I’m between 8,000 and 10,000 words from finishing my current manuscript. Things are moving along great and I still wish I typed faster. But the first draft is almost done.
And then comes something I’ve never had to do. Go back and add new scenes, plot points, twists, and even a subplot.
Now, I’ve always had to go back and add details. That’s just a given, as I am such a barebones writer. (Hacking and slashing to bring down the word count? What on earth is that?) But I’ve never faced the task of adding so many scenes.
Some will be small, some just embellishments on existing scenes, and a couple will be several pages long. I’ve made notes where I need to go back to, so I do have a plan. But it will be a new experience for me.
Anyone else had to add a lot of new scenes?

I WILL go see anything Aaron Paul is in. Breaking Bad is one of the best shows ever. (Don't say anything, still watching it...behind as usual on everything). Kinda cracks me up how they WILL do anything to copy a successful franchise (not to mention name their movie after a video game...wonder if they got permission or if they're connected).
Never laughed at Kick-starter. Big fan and have supported many friends getting started, and are now successful film makers. Feels good.
Lastly, yes, you better not mess up Noah. Even Spielberg managed to respect the Bible when he made Prince of Egypt.
Long winded today. Better cut that out or I'll never get around my section of the list...

ReplyDeleteAdding new scenes? Absolutely. I'm an extremely concise writer (and talker) and I always have to add scenes and details after my first draft to make the story more engaging.
ReplyDeleteI'm still high off watching The Lego Movie on Saturday. Might go see Mr. Peabody next week. Can't wait for Dragons 2 but Divergent (I can at least promise you Alex that there will be death and Kate W. plays a woman with huge boo...I mean ego) will have to do as my must see movie this month. Muppets Most Wanted better not suck. I love Miss Piggy. Damn it I'm already scrounging cash for Son of God. Hopefully Noah will still be floating in Jamaican theatres when I have extra cash to see it.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm glad your writing is progressing well and it better to go back than to have written nothing. I think as writers we both know that. I'm glad 300: rise has been getting positive reviews but damn I need to save for a computer. I have already exchanged some of my paypal cash to get a new a pair of creeps and go to the movies long with a few miscellaneous expenses. So I need to buckle down if I want to get a laptop before April. Damn not having a full-time job. I have way more free time but expenses can be murder. Sorry for chatting about myself for most of this and enjoy your day Alex.
I quite often have to add whole new scenes, because my basic method is just to write a thing, then work out what on earth it's all about. I think it's not too bad, so long as you don't get attached to your first draft as somehow being the perfect version.

Sometimes I change so much of the text between drafts they could be completely different stories. Ah, the joys of being a pantser.
ReplyDeleteThe two movies I'd like to see (if I ever get out to the theater) are the Muppets: Most Wanted and Peabody and Sherman. Obviously my tastes were formed long before I heard of BBC (not the British one!).
So awesome you're almost done with your first draft. I've never had to add a lot. I have to watch my word count so not to have to slash. I'm so much slower at writing than you. Only on chapter 13.

I went to the first 300 movie with my son. Both of us wanted to disappear with the first boobage scene. We laugh about it to this day.(good movie besides embarrassment with my son)And I'm with Natalie, I loved the Divergent Book and also looking forward to the movie. As far as going back and adding scenes,yes. I've done it to make the wip better.Once I had to cut 4 whole chapters, I nearly cried, but it was the wrong POV. Sounds like you're riding over the first hump. Good Luck.

Great news on your first draft. I add scenes, I delete scenes, I add other scenes which messes up the flow, and then have to rewrite. Yesterday I muttered the dreaded words, "You might need to outline, Liza." Hence, I'm still a novelist in training. Happy IWSG Day, Alex!

I think it's pretty cool you actually KNOW you only need 8-10000 words to complete your first draft.I'm never sure how quickly I will close the story. I am at the point now where I just want to get the bare bones of the story down, then go back and add what's needed. My crit group is always saying you need to let the reader know more of what's in her thoughts, how she feels, etc. They just don't get it that I can do more of that in the next draft. First one is the skeleton so I need input on finding holes in the plot and implausible situations. Remember Natalie Goldberg's excellent book on writing, Writing Down the Bones? Hope you have fun finishing up your project!

Right now I'm swamped with writing a short story for an anthology to benefit a fellow writer with cancer, doing my A-Z posts, finishing a short story I started in December and put on the back burner when we moved to Ecuador, then I have a romance trilogy to finish and two more mystery books. What year did you want co-hosts? LOL!

cool on how much you have finished on your WIP...at least you are still working on it and realize it...and you are not having to come back later and add them...i think the hard thing is matching those new scenes up to what is there...making sure you dont mention things that happen later and get it outside of the progression to that point...and making sure the voice is similar...

For the short story I've just finished writing, I changed some details to the mystery running the story halfway through my first draft. As a result I had to go back, change some of the clues and hints I'd left...
ReplyDeleteI find that when I'm working on more complex projects, I can get twisted around, adding new details that I think of as I write. Can be a bit of a torment...
Alex, I'm like you. My first drafts are always stripped down, then I go back and layer in details, subplots, etc. I always laugh when people talk about having to hack and slash their manuscript.
ReplyDeleteI'm struggling with that need to add new scenes and plot points as well, with a new character mucking things up even further. It's tough, but I know the book will be better for it in the end.
ReplyDeleteI added a few scenes to flesh out my WIP. I even changed the opening scene, and I NEVER thought I would do that! It makes for a better-rounded story, however. You can do it, Sensei!

I've been doing a whole lot of editing and rewriting for my second draft, and now doing the 10th chapter find myself needing to write a whole new scene for the first time. I feel like I forgot how to do it!

ReplyDeleteYup. Have had to go back and add scenes and tidbits. Sometimes you don't know you need them till you look back over your story in hindsight. I've had to move scenes, too.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I write scenes ahead as the inspiration strikes. Usually it works and I just dovetail it in when I get there, but occasionally it doesn't fit, and then I'm faced with either cutting it or moving it.

I LOVE adding new scenes. It's like reenergizing a story I thought I'd never get to recreate. Layers are what make a story epic if you ask me, and being able to go back and add more after the fact? It's like getting to add another flavor of cheese to a delicious sandwich. =)

I may have to put my novel away for a while in order to write this paper for the university, but I will continue to 'check in' the first Wednesday of the month in April and May to let you all know how the cats are doing, if I can find a part time job and if the university gives me a passing grade for my paper! Then in June, I am hoping to be able to be able to continue writng my novel, evenn if I get a summer job.

I know what you mean about a bigger revision. I never had to rewrite or change a lots of scenes of my manuscripts, but I'm sure I'll have to do that with my current wip. It's not encouraging :( Hang in there. We can do it!

ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting writing process. We go into a book knowing all the sub plots, twists, etc, so I can't imagine going back in and adding that kind of stuff after the fact. I suppose that's a testament to your writing skill.
And I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who's not going nuts for Divergent. I'm over this whole teen dystopian we have to all fight each other to survive thing. I'm sure it's a fine book, but how about something new, Hollywood?

My son has already announced that he wants to see the Need For Speed movie when his birthday comes up this month, so I guess I'll be seeing it too. He plays all the games so he won't care if the plot is any good or not.

Two days ago (?) they posted a song from the movie soundtrack. We Used To Be Friends by the Dandy Warhols was the theme song for that show for the duration of its TV run. Love that song. They decided to have someone else cover it for the soundtrack. I believe that they said something about wanting a more mature sound to reflect the movie (ten years down the road). OMG the song was horrible. I haven't heard such a terrible cover in the longest time. Every comment on that post was similar to mine. "This is the worst ever..." or something like that. Now my hopes for the movie have dipped. If it has gone the way of the song... Veronica Mars fans are about to be severely disappointed.

ReplyDeleteI am super excited for Muppets Most Wanted. My mom called and said she wants to go with me (no kids, just us) because we are long-time Muppets fans. I just saw a new preview and pretty much squee-ed with delight. I totally love the Muppets for life.
Divergent I fear is going to get dismissed as a Hunger Games rip off, even though the book series is very, very successful (and continues to top bestseller charts). Supposedly it's tracking well for a big opening, but I'm not entirely sure what that means. They've already greenlit a sequel. I don't think it will bomb like Mortal Instruments (another very successful YA series which sadly did not translate well to screen or to ticket sales), but it's not going to be as huge as HG either. I guess we'll see!
Yay on the writing front! I'm in the middle of doing rewrites now on a 70k novel I wrote two years ago. Lots of adding, deleting, & and moving scenes around. Fun stuff. :D Best of luck w/ yours!

So far, the special affects look cool, and the cast is good . . . so, I have my hopes up.

I think it was two years ago now that I finished up a radical rewrite and restructuring, which involved junking the majority of the original Part I, no longer dividing the book into two parts, and creating a huge amount of new chapters and scenes. It still needs work, but it got the book from a novella-sized 38,000 words to a respectable 60,000, and became an actual story, instead of consisting primarily of chapters telling the reader about the main characters and their families. I thought the idea worked when I was fourteen, but not as an adult.
ReplyDeleteAdding words can be as hard as cutting them when editing. But I have had to do it several times and tend to find that when I get going there's no stopping me!

Congrats on the progress of your draft. My process is actually a mess. Lots of hacking and slashing most of the time, which results in new scenes having to be added to make sure the story flows.

I've never had to ADD material to my books. My first novel came in at a whopping 160K...so there was some cutting and burning involved.

ReplyDeleteCongrats on being so close to finishing the first draft. I had one story where I came in quite short of my desired word count. It is a chore to add words and scenes after the fact. So much easier to cut. I will always try and write more then I know I will need. Good luck.

ReplyDeleteMy currently insecurity is getting over lackluster results from my first book and moving forward with the next one.
In 1 week I had one person complain about me about a debt that he incurred after paying off the others through my work, I had another who told me to "F you and a collector who told me I was useless. I guess my insecurity went up a notch with people in general...thankfully not all people. I would love to see Noah and i hope it is good and not just effects laden but has great writing and acting. I can't believe Kate Winslet is in that other movie but by her history in film one should be able to see alot of boobs

ReplyDeleteUsually, when I have to add scenes, it feels weird to me. I tend to write from beginning to end (I know some who jump around for various reasons) so when I have to go back, I feel like I'm forcing something into the story.

Divergent definitely has blood and carnage. And maybe a bit of boobs.

And i already heard that Noah is really not based on the bible. The studio already released a statment that more or less said "if you're christian, please don't be mad by our giants and stuff)

I've gone back into stuff I've written to add stuff. It's not always whole scenes, but just details and dialogue, that sort of thing. It sounds like you're almost done with your story!

ReplyDeleteI often have to go back and add scenes to my WIP. Whenever I don't know the details needed to move the plot forward, I'll write a few notes and come back to the scene later. Doing that helps me get the first draft done. And I don't think I've ever had to cut words. I guess that makes me a bare bones writer too.

They might try to steal your dancing boots, use the cloning machine to get some nice tall samba dancers -driven by those boobs thoughts- and try to find where do you hide that Cosbolt you mentioned once, though.
I would offer S.A.M.'s help instead, but I fear what S.A.M. can do with so many of your clones around will not be covered by my Minion Insurance. Hmmm, okay, make that a big, underlined, neon-bright "ONLY IF" followed by "you're reckless enough."
That is such a good feeling when you get that close to the end, even if you have to go back and add more "meat". Good luck on finishing it up!

As for the movies...Hmm, I think Divergent looks cool but I think I want to read the book first.

ReplyDeleteI just learned about the new 300 movie last weekend - so I'm kind of excited about seeing it since we saw the first one.
Alex, I'm adding scenes in my WIP right now too. I cranked out a draft/outline of the entire book for NaNo, but now I'm going back to connect and smooth everything out. I actually love writing this way! It feels a bit like editing, because there's already enough there to pull you through and keep you excited about the writing while you're in the middle of it.

ReplyDeleteBelieve me, I understand having to add new scenes. In past books, I've rewritten entire chapters, sometimes as much as a third of the book. Making sure everything that's not new fits with the new stuff can be a chore, but it's worth it. Just make sure you have someone check it over for continuity errors. ^_^

ReplyDeleteMy first novel was just a 8,000 word short story that kept needing scenes added; and that ended up a trilogy. But I often find its easier just to keep writing the first draft and worry about filling in details - which scenes are just details - during the next couple edits/revisions. Hey, congrats on being nearly finished with the first writing.

You're so close to finishing your draft! That's awesome. I usually have to go back and add details that I forgot about early on or in the previous book to sprinkle carefully through the manuscript. I've got a small list of details I'll have to back and add in during my first round of editing. I'm interested in seeing Divergent because I enjoyed the trilogy.
ReplyDeleteGoing back is hard to do no matter what the reason. I went back so much on my first book that I learned to keep great notes. I stick them at the bottom of my ms. so I can view them as needed. However, I've heard of Scrivener and I'm really thinking I should invest in it. Good luck.

ReplyDeleteI just finished rewriting most of the first Act of my current manuscript. Even if it's daunting to approach doing that, it's highly rewarding when you see how much better your story is for it.
ReplyDeleteI've had to rewrite most of my novel from scratch--twice! So writing new scenes has become pretty routine for me and the new scenes almost always make me very happy. :)

I have had to go back and add scenes, but it isn't that hard and always feels good when it's done. Also, I tend to overwrite, so I slash lots of words, thousands, from my first draft every time. ReplyDeleteI have no idea how close I am to finishing my manuscript. I'm only on 1977 and I still have many years to go (to be fair-to me-I have written several stories for 1978-2005. They're just not all tied together yet).

Congratulations on the WIP. I have indeed had to add new scenes, like 20,000 words to each installment of my TOONS series. Originally, each world took only a few chapters, so there was room to grow.
ReplyDeleteI hate to say it about "Noah," but it's far from a faithful adaptation. They make the pre-Deluge world into a sort of Mad Max-type dystopia, which I don't think it was. Just hope they don't put Sodom and Gommorrah in a sea battle like that TV movie.
I write like I talk; WAY TOO MUCH INFORMATION. Ha. I always need to cut stuff out. But I don't know what to cut free. That's probably one of the biggest reasons why I don't get too far in my writing life... so I can't really help you out there friend.
ReplyDeleteI am actually afraid to see Divergent because I don't want to see a good book get hacked up in yet another poorly done adaptation. My daughter's Ancient History teacher actually offered the kids extra credit if they go to see the next 300 installment. It's rated R so that's a no go for her. Good thing she already has an A average, and doesn't need the extra credit :)
I'm cautiously optimistic about Noah. That is something I'd like to see.
Wow. That is a whole lot of movies I have no desire to pay to watch. Bring on May and Godzilla already!

ReplyDeleteI'm reading Divergent, and at first, I was thinking, great beginning, I like the main character. Now, towards the end of the book, I'm tired of the endless "Get up and fight" scenes.

ReplyDeleteCongrats on being so close to finishing yet another novel! That's amazing! I am a bare-bones writer too especially on the first pass. It doesn't make sense to add a lot of things that will be cut later.
I am definitely out for A to Z. It was fun the two years I did it. There's no time lately.
Lol, your comments of the movie round-up made me giggle. 300 looks cool, and the Noah Crowe movie could go either way.

ReplyDeleteI'm going to see Veronica Mars and Divergent because apparently I'm a 15 year old girl haha. But in my defense I'd rather spend two hours with Kristen Bell and Shailene Woodley than an army of 300 ripped, shirtless dudes (but wait... did you say boobs? lol)

I am soooo excited about Veronica Mars. But I don't know when it'll come out in Aus. I only recently saw the series for the first time, and was so hooked I wanted to rewatch it immediately after finishing. Which is very unusual for me with any show!
Also, I'm excited about Divergent even though I haven't read any of the books yet so don't even really know what I'm excited about. ha. But I do have the books now so hopefully will get the first one read before I see the movie.
Looking forward to the Muppets (glad they're back -- did they ever leave?) and Noah. Looks like Ridley Scott is making a Moses movie, too. Haven't been many big-budget Bible movies in a while.
