Chrys Fey and Tsunamis
I’m not as big of a movie buff as Ninja Captain Alex, but I love disaster movies! Movies like Deep Impact and The Day After Tomorrow mostly used tsunamis for visual effects. They wanted the audience to be amazed by the grand size, but they don’t really get on ground level, in the perspective of people, specifically people caught in the water.
In The Hereafter, there is a tsunami that sweeps away a woman. We get to see what happens to her, and it is shocking, but I personally felt that the water was way too fast. Yes, a tsunami is fast and fierce, but the speed of the one in this movie didn’t seem right to me. And the water is clear, whereas it would’ve turned dirty from everything it picked up on the ground.
The movie that is super realistic is The Impossible, which is based after the Thailand Tsunami of 2004. You have to see this if you haven’t. I took notes when I watched it the first time. Actual notes. It helped me to figure out what it’s like to be caught in a Tsunami, and what would most likely happen following one. We see Naomi Watts beaten by the water. We see a second wave. And we see the destruction. It is done so well. You will watch the tsunami scenes in absolute terror. I did.

Movie Review - Midnight Special
The film is slow paced but not dull. It was super intriguing from start to finish.
It’s not an original story, but it’s wonderfully told. The director pulls everything together really well and on a really low budget. It’s engaging, thought-provoking, and truly a well-told science fiction tale.
And the science fiction is a very small part of the story. It’s part drama, part chase, and part science fiction.
Starring Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, and Adam Driver, who all turn in great performances. (And where else are you going to see Superman’s General Zod and Star Wars’ Kylo Ren in the same film?)
On NetFlix – highly recommended.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Chrys Fey that big budget, blockbuster, FX-laden disaster movies tend to show tsunamis consuming city skyscrapers but fail to depict the phenomenon from the POV of a person caught in the turbulent tide. Naomi Watts is my favorite actress and I agree that the film The Impossible captured the terror of her ordeal very effectively.

I didn't remember any of the taglines, but I had seen three of the movies: Armegeddon, The Day After Tomorrow, and Dante's Peak. Of the three, I liked Armegeddon the best (I have that one on DVD).
ReplyDeleteI'm hopeless with taglines even though I've seen most of those films. Midnight Special sounds interesting and the plot line reminds me of my first (unpublished) novel in some respects. I recently saw The Impossible on Netflix and the special effects were terrifying. After watching the real waves on YouTube, I agree with Chrys. They did a great job capturing the horror.

ReplyDeleteI always like a good tsunami. Well, film version that is. The Impossible was an excellent one. I enjoyed the "making of" feature on the DVD that showed how they created the effects. Neat stuff.

Like you, Chrys, I love disaster movies, even if they're hokey and the "science" is terrible. Watching the live videos from the 2011 Japanese tsunami was horrifying ~ definitely an eyeopener for me. ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid, tsunamis were referred to as "tidal waves," and I don't think it was common knowledge that they were caused by earthquakes. Everyone looks at me like I'm nuts when I say that whenever the topic of tsunami is part of the conversation (more often than one would think). That's not just me, is it?

ReplyDeleteChrys has it right, only The Impossible does a realistic and terrifying depiction of a tsunami. Not only the wave itself, but the aftereffects in a 3rd world country where entire villages were washed away and medical assistance was few and far between.

Another anthology to purchase - yey! :) Once I've done my Masters degree, I may have beat my nerves enough to at least try to submit. I have a year or so to build my courage. :)
ReplyDeleteMy hubs just looked up Midnight Special and it apparently lost millions at the box office? Still, I trust your recommendation so I'll give it go. Box offices rarely reflect quality.
