discuss teleporters, blogging, and Hot Tamales.

Movie Reviews

The Croods - 2012
A caveman family trying to survive as their world falls apart.
It was better than expected and had a good heart. Beautiful visuals, humor, and a good story about being willing to try new things. Probably the best film Nicolas Cage has done in the past ten years.
Recommended

The Sorcerer and the While Snake - 2011
A monk (played by Jet Li) tries to protect a young man from a thousand year old snake demon.
While the sets are colorful and lavish, the special effects fall short. So does the story, which is all over the map, following several characters. The movie isn’t sure what it wants to be – it’s too intense for kids and yet the dialogue and action are too childish for adults. I’ve seen worse, but I’ve seen a lot better!
Not recommended

Movie Trivia

Location, location, location! In what city or town does most of the action in these films take place?

1 – Rango 2011
2 – Tremors 1990
3 – Ocean’s Eleven 2001
4 – Doc Hollywood 1991
5 – Ghostbusters 1984
6 – Ferris Bueller’s Day Off 1986
7 – Ratatouille 2007

Movie Review

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
The journey continues as the party travels through Mirkwood and finally reaches Lonely Mountain.
As with LOTR, there is no saggy middle here. This instalment is a roller coaster ride, with the party encountering orcs, spiders, wood elves, men, and finally, Smaug. The best scenes include escaping the elves in barrels (also the funniest) and the encounter with Smaug, which is just stunning. We meet some new characters and are reunited with Legolas.
Jackson weaves in many things that will eventually lead to LOTR sixty years later, including a whole subplot with Gandolf that reveals the real evil behind what is happening.
And (warning/spoiler) the ending is a BIG cliffhanger! My wife literally cried out NO! when it ended.
Highly recommended!

There were also several previews – Nolan’s Interstellar, Edge of Tomorrow, 300: Rise of an Empire, and Godzilla.
While watching them, I realized that the Internet is a big negative sometimes. Online, we knew it was the teaser for Godzilla. But sitting in that theater, there was no clue until the end. People who hadn’t seen it online got the full impact, the big Wow, it’s Godzilla!! It’s a shame the Internet has ruined the surprise for us now.
That said, seeing that teaser on the big screen was SO much better than online!

Special CassaStorm Update

Last spring, Kimberly Gabriel at Art of Infiltration asked if her middle school classes could interview me. It was a lot of fun, and we just did it again for her current classes with CassaStorm. The students’ questions were really thoughtful and genuine, and I tried to respond in kind. This is the email I got from Kimberly:

They LOVED your interview. They said you seemed very genuine. Both of my classes said they "felt like they knew you" after reading your answers. We had a great discussion about your answer regarding themes and symbolism in books and whether authors deliberately create them. We also talked quite a bit about reading outside of your genre.

I can't thank you enough for answering their questions!! They also loved the bookmarks! Thank you for those too!

My writers really liked your advice to write what you want to read too.

Kimberly

Thanks again, Kimberly!

What Works – Online Marketing Symposium

The first ever "Online Marketing Symposium" Monday, January 20, 2014. A blogfest with information you can use!

Hosted by Arlee Bird, Yolanda Renee, Jeremy Hawkins, and Alex J. Cavanaugh.

Do you ever wonder why some books become bestsellers while others can barely be given away? Why some businesses succeed and others fail? How does a blog post or a YouTube video manage to go viral? Is it a matter of luck or is there some magic formula for success?

Well, now maybe we can latch on to some of the secrets and tricks that make success happen or what we might want to avoid. We want you to tell us your stories of success (or not so successful) as we present a blogging event that will help us learn.

On event day you tell us about a marketing idea that you've used and what worked or didn't work. Your post could describe a campaign that succeeded in a big or small way or one that failed drastically. Tell us about a business campaign, an organizational event, a fundraiser – anything where a bit of promotion was necessary!

The What Works.. Marketing Symposium is not limited to authors but also to anyone in a business that has a promotional aspect – online or otherwise!

It's possible the blogging community can help you make that next project a viral success or that next book a best seller!

Join our first ever Online Marketing Symposium – sign up below!

Want one of those guitars? Did you see The Hobbit? Want to win a book? And what marketing tip can you offer…?

My last post this year will be for Mark Koopman’s Fifty States of Pray on Christmas Eve. Mini-Alex might even be part of the celebrations…
