Ubuntu Bloghop and Humanity, Mini-Alex and Snow, Movie Trivia Answers, and Ninja News

Today I am visiting the lovely Julie Musil talking about the small publisher debate. Please join us and weigh in your thoughts.

Cherie Colyer has a Features and Spotlights she does every Friday, and this week it is on my series! Thanks, Cherie!

I finally let Mini-Alex out for a snow day and the scarf was very much needed!

Special thanks again to Elise for the creation of Mini-Alex and to Deniz for making his scarf!

Ninja News

The IWSG Website has a great guest today – the amazing Anne R. Allen!

Our good friend Roland Yeomans is undergoing surgery today for cancer. Please keep him in your prayers this week. Since Roland is also struggling with the funds for this surgery, Sean McLachlan suggested a Buy-A-Thon for his books. I’ve read several of Roland’s books and highly recommend following the adventures of one Victor Standish. Visit Roland’s author page on Amazon to see a complete listing of his eBooks and audio books. If you’ve never read any of Roland’s work, now is a great time to do so!

Did you catch Father Dragon Al’s Lord of the Clones Challenge Part 2?

Sir Baldernot at his finest!

Patricia Stoltey signed a contract with Five Star/Cengage for her first standalone suspense novel, Dead Wrong. The book is scheduled for a November 2014 release.

Terri Rochenski announced that Roane Publishing offered her a contract for Love's Sorrow, the first book in my Means of Mercy series.

Cindy at Dreamer’s Perch has a poll going on - if you had to choose, what is your favorite kind of science fiction? Visit her site to vote for the poll in her sidebar.

In a brand new series, Donna Hosie revisits Logres with THE CHILDREN OF CAMELOT.

Two worlds, one thousand years apart. And those worlds are about to collide.

THE RING OF MORGANA will be released in ebook and paperback on the 15th June 2014.

The Ubuntu Bloghop

Michelle Wallace at Writer-in-Transit is celebrating her third blog anniversary with a bloghop!

What is ubuntu? "In Africa, there is a concept known as UBUNTU – the profound sense that we are human only through the humanity of others; that if we are to accomplish anything in this world, it will in equal measure be due to the work and achievement of others." – Nelson Mandela.

When I signed up, I had no idea what I was going to post for this bloghop. I knew poetry was out of the question. (You should all be grateful for that.) I thought about posting a video or a Bible passage.

But the best example of humanity towards others came on Monday when so many rallied around Jeremy Hawkins and left comments of encouragement at his special tribute at the A to Z Blog. Over 160 people showed their support through the efforts of the A to Z Co-Hosts and DL Hammons’ Blog Blitz Team. You guys were awesome and really cheered up Jeremy!

Movie Trivia Answers

1 - Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, Al Pacino – 1995 – Heat
2 - Morgan Freeman, Bruce Willis, Karl Urban – 2010 – Red
3 - Joe Pantoloano, Carrie-Anne Moss, Guy Pearce – 2000 - Memento
4 - Bonnie Bedelia, William Sadler, Bruce Willis = 1990 – Die Hard II
5 - James McAvoy, Liam Neeson, Tilda Swinton – 2005 – Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

Have you read one of Roland’s books yet? Excited about the new book deals? How would you define Ubuntu? Get any of the trivia right? And who wants to play in the snow with Mini-Alex?

Don’t forget to visit Julie Musil today and Cherie Colyer on Friday!

  1. I've just stopped by Roland's blog and offered my support and prays. I hate to thing of him going through this alone. Thank you for letting us know, Alex.

The Ring of Morgana is a beautiful cover. Congratulations, Donna.

  2. Congrats to Patricia on her contract. Very heartwarming I'm sure for Jeremy to know so many people cared.

    Have a good day Alex

  3. I guess it pays to not be able to sleep! Holy cow! I can't believe I'm so high up the list!

Love mini-Alex in the snow. Mini-Alex in...would make a great theme...certainly less work than last years HIGHLY ambitious but oh so wonderful since I was an honored recepient, theme. Yeah, there's a good sentence, writer girl who needs to sleep.

    Headed over to your interview.

And yes, Monday at the A-Z Blog was awesome. I read all 160 comments. I know that's nothing for a Ninja, but for this girl, that's a lot...

  5. Love Mini Alex. Send him up here so he can go outside instead of me?

    ReplyDelete
  6. I'm so sorry to hear about Roland. Will definitely send up a prayer for his recovery from the surgery.

  7. We're finally getting into the thirties and forties over here, so mini-Alex wouldn't need his scarf. I should check out Roland's books and Cindy's page.

  8. Congrats to Donna. She rocks, and I love her series. Cloned in a machine made by dwarves? lol

    ReplyDelete
  9. Did you know I had a franchise for cloning machines and am sharing the profits with the Dragon Cave?

I think the Ubuntu concept is wonderful, Hilary has embraced it too this morning.

Good luck to Roland for his surgery, I hope all goes well.

I will certainly keep Roland in prayer.

Congrats for all the great haps!

  13. LUV, hugs, & prayers to Roland. I didn't know about his health issues. Thanks for sharing.

I'm heading over to peek at Donna's book, now. I love the cover!

I am still such a loser. I keep hesitating to sign up for IWSG. Think I'm scared I'll depress myself with all my issues. ;)

  14. Mini-Alex looks terrific in his scarf! We're finally out of the snow here...that storm and heavy rain washed it away last night.

So sorry to hear about Roland. Thanks for letting us know.

  15. Congrats to Michelle. There's definitely a lot of ubuntu in this community!

Just found out about Roland - all the best. I've read a couple of his works and must read more.

  16. Mini Alex looks a lot warmer than I was in the snow.

I'll be thinking of Roland today. A buy-a-thon is such an excellent idea!

The Morgana cover is beautiful! Been seeing it around a lot today.

    Happy Wednesday!

  17. Ellie, he will appreciate it.

Tina, I'll work on that theme. And there were so many great comments for Jeremy. And I know - the post at Julie's will be up soon.

    Liza, that made me chuckle.

Jo, we'll be up to our eyeballs in Dwarves in no time. And I think Mini-Alex found the snow too cold even with the scarf.

Sheri, please join us!! You'll fit right in.

Elizabeth, the storm this morning washed away just about everything.

  18. Thinking about Roland today and wishing him well. Will have to check out his author page.

  19. Glad mini-Alex got out in the snow. I'm guessing it's a rare treat. Not for us here.

Thinking of Roland today. Hope things go well for him.

  20. Got everyone right, lots of good news for some authors indeed. Hopefully the stupid cancer gets beat back at high speed. And what? To scared for poetry at your hut? haha

    ReplyDelete
  21. Mini Alex looks stylish... very warm and comfy too...

    Perfect example of Ubuntu, Alex.
Lots of people seem a bit confused when it comes to the meaning. In it's simplest form, Ubuntu means human-ness/human kindness. It's all about people.
    Thanks for participating.
Thinking of Roland and praying for him...

I'm off to check out some links... especially Lord Of The Clones part 2...

  22. I'm so sorry for all the Roland is going through. It seems like he has had more than his share of troubles. I hope he makes a smooth recovery and will be well soon.

Mini-Alex was totally rocking that scarf.

  23. One of my favorite things about the writing community is how supportive they are of each other. My prayers are with Roland today.

    ReplyDelete
  24. That Ubuntu concept is true for writers, I think. We're nothing without readers.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm definitely praying for Roland. It's already the 19th here, so every time I glimpse my calendar on my computer, I remember to shoot up a prayer.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It's frightening enough when surgery is exploratory with a possibility of cancer. That's true for both the patient and their families. Surgery to deal with cancer is awful and hopeful at the same time. I'll keep Roland and his family in my prayers.

Glad we were able to cheer up Jeremy. He's a cool dude.

Snow is a nasty four letter word for me this year. Our temps are in the 40's and 50's most of this week with nasty snow possible Monday night. If there is any accumulation, I think I'll make a snow ninja effigy and throw snow balls at it, lol!

Donna's cover is pretty and I like the premise. Need to check it out.

  28. Hi Alex - I sure hope Roland will be well cared for and will come through this peacefully.

Jeremy will just break the security screens - but otherwise he'll be ok ... such an unfortunate place to break though ...

Ubuntu = human kindness and respect for all living things ... humans, all life ...

Loads of authors getting published or signing contracts - wonderful to read about ..

    Cheers Hilary

  55. Hi Alex - you asked about the Operating System Ubuntu .. in the TED talk and article I linked to .. I copy the para over ..

"Ubuntu, the operating system. Ubuntu is also the name of “the world’s most popular free OS.” It was named this by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth, who launched Ubuntu in 2005 to compete with Microsoft. Unbuntu is all about open source development — people are encouraged to improve upon the software so that it continually gets better. According to this article in The New York Times from 2009, “Created just over four years ago, Ubuntu (pronounced oo-BOON-too) has emerged as the fastest-growing and most celebrated version of the Linux operating system, which competes with Windows primarily through its low, low price: $0.” Read up on Ubuntu’s latest release, or check out this list of great Ubuntu apps."

Saves you a bit of time .. you always have loads going on .. cheers Hilary

  56. I'm so sorry to hear about Roland and I think your encouragement of writers to rally around him is a perfect example of Ubuntu.

As for playing in the snow...I'm kinda hoping ours will melt away soon.

  57. Good health wishes to Roland and to Jeremy (who to me, I still think of as iZombie).

    ReplyDelete
  58. I was so thrilled to see the support for Jeremy this week. It proves that blogging is more about community than anything else. It's nice to know we have such wonderful people here.

I'll keep praying for Roland and his family. Cancer is a tough one, without worrying about all the bills that go with it.

As much as I think the scarf is too cute, I think I'll skip playing in the snow. I'm such a wimp when it comes to cold weather :)

  59. Roland is in my head and heart. And if good wishes have any power (which I hope and believe they do) he will come through this ordeal better than he dared hope.

If Mini-Alex likes the snow, he should learn some winter sport.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Thanks for your blog post over at Julie's. It was very informative. AND I've always thought your covers were all top-notch!

The Ring of Morgana has a great cover. Congratulations to Donna and to all you lucky (talented) guys who got TP offers. Awesome!

I have stopped by and offered my support, will do now. And I'll stop by your post too. I have a million bloggers to visit today!! Um, may have to spread it over a few days.

Loved your Ubuntu offering. The online writing community is incredibly humbling. X

  117. Yay for your feature at Cherie's and for letting Mini-Alex have some fun in the snow.

Congrats to Patricia, Terri, and Donna!

I'm hoping both Jeremy and Roland recover soon.

  119. How wonderful to see that so many fellow writers are living their dreams right now. Congratulations to all those with new books, contracts, and deals. Makes me want to write more.

  120. I'll stop by to see you at Julie's and Cherie's. So sorry about Roland, but sincerely hope his surgery is successful.

I did catch Lord Baldornot's splendid performance.

Hammon's Blitz is a super idea and so glad to see it go into action to help another writer.

  121. Soooo much good news here, as always, but I'm really sorry to hear about Roland's surgery. The book buy-a-thon sounds like a terrific idea, and I'll definitely hop on over to Amazon and do some buying.

Who would have thought a concept as lofty and heartwarming as Ubuntu would have such a strong toehold in the blogosphere? But it sure does, and we see examples of it every day.

  122. Alex, thanks so much for mentioning my name on your most awesome blog.

I was off computer for a few days so didn't see the info about Rolland until this morning. I sure hope all is okay.

  123. Hey Alex,

I hope Roland Yeomans surgery went well.

Great post. The movie trivia was killing me because I love Morgan Freeman and Bruce Willis and I knew that answer was going to be so obvious once I saw it. It was, lol. Red is a good one.

    Have a great weekend =-)

  124. I got most of the trivia right :)

  125. Lee, it was successful!

    Susan, yes we do.

Patricia, you're welcome, and Roland is home safe now.

  126. I'm already offering prayers for Roland.

Loving the Lord of the Clones Challenge over at the Dragon Cave.

    Congratulations on everyone's good news.

  127. Congrats on the feature! I'll pray for Roland. The Children of Camelot series looks good. I'm a big fan of Arthurian legend. Red! That's the movie I couldn't think of! Happy Friday! :D

  128. I'm reading Roland's "Her Bones are in the Badlands" right now and am loving it! Will definitely head over to get more of him in my library. Sucks that he has to worry about paying for it and can't focus only on getting better. I'll keep him in my prayers.

  129. I'm glad it's mini Alex out in the snow and not me. We have been enjoying some warmer days lately.

  130. Another display of humanity at its finest. A lot to take note of here in the ethos of a sharing, caring community.

Penny the Jack Russell dog and modest internet superstar would love to play in the snow with Mini-Alex!

  131. Enjoyed your interview on Julie's blog. Inspired by Michelle's blog hop - Nice perspective realignment.

  132. What you all did for Jeremy on the A-Z blog was truly an example of ubuntu, Alex!

    ReplyDelete
  133. Nicki, he'll be happy to hear that.

    Gary, I bet she would!

    Corinne, thanks!

  134. So glad Jeremy is dong better, and Roland, wow, great support to buy his books - I have!
And Michael having surgery too, it must be something in the air?

Great post on Small Publishers, wouldn't have done it without them.

  137. I think the Blog Blitz team really does work in the spirit of Ubuntu :) I hadn't thought of that before, but it's such a good point!

  138. Sending good thoughts and wishes to Roland during the very difficult time.

I have to say that I love Mini-Alex with the scarf. Very necessary at this time- don't want him to catch cold.

  139. Definitely keeping Roland in prayer -- and Donna's covers always look so good.

  140. I will go and visit Roland and buy his books on Amazon. He will be in my prayers. I will be praying for his speedy recovery.

  143. What a cheery post Alex! Mini Alex in the snow really made me smile. Maybe because I just got back from a wonderful afternoon walk on the beach in Florida! OH... to feel the sun again was wonderful and not to have to wear twenty pounds of clothing to go out was just amazing.

Congrats to all our blogger friends' book deals. ALL the best!

Posted about Ubuntu as well... Glad Jeremy is cheered. And a fast recovery for Roland! And yes, I have read several of his books. No one has as much heart and soul as Roland in his writings.

  144. Yolanda, something is definitely in the air.

    Trisha, they do!

Jess, then I'd have to spoon-feed him soup and orange juice.

    Toi, Roland will appreciate that.

    Michael, that is true!

  145. Hey Alex. I've been unplugged lately and only now found out about Roland's surgery. Thanks for posting about this, you're a good friend. He's supposed to return to work for 7 days straight! Anyone who hasn't read any of his books should definitely check out the Victor series. I just added some of his new stuff to my collection. If nothing else, pray for him. He's really had a rough time of it lately.

  146. Lots of interesting releases here so
much to read and I do enjoy reading.
The mini Alex is adorable. I am just about done with your first book so will be looking to buy book two soon.

    Take care...

  147. That is a great example of the Ubuntu spirit in the blogging world. Gald to see we managed to cheer Jeremy up. Just knowing that, makes me feel good. It's also nice to see Mini Alex getting out and about. I see in your latest post he's also getting into a bit of trouble, terrible 2s maybe? ;)

  148. I've been so out of the sync these past few months. I'm just thrilled to finally get online. Very happy to hear all the good news. Love the covers. And now I'm off to Julie's.

  149. My thoughts are with Roland.

Mini-Alex would need an umbrella in London today. More rain.
