Movie Review – Bone Tomahawk
This can best be described as an arthouse Western/horror film with drama.
Some might be frustrated by the slow pace. (Remember my review of Slow West?) However, I enjoyed the slow burn. By the end of the film, I was really invested in the characters.
It has some funny moments and all of the actors do an amazing job, especially Russell and Jenkins.
There are only a couple bloody horror scenes, but be warned – they are graphic. (As a dude, I really cringed at one scene.)
If you have to have a lot of action, skip this film. If you like a slow pace and watching the characters and story unfold at a leisurely pace, then I recommend this one.

Fortunately, no dancing is involved. I get to pick the theme for today.
After deciding that Scandinavian heavy metal music might be too limiting (not to mention scare the crap out of the other participants) I chose the theme of Movie Soundtracks.

You might not like the music, but the video has a great message.
Pantera – Cemetary Gates (Tales From the Crypt – Demon Night)
Great song, and probably their most accessible.

Tails for Vets!
Tails of the Apocalypse is a collection of dystopian/post-apocalyptic stories featuring animals and features a story by E.E. Giorgi.
Samuel Peralta, who produced this anthology, paired with Pets for Vets, an organization that matches shelter dogs with military veterans. Pourteau plans to donate $1.00 to Pets for Vets from every copy of Tails of the Apocalypse sold through the end of the calendar year, regardless of format‚ e-book, paperback, or audiobook.

This one is easy. Introvert. However, I’m not a shy, awkward, don’t want to deal with the world introvert. I’m a musician who performs on stage and an author with several books published, so I have to be extroverted to some degree. I enjoy people and certainly enjoy this online community of friends. But I prefer to stay more in the background and let others take the spotlight. I’d rather ask questions and learn more about people than talk about myself.
Of course, my home is my castle and sanctuary and still the best place to hide!

This one could sneak in and be a cool gothic thriller for the holidays. (Fingers crossed.)

Hi Alex - Bone Tomahawk actually looks like one movie I might enjoy - being an arthouse type film. Spectre has got some great reviews ... someone unexpected said they'd even go again ... I'll get to see it sometime. John Barry's music as in Out of Africa always draws me in ... Bone Tomahawk is not my type of movie, however, The Night Before sounds like one I might enjoy. I am more of an extrovert than an introvert.

ReplyDeleteI never would've pegged you as an introvert. I see you chatting people up just strolling down the street but I can relate. I am social but only to a certain degree. I have a number limit. Too many people in one room and I tend to clam up. Zip goes my mouth. About fifteen people and I'm good. Higher than that and I turn shy. But I'll start a conversation with anyone.
My son and I plan on seeing The Night Before when it hits the theater. Looks stupid and ridiculous. My kind of funny.
Bone Tomahawk if a tad slow may attract certain types. Hank is a bit impatient prefers comedy better. Introvert in a sense. Tales for Vets and Sam is involved, bless him and for a good cause too! Congrats for the writers!

Extreme sings one of my all-time favorite Christmas songs, Christmas Time Again. The lyrics are a little lame, but I love the music to it! It's been remade a couple of times, but nobody does the keyboard drama like an 80s band!

Another person here looking forward to The Peanuts Movie. My son doesn't like movie theaters, but I'm hoping to bring him to this one. I'd like to help him get accustomed to movie theaters so we can all go see The Force Awakens next month.

I think Bone Tomahawk might appeal to me too. I like the idea of Tails for Vets, I wonder if anyone has thought of doing that for Canadian vets. Funny, when one says vets in England, we mean veterinarians and for the military they are always referred to as veterans. Took me a while to get it sorted when I emigrated.

ReplyDeleteActually... none of these movies pique my interest. As I get older and older I seem to be moving farther and father away from violence and explosive special effects. Same with the music, I want peaceful stuff, stuff that soothes my soul.

ReplyDeleteHi, good buddy! Congratulations on hosting another exciting Battle of the Banned. Your final score nearly matched mine this time and I was pleased to see that Dokken prevailed. I enjoyed the other metal anthems you posted recalling the inspired pairing of Bill and Ted and Beavis and Butt-head along with Tales From the Crypt. Pantera performs the style of music that most pleases my ears these days. Pantera heavily influenced one of my current favorite bands, Butcher Babies.

That's like my personal motto. I love being outgoing in public, but at the end of the day, I just want to retreat to my castle, put on some sweat pants, and play on my computer in the dark.

I'm definitely an introvert. I've performed in plays and have no trouble with public speaking, but large gatherings wear me out. I need my quiet time.
ReplyDeleteI did go to see Crimson Peak last week. You were right about the house being a character all by itself! As a gothic mystery, the first half of the movie was the best part, in my opinion. Once the bride arrived at Crimson Peak, the plot began to fall apart. I guessed THE SECRET immediately, then had to cringe as the plot holes piled up. But watching the house completely entertained me and made up for bad writing.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm definitely an introvert. I can appear in public and speak to groups professionally with ease -- formerly as an educator and now as an author. But if someone I don't know asks to meet me for lunch -- panic time! And if I attend a party (which I tend to avoid) I definitely hang back in the corner with my husband or seek the one person I know at the party and cling to them like glue. Then I go home and don't leave the house until I've recovered!
I would totally watch Bone Tomahawk. Reminds me of another western I saw several years ago: The Missing with Tommy Lee Jones. Victor Frankenstein appeals as well.

The other movie I really want to see is Room. I'm an introvert but I can talk to anyone - so a mix depending on the situation. Like you, I'd rather listen and can ask the right questions. I think we're all a mixture of intro- and extroversion. But the artist community probably understands as well as anyone the need to retreat into a solo world. Cuz that's where we make our best connections.

I love the idea of matching vets with shelter animals. These vets could really benefit from the love and companionship of an animal, and too many animals are in high-kill shelters and denied the chance to find their forever families.

I'm quite familiar with Extreme's "Play With Me", as I have the Bill & Ted soundtrack. I can't hear the song without thinking of Genghis Khan rampaging a sporting good store, Billy the Kid trying to walk on ice with his buddy Socrates, Abraham Lincoln and Sigmund Freud running from the cops, Beethoven rocking an Electric Organ to the amusement of mall shoppers and irritating the store manager. And of course Joan of Arc doing her jazz aerobics. Can't forget that one.

ReplyDeleteWell Bone Tomahawk and Victor Frankenstein appeal to me. I like a remake told from a different perspective if it's done well. I've always been an introvert, but am much less so than at an earlier age when I was just a smart and arty nerd.

You must be an extroverted introvert, Alex. It's a thing I've been told. It's introverts who can go out and be social, but in the end recharge by being alone as opposed to crowds like an extrovert.

I enjoy a good western and wonder if this is a western or a horror film. Love Kurt Russell though. I am not a heavy metal gal so , when I think of film music, I think of Star Wars (especially the one where Q-Tip and Obi Wan duel it out with the red faced guy) and Dr. Zhivago. I have done studies through conferences about Introvert/Extrovert etc... and each time I am 50% extrovert and 50% introvert. This makes sense to me because , when I want to talk, I do and am an open book but if I am not in the mood, I will hide away and pretend I am not even home. I love James Bond so I will see this latest installment. I have no desire to see the Seth Rogan film or the nice Dinosaur.

My only thoughts this November is NaNo and Thanksgiving - my goal is to finished by then. Ha, ha - sorry, I'm teasing the month is full - too full, but still NaNo comes first!
ReplyDeleteNot a big fan of gore, so I think I'll have to skip Bone Tomahawk. And we knew The 33 was coming when it happened. It was going to be a movie sooner rather than later.
ReplyDeleteLots of excellent new releases in books - and movies. I'm looking forward to Bond, even if I have seen it all before. Those are still fun movies, and there's usually some kind of semi-troubling theme that's interesting to talk about afterwards. I'm an introvert who likes to sing on praise team, teach classes in writing, and chat now and then - which means, I'm good with "social" time for about three hours and then I wilt and hide in a corner. :)
ReplyDeleteI'll see the Bond movie, although I understand Craig says he'll not do another one...I do get tired of one new Bond after another.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely an introvert. I can get out there and do stuff in public and enjoy talking to people (but prefer one-on-one), but I don't like parties and large crowds. And I do really enjoy my alone time with a good book.... Social media was created for people like me, I think, because I can connect while hiding behind my computer.

Wow, Kurt Russell looks very different to what I remember him. I'm interested to see Daniel Radcliffe in another acting role. I have the same thing where I enjoy performing for people, but unlike you I cherish the spotlight ;)

ReplyDeleteI am that type of introvert sometimes, at least the awkward and "don't want to deal with the world" introvert. Of course, "the world" would mainly involve disgruntled patients at my job. I am very good at blending into the background unnoticed, like a ninja :)

ReplyDeleteI'm glad you mentioned Bone Tomahawk - I just saw a small reveiw of it and I'm dying to see that one. It sort of reminds me of Ravenous. Kurt Russell is one of my all time favorites; he sealed the deal with Tombstone.

ReplyDeleteI used to be that painfully "shy, awkward, don’t want to deal with the world introvert." Because I perform for an audience, I've learned to manage it. I always say that I'd be quite happy to perform with a paper bag over my head. LOL
I also prefer to stay more in the background and let others take the spotlight.
Hi Alex! ok, I'm so curious about the scene everyone is talking about in 'Bone Tomahawk.' I keep hearing about it. I am of course afraid to watch it now but my curiosity requires that I find out what happened that grossed so many people out!

I do like the live version of Play With Me on YouTube when the band was older. Video sucked except for the kitty shredding on the lead guitar toward the end. Rock on Extreme. Rock on.

I'm definitely one of those introverts who hides from the world. Bone Tomahawk sounds like something me and the family will enjoy. Also, they will like The Good Dinosaur too. They love any movie that includes dinosaurs:) Have a great weekend.
