August Movie Preview! Plus Solomon Kane Review, Bambi Meets Godzilla, Ninja News, and Special Announcement

Here are the upcoming movies for August! As always, descriptions courtesy of the IMDB. Snarky comments by me.

2 –

Europa Report
An international crew of astronauts undertakes a privately funded mission to search for life on Jupiter's fourth largest moon.
Director: Sebastián Cordero
Stars: Christian Camargo, Embeth Davidtz, Michael Nyqvist, Sharlto Copley
Unique found footage film that’s generating some good buzz. I just might be found footage overdone though…

2 Guns
A DEA agent and a naval intelligence officer find themselves on the run after a botched attempt to infiltrate a drug cartel. While fleeing, they learn the secret of their shaky alliance: Neither knew that the other was an undercover agent.
Director: Baltasar Kormákur
Stars: Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg, Paula Patton, Bill Paxton
Washington and Wahlberg – could be action-packed fun.

9 –

Elysium
A factory worker takes on a mission to hijack his way onto a man-made space habitat.
Director: Neill Blomkamp
Stars: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga
From the director of District 9. Not an original idea (Battle Angel Alita anyone?) but I’m hoping it’s as good as the previews.

Planes
Dusty is a cropdusting plane who dreams of competing in a famous aerial race. The problem? He is hopelessly afraid of heights. With the support of his mentor Skipper and a host of new friends, Dusty sets off to make his dreams come true.
Director: Klay Hall
Stars: Val Kilmer, Teri Hatcher, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Carlos Alazraqui
From Disney not Pixar – can you say Cars with wings?

We’re the Millers
A veteran pot dealer creates a fake family as part of his plan to move a huge shipment of weed into the U.S. from Mexico.
Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber
Stars: Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, Jason Sudeikis, Ed Helms
From the creator of Dodgeball, which was actually kind of funny...

Also releasing - Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters

16 –

Kick Ass 2
The costumed high-school hero Kick-Ass joins with a group of normal citizens who have been inspired to fight crime in costume. Meanwhile, the Red Mist plots an act of revenge that will affect everyone Kick-Ass knows.
Director: Jeff Wadlow
Stars: Chloë Grace Moretz, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jim Carrey, Christopher Mintz-Plasse
I’ll admit it – guilty pleasure! And the first one really did kick ass

Also releasing – Paranoia, The Butler, and Jobs

23 –

The World’s End
Five friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from 20 years earlier unwittingly become humankind's only hope for survival.
Director: Edgar Wright
Stars: Rosamund Pike, Simon Pegg, Martin Freeman, Nick Frost
From the creator of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz – need I say more?

Also releasing – The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

Movie Review

Solomon Kane
After waiting years, I finally got to see this film!
A mercenary’s soul is bound for hell as punishment for his deeds, but he seeks redemption by helping an innocent family. Watching it gave me some serious D&D flashbacks. It has that vibe to it and the action was really good.
The acting was also good. James Purefoy was perfect as the lead. It was also nice to see Pete Postlethwaite in one of his last roles.
It’s not an epic film, but they did a lot with a very small budget.
As a Christian, I really dug the message of the film – every soul is redeemable.
Recommended – and after viewing this film, I told my wife that it was much, much better than The Wolverine!

Need a good laugh? (Did you watch Bambi Meets Godzilla?) Ready for some free books or a commitment to a goal? Anyone else see Solomon Kane? And what movies catch your eye for August?

Monday I have a special announcement regarding CassaStorm! Stay tuned…

  1. Ah, Bambi Meets Godzilla is a classic! I can't remember the first time I saw this it was so far back. The wiggly claws at the end are a nice touch.

Congrats to everyone, and *whew* so many movies in August, huh? I wonder when the kids will start begging.

  6. Some great films coming... Percy is the one for us... Kick Ass 2, just turned wishy-washy on cause of Jim Carrey's need to re-think violence... nice attempt to let us know the film is violent and free plug for it... thanks for reverse psychology?

congrats to Micheal on new venture.

Who is this Gary, person... people keep talking about? Double-Wink!

See I can do it to, Mr. Carrey!

And Simon Pegg?! Nuff said. Live that guy.

  8. Great movie preview Alex. I am highly intrigued by Two Guns and Elysium. I have been away from the blog for about 10 days due to vacation - did you review or see The Conjuring?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Looking forward to Elysium, and Michael's new venture looks exciting, such talent!

  11. I want to see several of these movies, but wasn't sure about a couple. You've swayed me toward at least one of those I wasn't sure about.
I missed Solomon Kane when it came out as well and will have to check it out. Thanks for the review.
Congrats to Rachel, JW, and Milo as well as Michael for his business venture.
I look forward to your CassaStorm announcement!

  12. I'm looking forward to City of Bones and the Percy Jackson movie, though I'm sure I'll wait to rent one of them.

Looking forward to your announcement. Reading CassaStorm right now and enjoying it.

  13. There is a lot coming out in Aug I'd like to see. More than most months. Really want to see Solomon Kane but keep forgetting it exists. I'll catch it soon.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Sean, I think it came out about the same time as Hardware Wars. Another classic.

    Annalisa, nothing wrong with that!

Optimistic, I haven't seen it. Might catch it this weekend. Great buzz around the film.

Michelle, you're welcome. Sorry I was a day late.

    Natalie, that's good to know!

Rusty, it finally appeared on NetFlix - dump it in your queue, you'll dig it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I remember seeing Bambi meets Godzilla at the theaters before Godzilla 1985.
    I can't wait for The World’s End.
    I love Simon Pegg!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Poor Bambi. Funny tho.

Lots of new films out and new books, congratulations to all the new authors.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Bambi vs Godzilla= Classic. I remember seeing this video everywhere. I think I even remember the premium movie channels showing it before whatever flick was starting.

I want to see The Wold's End. Shaun of the Dead creator and cast plus the actor from Hitchhiker's Guide--Aw-w-w-wesome.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Solomon Kane is noe I really want to see. 2 Guns looks interesting as well! Big congrats to Michael, didn't know he was making copyright services as well...Guess I missed that, then again I have been a bit dizzy as late!

    ReplyDelete
  19. As usual, so many intriguing movies coming out.
I'm a little dubious of Planes ... I think it's going to be too similar to Cars.

Oh, you liked Solomon Kane more than The Wolverine? Really? Now I want to watch it ...

    ReplyDelete
  20. Liked the sound of the World's End, think it is at our little cinema in our medieval market town. Recently had the new star trek movie, thought it was terrific.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I am looking forward to the Percy Jackson movie. Michael's new venture will be wonderful for writers looking for editors (he does such a good job with blurbs).
Looking forward eagerly to the CassaStorm announcement on Monday.

    ReplyDelete
  22. All the new movies sound great. And yah! I will get them here in Mexico. thanks for the laugh with Bambi, and also the heads up on Solomon Kane. Hope Netflix has it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ha! My husband said almost the exact same thing when we saw the Planes movie preview. :)

I'm still trying to get up the nerve to see THE CONJURING in the theater....

    ReplyDelete
  24. Loving the look of 2 Guns!

And I shall be back on Monday :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. I am definitely in for some Kick Ass2. I thought the first one was seriously under rated. Soloman Kane sounds like fun, too; I do like James Purefoy :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Elysium's previews have been exciting. I really hope the movie holds up. I like Damon when he's in his tough guy roles. :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Lots of news! My brain is still trying to assimilate it all...

    Solomon Kane sounds good. :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. I have to check out some of the Ninja news.

Believe it or not, even though my movie viewing is far below average, I've actually seen "Bambi vs. Godzilla."

    ReplyDelete
  29. My brother had a similar response to the redemptive quality of The Dark Knight as you did to Solomon Kane.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I really liked the first Kick Ass myself. AS for Elysium, wow that basic idea has been done to death almost.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Elysium is SO my kind of movie...I can't wait to see it. And I saw Rachel's news on Publishers Marketplace today. So excited for her.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 2 guns, kick ass and worlds end for sure for me. Bambi technically only met godzilla's foot.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I liked Kick Ass and am looking forward to the sequel.

I saw where Jim Carey said he regretted accepting a role in the movie. But hey, its not like Hollywood is beating down his door these days with 5 star movie scripts.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Siv, you had other things going on.

Julian, it wasn't great but it was much better.

    Leigh, they do.

Madeline, I want to see that film.

    Sandra, that's funny.

    Charles, yes it has.

    Pat - true!

    Stephen, not anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Even though I'm not a movie goer, much prefer to watch stuff in my living room..the Washington and Wahlberg will be one hubby and I would probably enjoy.

    Wall of Honor

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks for the movie reviews. I think I'd like to see Solomon Kane. Perhaps 2 Guns and the Millers (sounds corney, like me) could leave a movie ticket stub in my pocket.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Bambi Meets Godzilla is AMAZING!!! My favorite part:

marv newland produced by mr.&mrs. newland.

    Thanks for sharing it, Alex.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I didn't know you played Dungeons & Dragons! So did I. You never talk about it, and now I know it's something we have in common :).

I haven't seen the Europa Report, but io9 raves about it in just about every post they put up. They also said it's available to watch online right now for free (I was gonna knock it off the list this weekend).

    Congratulations to Michael Gesu.

I plan on seeing Elysium, but I just don't understand how an artificial ring in the sky can somehow have all the good stuff from Earth. Earth is planet-sized and the ring-sized thing in the sky would have to get imports all the time from Earth. You just wouldn't have the resources for an entire civilization.

Or maybe I just need to see the movie. But it already doesn't make much sense to me. Ringworld by Larry Niven made much more sense because Ringworld was HUGE.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Bambi Meets Godzilla is a true classic. I'm looking forward to THE WORLD ENDS and CITY OF BONES. You can get SOLOMON KANE at Wal-Mart for only ten dollars! How cool is that?

    ReplyDelete
  40. None of these sound interesting to me. Am I too jaded? Hollywood doesn't do anything that sounds terribly inventive or interesting to me these days...

    Thanks for the previews!

    ReplyDelete
  41. "Bambi meets Godzilla" is a YouTube video befoe YouTube. BTW that Facebook WWII page is hilarious! Thanks for the link.

    ReplyDelete
  42. There's so many movies I want to see in August: Europa Report, Elysium, Jobs, Paranoia, and The Butler. I have to see Blue Jasmine and Fruitvale Station yet. It's overwhelming how many movies there are out there, but I still manage to see most of
    them at the cineplex.

I've been noticing this trend in Hollywood's mainstream films: they lack originality and are very predictable. It seems everything is for the money and it is. But to be able to do that they must produce a story that SELLS. I'm getting tired and sick of it, but at least indie films helps a little bit.

Awesome movie preview and commentary, Alex!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'll check this Solomon Kane movie soon. It looks interesting!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Julia, glad you caught that!!

Michael, I played D&D for years. Not sure why I rarely mention it. Elysium has several issues it will need to answer to be good. Just wish the concept was more original.

Roland, I just might buy it!

    Maurice, glad you enjoyed it!

Livia, August is a landslide of movies. Original ones though? Not many.

    Zoltan, you would enjoy it!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Bambi Meets Godzilla was an extra on the Godzila 1985 VHS release. I remember just about dying from laughter when I first watched it as a kid.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I saw Solomon Kane a few years ago. It was one of the very first comic mini-series I ever bought. I plan to watch it again now that netflix finally has it.

This is the first year in a long time where there are a bunch of movies I want to see coming out in August. Probably won't make it to many of them, though. Planes is probably guaranteed.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I ahdn't heard of Europa Report...it looks cool, thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Elysium looks like it might be action with a brain, which would be nice.

    mood

    ReplyDelete
  49. It was only a matter of time before someone did a exploration movie about Europa, and I'm all in!

Elysium looks sick. I'll be there opening day! :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Lots of movies coming out. I kind of want to see World's End. Martin Freeman, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost....yep. I also want to try and get my hands on Shaun of the Dead, I've heard that one is funny.

Had no idea Planes was a Disney movie. I thought it was a continuation of the Cars films. That's rather a let down. I thought the Disney, Pixar copy thing was over by now.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Thanks for including my news, Alex!
I can't wait to hear Monday's special announcement!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. It's been years since I last saw Bambi Meets Godzilla. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Alex, that clip was so mean... but funny. Loved all the credits... LOL.

THANKS for the shout out! I really appreciate it!

Congrats to all with their various projects!

Definitely will be back Monday to check out your news!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I have to see End of the World...loved the other two movies.

What a lot of news. So happy for my fellow bloggers!

Adding Soloman Kane to my "to rent" list!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I was really hoping for a twist in the video...like maybe Bambi kicks Godzilla's butt. Alas, twas not to be.

Maybe 2 Guns will live up to what I'm hoping for. Could be fun.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Lots of movies coming out! Look forward to your announcement.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Thanks for the movie previews.
Elysium is defintely on my list. Based on the trailers so far I have some expectations.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Lots of awesome news!
I'm really looking forward to The World's End. It's previewing at the Fantasia film festival in Montreal three weeks earlier than anywhere else - but the tickets are already sold out! :-(

    ReplyDelete
  59. Of all the movies you've mentioned here today, Solomon Kane sounds the most interesting. I'll have to put that on my Netflix list.

    ReplyDelete
  60. The World's End and We're the Millers look like the could be good! I know a lot of kids who will want to see Planes. :)

  61. Alex-

I am a big fan of Solomon Kane (all things Robert E. Howard)-is this a new movie?

I was totally unaware of this until seeing your post title on my dashboard.

    Larry

    ReplyDelete
  62. I almost forgot-

Have been a fan of "Bambi Vs. Godzilla since seeing it in high school way back in the late seventies.

I think the filmakers captured Bambi's poignant innocence, and really developed her character.

The plot is intricate, with subtexts and subplots, neatly tied together and culminating in the tragedy of the Godzilla encounter.

Truly a masterpiece on every level....

    Larry

    ReplyDelete
  63. I enjoyed Solomon Kane when I saw it, good and bleak, Guns and Kick Ass 2 sound good to me but Jim Carrey has denounced the violence in the movie?

    ReplyDelete
  64. I love animated films but Planes just doesn't catch my attention. I love Bambi Meets Godzilla though!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I am so far behind on my movie watching. I haven't made it to the theatre all summer long. I guess I will be watching everything on DVD. ::sigh::

    ReplyDelete
  66. I enjoyed the WW2 thing. Clever.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Wow, 2 Guns sounds like a good one! Thanks a ton, Alex, for announcing the Emblazon freebie eBook promo!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I've seen Bambi Meets Godzilla years ago! Hehehe. So funny to see it pop up again. Ooh, a special announcement! I'm intrigued.

    ReplyDelete
  69. John, I saw it even before that. Funny stuff.

Andrew, sorry. And someone said you can buy it at Walmart for ten bucks.

Moody, it would be a change!

Jack, I guess not. And you need to watch Shaun of the Dead!

    Rachel, you're welcome.

    Michael, you are welcome!

    Edi, hoping it's good.

Deniz, Jamie over in Wales has already seen it.

Larry, that made me laugh!! Solomon Kane came out three years ago and then got tied up in a studio battle. It's finally on NetFlix now.

Fran, that's what makes the movie.

    Lynn, you're welcome!

    ReplyDelete
  70. We're the Millers looks like it could be good for some laughs. I thought the same thing when I saw a commercial for Planes - Cars with Wings.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I am so out of the loop that it's not funny....thank goodness for Ninja News! :)

Congrats to Michael, I'm going to head over and see what he's offering.

I had no clue Solomon Kane was even out...I'll have to go check it out...thanks, Alex! :)

    ReplyDelete
  72. Elysium looks FANTASTIC. And I just came back from listening to an ad for 2 Guns on the car radio!

    ReplyDelete
  73. The Bambi film is an instant Best Short nominee!!

I am in for 2 Guns, Elysium, Kick-Ass 2, and Paranoia.

Just saw the trailer for Solomon Kane on another DVD and I am really anxious to see it.

Can't wait to see what the buzz is about on Monday...with CassaStorm.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I saw the WWII in Facebook piece before, and it eventually led me to the mammoth work of genius it's excerpted from, the entire history of the world on Facebook. Whoever created it had way too much time on his or her hands, but it's hilarious to read.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Mark, you'll dig it!

    Chuck, you'll like the announcement.

Carrie-Anne, can you imagine the hours it took to put it together?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Wow, lots of news! Congratulations to everyone and I'm going to have to go check them out.

Movies: 2 Guns, The World's End (for sure!) and you listed a couple I'm not aware of, so I need to check them out. I'm off to C. Lee's place to read about you. Then Lurker. Wow, you've given me a lot of homework :)

I also hadn't heard of Solomon Kane. Thanks for the head's up!

    ReplyDelete
  77. ALEX!

    Wassup?????

Coolness on the movies. We want to see the new Percy Jackson. Well, my son and I do. :) We liked the first one. It wasn't Oscar worthy but it was fun.

I will definitely see World's End! LOVE SIMON!

Too funny about Bambi. Squish happens. :)

    Enjoy your writing and editing!

  78. I'm looking forward to 2 Guns. Those guys should be great together. Might check out Solomon Kane. Sounds like my kind of movie.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Great post! Thanks for sharing! Goodbye....

Nah, would I do that? After skimming, um after thoroughly reading your fact-filled, fun-filled, festival of frivolity and frenetic fancies, I note Bassan did real well over at another one of my adoring fan's site, the legend that is C. Lee McKenzie.

Oh deer, poor Bambi! *Splat!* Thanks for sharing that all time classic movie. Bambi Vs Godzilla, a poignant film, I guess. I have no idea who this Gary is. I shall have a check of the link to his site. Thanks!

I shall stay tuned and sit here in front of my computer screen waiting for your special announcement...............................................

    ReplyDelete
  80. I got to say, I've never even heard of Solomon Kane. For the movies coming out, I'd go for The World's End and We're the Millers. The rest can wait until they're on television.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I haven't completely given up on getting to catch movies in the theaters, but I'm eyeing the announcements from a distance lol!!

Love that Michael is offering his services. Wishing him the best with his newest endeavor.

And you have a new announcement? What is it? What is it?

    ReplyDelete
  82. Hey Alex, loved seeing your Intro at Michael's today. Your writing has really tightened up since CassaStar! Practise makes perfect, or nearly, don't you think?

So much going on in the bloggy world. Now, what could your new announcement be? We all wait with baited breath...

    ReplyDelete
  83. Somehow that dark and morbid snippet, Bambi meets Godzilla, is hysterical.

I've enjoyed the previews of Planes, but I didn't realize it was Disney's rip-off of Pixar's Cars. So I think I'll pass.

Be well, Alex. I'm already excited for your special announcement.

    xoRobyn

  84. That video was hilarious. I'm looking forward to seeing Elysium and We're the Millers. I haven't seen the trailer for Kick Ass 2, so I should go check it out.

    Robin, it is funny!

    Misha, you're welcome.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Bambi vs Godzilla was awesome. That kind of humor is right up my alley.

Also, a big thanks to Disney for really phoning it in with Planes. "Hey, Cars was successful, so let's make the exact same movie except with airplanes. And let's hire Dane Cook to star in it. Everyone loves him."

Stay tuned for Disney's Boats (2014), Trains (2015), and Golf Carts (2016), which stars Jack Black as a lovable golf cart that just wishes it could race at the track! BRILLIANT!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Can't wait for your announcement...

    ReplyDelete
  94. I've not heard of Solomon Kane. Sounds great!!! Can't wait to read your announcement! Woot!

    ReplyDelete
  95. I'm dying to see Elysium and Kick Ass2.

    ReplyDelete
  96. They all sound pretty interesting. Which is a good sign. That's not always the case, eh. Have you seen Hemlock Grove or Hell on Wheels yet? We're watching them on Netflix. Thanks for the reviews, Alex.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I'm going to see a couple of those movies. My husband is excited for Planes. I had no idea there were that many big names in it! I should have guessed.

    ReplyDelete
  98. The World's End sounds pretty funny and I can't watch Bambi this morning but it's a classic and it's definitely funny!

    ReplyDelete
  99. Ooh, what news???

I loved the first Kick Ass too, in all its violent, irreverent glory.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Brandon and Bryan, those are brilliant! They will be followed by Segway in 2017.

Joylene, watched Hemlock Grove. Didn't like the way it ended.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Oh, I want to see The World's End and 2 Guns!

Oh, sad to see Bambi go like that~

We need to party, so much wonderful news! Congrats to all :D

I loved your movie reviews-off to visit the links! Stay Ninja cool!

    ReplyDelete
  102. I've seen every Pixar movie except for Cars, which didn't really interest me, and Planes is sort of falling into the same category. Also, it's weird that Pixar didn't make this new film!

    ReplyDelete
  103. I hadn't heard of World's End, but it's going on the TBW list. I've been looking forward to Elysium for awhile. Solomon Kane sounds really good too!

  105. I remember Bambi vs Godzilla!! We used to watch that all the time as kids. Good times.

I'm excited about Elysium, and i haven't heard of Europa before, and i'm not a huge fan of found footage, but it sounds right up my alley.
Definitely excited about At World's End and Kick Ass 2. I won't be seeing Mortal Instruments since Cassandra Clare is a plagiartist so i don't want to give her any money

    ReplyDelete
  106. I've heard about 'Solomon Kane,' but I've never seen it. As a Christian, I love redemption stories too. I would like to see 'Europa Report,' but you're right the found footage style is as old as stale bread. I'm so tired of it. Good luck with CassaStorm. I would like to read the series!

  107. Thanks for the Ninja and movie updates! Glad to hear about Michael's new business.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Kick Ass 2 and Elysium are on my list for sure. I remember the first time I saw Bambi Meets Godzilla. I was totally surprised (for some reason).

    ReplyDelete
  109. Bambi vs Godzilla. Oh man. I remember this from years ago.

Solomon Kane sounds really good. How come this is the first I've heard of it? Wow. I'm out of the loop.

I know it's belated, but I will check out McKenzie's blog.

  110. so looking forward to Kick Ass 2! Elysium looks awesome as well:)

  111. Finally, a bunch of movie releases I can appreciate. "We're the Millers" looks like fun. And if "Elysium" is anywhere as good as District 9, it will be a winner. "2 Guns" should be good too.

Looks like I need to clear my schedule and go to the movies.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Europa Report. My kind of movie. To seek out new lifeforms on strange civilisations sounds corny but Jupiter sounds exciting!

The Worlds End sounds great, Peg will undoubtedly shine like he did in Shaun of the Dead. Thanks for the ninja movie news Alex.

    ReplyDelete
  113. An excellent review! Two thumbs up on quite a few of them, but We're The Millers, Europa Report and 2 Guns sound intriguing.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I love your movie reviews, but you could increase the snarky comments, since that's my favorite part. They sound like some good DVD movies. I'm worried about Planes. Cars was so good, and so original...and I don't see that happening here. Andrew Leon wrote a good piece about how Disney ain't Pixar and it's a shame...

  115. Ah, I LOVE your movie posts!! Seriously, they always put me in touch with what's worth watching and what's not. Kind of worried about Planes not being as strong as Cars but will still watch it in the theater anyway. Also, I'm FINALLY reading your amazing novel and will obviously wait until the end to write out my thoughts to you but WOW you are incredible and talented and inspiring and this is the longest run-on ever. Seriously, so proud to be connected with you in the blogging world!!!

    ReplyDelete
  116. I have Planes on my calendar for the 9th so I don't forget. We (by we I mean my preschooler) have been waiting for it what seems like FOREVER.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I wrote about Solomon Kane years ago, but still havent seen it - I'll take your recommendation as a definite push to see it finally :)

    ReplyDelete
  118. Hi Alex .. loved Bassan's interview with Lee McKenzie .. and also Michael's art work and creativity with his intro for Cassa Storm ..

Why Tokyo in the film I've no idea - but I'm sure there's some important reference to Godzilla .. and like Sean I love the closing of the toes!

    Cheers Hilary

  119. Love Bambi Meets Godzilla! Thanks for all the updates, including all the new movie releases. I can't wait to see some, and will take a pass on others. lol

    ReplyDelete
  120. Ella, Bambi had it coming.

Julie, it's as if Disney is competing with itself.

Sarah, I didn't know that about Clare.

MsMariah, I'd be honored if you did read it!

Jay, it came out several years ago and finally hit video last month.

Tina, I will try to increase the snark next month. I was a little pressed for time this month.

Saumya, thank you! Wow, I'm flattered.

Jamie, you would really dig it.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I'm blinking at the plot of "World's End." Can't imagine how this ended up being made into a film!

    ReplyDelete
  122. Love the snarky comments, Alex. They make the reviews! Saw the preview for Planes when I took my kids to see Despicable Me 2. I didn't see Cars, and Planes seems even less interesting. Kid movies are the only ones I see in theaters anymore.

  124. Mystery. I know I left a comment for you Wednesday but I don't see it there today.
    Puzzle.

    HELLO!

My son and I want to see Percy Jackson but I really want to see World's End! How can we go wrong?

    Thanks for all the info.

Hope you are having fun editing/writing!

    Heather

  125. Darn those lucky Brits! I just started watching Spaced with Simon Pegg and now I really want to see The World's End!

    ReplyDelete
  126. I'll admit, when I saw my teenagers had watched Kick Ass (the first), I about died, until I watched it myself. Don't get me wrong, I still died a little inside knowing they'd seen it, but I loved it. What a hilarious movie. I can't wait to see the second one!

Oh, and I did read your post about blogging from my phone, which I can't comment from. Don't ask. But "so not techie" has something to do with it.

I'm the worst when it comes to following / commenting in an organized fashion. I rely on my squishy, goo-filled brain. Not so reliable. But don't think for one second that you or any of my bloggy friends don't cross my mind on a weekly basis (sometimes daily). Because y'all do. I just get behind. Hugs. :)

  127. Elizabeth, add aliens and anything is possible.

    Heather, sorry if it vanished...

Candilynn, thanks! And that's all right if you couldn't comment.

    ReplyDelete
  128. You know I love a good redemption story, and I'll watch anything with James Purefoy in it!

    ReplyDelete
  129. Jam packed full of interesting stuff as usual, Alex! Oh how I've missed stopping by and visiting your blog since last June. Yes, laughter is always helpful and necessary...a must have, even in the most dire situations:) Happy Friday to you, kind sir!

    ReplyDelete
  130. It was great to have Bassan visit last week. I know people who checked in liked him a lot.

No movies this week. This is the week of non-stop company.

    Looking forward to your announcement.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Thanks for the movie info, Alex! A lot of these look good, especially that one you reviewed.

    ReplyDelete
  132. I feel like I have been gone forever. I actually really want to see 2 Guns. I also have to take my daughter to see Sea of Monsters as the Percy books were the first novels she read.
I did laugh at the Bambi meets Godzilla. I actually have one of the old Godzilla toys from the 80's on my desk.

    ReplyDelete
  133. I hadn't heard of Solomon Kane before, but maybe I'll check it out. Purefoy is cool, and I was always a big Postlethwaite fan. The only August movie I'm really looking forward to is City of Bones. Reading the book right now and liking it. Hopefully they do a good job. Elysium really won't be for me, and the others are just meh. Have a great weekend, Alex! :D

    ReplyDelete
  134. I have seen Bambi versus Godzilla before... always good for a laugh.

I think I've seen all the summer movies I want to see...

Alex, our paths have crossed a number of times- we follow some of the same blogs. I'm one of the administrators for Authors for Oklahoma, Shelly's page. Would it be possible for you to make some mention of the initiative? We're trying to muster up more of a response, and we've extended our deadline by a week... the details are here.

  135. Great movie lineup! The Elysium previews are missing a fundamental element in any hook: why the hell is he breaking in and risking his life? They never elaborate on that in any of the trailers I've seen. Super stoked about Kick Ass 2 and I may see World's End, too.

    Happy Friday!

    ReplyDelete
  136. MJ, we've missed you!!

Lee, he and I really appreciated it.

Brandon, so do I. And I used to have ones from Japan when we lived there.

William, I'd be glad to plug it again for you and Shelly!

    Alexia, good point.

  137. Sorry really late visiting this post! Thanks for the movie reviews. Bambi meets Godzilla, poor Bambi!

    ReplyDelete
  138. Thanks for the movie update, and the laugh with Bambi meets Godzilla. I'm looking forward to Percy Jackson:Sea of Monsters and City of Bones. I'll have to check out Solomon Kane, too.

  139. Happy weekend, Alex. Poor Bambi!

    ReplyDelete
  140. Some 'maybe' movies on your list for me - 2 Guns, We're the Millers and Paranoia.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Hey Alex, I'm just popping over for a long overdue visit. Life has been crazy and just when I thought things were finally settling down a bit my son got hurt - right back to crazy times! Hope all has been well in your world :)

    ReplyDelete
  142. Thanks for all the movie reviews! I might have overlooked Solomon Kane but for your mention of it--redemption is a big theme for me as well, so I'm heading right on over to Netflix from here.
I'm looking forward to all those great sci-fi flicks coming up soon!

    ReplyDelete
  143. I'd never seen Bambi vs Godzilla, but guessed the ending. My husband thought it was funny.

No movies out there to interest me this go around. Maybe next month.

Michael is helping me on a project, excellent!

    ReplyDelete
  144. Sounds like some great movies. Will have to check out Solomon Kane. I'm looking forward to the new Percy Jackson that is coming out next week. Have a great weekend! :) Best to you.

  145. Martha, really sorry about your son.

Kirsten, you will really enjoy it.

    Yolanda, that's great.

    Hey Mr. Lonely!

    ReplyDelete
  146. So are you going to be reviewing Airplanes and We're the Millers for us???? Please!!!! :D

I haven't heard of the other ones. They didn't show the trailers in my writing cave, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  147. 2 Guns and Elysium are the two I want to see.

    Have a good weekend Alex.

  148. Hey ALex! Looks like the summer of sci-fi continues! Wouldn't mind seeing all these films actually.

    ReplyDelete
  149. I'm always a late, but I always show up. Maybe I’m the only one who sees it, but 2 Guns seems like a twist on Tango and Cash, but I still want to see it…and yeah I’m excited about Kick-Ass 2
Thanks for the Solomon Kane Review. Hadn’t heard of it.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Meet the Millers sounds like it could be really funny or really bad.

I wish Michael luck with his new job.

    ReplyDelete
  151. i am not sure i really want school to start this week...between the Miller's movie...and the new TV show about the Millers i am sure i will be the butt of endless jokes...ha....

    ReplyDelete
  152. Gosh, so much to comment on.

Films I can't wait to watch (now you've bought them to my attention):

    Elysium
    Kick Ass 2
    The World’s End
    Solomon Kane

Definitely going to check out what Michael Di Gesu has to offer (I'm hoping it's cheap) :D

And loved Bambi Meets Godzilla :)

  153. Really looking forward to ELYSIUM and KICK ASS; saw WOLVERINE yesterday, and it was a lot of fun. Thanks for the shout out, Alex!

    ReplyDelete
  154. haha I haven't seen that Bambi short in years. Still makes me laugh.

    Congrats to Milo.

I just had to buy a new dryer so I won't be seeing any films this month. Bummer.

    ReplyDelete
  155. I CANNOT wait for World's End. I typically don't get jazzed up about movie releases....but you can bet your bottom that MY bottom will be in a theater seat on opening night :D

    ReplyDelete
  156. Stina, doubt I'll be seeing Planes...

PK, and it's an awesome science fiction summer.

Eternal, I'd forgotten about Tango and Cash.

    Brian, I'm sorry!

Shah, don't know about cheap, but it's quality.

    Milo, you're welcome!

Randi Lee, they are really hyping it up.
