A to Z Challenge – Underworld and Under a Glass Moon, Plus Ninja News

My theme for the A to Z Challenge is Favorite Movies, Bloggers, and Music! I’ll name a favorite movie that corresponds with the letter, and then select a character from the film. I will then name a favorite blogger who reminds me of that character, and then dedicate a song to him. (Also corresponding with the alphabet.) I’ll wrap it all up with trivia and/or fun facts about the movie, the blogger, or the music!

In addition, two lucky commenters this month will receive a review copy of CassaStorm! One comment per day and each is worth one entry except – the first and one hundredth comments on each day will receive ten entries!

Underworld

I’m sure this selection comes as no surprise! (Had it not been for Kate in black leather, I would’ve picked The Usual Suspects.) Vampires versus werewolves – just can’t go wrong with that combination.

Selena is loyal to her clan and justice. She’s there in the shadows, ready to take down evil, and proud of who she is. Selena is also just bad-ass cool. Who wouldn’t want to hang with someone like her?

Who is Selena?

Allison at Geek Banter!!

(Minus the leather outfit, although it wouldn’t surprise me if she knew how to use a sword and crossbow.)

Her profile states right up front that she loves Jesus, which is very admirable. And from that point, she becomes even more cool as she reveals her geeky side. For those into games, fantasy, science fiction, and other geek pursuits, that makes her beyond awesome. I’d definitely hang with Allison.

Allison is a writer, reviewer, gamer, and resident geek expert.

To you I dedicate Under a Glass Moon by Dream Theater. (Song title leads to YouTube.)

You will appreciate the music and the imagery. “Beneath a summer sky, Under a glass moonlight, Night awaits the lamb’s arrival…”

Trivia and Facts:

In Greek mythology, “Selene” means what…?

T’s trivia answer - The largest independent college of contemporary music in the world is Berklee College of Music, located in Boston.

  8. Yay for Allison. I love reading her blog, even though a lot of the time I don't know what she's talking about - people still play computer games, apparently :-)

  10. I seem to recall that Selene refers to the moon or moon goddess. So says Cynthia, whose name also references the same thing.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I agree with Cynthia - Selene is something to do with the moon.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I love Underworld, great series!

Will certainly check out Roland's post! Sounds like a fun read! I am intrigued.

    ReplyDelete
  13. i say this lightly... i am not a fan of the underworld films. i have tried to watch them, i find myself falling asleep... until the last film, which worked for me. now you and i both love is it for the lovely kate. i tried to watch total recall for that very reason, though she is lovely... gar the film should be forgotten.

sorry i have been off the grid, sadly my sickness is slowly killing me as we have talked... so i have been playing catch up, again. i have been loose on the blog world writing some insane responses to post...

    may your day be grand...

  14. Selene has something to do with the moon I think...And you have some dedicated followers. Twelve comments already!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Bet Allison will be over the moon at your choice,
Do I have to sit up all night to be first in the comments? will try and remember the I.S.W.G next week. The time is passing so fast.

  17. Yay for Underworld and Alison (sans leather! Awwww - but leather is ever so sexy!)!!!

Selene - erm... I'm guessing - Sensual?! Sexy? Leather? Running away now...

  19. Underworld - great choice for U!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Underworld's a great movie and there's a reason Selene was the only female on my sexiest vampires list. Kate played her well in both the acting and looks department. Can't wait for CassaStorm.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Good luck with the new book Alex, your other two have amazing rankings on Amazon :). Congrats and good luck.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Underworld is one of the few franchises to never really have a terrible entry.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Somehow I knew you would work Kate and Underworld into this. ;) Geek Banter sounds like a fantastic place so I'll have to head over there.

I love Underworld, but prefer Rise of the Lycans as I am a werewolf gal. Vampires suck! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  24. Holy bananas! Next Wednesday is IWSG!! That snuck up on me. Where did this month go?

Underworld is a great movie. I admit, I would love to have Kate's talents. She can rock that leather outfit.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Underworld was pretty good. Nice choice. Good luck on getting Cassastorm to page one. It's going to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I know nothing about this Underworld of which you speak! (Hangs head.) :)

Always love geeks! Will have to check out Geek Banter and Allison.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Underworld is perfect to celebrate the letter U. I think you already know how much I LUV that series. Just awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Underworld sounds good. Voted. Awesome that you're on page one.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The Underworld series was the featured entertainment at one of my family reunions a few years ago, and yes the guys all loved the female lead in the black leather, but the kids liked the kick-ass action, and I couldn't believe that the same guy who played Billy Mack in Love Actually could also play a vicious vampire leader.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm embarassed to admit that I have never seen Underworld. I need to rectify that!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Congrats to Allison!

And Alex you're now on page one and its not even 8am! YAY!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I don't know Allison, but I LOVE the title of her blog :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Underworld is a definite fave. It even made a cameo in FOTB :-)

Going to get my vote on.

    Have a wonderful day :-)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Second post with Underworld. A good movie, lots of actions and tight black leather!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yay, Allison!
I'll have to check out you shrill--I mean, not shrilling... ;)
    I've never been into vampires.
    Ready for the IWSG!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Kate in black leather trumps just about everything, doesn't she? :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Big fan of Kate Beckinsale! I wrote about her for A to Z under S for Sexy Vampires.

    Precious Monsters

  44. Alexandra, you were!

    Mel, probably not!

    Rachna, I'm sure I will.

    Lynda, thanks, and I'm predictable, aren't I?

    Annalisa, yes we do.

    Cynthia and Patsy, very good.

Jeremy, she was the only reason I watched the remake. And no apologies - you take care of yourself.

    Imogen, yes it does.

    Moody, I will!

    Thanks, Unikorna.

    Melissa, funny!

    Kim, he was vicious.

  46. Love Allison, already follow. Will head to good reads, and then I gotta hear you shrill...
Not into vampires or werewolves...but I can understand why you're fascinated with Kate...me? I'll take Jack Carter (played by Colin Ferguson) of Eureka. Which you must watch if you don't. Five fab seasons on netflix.

  47. I am so not surprised to see Kate here for "U".

    ReplyDelete
  48. Kate in leather sure can't be beat, one vampire movie I didn't mind. The sequels though just get worse and worse. And voted too at the goodreads zoo.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Other than Linda Hamilton in T2, Kate Beckinsale is my favorte kick ass heroine. Mila is third

    ReplyDelete
  50. I love Underworld. Kate is the best as Selene- vampire v. werewolf is my next post! (with a Jaybird twist, of course)

    ReplyDelete
  51. It always makes my day when I see Allison commenting on my blog -- she is fun and insightful.

I enjoyed the UNDERWORLD's with Kate -- I didn't bother with the one minus her. I watched TOTAL RECALL just for her. Ouch! I had a blind date with someone like her character in that.

I'm happy that you enjoyed your being shang-haied in my tale. It must have been that shrilled! Although Romulan Ale has done in even Captain Kirk!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Voted at Goodreads, even though they don't make it easy.

Don't know Allison, but will check her out.

AND it's IWSG next week ALREADY?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Woah, Alex, I am beyond honoured that you picked me--and as Selena too!? Thanks so much. I'd definitely hang with you as well! And I DO know how to throw knives and play airsoft... does that count? ;) Voted on Goodreads!

    Allison (Geek Banter)

  54. I didn't know what shrill is so I had to look for it in the dictionary. Then I woke up the shredder Chihuahua dog with a really thunderous laughter. The first thing that came to mind was this scene from Mulan where the Emperor's adviser is saying to the soldiers he doesn't scream like a girl and the next thing he does is screaming like a girl. Now instead of a Chinese adviser I see a Ninja. And then the panic dance, I mean, my imagination left you no dignity. But take comfort in the idea the whole thing has just brightened my day and that, as always, the dragon takes energy from laughter.
I voted for book already and I was just wondering when would you mention *this* movie. I knew it had to be there somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I must go read that interview. It sounds like a lot of fun.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Alex, you rock, even if you are frazzled by teddy bears dressed up like Spock. I also enjoyed visiting Geek Banter. Your books are on my list of must reads. I have a few ahead of them, but I'm definitely planning to visit Smashwords and pick up my copy.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Just voted for CassaStorm and it was already up to page 1. Yay! :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Loved Underworld, and its sequel, both of which I happily own :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Just voted! And I really enjoyed the Underworld series too, Kate kicks butt!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Sounds right. I can;t wait for CassaStorm, either. It's been a while sine I went to Geek Banter ... headed their now. :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. Icy Sedgwick is also doing a big one on Underworld today. Worth reading! My favorite part of the movie was its suggestion that a Vampire + Werewolf equation gives you an Orc.

    John at The Bathroom Monologues

    ReplyDelete
  62. I voted, but it took me a little bit to find it. CassaStar was on page 4 on my screen.

Don't forget - Selene was also HOT.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Huzzah for Allison - she's really cool!!!
    Selene - sea?
    I'll vote on Goodreads!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Ah, Mark Twain, that must have been fun. I hear he has a great sense of humour. So... what'd you have for lunch!?

    ReplyDelete
  65. I have never seen any of the Underworld movies. They are somewhere on my Netflix Queue. I will have to take your word that Kate in a leather outfit is better than Verbal.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I TOTALLY enjoyed Underworld... Kate is a stunning woman and in black leather.... *&%$ need I say more. LOl.

Have to drop by and say HI to allison...

Finally winding down. Only Z to write. This month certainly flew, but it was a lot of work ... but well worth it.

Off to vote and visit allison...

    ReplyDelete
  67. I've never seen Underworld, but that was my first thought when I thought of "U". Not surprising that Kate Beckinsale made it here Alex. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  68. Voted!

And Selena is a reference to the moon, right? So we have a gal in wolf's garb? And she's bad-ass cool? My! My! Quite a combination of fascinating elements.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Allison is a worthy blogger to note! I can't believe IWSG is next week! April has flown by so fast!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Selene means Moon. Have a great day!

    ReplyDelete
  71. I totally Googled Selene in Greek mythology... Cheated, I know. It is Latin for moon, so she is the moon-goddess. ;D

I voted for CassaStorm! I've got your back, Ninja Alex.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Love Underworld and I'm a fan of Kate... not necessarily in leather lol

    Voted for CassaStorm ;)

    ReplyDelete
  73. I enjoy Roland's Twain and will have to hear what he does to you Alex. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Selena is a form of Selene and means moon. It fits for a nightwalker of the Underworld.

I actually enjoyed Underworld. I've been getting back to watching movies a bit more. I think the past few months I've been on a sensory overload and so movies and even a few of my favorite shows have gone by the wayside.

I was in the mood to watch a movie and so watched Underworld and another favorite of mine, Pitch Black with Vin Diesel. Haven't seen it for awhile.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Werewolves vs vampires is great in Underworld. The only way it could be better is to add zombies into the mix.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Very cool! I'm off to meet the Amazing Allison ;D

    Happy Wednesday Captain!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Allison is awesome and always has cool things up on her blog. I'd recommend her to anyone with 'geeky' tendencies....or just anyone in general :)

I'll go vote on GR, too.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I'm not really a fan of Underworld, but I can appreciate the appeal.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Roland is very talented...I need to visit him more! Now, I am off to read about you being shrill.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I saw the first Underworld movie but never caught up on the others. I'll have to see about doing that.

I'm a massive Usual Suspects fan though!

    Jai

    ReplyDelete
  81. Tina, that was my favorite show! Bummer it ended.

    Charles, you have good taste.

    Roland, I did appreciate it!

    Faraway, next week!

Allison, you are welcome. And I think it counts.

Al, as long as I made you laugh, that's all that matters. Do try to wipe that thought from your head though.

    MJ, thank you!

John, never thought of it that way.

    Jay, can't forget that!

Joylene, apparently nothing, as they thought I would throw it up.

Michael, you stayed ahead of the game!

    Lee, you are correct.

    Kathe, yes!

Sia, correct. And Pitch Black is a great film.

Jai, that was so close to being my pick...

    Suze, correct!

Thanks to everyone who has voted today!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Underworld is another excellent choice. I'm heading over to say hi to Allison now. :)

    ReplyDelete
  83. I enjoy reading Allison's blog and will hop over to vote for you now :)

    ReplyDelete
  84. Hi Alex - I'm on the right planet to catch you and Roland spinning your way with words .. but as to films, tv shows et al - I am lagger!

Good Reads I need to learn how to do it .. and then I'll give it go .. cheers Hilary

    ReplyDelete
  85. Allison is a fan of Fringe. I am now a fan of Allison.

My favorite of the Underworld films is the third one, Rise of the Lycans, which features the underrated Rhona Mitra.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I might have liked Underworld if the werewolves hadn't been so stupid looking.
And if they hadn't stolen that story.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Kate Beckinsale is just one kickass actress. I love her in Underworld, most of all:) Great choice, Alex!

    ReplyDelete
  90. Underworld and Allison are both new to me.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Following Allison and of course I voted sir!

    ReplyDelete
  92. Totally loved Underworld! I remember wanting to see it out of curiosity, but thinking it would turn out to be a swanky B-movie, but it's one of my favorite vampire films ever made. I was a bit disappointed in the 2nd installment, but the 3rd and 4th redeemed it. I think Selene means moon, which is interesting, given that she's a vampire in the film, rather than a lycan. :D

    ReplyDelete
  93. Will head over to Goodreads in a few minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Selena is the moon. I didn't know Berkeley was in Boston. I thought it was in California. Are there two?

    ReplyDelete
  95. My husband is a big Underworld fan. It must be Kate and the vampires.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I'd like to look that good in black leather.

    I'll go vote for you.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Another movie I have to see! I didn't realize there were so many until I started visiting your site.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I've never seen Underworld but the cover and synopsis sounds really awesome.

Now I got go over to Roland's and hear you shrill, lol!

    ReplyDelete
  99. Nope, no surprise on your movie choice.

Also, part of the reason I'm off this month is to get my entry for the Colorado Gold contest ready. I won the fantasy category last time I entered, so I'm working hard to get my pages polished. Hoping for the finals again. :)

    ReplyDelete
  100. wow I caught up(I have been sick the last few days)-I was wondering if you were going to pick this movie-ever met Kate? Actually pretty good movie and not every gal can look good like that in leather

    ReplyDelete
  101. Love Underworld. Of course, I knew I would right from the very first scene. Kate Beckinsale nails it. All of the guys want her and all of the women want to be her.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Thank you, Sir Fran!

    Liesel, you are correct.

Sherry, you're right, and there is only one college.

Melanie, I could post a movie a day for the rest of my life...

    LG, that's awesome!!!

Birgit, I wouldn't know what to do if I met Kate.

    ReplyDelete
  103. The Usual Suspects would have been a good pick, although not Sci-fi. I liked the twist at the end.

IWSG is coming up fast! Right on the heels of all this wonderful writing.

    Play off the Page

    ReplyDelete
  104. Selena sounds like an interesting challenge. Voted.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I <3 Underworld - even the last one of the series ...
The other day you mentioned Serenity too - oh, I miss Firefly ...

    ReplyDelete
  106. I would have picked The Usual Suspects, but then Kate B doesn't really have the same effect on me!!

    ReplyDelete
  107. Just voted!!! :) And I love The usual Suspects. Dont know if I've ever seen Underworld.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I'm just not into vampires and werewolves, so I haven't seen the movie.

But at last, I know the answer to trivia question! Selene was the Greek Goddess of the moon. In Roman mythology she is Luna, from which we get many words.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I've never voted on a goodreads list before - off to do it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  110. How did I know you would pick Underworld for U. Vampires, you're favorite actress...go figure.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Great post for U, as usual Alex...blessings bud!

    ReplyDelete
  112. Underworld is one of my fave movies ever, and I agree about the black leather!

    Congrats to Allison!

    ReplyDelete
  113. I do quite like sexy vampires, but my personal choice would be Damon out of The Vampire Diaries :)

    ReplyDelete
  114. I'm detecting a favorite band with Dream Theater. :) Will have to say hello to Allison.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Love the Underworld series. Scott Speedman is H.O.T!

    ReplyDelete
  116. Yes, nice song, I love that Glass Moon!

    ReplyDelete
  117. My daughter tuned me in to Underworld and I've enjoyed it. Still haven't seen the last one and I'm looking forward to it...

    ReplyDelete
  118. I love the drum intro to that song.
Usual Suspects vs. Kate in leather... Not a choice at all, says I. :)
    Geek Banter's a great one.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I love geeks! Wow, with all your comments, you must be exhausted.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Selene--I want to say it means the moon.

    Voted for you on Goodreads!

    ReplyDelete
  121. I like the sound of Geek Banter. Everyone needs a geek in their life. They rock :)

    ReplyDelete
  122. I'm not a fan of the Underworld movies, but Kate Beckinsale is impressive in them and just about anything. You've got such a crush on her, Alex!

Of course I'm bump you up on Goodreads, and as I'm a serious Twain fan I'm checking out your involvement with him.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Mary, I know - the very next day!

    Donna, probably not...

    Bish, very good!

    Mary, you may be right...

    David, there was no contest...

    Clarissa, you have no idea...

    Thank you everyone who voted!

    ReplyDelete
  124. I don't think I've met Allison yet.
I'll swing by her place tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Dude, you got me right confused. Had to double check. You see, when I think of "Underworld", I think of one of my favourite dance techo bands. Or "Underworld" on the British soap, "Coronation Street". The Underworld on Coronation Street is a place that makes knickers or I'd better say for your North American audience, panties.

I shall check out the awesome Allison. Abducted by Samuel Clemens' ghost?

Quick perusal through your links and then I must go....

    ReplyDelete
  126. Poor Kate forced to wear those leather/vinyl catsuits. Doesn't leave much room for a donut. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  127. I'm pretty sure Selene means Moon in Greek mythology,

    ReplyDelete
  128. Another new movie to watch and blogger to read. All I need now is more time.

    ReplyDelete

Brinda, fortunately she fits in them well.

    Kittie, thanks!

  131. That Colorado Gold contest for unpublished writers Julie mentioned is a wonderful opportunity. Those winners and some of the finalists often go on to get published.

    ReplyDelete
  132. I knew you were going to go with Underworld today! Haha :)

    ReplyDelete
  133. I'm just surprised it took you this long to talk about her!

  144. Ahhh Underworld! The original vampire wereworlf type love affair! Fan of this whole series--def. a set of movies I've watched a few times! Nice pick!

  145. I know I'm late. But better comment late than never.

My wife likes vampires a lot and I don't like them. Nevertheless Underworld is not a bad movie.

CassaStorm is the number three on my Goodreads list for “Can’t Wait Sci-Fi/Fantasy of 2013."

  146. Selene was so badass. Coolest vampire ever. Terrible 4th movie, though. Ugh. I want to erase it from my mind.

Allison seems like a cool lady!

Selene was the goddess of the moon, if I remember. I used to be deep into Greek mythology.

  147. It was OK. I would have gone with The Usual Suspects. :)
