Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D! Plus October Movie Preview, Ninja News, Christy Dorrity’s The Awakening, and a Farscape Character That Nearly Bit the Dust

I am flying high today and set for Cruising Altitude 2.0! That’s right, I am visiting DL Hammons today, the mastermind behind Write Club and the Blog Blitz. I’m talking about the Pros and Cons of Writing a Book Series, so check it out.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

For those of you who missed it, the season premier was awesome! Directed by Joss Whedon himself, it had everything you enjoyed about the Avengers. Entertainment Weekly has already viewed the next few episodes, and while not directed by Whedon, they are just as good.

The show’s strong point is its humor and more shows could learn from its example. S.H.I.E.L.D. proved you could have drama and action AND humor. It’s the perfect balance. Shows like Stargate Universe fail because they are too damn depressing. A little humor and hope goes a long way.

Yes, I am hooked and can’t wait until next week’s show!

The Final Word…

Blastr listed eleven TV characters who were going to die until fans fell in love with them. One of them was Chiana from Farscape. She was only to last a couple episodes, but fans and the writers liked her quirkiness and she stuck around for the entire series. (Did I mention she was also sexy?)

Did you watch S.H.I.E.L.D? See some good books to pick up? Ready for the IWSG next month? Any of the October movies excite you? And what if Chiana hadn’t survived…?

Be sure to visit DL at Cruising Altitude 2.0!

  3. Enjoyed watching SHEILD. Looking forward to the next episode.

  4. Agents of SHIELD was awesome...def engaging but not over the top comic book either so i think they will appeal to a wide audience....

    ReplyDelete
  5. I may have to check out Shield. Thanks for the recommendation.

  6. Hey Alex,

I caught the encore episode of Agents last night (I taped it, but never had the chance to see it). EXCELLENT. For one thing, I'm a big Joss Whedon fan with Buffy, Angel, and Firefly...and his insertions of humor in all the right places is what makes it all work. Can't wait for the rest of the season!

And thanks for the Feedly help. I think I have it working correctly on my blog.

Have a great day and weekend!

    M.L. Swift, Writer

  7. Kitty, you win a whole case of transparent underwear for that!!

Brian, good point. It will have a wider appeal that way.

Mike, glad you got Feedly working. And it is his skill with the humor that makes it work.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Jack was supposed to die in the pilot episode of Lost. it's my favorite bit of trivia from that series.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Hi Alex! I'm so glad you posted a review about SHIELD because I was on the fence about catching this one (gasp, someone on the fence about this show!?) Thanks for the review and, as always, thanks for being so cool!!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I have been DVR-ing S.H.I.E.L.D and I will probably binge on it after it accumulates a few episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I haven't had a chance to watch SHIELD yet, but I'm looking forward to when I do have the time. I'm not a diehard Whedon fan (Whedonite?) (unless we're talking about Firefly, which I unabashedly ADORE), but I am a sucker for secret agents and not-quite-superheroes, so this is right up my alley.

I'm SO glad they didn't kill off Chiana in Farscape!

    ReplyDelete
  12. I don't think S.H.I.E.L.D is airing in New Zealand, or I missed it. We are usually quite a bit behind on the US TV shows, sometimes an entire season.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Really enjoyed S.H.I.E.L.D but gave up on SLEEPY HOLLOW already. I liked so much about it but it just was going in too weird a direction for me.

Can't wait for CAPTAIN PHILLIPS and GRAVITY. WIll definitely watch THE CONJURING on DVD.

And headed to Julie's blog to read Howey's writing and publishing tips.... :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'm too busy reading a good book called Cassa Storm to pay attention to TV and movies.

    ReplyDelete
  15. S.H.I.E.L.D. ROCKS!!!!! I've loved everything by Joss Whedon so far, and this is no exception.

Thank you for stopping by my blog and imparting your wisdom regarding writing a series. Great stuff!

    Have a great weekend! :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Thanks for the tip about S.H.I.E.L.D. I'll have to check it out. The other new show I'm excited about is The Blacklist.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Randi Lee, you have to watch it now.

Optimistic, that's usually how I watch shows, but I won't be able to wait with this one.

Louise, you can adore Firefly all you want!

Jo, that is an awesome excuse!! Thank you.

    DL, thanks again!

    ReplyDelete
  18. S.H.I.E.L.D. was great.
I can't wait to own Pacific Rim.
Machete Kills is definitely a wait and see for me.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Wow - lots of good stuff.

Would you believe I actually watch part of S.H.I.E.L.D.? ...during one of my rare TV-watching moments. LOL I agree. It's good.

I'll probably sit out the Oct. IWSG (I'm all blog-hopped-out from Follow Fest), but I'll pop over to see your announcement. :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hey! I see my story up there! Dude, you're awesome.

Lessee, saw Shield, and liked it, but felt like it was missing something, that show will get a much longer leash than most I watch though. I'll stay around to watch.

The cover for the Geis book is amazing.

And I didn't know that about Chiana, I did know that.... aw shoot, I forgot her name, the lady that was a plant??? Anyway, loved her character, and the actress who played her developed some health problems from the show (from her makeup?) and eventually died of it. So sad.

Regardless, Farscape was one of my favorite shows of all time.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Can't wait to see both Gravity and Captain Phillips. I think I'll do Gravity and Captain Phillips as a double feature, and it will be all kinds of awesome! Of course, I have ridiculously high expectations for Gravity and Captain Phillips because of their Oscar buzz - they better not disappoint, and live up to their hype. :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. SHIELD... is a great show and it was nice to see that Whedon remembers those who helped him in the start using actors that he has worked with before.... before he was the billion dollar man.

the films, you mention for me are not on the list. do to financial obligations... i am interested to see Robots fighting robots.

    See you over at CA2.0...

    ReplyDelete
  23. Congrats to Rusty, Jennifer, Sarah, Kelly, Julie, and Cate!

    Christy's cover is awesome!

Thanks for the info about SHIELD. I hope it comes out internationally soon. I'm off to visit you at Cruise Alt. Have a great weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree with you about Stargate Universe; it was a little too dark. I think that's what I loved about the other Stargate shows; they were funny. Like Dr. McKay and Jack, they were my favorite characters :)

Oh, and I am wickedly looking forward to Gravity!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I loved Chiana! She was my favorite character.

I enjoyed Agents of SHIELD, too.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I was thinking about watching Shield but my wife owns the TV and decided she was going to watch some thing else. Since I don't want to give up football in trade for other types of TV, I went on about my business. :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I really liked Agents of SHIELD. My hubs said it was good but not great - I think I talk too much about Joss Whedon, so his expectations were too high lol
    We'll definitely keep watching!

About your comment on my blog - no worries, really! :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. David, it will be a NetFlix guilty pleasure.

    Melissa, that's all right.

Rusty, it was an awesome show. Was is the blue chick?

Livia, I bet they will both be awesome.

Marcy, they missed the mark with Universe. Humor is what made the other shows work so well.

    Charles, can't give up football!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm glad Agents of SHIELD was good! I'll have to check it out. I can't believe it's almost October. Wasn't the last IWSG post like yesterday? The preview for Gravity took my breath away! I hope the movie is as good as it looks.

    Have a great weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks for the shout-out, Alex. :)
I was a little disappointed in Agents of SHIELD. Maybe they'd built it up too much, but it didn't live up to the hype for me.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I enjoyed Agents of SHIELD too. A few little stiff bits, but it's the pilot. It'll work itself out. I had no idea they were going to kill off Chiana! She was one of my favorites in that show. I just picked up Iron Man 3 to watch tonight. That will be my exciting Friday viewing! Have a great weekend. :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Alex - Yes, blue lady - was one of the original cast members, right from the pilot episode.

    ReplyDelete
  33. So many awesome books coming out! I might have to take a look at agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. sounds awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Great news about SHIELD! And wow Gravity looks awesome!!
    Have an excellent weekend Alex!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Captain Phillips looks like a good film. Maybe Gravity as well.

    Lee
    Tossing It Out

    ReplyDelete
  36. The humor in S.H.I.E.L.D is excellent and I've heard things about episode 4 Alex. I literally can't wait for GRAVITY. It looks like the best film of the year!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I loved SHIELD (but of course I did) and I'm looking forward to more episodes. I really want to know what's going on with Coulson. What can't he know? And why can't we know it? I promise I won't tell him. Well, probably won't, anyway...

    ReplyDelete
  38. I missed S.H.I.E.L.D. Shucks! I guess I can catch on as it's only been one show. Looking forward to IWSG! Thanks in advance to your co-hosts. :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ah, yes, Farscape... It could have been so much better if they'd known what they were doing. But I did like it. And I remember the stuff about Virginia Hey getting sick, but she's, um, still alive. And I can't remember, now, when her character left the show. Did the character die? Maybe that's why?

    ReplyDelete
  40. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I LOVED Agents of SHEILD. I am definitely hooked too. And pretty excited for the Pacific Rim dvd.

    ReplyDelete
  42. What a bummer it would have been if Chiana died! The actor was incredible and the character was such fun. A great addition to the cast, off-setting how women had otherwise been portrayed as war-like or stoic.

Am I the only one very uncomfortable with Captain Phillips? An entire film of scraggly black people terrorizing heroic Tom Hanks is not what the industry needs.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Everyone I've heard commenting on SHIELD absolutely loved it. *adds another show to my to-be-watched list* I'm ready and excited to help out with IWSG!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Yes, I think Gravity is very interesting, and good actors.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I missed SHIELD. But then, I missed three of my shows season premiers. I got my week's messed up probably because of my groaning work schedule. Dan said he'd find out if there is a repeat somewhere and let me know.

Wow, quite a few good books out. I'm thinking my son would like Rusty's new book.

I want to see Gravity. I haven't watched a Sandra Bullock movie yet I haven't loved.

btw, I found an email in my junk folder. I'll respond this weekend.

    Sia McKye Over Coffee

    ReplyDelete
  46. I forgot to watch SHIELD. I'm looking forward to Pacific Rim since I didn't see it in theaters. I'm excited about next Wednesday.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm still on the fence with The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I like that it picks up after The Avengers and the humor is there, but I think my expectations were too high. I'm going to hang in there and make my final decision after a couple more episodes. Why isn't Joss Whedon directing all of the episodes? It isn't like he has anything better to do? Ha Ha Ha...

    ReplyDelete
  48. Like you, I really loved SHEILD (I won't do all those pesky periods!). Humor at the right places make or break a story film or prose. I will be for Siv on our mututal birthday, of course. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm really intrigued by the Clooney/Bullock movie. I stopped caring about the Oscars a long time ago, about the time they started picking such bad best movies...

And in other news, Konstanz Silverbow's book "Only Half Alive" was released yesterday.

  50. You know something Alex. you are creating a whole lot of envy in me by mentioning S.H.I.E.L.D, its something I would love to watch , but I am sure it will not air on Indian T.V.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oops, forgot to tell you that I am looking forward to my co-hostess' duty for IWSG. Will hop over to D.L's blog.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Samantha, it seems like it!

Cate, you're welcome. And sorry, maybe the next one will be better for you.

Christine, we got it as well, but tonight we need to catch up with Star Trek.

    Rusty, I didn't realize she'd died!

Maurice, they are saying it's the best space film ever!

MJ, would you let the secret slip?

Andrew, if it was her, I saw on the IMDB that she is indeed still alive. I think her character did die.

    John, we'll find out.

Ilima, glad you are one of the co-hosts!

Sia, that's funny! Your email doesn't like me...

Christine, he's got this little thing going called Avengers II...

Roland, it's your birthday as well? Cool!

Tina, that point was a long time ago. And good for Konstanz!

Rachna, sorry! Glad you're helping next month.

    ReplyDelete
  53. So excited for Christy!

we missed Shield because we were traveling. I'm hoping to find it on ABC onlline when we get home tonight.

Pacific Rim was a real popcorn movie. My only complaint was I had to sit through all that over-the-top (but amazing) action and didn't even get to see a kiss a the end. Grrrr

    ReplyDelete
  54. Never hear of the series before !!! Heading over to DL !! ;)-

    ReplyDelete
  55. I loved S.H.I.E.L.D. and plan on picking up Rusty's new book. I can't wait to see Gravity.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'm curious about the major announcement on Wednesday ...

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'll head over to visit DL in just a moment. Gravity looks interesting, and I missed SHIELD, but plan to watch it either streaming, or later on Netflix. I'm just slow that way.
Congrats to all on the books, and yes, many look good.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I thought SHIELD was okay, seemed to be carrying over the plot from Iron Man 3, and also some oddly sexual stuff with women in lingerie and bending over to show cleavage which felt a bit out of place. Sex sells, I guess.

    mood

    p.s. is Coulson a robot? He's a robot, right?

    ReplyDelete
  59. I'm glad to read that SHIELD does humor, and it does it right.

    Happy weekend, Alex.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I saw it too and loved it! It was funny and exciting and just a fun ride. Lola is my favorite!
    Edge of Your Seat Romance

    ReplyDelete
  61. I mentioned elsewhere that I fell asleep after watching 20 minutes of Star Trek into darkness, so I probably won't see any of these. Could I be considered an non-geek?

    ReplyDelete
  62. Oh, man, I didn't know Joss Whedon was directing the TV show as well...now I gotta see it, thanks! :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Donna, at least the monsters didn't kiss...

    Moody, we'll find out. Maybe!

Mark, you don't even have a geek car to confiscate...

    ReplyDelete
  64. I read some critics about the Gravity, and as they said it's a good movie. There is no sound in space. :)

The Machete Kills will be funny no-brainer, but I'll be waiting for the DVD release of it.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D... I wasn't impressed, however the the season tell me the final verdict. I had almost the same feeling when I watched the classic Knight Rider series with Hasselhoff.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is airing tonight in the UK, and I can't watch it. This is our new family programme - which means we have to watch it all together, and Hubby's out tonight. In fact, we might struggle for the next couple of weeks. I'm going to be so behind!

    ReplyDelete
  66. See, I'd never heard of SHIELD! What would I do without you, Alex????

    ReplyDelete
  67. Awwww... Now dragon is pouting big time. I would watch S.H.I.E.L.D if I could but if it is airing in Mexico, it must be Cable only. Ah well, just matter of a couple of years that's all.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Thank you for the shout-out Alex! Have a good weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Chiana was kind of quirky, but likeable. I miss the Farscape series. I'll go hop over to DL's blog.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Already stopped by DLs to say hello.

Gravity is one movie wifey and I are looking forward too. The special effects look (ahem) out of this world!

And oh yeah Chiana was incredibly sexy!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Missed SHIELD, but plan on seeing it before the next episode. I just watched Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into the Darkness was awesome. Just finished reading CassaFire, Loved it and can't wait to start on CassaStorm!!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Thanks for sharing my blog post, Alex! I am going right over to DL's blog to check out your interview.

    ReplyDelete

  76. Fans can have a huge impact on a series. I'm into SHIELD is well and Christy's cover has me thinking Wolverine has a long lost sister. Gravity is on my watch list most definitely. Enjoy the weekend Alex.

  79. Agents of shield was awesome indeed and agreed Stargate universe was crap as it was way too depressing. Thanks for the shout too.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Thanks for highlighting AWAKENING, Alex!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Andrew is right. She isn't dead. Stupid memory. Sorry for the crazy wrong thing I was thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I'm not sure about S.H.I.E.L.D. It's fairly interesting, but sometimes it just seems like any other action drama. Oh well, that's just me :)

    ReplyDelete
  83. Hi Alex,

Ah yes, DL and all those things that bring folks his way and that way

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered on British TV on Friday night. Never got to watch it.

And I will forget any blogfest, thank you very much.

    IWSG? Okay.

A good weekend to you and your starstruck fans.

    Gary

  84. Pat, what you said - I was being nice, but that describes the show.

    Christy, you're welcome!

Rusty, no worries. The mind is the first thing to go...

Gary, good to know the IWSG is all right.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I didn't watch S.H.I.E.L.D because I didn't think TV would do it justice. But, I may give it a shot.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. sounds AWEsome!! I'm looking forward to seeing it. (We're always a bit slow getting shows in Oz. I have to wait. Hopefully not long).

    ReplyDelete
  87. Usually, not having TV service is no big deal for me but I was bummed to miss the SHIELD premier. I still have to look to see if they posted it online.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D totally lived up to my expectations and I'm hooked.

Between that and Sleepy Hollow, I just may have a couple of things to actually watch on t.v. this season :)

    ReplyDelete
  89. Thanks so much for the shout-out, Alex. I hope your series sales have skyrocketed! Mine improved during release week but they're slowly creeping up. Hope you have a great weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Damn I missed S.H.I.E.L.D! It sounds incredible! We need humor to put up with the stress n' drama! Wow, so many places to visit~ I am hooked on Sleepy Hollow...can't wait. TV is getting better ;D

    Happy Weekend Captain!

  91. Congrats to all the authors with book news.

    Gravity looks good.

Looking foward to IWSG next week and the news!

  92. SHIELD sounds good, as does BLACKLIST which is about to start over here. May get a little time to have a peek.

So much good news in the 'sphere.

    Denise

    ReplyDelete
  93. Congrats to all of the authors! I haven't seen S.H.I.E.L.D. yet, but it does sound like a fun show. One of the best new shows I've seen is The Blacklist with James Spader. It really kept us on the edge of our seats, and James Spader is absolutely captivating.

  94. Great books and equally great authors.
Enjoyed your guest spot on DL Hammond.

  95. Thanks for all the entertainment goodies. I hope to read some of these books and watch some of these movies.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I'll be participating in the Norse Gods blogfest. It's a great idea for a blog. Love the image, by the way. It reminds me of those D&D fanzines from back in the 1980s. I snapped those up anytime I could find them!

    ReplyDelete
  97. A major announcement - Yay! I missed SHIELD but a friend is going to record it for me from now on (he also recorded Under the Dome, and I am so grateful for that).

    ReplyDelete
  98. Thanks for the heads up on this new series Alex. It is not always easy to be caught up with new stuff coming out and I missed this one. Also thanks for shouting out about the blogfest, should be a fun day :)I can't believe it is almost October!

    ReplyDelete
  99. All, it is where Whedon began.

    Mark, you expressed it well!

    Jennifer, you're welcome.

    Ella, don't jinx it!

Denise and Julie, Blacklist is great thanks to Spader - he dominates that show.

AJ, you might win the actual print version of that image!

    ReplyDelete
  100. Yep. Enjoyed Shield, along with my daughter, who immediately rushed to Tumblr to see what the rest of the fandom thought. My biggest worry is that subsequent shows won't be as good, so it's good to hear that at least the next few shows are also good.

  101. One of the things I love about the Marvel installments is the humor. And I'm so happy that my favorite agent lives again! I have it on DVR TBW.

I don't know if I can watch Gravity. It looks amazing, but...I don't want to watch someone slowly die if that's what happens. I'll wait for a review so I can cheat :)

I didn't know there were other Farscape fans out here!!!!! There's a sat. channel called PIVOT that does mini-marathons on the weekends!

  102. Thank you! Not a spoiler in sight! All three of us haven't been available to sit down and watch SHIELD yet. I'm dyin'!

Great googly-moogly! So many new books!

    Have a great weekend, ALEX!

Thanks for mentioning of My Killbot Buddy by Rusty Webb. I'm intrigued.
released a book recently – and didn’t tell anyone! My Killbot Buddy is now available – ‘An Epic Tale of an Old Man and His Killer Robot.’ The dude is an awesome writer, so pick it up!

I read and liked your guest post and left a comment.

    Have a great weekend!

  106. I loved S.H.I.E.L.D. -- I also liked The Blacklist. I think it has potential...kind of like a political/thriller version of the Hannibal Lechter theme.

  107. As always, thanks for a post chock full of entertainment news I need to know! I'm definitely going to check out Gravity.
But first, I must start thinking about my IWSG post. Which of my many insecurities shall I feature this month?

  108. Hi Alex- thanks for stopping by Daily Dodo - so nice to see you! Hug congrats on the new release and I'm so excited to see Rusty has something new out too - loved his last work. I can see I'm headed for a week break from chick lit for a delve into some sci-fi and fantasy.

  111. Need to watch Shield, and no I'm not ready, for some reason I'm way behind these last few months, but not complaining - wouldn't trade it for the world!

Although, that trip to the beach just what we both needed!

  112. Greetings my Ninja Captain Alex! I just wanted to thank you for being part of the Blog Blitz on my site the other day. It was amazing! I'm going to Print Screen your comment and save it forever and ever and ever!! :D

  114. Shield was a little rough around the edges but what debut show isn't. When the character settle into their groove, I bet it's a winner. Until Fox cans it that is.

What?! Rusty has another book out? K, I'm drooling now.

  115. Shock of all shocks, I actually watched the series premier of S.H.I.E.L.D. It was pretty good. :)

And congrats on your release week success. I apologize for not getting a post up promoting CasaStorm, but the local storm in CO took all the energy out of me.

  122. Shield is on my radar, Alex. I've just come back from the hospital stay with Christopher so I'm super behind. That list of characters from TV who were going to get the axe until was amazing. Helo was a shock. Cannot believe they actually had the audacity to want to kill him off. MAN! SO NOT COOL!

I'll check out your guest post, pal.

  123. Hilary, if you saw it Friday night, that was it!

    T, it's this week!

Robyn, glad you are back. Helo was cool - what would've Boomer have done without him?

  124. I didn't watch S.H.I.E.L.D. (I did record it though!) I think I'm going to like it. Captain Phillips and Gravity are must sees for me, but I'll also pass on Machete.

  125. I didn't watch shield. I was afraid of being disappointed - and wasn't that guy killed in the last movie. What?

Am following you (again) from my new identity. http://tonjamatney.blogspot.com.

    Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. looks great.
The link to "What movies you should watch" was crazy.
...and I agree with you on Machete Kills.

  127. Pat, just wait until you watch it.

    Tonja, thanks!

    Thanks, Toinette.

  128. I finally got to see SHIELD today! IT WAS AWESOME!

Was it me or did Mr. Gregg have a super-secret smile on the whole episode???

I was highly impressed and I can't wait to see more!

  135. I've not had a chance to watch Agents of SHIELD yet, but I definitely want to. NCIS premiered at the same time and I couldn't miss finding out what happened to Gibbs.

Am I the only one who doesn't have a clue what Gravity is about, other than how is that a whole movie?
