Today I have not one, but two awesome authors here to amuse you!
SAME GEEK TIME, SAME GEEK CHANNEL
I'm adding a level of difficulty to this quest: I'm going to give you a type of show and the obvious nerd answer. Then I'm going to give you a show that you might not know about.
Documentary:
Obvious answer - Cosmos hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson. Who doesn't love Neil? He's the laid-back astro-nerd in a ship of the imagination.
Not so obvious answer – Globe Trekker hosted by Ian Wright. There have been other travelers on this show, but Ian is my favorite. Goofy, geeky, and hilarious, he travels to various places in the world where you get a peek at things other shows usually don't show.
Reality Show:
Obvious answer - King of the Nerds hosted by Lewis and Booger from Revenge of the Nerds. It's like Survivor for geeks, but with more video games and cosplay.
Not so obvious answer – Face Off. Artistic geeks creating awesome makeup for monsters, aliens, or whatever might be that week's theme. These are super talented nerds in their element.
Sitcom:
Obvious answer – The Big Bang Theory. This is probably where everyone's mind went when I mentioned TV and nerds. No explanation necessary.
Not so obvious answer – Community. It's by far geekier than the obvious answer. Oh yes! Watch it and compare. And it stars Joel McHale, a geek whom I loved since he hosted The Soup.

I love the movie Splash, Charity. I've probably watched it 50 times or more.

ReplyDeleteIt's SO funny--I'm watching Community on Hulu Plus while I'm reading this! I tried watching before and it lost my interest. I do have a hard time paying attention...I'm not sure why. There were some laugh out loud moments, but I get easily distracted away from it...

I read an article that said Big Bang characters could be anything based on the formula, but I like them being nerds. When I understand a nerdy thing they do, I get so happy. lol

My parents are constantly watching Big Bang Theory, though I'm far from the only person who lost respect for the show because they have Mayim Balik. She's well-known as anti-science in real life, such as her embrace of homeopathy and anti-vaccine propaganda.

Thanks Christine and Charity for two fun posts. The BBT is my all time Geek favorite. One I really enjoyed many years ago was Kenneth Clark's "Civilisation." It was my first eye-opening look into art, architecture, and philosophy (outside of books) which I hadn't seen much of because I grew up in isolated areas. As for fantasy romantic movies ~ It's got to be the Starz Outlander series based on Diana Gabaldon's books. Congrats to all the authors of new books! Good luck juggling all your responsibilities, Alex! I don't know how you do it!

The Big Bang is an awesome show, its really neat.
ReplyDeleteCharity my favorite sci fi flicks are: Star Trek IV The Voyage Home, Terminator 2, Star Trek Wrath of Khan, Galaxy Quest, I Robot, The Time Machine 1960, Aliens 2, Star Trek Into Darkness and lots more.
I'm guessing a Kargrandes is a sentient interstellar space creature capable of traversing the galaxy.
I do watch a few of these programs, but I'm old enough to remember the origin of the word "geek." I bet you know it also. But if you don't and are looking forward to a nice chicken dinner, don't look it up.

My curiousity about the Kargrandes is increasing day by day. Whatever they are or whatever it is, it sounds interesting. Alex, how did you stumble across the name kargrandes?
ReplyDeleteAs geek goes, there's no doubt that community is a whole other level of geek beyond The Big Bang Theory. The two together are like smart geeks vs average geeks.
ReplyDeleteI love the movie Timer, but I was reently surprised by a movie called Upsaide Down. It's not going to win any awards, but it's a good story.
