Invasion of the B Movies! Plus Insomnium Album Review and Ninja News

Insomnium – Shadows of the Dying Sun

This Finnish, melodic death metal band just gets better and better. I was a huge fan of their last album, One For Sorrow. This one is definitely a progression of their music, and expertly balanced beautiful and brutal.

I’d list the standout tracks, but there are too many to mention. The music is soaring and epic. The singing wavers between growling, screaming, and singing, but it never overpowers the music.

These guys are HUGE in Finland, and their albums shoot to the top of the charts every time.

If you want more from your metal, check out Insomnium!

Invasion of the B Movies!

MsMariah posted a link to this blogfest, and it looked like fun. Hosted by Girl Meets Cinema, we are to choose a super cheesy blockbuster B-rated movie, post why we love it, and include pictures.

My choice – Deep Rising!

What’s not to dig about this over-the-top horror-monster thriller? A group of hijackers have chartered a boat and intend on robbing a stranded cruise ship, but giant, deep-sea creatures have got there first…

There are so many great one-liners and funny dialogue. Treat Williams and Kevin O’Connor are both hysterical.

In a scene where O’Conner and Wes Studi are being chased by the giant creatures:
Studi: The only way to slow ‘em down is to feed ‘em!
O’Conner: FEED ‘EM? The only thing I got is a wet stick of gum and a breath mint!

Famke Janssen is sexy (of course) as Trillion the thief.

The film is also unbelievably gory.

Directed by Stephen Sommers, Deep Rising is a fun, cheesy popcorn flick!

Have you listened to Insomnium? Participating in the A to Z Road Trip? Excited about new books? And what cheesy B film do you really dig…?

I am back to my Monday only (with IWSG Wednesday) schedule now. I will also be taking some time off during the week from blogging while I complete and edit my current manuscript. If I miss anything awesome, please send me an email! And yes, I did enjoy a few days off this past weekend.

And I just found out this morning from Nancy Thompson that CassaStorm was nominated in Science Fiction for the eFestival of Words 2014 Best of the Independent eBook Awards!!!!

  1. First! Never seen Deep Rising, but I imagine the Famke comment goes with, well, comment.

  11. Congrats on CassaFire selected book of the month and for CassaStorm being nominated. Deep Rising is loaded with laughs for a horror flick. It's one of my favorite B movies to watch. Now I'll have to pull out my DVD and watch it again. :) Congratulations to all those with new releases and cover reveals.

  15. Deep! Rising was pure cheese - just right to go with the popcorn. Excellent choice. However, I'm going to have to go with Tremors. "I've been deNIED critical need to know information! *I* am out of AMMO! OMG he's hysterical, the dad from Family Ties, and then Reba McIntyre as his wife. The original preppers. And don't forget KEVIN BACON!
Wowsa, that book of your is just racking up the rewards! Congrats. Off to check out David's music theme. Good look with the writing!

    Jay, you're welcome!

    Laura, you're welcome.

    Thanks everyone!

  22. My favorite B movie is Hardware, which has elements of Terminator but is a more horrific and fun little movie.

    ReplyDelete
  23. So glad your book got picked on Goodreads. That's so awesome and will get your book out to new readers.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Congrats on winning the award!! This is awesome. I am also glad you have some time to take off as you are such a busy man. ReplyDelete
  27. Congrats, Alex! Thanks for all the news and links. The Road Trip sounds like a great idea.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love Tommy Wiseau's "The Room," but that might actually be a C or D movie, depending on who you ask.

Also, I love that metal has so many subgenres. It's never just, "What are you listening to?" "Metal." It's always, "What are you listening to?" "Norwegian melodic grindcore black post-metal."

    ReplyDelete
  29. haha Deep Rising pretty much ripped off everything going. But it was sure fun, although ended on a friggin cliffhanger type thing.

No Escape, Hot Pursuit, City Limits, Take This Job and Shove It are some that pop in for me.

    ReplyDelete
  30. thank you for sharing the Finnish Metal band... I had a phase of my life that lead me to that style of music. Which always leads me back to score music... I think I had seen Deep Rising... it's been awhile. I love B-films... picking just one... oh my. Happy time needed... thank you for all you do!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hope to start the Road Trip this week. I did mark a few blogs to return to and enjoy at leisure. Thanks for the reminder.

Birgit, glad Jeremy was able to help and I will go look - thanks!

Brandon and Bryan, I'd listen to that genre.

Pat, shame they never made a sequel.

Jeremy, you should listen to them.

    Hart, that made me chuckle...

David, yes it did! Saw that one in the theater.

    Kat, neither will I!

    Joylene, thank you.

    Katy, thanks for hosting!

    Thanks, everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Par for the course, I have no idea who this Finnish band is. Have you noticed that our musical tastes run on parallel lines???? Ha!

I also didn't see the B-rated movie you mentioned. Not surprising. I haven't seen a whole bunch of A movies that are on my list. Egads.

Lastly... CONGRATS to you on the nomination!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Thanks so much for featuring Mamas Write on your blog today (although looks a little out of place, lol). Fingers crossed that CassaStorm wins the award but how fantastic to be nominated. Will check out the roadtrip. Thanks again Alex :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. NIGHTWISH is more to my taste but it is a similar band. I have always loved DEEP RISING almost as much as I love TREMORS. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  59. I wonder if my old favorite spinning instructor has heard Insomnium. He played mostly classic metal and hard rock during class, and liked some modern metal as well. I hope the spinners at his classes in his new gym in Florida appreciate his soundtrack as much as I did.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Congratulations on the Goodreads honor, which of course you deserve.

I'm so not a metal person, but maybe I can check out Insomnium.

It sounds like Deep Rising has some better dialogue than a lot of the more serious movies. But I could only watch it by fast forwarding through the gory parts.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Wow, congrats on your nomination!!

  103. Your nicely done review persuaded me to check out Insomnium and I was not disappointed. I love the guitars! I'm not so much about the guttural vocal though, so I'm curious if there is a metal genre that's not so much death??

I guess I really liked "Billy Jack" as a cheesy B movie, or "The Legend of Boggy Creek," or "The Blob," which actually did scare me to death the first time I saw it at age eleven! Okay, now to get back to my road trip post!
