Black Panther Review
First off, I really did enjoy the film.
However, I am confused by the over the top superlatives and praise. The movie I saw didn’t redefine the super hero genre nor was it different in tone or style from the other Marvel films. The focus was less on the super hero than the man, but that was seen in Iron Man III.
It is a very fun film though. It’s an origins story, not of Black Panther but of T’Challa becoming king.
T’Challa and the Black Panther are actually the least interesting characters. His sister and general more than made up for this though. All three female leads were great. It was also fun to get behind the scenes and see all the tech of Wakanda.
As far as villains, I liked Killmonger, but he was a little too two-dimensional – all hard edge with no compassion.
Overall I enjoyed it. Not my favorite but another strong entry into the Marvel universe.

A group of college friends reunite for a trip to the forest, but encounter a menacing presence in the woods that's stalking them. A UK movie filmed in Romania.
A review of this at Cinemarvellous sparked my interest.
Lately NetDlix has been dropping some interesting films. This one is built around the framework of a very clichéd plot device in horror movies – the old hikers lost in the woods. But here’s the amazing part – this one actually works.
I can’t say much about the film without spoiling it. It went places I didn’t expect it to go, which was refreshing. Kudos to the director and cast. A scene involving an overnight stay in a cabin is really disturbing. The film builds layers of tension and dread.
Overall, I found it to be a very effective genre film.

17th Annual Golden Schmoes Movie Awards - the voting is now open!
The 17th Annual JoBlo Movie Awards (aka The Golden Schmoes) is in YOUR control, so hit the booth and cast your votes! Final voting runs from Tuesday, February 13th through Wednesday, February 28th, with winners to be announced on Friday, March 2nd, just ahead of the Oscars!
Warner Bros. reportedly held a test-screening of James Wan's AQUAMAN last night, and Batman News was able to speak with several of the people who attended. Keep your salt shaker at the ready, but the reaction towards the film, which is obviously still in an unfinished state, was quite positive, with it being described as an "emotional action movie" with elements of humour and horror as well. Compared to WONDER WOMAN in tone, Batman News says that AQUAMAN will also include STAR WARS-like underwater battles and a few scary monsters.
AQUAMAN will hit theaters on December 21, 2018.
Aquaman is my favorite superhero and I’m really looking forward to this one!

Hopefully Aquaman turns out more like Wonder Woman. Black Panther is just getting played up more because of diversity. It is the best thing ever because of it, blah blah. Not to say it's not a great entry, but yeah, some others were just as good if not better.
ReplyDeleteI just added 'The Ritual' to my list on Netflix (and scared myself in the process, ha!) Reminds me enough of Blair Witch (which I enjoyed when it came out) enough to think it may work for me, although I'm not usually a horror fan.

ReplyDeleteI'm staying out of the theaters and enjoying the variety of Marvel and DC television series currently available. I recently started watching Supergirl. Mrs. S and I both love it.
My eyes began to roll when you explained that The Ritual is about a group of college friends in peril in a cabin in the woods. However, if the film actually did succeed in avoiding cliche, then I am eager to see how the story was handled.

Shady, they really did it right, which was refreshing.
I hada feeling Black Panther was not the most inventive and best comic to film flick ever made. It is getting all the kudos mainly because it is African Americans mainly cast in all the roles. I’m glad that the film has this diversity and is not the Blaxploitation films done in the 70s and I hope more films come out with mainly an African American cast that is not about rap, gangs etc... but a film about , well, whatever. I am so happy about my country doing so well at the Olympics. We did so well in figure skating especially now that it is much more difficult for the judges to cheat. We did great in ski cross, bobsled and ski jump stuff..hahahaa can’t think of the name where they do fancy flips etc.. As for hockey, I think we might have been too cocky and that always effects how one plays but the women should be happy with the silver for heavens sake. The men should be happy with the bronze but what I am surprised about is the German hockey team...German...wow:)

My nephews saw Black Panther on Thursday. They are half Asian and half African American. The first thing my oldest nephew told me when I asked if he liked it was...well...yes...and then, "Almost all of the people in it were dark skinner!" :) That's why it's redefining the superhero genre. I'm excited to see it, but I don't see movies until they come into my local libraries. lol
ReplyDeleteI will definitely check out The Ritual. Have you watched Dark yet? It's a series that involves missing children so it gets compared to Stranger Things, but the mood is completely different--much darker even though the gore/scares are comparable. I actually like it better than Stranger Things.
ReplyDeleteBlack Panther... on the super-hero end of it, felt sort of pushed as if they were like "hey it's a super-hero film, blow something up"... the women dominated the screen... I was taken out of my life, put into this one... I agree the KillMonger was able to make amend of the situation he was put into, but chose to be more angry... until the end. Several of the Marvel films villains, play off as weak...

I enjoyed Black Panther. Especially the women. Loved Princess Shuri, Nakia and his general Okoye. Some of my favorite scenes were with them in it. Couldn't get enough of Shuri and T'Challa together. Can't wait for the other super hero movies coming out later this year.
ReplyDeleteI've always been a big winter Olympics fan, but this year some things fell flat for me. I did enjoy the half-pipe snowboard competitions at the beginning and all the ice skating, but that's about it.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Black Panther. The tone was noticeably and (according to the director) deliberately different from other Marvel films. Much more serious, with less humor than recent Marvel offerings. I suspect that's one of the reasons it's getting such praise. It's not my favorite Marvel movie, but it's not the worst one either. I'd watch it again.
ReplyDeleteI saw Game Night this weekend. I wasn't sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. The pacing never flagged, and there were so many twists you were never sure what would happen next. Heck, I was still half expecting another twist during the final credits.
That's a lot of movies. I haven't seen any of them. As usual. I enjoyed the Winter Olympics but was disappointed that the figure skating (my favorite) was shown at later hours and I did not see all of them. Have a great week.

I saw the previews of Black Panther, but I wasn't really jumping to see it. Maybe I'll reconsider. I hadn't heard of The Ritual, but I might be up for a good horror film experience. Thanks for the reviews.
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way about Black Panther. The women did steal the show. I'm adding The Ritual on my Netflix list! I watched a little of the Winter Olympics, but I used the time to catch up on other shows. Almost all caught up on my Drunk History episodes now!

There are so many movies I want to see, but I never get out and see any. Probably because I'm not fond of our local theatre and the others are too inconvenient to drive to. But I did watch and enjoy the Olympics.

ReplyDeleteBlack Panther gets and over-the-top review from me because of all the strong women in the movie. I think it was fun and visually entertaining, too. It may not be my favorite of all superhero movies, but I really loved it and appreciated the way T'Challa worked with his team.
ReplyDeleteWinter Olympics ... just wow. I am totally blown away and amazed by those athletes and loved seeing the snowboarders all hugging each other after events - no matter who received high or low scores.
We just saw Black Panther this weekend - I definitely enjoyed it but as you say it wasn't anything 'redefining'. It still made me laugh and it was visually stunning. I agree the female leads were fantastic! Loved the interactions between the king and his sister.

ReplyDeleteMy girls both enjoyed Black Panther. Me, I have been loving the Winter Olympics. At one point, pre injury, both my girls were national athletes, and many of their former teammates and former competitors and former people they trained with overseas were in these games. So it was super fun for us. One of my girl's former teammates even got a medal. I knew three of the people who carried in Flags. I love the Winter Olympics!

ReplyDeleteAs far as Black Panther is concerned my daughter (who is The Night Owl Mama/her blog) went to see it on the Red Carpet with other blockers (guests of Disney), anyway she loved, loved, loved it for some reason or other & she took all three children to see it. My youngest grandson says he now has a new superhero! When she went to see it downtown evidently there was some discrepancy between a black family & her family and sly remarks were passed because my daughter was white and her family was the only to applaud because they liked the movie so much. The woman got out of hand & my daughter decided she wanted to explain. When she did & explained about going to the red carpet and all & how she met some of the actors etc. The woman apologized to my daughter & said she'll think twice next time. My daughter told the whole story on FB. I thought that was rather cool & wanted to share. Have a great day my friend.

I went to see Black Panther this past Saturday. We were stuck on the bridge to Canada for 2 hours to do so! Worth it. Although, I had a little breakdown during the Han Solo trailer because my brother was a huge Star Wars fan.

ReplyDeleteWe saw Black Panther and could see it as an intro to an addition to the Avenger crew and then Justice League. I enjoyed it. But, I kept expecting Andy Serkis to be the ultimate villain and then he wasn't.

ReplyDeleteI'm not into superhero movies, but I did observe (while seeing the excellent Darkest Hour movie) a few Black families/couples take photos in front of the Black Panther display, and I surmised that this movie means a lot for people of color who feel underrepresented in Hollywood.
I saw your earlier comment about skipping the Oscars due to political nonsense, and I totally agree. I used to host an Oscars party but I have no interest in watching this year.
Black Panther is on my list to see, though it's not super high. Most likely, it'll be something my husband and I rent, due to the inability to make it to the theater regularly. But hey, we just bought a cuddler couch, so watching movies at home just got more comfy!

This will probably surprise you not at all, but hearing Aquaman is hitting the horror spots a bit makes me even more excited to see it! I watched a movie on Netflix about a group of friends that went into the woods together and lots of things happened as a result of their journey. It was well done, and I think that may be the name of it. See what happens when you watch a movie with a migraine? :)

ReplyDeleteTook my boys to see Blank Panther on President's Day. I'm not into all the superhero movies, but enjoyed this for what it was. I did enjoy the movie and it was different to watch a movie with a positive portrayal of the mostly all black cast. That's where I believe most of the praise comes from. It was a welcomed change.
ReplyDeleteI was looking forward to your review of "Black Panther." We haven't seen it yet, but we plan to see it soon. I think some of the excitement about the movie is that it features a black superhero, and it's the same kind of excitement we saw when the first black baby dolls were sold and the first black actors appeared in positive TV roles. I think it's a good thing and long overdue.
ReplyDeleteWe watched a lot of the Olympics, and I especially enjoyed the figure skating and the snowboarding events. I went to bed and missed it, but my hubby was over-the-top excited about the Canada-U.S. women's ice hockey final.

ReplyDeleteBlack Panther...hrrm. I loved this movie for being what it was: a big budget entry for yet another iconic comic book hero. But it's popularity and why it was amazing actually have nothing to do with the actual story and everything to do about how difficult it is in Hollywood to achieve such a spectacle with an all-black cast. It feels weird to be writing about this in 2018. But there it is in a nutshell. I hope that other black superhero movies get made to the point of where it's nothing special anymore. Then maybe things can be judged more or less on their content and less by how difficult they were to bring to world wide audiences.
The same thing is going on with A Wrinkle In Time I guess. The black director (she directed Selma) wanted a black female main character with a white boy (Levi Miller) following around a black girl through the whole movie. She said publicly that it is important to see that: a white boy following a black girl around and who would be hopelessly lost without her. I suppose I'll never understand, but okay *shrug. It looks like a good movie and I already have tickets.
My husband and I are planning to see Black Panther. I think it is getting a lot of attention because of the ethnicity of the characters. I hear so many rave reviews about it on the radio.

Your review of Black Panther makes me want to see it. I'm never quite sure when I see over-the-top praise if I'm really going to like a movie or just regret buying into the hype. I like when I see normal reviews which demonstrate that people like it, even when they don't gush.

ReplyDeleteI loved the Black Panther. His sister was my favorite character. It was iconic for reasons other than the story, but the story was very good. It was a richer story than usual, which is why I liked it so much.

I haven't seen Black Panther yet, but my son is a Marvel Obsessive said almost exactly the same thing as you about it. I check out the Ritual. I love parts of the Winter Olympics but there are so many events where Americans weren't even in the running and that lessened my interest.

But I'm glad that you think the women leads are so strong and interesting -- that much I know I'll enjoy. Anyway, movies like The Post and Darkest Hour are much more to my taste, stodgy old lady that I am.

I once had a roommate called The Schmoe. Last name Smolerik from Rochester NY. The three of us simply referred to Dave as The Schmo. But never as Dave.
My son saw Black Panther and loved it. Said it was at the top of his Marvel list, even nudged out Wonder Woman (for him at least).

ReplyDeleteThe hubbub around it was just unnecessary, but a complete product of today's society. All talk and no research. The 'I must post my opinion, which is always right, on social media and pick fights wherever I can, cause I'm right" mentality is so frustrating to watch.
