The Babadook Movie Review

A single mother battles her son’s fear of a monster and her own pain.
This movie has been getting a lot of press, so I decided to check it out on Pay-Per-View.
The result is a mixed bag. It has great atmosphere and some really tense moments, but there is a lot of confusion. Starting with where does the Babadook’s book come from? What was up with the tooth? What did it all mean?
Just what is the Babadook? A real evil presence or all in her mind as she tries to deal with past trauma? I’m still not sure.
The kid was annoying as well. He needed a shrink or a bop upside the head. Preferably both.
However, should things not work out for the Babadook, he has a great career making children’s pop-up books ahead of him!
Dodgy.

Mini-Alex and the Turkey

Thanksgiving decorations are appearing at my house and Mini-Alex was conned into appearing with a turkey:

And for those of you who are new and wonder why I have a miniature version of myself, it was the creation of Elise Fallson two years ago. She made Mini-Alex, posted pictures of him for the Cheersfest, and then graciously sent him to me. Deniz Bevan then knitted a scarf and sent it to him. Thanks again, ladies!

Mini-Alex would still like a Mini-Kate someday.

And to give credit where credit is due, my wife comes up with most of the ideas for the photos.

Music Sample

Yes, many of you have told me you want to hear me play. I know I’ve drug my feet on this. I think I am more nervous about sharing my music than I am my writing. I’m such a perfectionist and I want to post something both amazing and flawless for you. I promise I will pick something soon and work on it until I am comfortable recording it. Might take a couple dozen recordings, so be patient! Never rush a perfectionist with a guitar…

Entering the giveaway on Goodreads? Has anyone else seen The Babadook? Nominating someone for Karen’s awards? Ready for Monday’s blogfest? Get any of the robot movies right? Ready for Thanksgiving? Anyone else care to hound me about my music?

I’m not posting on Wednesday (work promises to be hectic) but I will be back on Monday!

  1. Really, a Mini Kate? Well, somebody is perverse enough to provide. This is the blogs, ya know.

Man, I was sure hoping to win a review copy of the Dragon book, love dragon things. Oh Well, Congrats to Michelle.

I'm so far behind on things. I've been getting ready for a T-Day bash.

    Later Dude :)

  2. It's sad the Goodreads-giveaway is US and CA only. :(

  3. Awesome how good your book is doing on Goodreads. And would love to hear you sing when you're ready.

    ReplyDelete
  4. This is my favorite cover yet!

I finally saw "Edge of Tomorrow" because of your rec. :) Very good! And I'm not a Tom Cruise fan (maybe that's why I liked it so much?)...

    ReplyDelete
  5. Maybe a Mini Alex and Mini Kate could look at the book What the Dinosaurs Did Last Night. (Toy dinos come "alive" and get into lots of trouble every Dinovember during the nights.) I'm sure they could find inspiration from that!

    ReplyDelete
  6. That Babadook movie looks and sounds intriguing. Your new book has such a cool cover!! I like it!Mini-Alex and the Turkey rocks!!!

  7. Fantastic post on Milo's site. Persistence is key. Hm, maybe I'll have to wait on seeing The Babadook with all those inconsistencies. I saw Maleficent on the weekend and I really enjoyed it. Beautiful rendering. I think if I get a good week of writing in, I'll be prepared for the Thanksgiving visits. Have a good week!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Congrats to you and Dragon of the Stars! And congrats to Michelle, lucky lady. :) I've voted and now I've got to get back to my writing trenches.... :)

  9. Love the decorations and mini-Alex. I'm still trying to catch up with everyone I missed during my computer melt-down. Not joining in any reindeer games right now, but soon.

Congratulations on Dragon of the Stars! And I am looking forward to hearing you play- don't worry about it being perfect, just let it rip!!

  10. I have a few Thanksgiving decorations up - a couple of the pumpkins make an easy transition from Halloween to Thanksgiving. :)

    ReplyDelete
  11. I for one would love to hear you play :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Well at least you gave your wife credit. The cat gets the credit for the litterbox one though lol

Sounds like a rather strange and skippable movie.

  17. Already voted... and entered the giveaway by mistake. Didn't realized it was just for US and Canada.

Your wife has very good ideas then!

You love the hard life. Want more bugging, I see. And here dragon and dwarves say, what are friends for if not precisely for houding ninjas? Ah! Dwarves are DELIGHTED with the idea. They are organizing shifts already. Three a day will suffice? Nah, I say four. No need to thank. Bugging you is all my pleasure! *Cheshire cat grin*

I mention some upcoming movies, on my blog for tomorrow, which I really want to see.

Work getting in the way of your blogging, I didn't think the Ninja permitted such things to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Karen, get in line!

Hart, thanks. And I know! RaShelle rocks.

Thanks, Heather! Maybe I should do a Christmas song...

Jo, I try not to let it happen, but must pay the bills.

    Lauren, thanks!

Melissa, my wife says the same thing.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Entered the Goodreads giveaway. Never heard of The Babadook and probably will never see it.

I'll probably miss the "Miss You Blogfest" unless I find excess time while I'm away from home. I'm not sure what the next few weeks will hold for me other than a grueling redeye flight tonight that I'm not looking forward to.

If you play a cover maybe I'll enter it in Battle of the Bands. Look forward to hearing your playing.

    Bob, thanks!!

Brandon and Bryan, that was good.

    Ellie, thank you!

    Donna, glad you're excited.

  54. Congrats on making the GR list! Think I'll stay away from the Babadook movie. Unanswered questions & the confusion will just frustrate me to no end. Your mini-Alex is just like Flat Stanley! My kids took pics of that thing all over the Midwest:)

    ReplyDelete
  55. Congrats on making it on the list, running over to vote!

Mini Alex looks totes adorbs . . . riding the turkey? lol And I would love to listen to your music, Mr. Perfectionist. I'm sure we'll love it ;)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Congrats on the joust win and Goodreads Alex! That Babadook movie sounds irritating.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I am pretty certain it is universal. We would all like to hear you play...

    ReplyDelete
  61. I got 1 right-I got a fail. At first I thought Mini Alex was riding the turkey:) Soon enough he will be surrounded by Poinsettias or pine needles:) Can't wait to hear you play

    ReplyDelete
  62. Wasn't Eve the name of some other robot in something else, too?
    Darn, I can't remember...

    ReplyDelete
  63. Tell your friend Andrew that Eve is my name and I'm not a robot! I did enjoy Wall-E though. My name gets used for many things. I think there's even an electric car out there...anyway, congrats to Michelle!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Definitely entering the giveaway and looking forward to your music sample!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I watched The Babadook too a couple of days ago and was also disappointed. It's obviously well-directed and I loved how the child keeps rooting for his mother and loving her despite her madness. That was really touching. Talking about madness... I believe it's all in her head. The book is just a normal one like any other and the child was afraid of it, just like any kid would. Then the mother starts having hallucinations because of the stress and lack of sleep and traumatizes her child even more. I don't think the end should be interpreted literally either. (SPOILER ALERT) It's not a real monster she's feeding (you don't see it), but she has learned to tame her own madness (imaginary monster). At least, that's how I see it.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Voted for your book on Goodreads, but can't see how to tweet the giveaway. Any chance you can put up a copy and paste link I can slap into a tweet?

    mood

    ReplyDelete
  67. A bob upside the head, eh? Haha. I've probably told you already, but BladeRunner is one of my all-time favourite movies.

  70. Thanksgiving is coming up so quickly. Just got all the non-perishable items today. Guess I better dig out the decorations and start making it look more festive around here too. Congrats to all mentioned here today! Don't think I'll be checking out the movie...thanks for the review.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I understand the not-rushing-the-guitar player thing. I'm a perfectionist, too. And it's so hard to get everything just right in a recording. There's always something just a little off. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Just take your time with your guitar Alex. I wasn't a big sharer of my poetry and now I'm doing a series in verse. Just let time flow naturally. Your wife has excellent ideas and Mini-Alex is looking good posing with the turkey. Rashelle is a legend, so I'm definitely checking her out on Wednesday.

    ReplyDelete
  73. You are now a most-anticipated author! Ooh, la-la. :) :)

  76. Jennifer, yes he is!

Elephant's Child, it does seem to be universal...

    Andrew, probably...

    Eve, that made me laugh!

Vanessa, that's how I interpreted it. I guess she made the book herself since she did say she did children's books at one time.

    Moody, I will do that!

Angela, that was great of her to post it.

    Sherry, YOU understand!

    Suze, thanks for the chuckle.

And thanks to all who voted and entered!!

    ReplyDelete
  77. You totally need a mini-Kate. Just think of the shenanigans you can create!

    ReplyDelete
  78. I don't know if the world is ready for Mini-Alex meeting Mini-Kate! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  79. I won't hound you about your music but I am looking forward to hearing it. I completely understand the phrase, 'perfectionist with a guitar'.

I was surprised by a package on Friday, which since hubs and I were making the rounds of specialist for him, I didn't get to open until very early Saturday morning. What an attention grabbing cover on your new book. Love the color combo. I can't wait to start it. Hubs teased me about treating it like gold and yet I didn't open it and glance at the opening chapter but put it back in its envelope. I told him, I'm in the middle of a book and if start reading this one I won't stop.

    Congrats, Alex!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Babadook seems to be mysteriously intimidating. That can create lots of fun.Mini-Alex is a great companion to have. It gives a personal touch. Certainly good to give it its own companion in Mini-Kate. A Partnership with Mrs Alex is such a great boost. Thanks Alex!

  110. Congrats to Michelle! Nope, haven't seen the movie - wasn't and still am not planning on it either. I thought it was going to be a calm Thanksgiving until all sorts of relatives started calling yesterday, asking if they can visit this year. Yay?
Curious about your music now ;)

  111. Any movie with an annoying kid is one I'll gladly pass on. too bad, because the premiss sounded interesting.

YES, I would love to hear your music. Please post something soon, but not too soon. I'll be out of town next week for Thanksgiving.

BTW. Have a great Turkey Day!

  112. Yes, Alex Mini wonderful autumn! I love them!

  113. Keith, I should send you the link to Elise's post about him.

Thanks, Ella! Mini-Alex would appreciate the real thing if at all possible...

Thanks, EE! Yeah, Milo has comments turned off. Never give up on a book though, because just just never know...

    Elizabeth, just on Twitter, right?

Faraway, we are of the same opinion. Don't worry, won't be next week.

  114. You can tell your wife that I always enjoy the pictures of Mini Alex and where he pops up next!

  115. I would love to hear your music!

I also look forward to reading RaShelle's interview. A million books, wow!

  116. Ninja FALL Alex. I like it! Babadook sounds interesting... How did I miss that one? I don't even remember seeing a movie!

    ReplyDelete
  117. I hope you're doing well Alex! I don't know if I can see that Babadook film. It sounds scary. I finally saw Snowpiercer, and I have to say I was thoroughly impressed with that film. Congrats on the giveaway! I'm thrilled for your new release.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Of course I entered the Goodreads giveaway! Mini-Alex looks ready for Thanksgiving!

  119. I feel it was rather remiss of me to have not made a comment about hearing you play. As probably the only blogger who HAS heard you play, hurry up and record some music! You rock and ARE amazing. There. I've gone and said it :-)

    ReplyDelete
  120. Ava, I will!

Stephanie, it's an Australian film, so not getting a lot of press here.

    MsMariah, Snowpiercer was very original.

Ellie, thanks! Yes, you are the only one...

  121. Congratulations on your five-year blogiversary!

  124. Saw Big Hero Six this weekend. CGI was very good, but the story was a bit too linear. Could have added a twist here or there.

BTW, I entered the Goodreads giveaway. good luck with Goodreads.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I entered the Goodreads contest and I voted. You're doing pretty good at #3!

I'm looking forward to hearing the music sample when you've perfected it. ;)

  126. Sorry I didn't catch your post on Monday, Alex. Congrats on Good Reads! Wow! I voted and entered the drawing. If I should win, I'll definitely write a review. I'll probably write one anyway! I've got to get cracking on Monday's blog fest. This is such a busy time of year! CassaStorm and Max Blizzard landed on my doorstep last night. I finally squeezed in ordering them along with Through Black Spruce. Fortunately, no matter how busy I am, I DO get reading in every night. Have a good one!

  127. Whew! Huge congrats to Suzanne. Definitely need to go vote on Goodreads. Yay!

  128. Congrats on the goodreads list. And congratulations on the release of another book. I would love to hear you play your music. I'm sure you will blow us all away. Being a perfectionist isn't such a bad thing. So far, everything you've created or put your mind to has been a success. I look forward to hearing your music, eventually.

  129. Sheri, I think the cover is rather awesome as well.

    Ken, agreed, and thanks!

    Loni, thank you!

Fundy, thanks, and I hope you enjoy CassaStorm and win Dragon.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Congrats to you for being high on the Anticipated list and to Michelle for winning the giveaway! I knew a few of the answers to the robot questions and had a couple of Oh, yeah moments when I read the answers. And I did enter the giveaway. Now I'm going to check out the small press post.

  134. Only thing I'm really doing for Thanksgiving is the work potluck tomorrow; nothing happening here for the holiday. But I'm baking two pies to share with co-workers, so that should be good.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Love that cover and title, Alex! Congrats on the Goodreads nomination!

    ReplyDelete
  136. I wish I had a mini version of me. Then again, we are talking about ME. If there WAS a MINI version of me, you wouldn't be able to see it.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Thanks, Mark!

    Thanks Lori!

Mason, we had our work potluck this week as well.

Al, technically, you shouldn't be able to see mine...

  138. Happy Thanksgiving to both mini Alex and big Alex! :)

  139. The movie sounded odd. Can't join in on memes at the present time. Blogging's taken a back seat unfortunately while the moving mayhem continues. Today is furniture (stuff from Dubai) delivery day!

    Have a great Thanksgiving X

  147. Greetings human, Alex and Alex and....

Still not sure how you do it, my human friend. I still wonder if you ever sleep.

So many links and so much to take in. It does overwhelm my doggy brain almost as much as it overwhelms my human, Gary's brain.

I went and read RaShelle's article on IWSG aka...it had lots of neat info. Of course, I had to add my amazing thoughts about writing, such as not writing to an audience.

How about a "No More Blogfests Blogfest"? What a concept!

Pawsitive wishes, my kind human friend.

    Penny

  148. Okay, from the first time I learned you play the guitar, I've been hoping you will share your music with us. If it is anything like your writing, everyone is going to be inspired and blown away!!

    ReplyDelete
  149. I've missed so much! congrats on another book!!! Going to add it to my goodreads now :D

    ReplyDelete
  150. I haven't seen the Babadook yet, but I intend to. I can understand being uncomfortable sharing your music. I'm more wary of sharing my writing than my photography.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Love the cover. Jack the Ripper sounds (or looks) like an interesting story.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Star Trek shirts! I have a couple of people I could gift those to.
Oh dear, I hadn't known Old Kitty hadn't posted in a while! Hope everything's okay. She was on my list of 'hey you haven't visited these guys in a while' blogs
