1. A Perfect Murder (1998) Director Andrew Davis - Michael Douglas, Gwyneth Paltrow
A wealthy man, Michael Douglas, discovers that his wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, has a lover. He blackmails the lover, Viggo Mortensen, into murdering his wife.
Turns out not to be so perfect after all. Great high tension-ending.
2. Seven (1995) Director David Fincher - Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman.
A rookie detective, Brad Pitt, and a veteran detective, Morgan Freeman, hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his motive.
Shocking end!
A young FBI cadet, Jodie Foster, is sent to meet with a serial killer, a real madman, Anthony Hopkins, to help solve another case.
The quid pro quo is excellent!
4. Psycho (1960) Director Alfred Hitchcock - Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh
A remote motel. A young man, under the influence of his domineering mother. A woman just looking for a night's rest.
Talk about the wrong place at the wrong time. Excellent scare factor.
5. Body Heat (1981) Director Lawrence Kasdan - William Hurt, Kathleen Turner
The wife of a wealthy man, Kathleen Turner, manipulates William Hurt into killing her husband. The heat in this one is extreme.
But a magnificent twist means another great ending!
Wheelchair-bound and bored, Jimmy Stewart begins to spy on his neighbors. After a while, he's sure that one man has killed his wife. High tension as he sends his girlfriend to investigate because he can't! Hitchcock at his best.
7. Vertigo (1958) Director Alfred Hitchcock - James Stewart, Kim Novak
Jimmy Stewart, a former police detective, suffers from a fear of heights. When a woman kills herself by jumping from a bell tower, her death, due to his inaction, haunts him. When he meets her look-a-like, his sleuthing skills re-emerge.
The ending is supreme.
A man escapes prison, changes his looks, and goes after the man who killed his wife and framed him.
I enjoyed the way this was done, and those two together, nothing better!
9. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) Director David Fincher - Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara
A journalist, Daniel Craig, is hired to find a woman who disappeared forty years ago. He enlists the aid of a young computer hacker, Rooney Mara, to help him.
This is one tangled web of awesomeness!
10. Laura (1944) Director Otto Preminger - Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews
This movie is my all-time favorite. The police detective, Dana Andrews, falls in love with a woman, Gene Tierney, via her portrait while he's investigating her murder.
The way the romance was weaved through the story got to me!

Do you enjoy watching a character grow from one story to the next?

Some have already gone through the virus - Sherry Ellis’ family all had it and recovered.
Some are in a bad situation - Lynn and her husband are trapped on their boat in Mexico and while they are both high risk, they can’t get tested.
Some have found something uplifting – Louise posted a short video by Chris Hadfield, a retired Canadian astronaut, and his view on how to handle isolation.
I think my favorite was by Em-Musing. She said she was doing what was necessary, but what wasn’t necessary was thinking the worst and getting scared. She’s lived through the polio outbreak, the Cuban Missile Crisis (and missiles set to fire at Cuba were just a couple miles from her home), having her first child during the Hong Kong Flu and no one could visit her at the hospital, and all the other viruses and scares. So while she is concerned, she refuses to be scared!

This is a new show on Amazon Prime.
Every episode revolves around an underground facility called The Loop and those who work there and live above it. It also covers several different time periods, as The Loop has been around for quite a while.
The first episode moved glacierly slow, but fortunately it was really interesting.
The cinematography was amazing. Really well done.
Based on the paintings of Simon Stålenhag.

ReplyDeleteI love murder mystery movies and have seen 8 out of the top 10 listed. Gwyneth Paltrod and Michael Douglas are favorites of mine, and A Perfect Murder, a modern remake of Hitchcock's 1954 film Dial M for Murder, is deliciously wicked.
Yolanda, it's fascinating how Alaska informs your writing and provides a backdrop for Murder, Just Because, a captivating story, I'm sure.
Whenever I think of Whitesnake my mind immediately skips to actress/model Tawny Kitaen. Married for a brief time to Coverdale, Tawny appeared in several of Whitesnakes's iconic 80s videos. The slinky vixen turns age 59 a few months from now.

I've seen 4 of those movies, but could probably watch them all. It's remembering they're out there when I'm looking for a new movie to watch, that's my problem! I love thrillers.

Congrats to Yolanda and her new release. I have seen all of those movies, except for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I still remember walking out of the theater after seeing Silence of the Lambs a bit shaky, it disturbed me greatly.

ReplyDeleteI saw Vertigo and have to admit, it took me weeks before I completely suppressed it. The others I did not see. I do remember the promotion for The Silence of the Lamb with Anthony Hopkins and said immediately that film was not for me.
I can see this series with Stowe and Detective Quaid turning into a film. I wish that for you, Yolanda.

I also highly recommend the book version of Silence of the Lambs. It's a page-turner. So is Harris's other Hannibal novel Red Dragon, which they made a movie out of called Man Hunter.
ReplyDeleteLynn and her husband live up the road from me on their boat. They're both very resilient. But it doesn't hurt to send them good thoughts.
I was happily surprised at how many people wrote uplifting g stories and refuse to be panicked. Right now I am concerned about my hubby’s niece who is a nurse because she is experiencing the symptoms. She is getting tested and should find out soon. The movies chosen are all excellent and loving her choices. I would choose all of these but I would include Leave Her To Heaven where the beautiful Gene Tierney will stop at nothing to keep her man. It really is a horrific scene that grabs you even today...I won’t tell you more and, remember it is from 1947(8) so it is ok but still... you stay safe.

Joylene, Manhunter was an excellent rendition of that book.
I love the classic gangster movies from the Thirties and Forties, though I don't think they'd be considered murder movies. They're more about many murders being committed as a matter of course, not one murder or murderer taking canter stage in a crime story.

ReplyDeleteThat's a great list of murder movies. "The Perfect Murder" is an excellent pick. Two other old movies that aren't vintage film in this category to consider are "Double Jeopardy" with Ashley Judd and "Deceived' with Goldie Hawn, both are excellent and I highly recommended them if you haven't them already.

Like some others, I haven't seen any of those movies (though at least heard of most of them). I recently saw and enjoyed "Knives Out" (once I'd got over Daniel Craig's forced accent). The concept and plot twists were breathtaking.

ReplyDeleteI've been getting through quarantine by keeping my nose to the grindstone on editing my upcoming book. That and by avoiding worry by concentrating on what I can control and not on what I can't.
Would you believe I've never watched any of those movies? Horror/murder movies do not make me happy. I avoid them at all costs. :)

I've seen eight of the movies listed by the awesome Yolanda Renée, including some of my favourite Hitchcock films. Rear Window has to be a favourite murder mystery for me, and I'd add some of the best Agatha Christie adaptations, especially Murder on the Orient Express (1974 version perhaps). I'm also a fan of Name of the Rose - Sean Connery in that and MotOE not a coincidence.

Roland, Hitchcock is the star, I loved the 1974 version, compared to the latest one to come out. We saw it the other day and found it almost boring.
Seven freaked me out in the theater years ago - a little more gruesome than I usually like.

I share many of Yolanda's favorite murder movies. So many are classics. Who could ever forget Psycho? Or Rear Window? Great. I wish Yolanda well with her new murder mystery. And yes, Covid-19 stories veered between terrifying to uplifting. There'll be plenty more before this is over.

My wife and I watch a lot of murder movies including all of the film on Yolanda's list. I've been wanting to see Dark Passage again since we recently watched a more recent film with Lauren Bacall and my wife wanted to remember what she was like when she was younger.

Personally, I put my trust in Jesus and don't worry about these earthly issues. I can think of far worse things happening to me than what the left believes will happen to us.

I think of myself as someone who likes to be entertained and laugh when I watch movies, therefore, I was quite surprised to read your list, as I have seen 8 of them, and enjoyed most of the ones I saw, although Seven and Silence of the Lambs were just a bit too disturbing for my taste. Great list. I can't think of any others that would be better than these.

Looks like I'll have to give In Tales From The Loop a try. I'm watching The Feed right now and despite poor reviews, I'm finding it quite interesting. I hope they have another season because they can do so much more with it.

For some reason my comments don't work on my blog, but I'll be moving soon so I'll fix it then I'll let you know when. I watched Victor Mature last night too in that B.C. moving. It was really good. It was like watching a movie in another language, but they were really good making up words and showing emotion with their face/bodies. Dam sure am glad I didn't live then. hahahaha Hope everything is still okay with you my friend. Have a nice weekend with your family. I truly hope people take advantage of this time to get to know their children and spouses. I pray for all my friends every night and rest assured my friend you & yours are in my prayers. Be safe!

ReplyDeleteI've seen some of those movies. I still have nightmares from Psycho and the Alfred Hitchcock movies. Silence of the Lambs was terrifying. Love Jodie Foster. I need to see the Michael Douglas one. I must be a glutton for nightmares or something. Great post. All best to you!

ReplyDeleteAs for the movies, "Silence of the Lambs" and the sequel "Red Dragon" are on my list of great murder movies. "The Mentalist" is my favourite murder series.

ReplyDeleteI'm more of an action, comedy and romance movie person so don't really have a favorite murder movie. Though I have seen Silence of the Lambs, Psycho and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how I missed this great post. I've never seen the Daniel Craig version of Girl with the Dragon Tatoo but the original was really good. I hope Yolanda's tour has been a success. I haven't started Tales from the Loop yet, but it's up next after Locke & Key.
